Lan Ke Qi Yuan

Scattered leaves fall on the Go game board beside the rotten axe (烂柯), but there is no one playing this Go of Fate (棋缘) amongst the old trees. Prosperity leads to primordial unity, and then reflects on the vast mountains and seas. An hour in the game is a year of the life.

When he woke up, Ji Yuan became a half-blind beggar in a dilapidated mountain temple. When one lacks strength, one must rely on bluffing. A real person has a sword, while a charlatan has only their speech. This is the fundamental difference that determines survival and status in this terrifying world. When life is real, a year in the dream may be just a blinking moment of it.

[Translator’s summary: a slice of life story in which a cultivator wanders the world, exploring all it has to offer and gaining a reputation as a powerful, wise teacher.]

Demonic Reader lv 451F
New Demonic Read

If not for some plot holes, some OPnesses and some blank philosophies, this novel can reach 5/5 instead of 4/5. It's unique in plot, world building, cultivation technique, fighting scene and villains.

Also, too much villians and characters and subplots may confuse readers who read all-chapters-in-one session. The author openned mouth, inserted gun and shot himself in the final arc. So sad..

MC is transmigrated to xianxia world which every characters are nothing but Go chess piece. For readers who do NOT have background in Go game, this main plot will confuse... more>> them more.

In Go game, all pieces are the same and equally important/unimportant. Some may be raised to near-king level before thrown away. Some garbage pieces which were thrown away since the game beginning may become the key game determination in the final stage. That's Go game, the not ordinary board game.

The worst of this novel is that the Game players. They are not the game's piece. They have every authority over the pieces. But in the later part of the novel, they act as if they were discarded piece. They are nothing! NO role at all. A single OPness is enough to throw them into thrash can!

The author also forgot the most important plot of this novel too ! There is no "烂柯 (Lan Ke) ". Only a brief slice of MC's life which spanned less than a hundred years. He forgot tge Tian Yuan piece too.

That's why 3 star. <<less

After reading the comic, I had to go and MTL this series. So glad to finally see this here!

The story follows Ji Yuan as he navigates his new life after coming to a new world and embarks on a journey to cultivate immortality. What I especially liked about the story was its emphasis on fateful encounters and how one choice can alter the lives of many others. It was fun to see, as the story progressed, how the fates of people Ji Yuan encountered changed over time. The side characters... more>> were all unique and memorable.

Ji Yuan is a protagonist you can really root for; he has a solid moral compass, upholding justice and condemning evil. He's willing to offer a hand to those in need and give advice to those who are willing to listen, but in the end lets others make their own choices, good or bad.

If I remember, the ending conflict felt a bit sudden; there were parts of it that had been brewing throughout the story, while other parts only appeared shortly before they were dealt with. But overall, I felt that things were resolved and tied together rather neatly. I definitely recommend giving it a try.

Edit: I want to commend the translator. They've done a great job and put in a lot of effort, especially with the footnotes in every chapter for added clarity. <<less

I have never left a review on NU before. Not after hundreds novels. Not for Lord of the Mysteries. Not for anything. For this I will break my years of lurking.

As of chapter 72, this is the best cultivation story I have ever read. The only problems with it is that it makes almost all the other content in my reading list seem trite and dull by comparison.

There writing is fresh and thoughtful. The translation is outstanding. I will be eagerly awaiting the rest of the story.

A xanxia novel with a good story with a good translation and fun characters? Man, what a surprise! Only 25 chapters in of course, but the story feels very charming and fun. The protagonist being partially blind is interesting, and seeing him con his way out of dire situations is funny. I look forward to more, and I think more people should pick this up as more chapters get translated.

I'll give it 5 stars, this is one of the novel that makes you feel somewhat reading a true magical story, or a retelling of a myth, the story circle around fates and coincidence but its connected, theres no pointless journey, even when the MC just visiting his friend in the end its connected to the main story, the MC doesn't really focusing on making himself powerful but at the same time throughout his journey and enjoying the world he become more powerful and eventually realizes the purpose of his... more>> existence, the power leveling isnot complicated and will not makes you confused. <<less

So I stumbled upon this novel in 2019, completed the story for the first time in 2022, and manage to reread it for 5 times from start to finish. I can definitely say that it's a masterpiece. This will get you hook, and make you relate and support the MC the entire time. The definition of a true immortal, among the countless immortals in another xianxia novels that focus on dao and cultivation. I even read the korean translation /version of the novel which was just finished last year. Whenever... more>> I read other xianxia novels, I always find myself coming back to this novel, comparing Ji Yuan to the other MC of the novel that I'm reading, and sometimes ending up rereading a portion/chapter of this novel.

Unlike the typical male-oriented mainstream immortal novels, this one has a protagonist who is not interested in elixirs, methods, or treasures, or power but rather shows the appearance of a real immortal who has transcended the world, driven by the protagonist's motivation to achieve/fully realize the dao with the emphasis of fate and good morals, also to save the world, which has the nature of an adventure story.

The story was well made, the way the author combined the power concept, cultivation, and the classical chinese mythology makes the plot a top tier. The protagonist's morals and the way the story focused on fate, coincidence and decisions bring an excitement, simple but impeccable plot and smooth imagery. I wish the author would continue to make a continuation of the series, even if it's just a side story. I didn't expect that I will see this series being translated here. I hope the translators will continue their good work in bringing justice to the translation of this series.

PS; Excuse the 3 star review, it should be 5 stars, just made a mistake correction made <<less

It's a relaxing read with bits of excitement and plot as a side dish.

Smooth workflow, great imagery, and a leisurely meander through a fantastical classical world of Chinese mythological creatures.

Translations are excellently executed.

Overall, a very good read to get a taste of Chinese Mythology mixed with Cultivation.

What a beautiful novel!

It's rare to find such a peaceful but interesting novel.

The story follows Ji Yuan, a transmigrated moden man, as he navigates through a world with demons and humans.

As cliche as it sounds, hear me out:-

Spoiler

There are a few things that makes this novel truly wonderful-

First and foremost, we have the main character, Ji Yuan, himself. Unlike many other main characters found in cultivation novels, he is truly a peaceful and virtuous gentleman. Even faced with many dilemmas where violence would seem like the better option, he remains true to his values. Better yet, he does it without being frustrating. While gentle, he's not indecisive, making him someone you can truly come to respect.

Second, we have the relationships between Ji Yuan and others. Over the course of the novel, Ji Yuan forms deep relationships with mortals, ghosts, demons, and immortals alike There's something cathartic about seeing such fulfilling relationships between characters. Every relationship was beautiful and strong in its own different way.

Third are the side characters. All of them play some role in the novel whether big or small, and very rarely are they just plot devices to be used and discarded.

Fourth, and this may be controversial, is the ending. While the ending might be accused of being a joy kill with plot holes, I thought it was a very suitable ending for Ji Yuan. As the author themselves said, "The world will go on, but the story of Ji Yuan's chess game is over."

[collapse]

Overall, this was a great read. You should definitely read this. <<less

This story can be summarized and defined in a single statement: it is art. The translation is impeccable; the translator put effort and love into every chapter. The novel itself is wonderful; it's a xianxia with a more philosophical and poetic touch, yet at the same time, it's fun, funny, and light. The characters are all very different from each other, lively and interesting, but the true crown jewel is the protagonist, who starts off ignorant about everything involving the world and cultivation but gradually becomes the wise person everyone... more>> thinks he is. Overall, there aren't enough compliments to define the quality of this story and the quality of this translation. Read it! <<less
