Some people transmigrate into emperors; others into princes.

They live in luxury, holding boundless power in their hands.

Some people transmigrate into shizuns, or sect leaders.

They were revered by all, their powers supernatural.

Some unlucky souls become villains, but even with their terrible reputations, they would still have enough power to summon rain from the sky, and maybe even crush the protagonist beneath their feet.

Li Changtian, a stand-up young man of the new era, upright and incorruptible, sacrificed his life on the battlefield protecting others. His eyes closed for the last time, then he blinked them open again…

He! Transmigrated!

Into a person everyone wanted dead, a criminal who had committed an unforgivable crime!

Li Changtian: “??? Wait, wait, did something go wrong somewhere?”

The Inspector Envoy of the Imperial Court of Judicial Review, Yan Shu, who hated injustice more than anything in the world, simply stepped on Li Changtian’s head and said in an ice-cold voice: “A life must be repaid with a life.”

Li Changtian: “&%%%¥&¥#@”

I have to say that Of all the Transmigrations, why am I a Prisoner? By 1111 has to be easily one of my favourite novels and I would also highly recommend it to everyone who liked HSAV.

1. Summary:

The story starts out fairly straightforwardly - Li Changtian, our MC, is a soldier who dies during a mission and wakes up as a beggar in an alleyway in ancient China and next to him lies a dead girl's body. He tries to resuscitate her but during the act he's seen and... more>> immediately labeled as the perpetrator and is thrown into jail. Enter Yan Shu, our ML, who is an imperial magistrate currently passing through the town on his way to solve another case.

Yan Shu offers to take care of the case and since all evidence seems to point to Li Changtian, Yan Shu decides to make him confess through torture. However Li Changtian asks YS to just kill him instead (due to PTSD from his previous life, as well as all the sh*t he went through ever since he transmigrated). Yan Shu starts investigating again and finds evidence pointing to a different culprit.

Yan Shu realizes he had almost sent an innocent person to his death. This shakes him up deeply due to a traumatic event in his childhood and he then actively works with LCT to find the real culprit. During their investigation YS and LCT eventually become friends, but they also run into something interesting.

Li Changtian doesn't know his identity, more specifically he doesn't know the identity of the body he transmigrated into. He originally thought that his body was simply some unimportant wandering beggar however there seem to be clues pointing to him being related directly to the case Yan Shu was going to investigate. After closing the case of the dead girl LCT follows Yan shu to find out more about who he is/was in this life.

Turns out the answers to that are real damn complicated.

2. Main characters and relationships:

Li Changtian - our MC, former soldier and resident himbo with a lot of emotional and mental baggage, selfless to fault

Yan Shu - our ML, imperial magistrate and resident best boy also with a lot of emotional baggage, don't let his first appearance fool you, he's very tough on the outside/soft on the inside type of person

MC and ML are both very capable and smart and they treat each other very much like equals.

The relationship between the MC and ML is one of the central and best parts of the novel. After their initial messed up start where YS treats LCT as a mu*derer their relationship quickly transforms. The two characters have a lot in common which helps them to form an understanding and a very deep and loyal friendship which then later transforms into romantic feelings. Yan Shu in particular really sees his past self in LCT's struggles and does his best to help him and take care of him.

Their relationship is by no means a smooth sailing because due to their pasts, in fact it often puts them on opposing sides (kinda like Xiao Yu'an and Yan Heqing from HSAV). However, something I really liked about this novel is that YS and LCT usually talk out their issues when they arise, thus preventing a lot of unnecessary misunderstandings and miscommunications.

Also notable mention to the novel’s side CP. I absolutely loved them even with the little time they had and they made me feel for them as much as the main CP themselves.

3. My opinion:

As I said in the beginning, this novel is one of my favourites. The story is really well paced, the mu*der mysteries and intrigues are interenting and engaging and all the characters and relationships are compeling and well fleshed out. I have to say big props to 1111 for the characters in this novel because they are all just so good.

MC, ML, villains, side characters - everyone is very 3 dimensional. Every character has their own motivations and personality and their actions are perfectly in line with that. It’s easy to sympathize even with the “bad guys” because everyone’s actions make sense with their character and their roles in the overarching plot

I also really enjoy the writing style - there are no unnecessary details. Every little detail will eventually return to help put together the full picture. Be it as a foreshadowing, major plot point or simply a narrative parallel, every detail has a place in the story. <<less

With respect to the translation, I am currently MTL the sh*t out of it because I am an impatient as*hole but the translation by Airplane Shooting bla bla is really really nice. If you want to read it I would encourage reading their translations since it's clear they put a lot of effort into it :)

Chapter 4 review:

Sooo even though it's extremely early and I haven't seen how the author tries to make it make sense, imma come here and say it: unless the ML is changed I... more>> cannot possibly acknowledge their relationship being anything more than civil. Like??? Is MC supposed to be immune to trauma??? Sorry but no matter how brief or full of misunderstandings the torture was still torture and it is traumatic. I can see MC forgiveness ML for torturing him since he did it out of a "sense of justice" and I use that term very loosely, because ML so far just came across as an entitled elite who thinks he knows everything/better purely because he's more educated even though he barely did any investigation whatsoever he did not even question nobody like tf? So they just tell you something and you go with it and torture people because of it? Uhu

Anyways my point was I cannot possibly see a realistic future where the MC truly manages to get past the torture bit and actually have a healthy relationship with ML. I can see him forgiving him but not just being able to magically forget the ab*se he suffered and the consequential trauma, that's just unreasonable and unrealistic. Point is, torture is not something you just manage to get over, literally it's a golden ticket to PTSD if anything which should also challenge the authors' capabilities of expressing mental illnesses and trauma in general. Also, the only way I see MC and ML actually getting into a relationship and it not being completely unreasonable is if there's some Stockholms' syndrome there.

