The Immortal Dao is ethereal, and Immortals are hard to find.

Li Nianfan had descended into the cultivation world as a mortal. After learning that he has no hope in cultivation, he only wants to live a peaceful life.

However…

The dog he adopts becomes a demon king of a generation when it sees his poems and paintings. It manages to suppress an entire world.

The tree he plants behind his house becomes a World Tree after listening to his zither music, forming a bridge between heaven and earth.

He meets a passerby who is enlightened by him and becomes an immortal sage who leads an entire generation.

When he looks back—

It turns out that the scholar who had been pestering him for his calligraphy and paintings despite having crappy chess skills, is a chess saint from the Immortal Realm. The beautiful woman who comes to listen to his music every night is the number one saintess of the Immortal Realm…

It's a fresh and new thing, at least it was to me. An ultimate bigshot who is possibly the best in everything, but he doesn' realize it. Those around him however do and in fear of disturbing him, as they assume he must be somehow just pretending or playing to be a mortal man, do everything for him and are super awed but do their best to not show it.

Alas, it is a slice of life novel and a chinese one at that. I don't think I have read any... more>> novel that is more repetitive than this one...

Most of us that read webnovels, especially any that have to do with cultivation and multiple realms, do not mind repetitiveness. I don't.

BUT!

The repetitiveness must not be too much. When the chapter I read feels like it is copied sentence for sentence from a chapter just a few before, and that once more feels the exact same as another chapter a few chapters earlier, and so on (at least ten times or so), I might as well just read the first tenth of the currently translated novel and be finished. I regret it a bit, sticking with this for so long, because unlike repetitiveness in the general plot, this novel goes a step further and is pure repetition beyond arcs and chapters, down to the sentences.

Still, if we were to cut out the extreme repetition, it would merit more or less 2.5/4, so I am giving it three stars because I did enjoy it at the start.

I would not recommend you to read more than perhaps 50 chapters, or at least I recommend skipping/skimming through the scenes you already know. <<less

3-4/5, probably. 57 chapters ain't a lot when talking about your usual 500+ chapter CN novels.

Kind of like a fusion between Gourmet of Another World and I Really Am Not the Lord of Demon. (Both are pretty good series to pass the time as well, but this is honestly not the best it could have been.) Also resembles It Turns Out I am a Dao Ancestor. Heck, even their titles are similar.

It's got the exaggerated reactions and descriptions from GOAW (the glowing, sparkly food that contains xxx amounts of energy,... more>> allowing for instant level-ups, blah blah), and the weirdly dense MC who's somehow blind to the supernatural from IRANTLOD, in the form of an MC who thinks he's normal, but is somehow leaking his overpowered-ness everywhere, and everyone else takes him to be a mysterious bigshot. This makes for a pretty good premise, although those exaggerations do get old pretty quick.

Suspiciously, author seems to have taken Blackie the lazy dog and Whitey/Xiao Bai the servant robot from GOAW as well. While the comedy is pretty good, author overuses it a bit without really changing much, so it'll probably get old later and is already starting to for me.

And the side characters seem to have some brain holes as well, like, is Journey to the West that meaningful? How do they not realize that the story takes place in a totally different universe than their own? It's kinda obvious, since there's a noticeable lack of modern xianxia elements in it....

Anyway, a good enough read for passing time, but probably not worth spending money on. <<less

Comedy with the dao of overthinking. Don't treat it too seriously and the novel is quite fun to read. There's certainly some parts that's too draggy and skimping through it is fine.

A good read if u got time to kill, although the misunderstanding isn't resolved (at least not until chapter 842), it kind of makes sense as it will be difficult to write further chapters, I think the MC will find about his powers in the last chapter or somewhere near to it, it's more comedic than serious, overall its pretty fun to read even though the misunderstandings can get kinda annoying, I recommend reading it if u like light comedy and misunderstandings.

I think that people downplay this novel to much.

Yes it is repetative.

Yes it has a lot of tropes.

... more>> Yes it can be boring.

HOWEVER, every time I think about dropping it, I give it a few more chapters before I start laughing again.

Dont get me wrong, you wont always feel happy or be laughing while reading this, but I feel like the majority of the reveiws are downplaying it to much, most of the tropes are just to put a smile on your face, while the true comedy is almost always original.

There is plot development, which is rather abvious for people that actually pay attention, and the romance is good too.

There are also reveiws about "disturbing scenes" but all I can say is that those people cant take a joke.

Wanting to cannabalize their uncle because MC grilled his arm? The mc's cooking skills are insane is the point here. Even the owner of the arm is eating it after the MC grills it!

