First Embrace: The Bloodling’s traditional art. To use a particular technique to turn humans into vampires, and to take the identity of a Sire to be responsible to the newly-turned.

In modern society, this kind of ancient art has been lost. As the last descendant, Xia Yuzhou was forced to become a Dad to all kinds of people.

Middle-aged rich person: “Who are you?”

Genius young man: “Are you immortal?”

Beautiful young girl: “You turned me into a vampire. Are you planning on taking me to your castle full of blood-red roses, and to imprison me there for eternity?”

Xia Yuzhou: “I’ll answer everyone once, I am your “Daddy”. I’m not immortal, I don’t have a castle, just a dental clinic, and every month I will give you all a thousand Yuan in pocket money.”

To start off, as the synopsis implied, this is an alternate modern-fantasy, rom-com, with the mix of eastern (Jianshi) and western vampire setting. There is drama (due to the short-lived misunderstanding) and action (that will surprise you). How supernatural beings evolved with the passage of time, and how they live their lives as modern, law-abiding citizens hiding in plain sight of humans.

It sets off with our MC, Xia Yuzhou, who has just returned to China from studying abroad, and was asked for a favor to "save" someone. Or so it... more>> implied.

How to save a terminally ill kid? He killed him!

Spoiler

Lol. He turned him into a vampire. Basically, killing his human self to become a kin, a bloodling, and now, he got a fresh out of the hospital, grown-up son.

And that was the start where his life converges with so many important characters. The novel feels more like "re-kindling" those faded, hidden feelings and forgotten memories that are buried within the subconscious yet still so precious, and that with a single flint can blaze to life. Not just in the aspect of romance, but the meeting and re-connecting with "supposedly" old acquaintances. The MC's past will be unveiled as the story unfolds, stirring his relationship with the male lead, and unknotting their misunderstandings. As the reader, I sometimes felt quite cheated, where is that solemn atmosphere? It got wrecked by the comedy spectacularly.

There is a somewhat sentimental tone within the text, which often got overshadowed by the comedy. It's a sizzling sensation that was prevalent since the start of the novel. From their sudden reunion, the brief reminiscences, and to their misunderstandings. The tone of the novel shifts a lot. It was subtle but when it appeared, it's very evocative. The author always likes to do a 'mood breaker.' It's like an old movie romance suddenly going bad and becoming a gag show. It made me, the reader, bitter one moment to roaring laughter the next.

Despite the comedy, the short-lived drama and action, this new flavor of vamp setting, and amazing interactions of the characters, the author's way of words will glimmer within the little details. The overtone within the dialogues, the action of the characters that seemingly looks so simply but tells a lot to the readers. There are many memorable characters in this novel that supports and even sustains the story but I fell in love with Xia Yuzhou, he shines in so many facets. His character just felt very tangent, and very much seems like a realistic person. His thought process is really the highlight of this novel.

Most of all, I like Xia Yuzhou's way of speaking. Not his dirty, obscene mouth but the way his words mean so much than what they intended. Just like his words of making his family seem 'like a lot' when in reality, only him and his brother remains. Scratch that, he's the only true heir that remained, begs a lot to be said. There is so much nuance that re-reading brings a lot of new hints and realizations. His joker and speechless inducing mouth power, although, may seem like an inherent born ability but there lies a deeper reason why he's like that.

Si Jun, on the other, is an acquired taste. He is quiet, solemn to cold, and has a low-key tsundere tells. In their relationship, it's definitely MC who is always trying hard to bridge that gap to this awkward to stubborn man. The author had given a not so perfect male lead to this novel. But their chemistry is off the charts. I smile foolishly at their sweet and funny moments. Not to mention, he is also quite pitiful, Yuzhou's ULTI (way with words: a joker, cusser, and le*d-mouthed) majority hit this boi. The amount he was left speechless was so many, that even this man, who was born noble, grew up in a strict standards can set off/near to explode in anger, just proved how powerful MC's mouth is. It depends on the readers how you will see him down the line, but give this story a chance by following Yuzhou's tale.

If you simply want to laugh, then read it! <<less

I gave 4 stars because I didn't like the character Shi Jun. Why? He is casual, indecisive, never speaks when there is a problem and is never honest. From this novel it reads very clearly that it is Xia Yuzhou who always makes sacrifices and takes the initiative. Yes even though SJ secretly supports XY but he never talks and can only hide. The people around SJ are also annoying as if only SJ is the saddest. I don't like the writer because he sided with SJ more.

I just have to say that this author really has a knack for comedy, because some of the situations are A+ funny.

Join along as MC, one of the last vampires, meets his estranged ex and discovers that actually... he wasn't so alone at all. Cue hilarity as he discovers the world of modern vampirism.