Edit: MC really is immune to trauma, even though he was in the military and it is a known fact soldiers have hella PTSD, MC is built different. Nothing fazes him. :)) I mean if that's your cup of tea, I guess alright you do you. But remember this fictional piece of writing is very off target and very fantastical, that's not how actual humans act like.

I can however see ML falling in love with his torture victim AKA MC because he comes across as just that type of dude.

I am still going to read since I am extremely interested in knowing how the author is going to go about that. <<less

This is a wonderful novel with some fluff, humour but huge amount of angst. It's a story about the conflict between loyalty and family, love and trust between two main characters that keeps getting questioned for the sake of greater good.

Plot is a very important part of the novel so don't go in expecting fluffy romance although there are many soft and tender moments.

Our MC

Spoiler

Li Changtian was a soldier in his past life and died during a mission - ever since his parents died he was moving from house to house without his own home and it's shown in his lack of security.

He's very strong, able to survive torture without a sound despite the fact he's afraid of pain and a very good fighter hand to hand. He's used to covering pain with laugh and cheerful disposition.

I personally think he's a really fascinating character with great sense of responsibility which does end up hurting him again and again.

our ML

Spoiler

Yan Shu has a very strong sense of justice and can be both ruthless and very reasonable which is a great characteristic. But under that calm exterior he's really lonely, having lost his father at the young age, and longs for company. He silently appreciates Li Changtian's company and was the first to fell for him. He does get hurt because of barriers between them, , ,

Let me just say, he deserves all candy in the world. And all the Li Changtian.

The plot

Spoiler

Plot revolves around Han Ya, an organisation working to overthrow the throne, and war with surrounding country.

Spoiler: Li Changtian is a relative of someone from Han Ya, but original body is innocent.

Later on Li Changtian goes on the frontier to fight thanks to his great strategy knowledge from last life and to atone for killing someone from royal family.

Li Changtian is the kind to sacrifice all for success and to end the war so things get heavy later on.

This novel has consumed my life for the past year and a half (since I'm keeping up with the actual translation and not doing mtl). It has quickly become my favourite of all danmei I have read so far.

What you will find: hurt/comfort, angst, fluff, comedy

What you won't find: abusive/toxic relationship between ML and MC, noncon, heavy angst ala yuwu

... more>> If you're curious about the novel but scared by some of the reviews here, I can offer a spoilery information that may help

you decide if this novel is what you are looking for:

Spoiler

The main character, Li Changtian, transmigrates into ancient times, into a person who's at a crime scene next to a recently dead girl. He tries to perform CPR on her but is immediately seen and caught (and assumed to have r*ped the girl). Yan Shu is an official in charge of the Justice Bureau passing through this small town, who hears of a mu*derer caught red-handed, scheduled for execution. He offers to take care of the case. Before performing the execution he tries to get a confession out of Li Changtian via a torture pill (as was common in the past). Li Changtian offers no explanation other than saying it wasn't him and 'this body isn't mine'. Fortunately, just before executing him, Yan Shu finds evidence of his innocence, feels guilty, apologizes to Li Changtian and takes care of his injuries, then they try to solve the mu*der mystery together.

[collapse]

I literally read the whole story by mtl but surprisingly I finished the whole thing in 2 days. It was so good.

MC and ML definitely have attachment issues because of their past experiences. I also liked the villain of this story too, he's so manipulative and I like his strategies.

Spoiler

idk if I missed it because I was mtling but how did MC survived after getting stabbed by the villain?

It isn't bad... But it isn't good either.

If you are new to those kind of novels, maybe you gonna like it. But for me, after reading countless novels, there wasn't anything that maid me want to keep reading this certain story.

It clearly is supposed to be full of "dog blood" (drama), but it's hard to digest the way it is presented.

... more>> I don't know if I'm supposed to find it tragically funny, or just pitiful.

And, although I love a tr*sh male lead (ML), or a ML with some toxic traits, I want him to show a side that I can actually like (empathize and/or admire), I want to see some potential of a relationship/love between the MC (main character) and the ML that is so strong that it is comprehensible that the MC puts aside the [past] bad actions of the ML.

In another words, I want a three dimensional interesting ML, not just a handsome villain. But is not just the ML, the MC and the other characters all felt pretty plain to me.

The story sometimes gives us a very nice reading experience, making we imagine the scene in a smooth manner.

Spoiler

MC dying watching the sunset, and the detailed observations of the ML when observing the dead girl's body.

[collapse]

But those moments are few in between.

Accidentally I marked the novel as a 2.0, but I would give it a solid 3.5 - when compared to other chinese BL [or] transmigration novels.

I'm not fluent in english, but I hope I made a clear review ♡

I do recommend the novel if (1) you are starting out, if (2) you want more [BL (boy's love) ] chinese novels to read but you already read almost all of them, or if (3) you read stories without being too critical~

Ps.: Never forget to read the tags! Hehe <<less

This has not become my fav novel but I think it deserves a good rating. I started with manhua and then continued with mtl (which was pretty much understandable, only pronouns were messed up, but still easy to understand based on the context).

The relationship btw main characters is very healthy and they truly care for each other, what a balm for my sore eyes, tired from all the cringy ml's in danmei novels. I liked both characters a lot, and the plot is quite heavy with events too, so do... more>> not be mislead by the low rating and give it a try. It may be not smth extraordinary but it was an entertaining read, I do not regret reading it. <<less
