Short summary: Local woman living her best life getting rich, raising her son and networking in ancient times is forced to flee south with her family. Accidentally gets named the mountain king of 45 impoverished villages but her business acumen develops it into the safest and richest city of the region.

The original summary is kind of misleading. I pictured a weak FL who was coerced into a marriage, helplessly fleeing from wars and waiting for her husband to save her until he broke her heart which motivated her to be... more>> independent and forget him.

But, that wasn't what happened at all.

The novel follows the story of a modern career woman who finds herself thrust into the life of a poor young girl from a farmer family amidst impending war and societal upheaval. Forced into a marriage of convenience with a merchant's son known for his reckless behavior, she sees it as an opportunity for freedom, a child of her own and financial stability while he is away at war. Despite her initial disinterest in love, she agrees to the marriage and uses her newfound resources to start a business and support her family. However, as political chaos escalates, she is forced to flee with her family to the south, where she must navigate survival and rebuild her life anew. Through resilience and determination, she seeks a chance to secure safety and happiness for her loved ones in the midst of turmoil.

What's the takeaway? The husband was the least of concerns! She was living quite happily on her own. Her priorities were basically: 1 Her son, 2 Her family, 3 Safety, 4 Getting rich, 5 Good food, 6 So the baby's father is still alive? Huh. Guess I'm not a widow yet

So actually, this is not a romance novel at all. Romance is just a subplot.

Let's dissect our FL's outlook. Firstly, she's all about self-awareness. Knowing your own strengths is key, right? Then there's her take on business: she sees opportunities everywhere, whether it's during peacetime or in the midst of war. But if something's not clicking? She's a firm believer in cutting ties and moving on. No need to force it.

Now, onto the topic of romance. According to her, men aren't the most dependable bunch. Instead of relying on a husband, she's all for living life independently. Raise a kid, run a business—now that's her idea of happiness.

I really liked the FL. She really confident and thought like a modern person without being brainless about it. She was very strategic about maneuvering to ensure she could get what she wanted and live freely without breaking the rules or standing out too much. Her path to success wasn't perfectly smooth either. Heroine halo didn't protect our FL from struggling with some competitors, robberies, hostage situations, economic crises, taxes, etc. Yet she was a smart businesswoman, early warnings from her businesses partners were her best advantage to survive.

Another plus is the lack of irresistible charm halos. No men falling in love with her at first sight nor influential young masters coveting her. She was successful for her business sense and high EQ (she made the right friends). It wasn't because she was special or the most beautiful.
Spoiler

the is one suitor, her childhood sweetheart, although she didn't really ever consider him as she doesn't care about romance. No love triangle here

The baby is cute and has a personality. FL is a great mother too.
Spoiler

FL wanted a child, she planned it and she got one. She made sure he was her priority and knew that in an "everyone for themselves" chaotic warring era, she was the only one who could be trusted to take care of her son. She kept him really close. She took care of him, protected him, educated him, considered him in everything and disciplined him when needed. Plently mother-child fluff

Additionally, there's a twist to many common tropes. The setting felt historically accurate too
Spoiler

1. She's modern but she's not obvious about it, more in her confidence and mindset. No preaching or superiority complex here. 2. She adopted a child with a very special identity but he actually never made a glorious comeback to raise her status or face-slap her enemies, he was just happier living as her son than fighting for his "birthright". 3. Villains weren't really important or long-lasting enough to be a problem, no real antagonist here. Some annoying people and small foes but FL never bothered wasting time with them, too busy developing villages, raising children and making money. 4. At the end, she's technically the princess of a small territory but it's just a convenience thing and she just keeps living her life as usual. 5. No saving the country or building an empire that will last ages. From historic knowledge, she recognized it was most likely a chaotic era that involved constant warring and change of dynasties during 50 years, so she only ensured to develop a smaller independent territory and try to keep it stable without really getting into the fight for the throne

What Didn't Quite Hit the Mark:

-FL had a system that was mentioned like 5 times in all the +400 chapters. The FL called it a mostly useless golden finger as the only ones that could benefit from it were herself and her son. I wonder why the author even included it.

-The damsel in distress trope. I guess FL was too successful and didn't really need a man anymore, since she was solving everything on her own. But to keep the romance alive, the author had to stuff in some moments where the hubby could play the hero so they'd get closer to ensure a typical HE. A bit predictable, if you ask me.

-While the main character shines bright like a diamond, some of the other characters get left in the dust. It's very FL-centric, with loose ends for everyone else. <<less

It’s a great novel to read very slice of life but also quite eventful. The story focus on FL trying to better her life and people around her. The romance is sparse and coarse but sweet when FL and ML meets. Villains don’t have big roles here. Loved the resourcefulness and independence of the FL.