Spoiler

As true modern individuals, vampires are free to engage in any sort of career they wish including pro-gamer, celebrity, businesspeople, doctors, and dentists.

And as modern people, they naturally use modern methods including using fully functional up to date app to mark out their territories, pick up missions, chat with each other, and request appointments with clan leaders.

MC's "first embrace" became a modern medical procedure in which the patient was sterilized, prepped, and marked with a surgical marker. This was witnessed by no fewer than two doctors, and ML was even on the ready with gauze and a suture kit!

[collapse]

MC is sort of the silly happy-go-lucky type who can be serious when he needs, while ML is extremely reserved. There isn't too much characterization of ML on account of his stoic personality, and because this novel felt pretty short.

I detracted a star because, although the world building was unique, the plot got a little wonky after a while, and there were a lot of loose ends after a rushed ending.

Spoiler

This author really likes to pull out past memories of previous lives/reincarnated in a modern world type trope.

It’s a really cute and short novel. The plot was fun and although some parts could’ve been depressing, the author mostly added in something funny to lift the mood. This is also seen with the characters.

Spoiler

First son was feeling pretty sad with his family situation and was kinda questioning his life, but the MC ended up making him laugh.

Daughter was wondering if vampires were like what the novel she was reading described them as, but the dark atmosphere ends up being ruined with the entry of the mad doctor.

Second son was upset with how his family treated him when MC entered saying he wants to be his dad. He was about to fall the security on the MC.

MC finds out the truth behind the misunderstanding about the chocolate box. He gets ready to go figure it out with ML, but ML’s wisdom teeth are hurting and the mood lightens.

[collapse]

So overall, I think the author was trying to go for a story which was interesting and fun, without being too heavy.

I noticed that people didn’t like the ML, and I was honestly not satisfied with him at first, but after seeing his experiences I fell in love with him. It’s human to not be perfect, which is what people expect the ML to be. He was basically abandoned by his mom, thought to be stillborn by his father, his sister had no idea about his existence, and his uncle was the clan leader and couldn’t show partiality to him. I don’t think it’s wrong for him to want a partner that loves him and will protect him and always take his side.

Spoiler

MC bought milk tea for his team and tea for ML. Girl who liked MC wanted the tea, so ML was sad and tried to walk away quietly. MC gets the tea back from the girl and gives it to ML. ML tells MC later on that it was why he fell for the MC.

ML saw his father buying legos for his sister. ML asks his father if he’ll buy a toy for him too. Uncle scolds ML before the father can respond and takes him away saying that they haven’t fallen to the point of begging strangers to buy them stuff. Uncle tells MC he regretted it later on because ML stopped asking for stuff and isolated himself. He played legos by himself at home even when he was an adult.

[collapse]

ML is the quiet kid who does his best and hopes to get love, but his uncle is the clan leader and can’t show bias. He is scared that his feelings won’t be reciprocated. Although he may not show his love as openly as other MLs, he condones all the MC’s actions even when they go against what he was taught, like when MC but his ear for fun although that was representative of wanting to marry someone in ML’s culture. Behind the facade of a cold and unfeeling ML from the beginning of the story, his childish side of getting MC to make chocolates for him in order to resolve the misunderstanding instead of saying it directly, building a lego cat because he think MC is like a cat, and feeling jealous when MC almost left him to check on his sister. He wanted to be special to he MC, and he was willing to die if he could be that person.

I know that some might not be able to empathize with his character, but I really loved it so much because it was what made the story so meaningful. It’s more about how the two leads learn how to love each other, rather than the plot. <<less

I found the story interesting - the author put a Chinese spin on a vampire tale, which I found very fresh. It was interesting enough (and funny enough) that I completed the book even though I didn't really like the couple in this book - I found both the MC and ML to be quite immature and annoying at some parts, especially in their misunderstandings, which is quite rare for an LYQH book. It's a good light read with very little angst and lots of humour though, so I still... more>> recommend it! <<less

First of all, the MC are both funny and embarrassing that I need to stop in between of the pages to silently bury my face against the pillow or squirm all over the bed, giggling foolishly at his antics.

ML made me frustrated MOST of the time especially at the beginning until half of the story. Even though it was not his fault since he developed his personality from growing up in peculiar environments since childhood, I cannot but blame almost all the angst on him.

4 stars because of the plot,... more>> especially the climax. Maybe because I was MTLing it, so I don't really feel the rising tension or excitement of the climax. Furthermore, I'm not convinced of the 'villains' motives but basically the villains are a short-lived characters with very few appearances.

Well, basically this is a recommended light rom-com BL novel for you to read in your leisure time. <<less
