He was obsessed with MC's mother who fled from him and built up a new life with someone else pretending to have died. His first son was with MC's mother. They are not blood-related. The both have different father and mother. ML's maternal grandfather took him away from there and raised him from about the age of 6 or 8?.

-MC's father came from the MO family who was a famous medical family. They created medicine men by giving pregnant women special medicine. The people from the MO family couldn't live past the age of 25 naturally. They had to take the heart of a medicine man to let the children live longer. MC and her sister destoryed the MO family.

-Turns out MC and ML were an emperor and his general 600 years ago. MC was killed as a medicine man by the MO family.

-MC's and ML's son was an evil spirit.

• ML and MC wasn't entangled not only in this life but also in their previous 2 lifes but both 2 lifes ended with tragedy. 600 years ago, ML was an emperor while MC was a general. MC refused to be an empress because she wanted to guard ML's kingdom but ML kept waiting for her. Sadly, MC ended up being killed because she was a medicine man. ML was devastated and chose to live a single life for the rest of his life. In the 2nd life, MC ended up being killed by Mu Mian and Mu Qiu before ML had a chance to confess to MC. ML was also devastated after MC's death. Fortunately, they ended up together quite early in this life and had a happy ending.
• Mu Qiu is a bad person and Cheng Yanmo knew it but it's still quite sad when they really didn't end up together. No matter what, they're a married couple in the last life and they even had children together so it would be hard to let go, moreover Cheng Yanmo had his memories from his last life. Fortunately, Cheng Yanmo could move on and found his own happiness.
• Jiang Zhen and Jiang Bi's story was also quite tragic. They're kidnapped when they're kid but Jiang Zhen never gave up trying to go home. He successed and after that, he worked hard to provide a better life for his sister so they could reunite again one day. But before Jiang Zhen could reunite with his sister, she was killed by Jiang Guchuan's scheme. She was ra*ed by Jiang Guchuan's friends before being thrown to rail track. Jiang Zhen vowed to take revenge for her while impersonating Jiang Bi.
• Li li and Su Beibei weren't a perfect couple and because of their past, their relationship became a bit more complicated but they loved each other and tried hard to let go of the past. It didn't last long though. Their marriage fell apart and Li li ended up having a mental illness while their kid, Li Ao, became the biggest victim. He was kidnapped by Li li's competitor and ended up with phycological trauma until he was 17 yo. Although I'm quite sad by their separation, I still think that it was for the best and hope that Su Beibei could find another happiness. But then 10 years later somehow she forgave Li li and ended up being together with him again. I'm not happy at all with Su Beibei's decision because Li li's mistakes were too fatal for me and considered unforgivable.

The once handsome ML and the most beautiful MC were now an old couple. ML still worked hard in company till old because Han Jun was back to the immortal world (it wasn't clear who ended up being ML's successor after Han Jun's departure). They reunited again of course but they soon would part with each other again due to ML and MC's old age. Kinda sad imagining MC and ML's passing one day.

even the themes of school life, gender bender, mafia-ish setup, chinese medicine sect, ancient china, ghosts, and cultivators are in this novel.

I think the main part I had mixed feelings about was the story of Han Zhan’s father Edward. The twist about his romantic relationships and children were complicated enough to be interesting. The author just took it a little too far with his ‘career’ in Italy. Expect most of the exaggerations about foreigners. You can tell the author isn’t malicious in her betrayal, but the almost movie style portrayal of Edward’s background from someone who has obviously never met foreigners is hard to find immersive. The author does seem to manage the fine line between patriotism and racism at least. At most, her characters prioritize China’s well-being before that of other countries. I did skip parts of Edwards plot, but what I did read never crossed the line into offensive territory.

There are actually a lot of over the top villains including mu*derers, rapists, and I think even what could be defined as cannibals (consuming flesh and blood of ‘medicine men’). The story also has extra past lives from different genres for various characters. Some elements of the story are supernatural. There is even a sci-fi reveal that the wider universe contains interstellar organizations that rank civilizations based on certain criteria, even though Earth is still 2 ranks from being eligible making it a largely irrelevant detail. I still feel confused as to why the main couple needed another past life from 600 years past.

Okay maybe this story did have a lot of flaws, but the story itself remained interesting. Refreshingly, not every love rival was a villain. Not every side couple has a smooth happy ending. The author really likes to explore family conflict and it shows. There is everything for side characters to experience from being orphaned, having relatives aiming for their lives, an evil mother in law who tries to induce her daughter in law to lose her baby, a father who sold his children to human traffickers and pushed his wife to su*cide, and many more. The author also seems to hate rapists. She or He deals out varying levels of punishment for each after setting them up for failure. She (?) even depicts a marital r*pe scenario for some side characters, directly sentencing the culprit to undergo serious treatments for mental illness and 20 years of repentance before he can win his wife back. This seems to be the only one who got off ‘lightly’ without being sent to jail or directly getting mu*dered.