Cultural differences because the guy wants to eat his pets? Anybody paying any attention to the story would obviously know how much he tresured them, and how he feels about his hunger towards them. Where tf are the differences in culture? <<less

Read the raws, but anything involving poetry is going in one ear and out the other completely undigested. f*ck that shit. I can barely stand prose in English. I'm also writing this as I read, so I might contradict things I said early on later in the review.

It has it's moments. In one of the early arcs, ... more>>
Spoiler

the MC picked up a demon sword that was just lying around outside his home. The demon sword tried to turn into a human form to torment the MC but got foiled by a brush. "The pen is mightier than the sword", get it?

[collapse]

Really it's the little details in each arc that attract me, since the main formula is basically "MC does something he finds normal" "Everyone else expresses their utter shock at his abnormality" "They all conclude he's a hidden expert", rinse and repeat. Admittedly, there is a wee bit of tragedy in being the only person to find everything he does normal. It's like if all the wonder and mystery behind magic was wiped out. Sad.

I find it quite amusing how
Spoiler

the cure to having the bejeezus scared out of you is cliffhangers. I see you author, you ain't slick.

[collapse]

Feel like the MC is the deus ex machina, instead of having to rely on one. Yet he's so oblivious to it...

I suspect the truth of that world is that all the exaggerated sayings in our world actually carry weight in that world, which is why the System had the MC become a man of culture...

Spoiler

Find it hilarious how that one scholar the MC told to understand mortals more went and stared at a bunch of people like a creepy stalker lmaooo

[collapse]

Actually this whole novel could be a meta for the Watsonian/Doylist approaches. For those who don't know, Watsonians interpret a text as it would be perceived by the characters while Doylists interpret texts based on author intent. For example, the Watsonian reason behind something happening in the story could be a long list of coincidences that culminated in the result (think MC gains opportunity to learn some ancient technique because it was left behind by a destroyed civilization or something in normal xianxia stories), but the Doylist explanation is just because the author wanted to write a power trip. In this novel, the MC would be like the author while the other characters are like the characters in a novel. While the characters in the novel are speculating on what purpose the higher power has behind every move, the higher power is just flailing about and doing stuff that somehow comes off as profound.

Think a saying in Chinese (that is used in the novel itself actually) is that the listener thinks more deeply than the speaker. Meaning the person who spoke the words might not have meant anything more by them, but the listener is predisposed to listening for hidden meanings and so find some where there were none intended. Ergo, I know the author probably doesn't intend any of the hidden messages, but it's fun to dissect the text (as long as I'm not coerced into writing literature reviews for it).

Hmm, maybe the twist is that the real highest level world is ours? I mean, if you consider the many many stories where immortals want to descend to the mortal realm, it could be an allegory for wanting to abandon the real world for a fictional one. Can relate.

I do find it mildly unsettling that sapient creatures are on the menu (if they can talk, I reckon that's a pretty good measure of sapience), but maybe that's just me. Maybe pseudo-cannibalism is more common in this world? I mean, I guess they eat humans, but humans eating talking animals that can take human form? What if they're innocent of eating humans? Can't help but feel bad for the animals...

At first I kinda thought everyone was just misunderstanding that the MC was a mortal when he actually is a mortal, but due to the power of repetition, I am very suspicious that it actually is the case and the MC is just a master at deluding himself so much that his inner monologue is unreliable. The only other option is a legendary level of obliviousness. Either way, something is legendary.

The MC is kinda just collecting all the sects' greatest treasures and using them as decoration lmao

It's just occurred to me that the MC's ignorance might be best for his mental health, since an obsessive person would double and triple check to make sure they don't accidentally let loose a world-ending calamity just by throwing out the tr*sh lmao. Can you imagine checking your rubbish to make sure a dangerous SCP hadn't made its way into it? Every single time? Or he'll end up not throwing anything away at all and living in a dump.

I'm always rather confused as to why cultivators pursue immortality to the point that they spend decades and even centuries in seclusion. Like, what's the point of living forever if you're going to be spending most of that time fridged?
Spoiler

Yes that was a pun and a reference to Chapter 87.

[collapse]

I haven't even lived three decades yet and I already think I've lived pretty long.

How oblivious is this MC to think everything has voice command enabled? lol

Huh, you know, it might actually not be the MC's doing that he appears like a hidden expert, but the act of a higher power (that's not meta since the author definitely counts) like the system or the heavenly dao that finds amus**ent in making cultivators bow down to a mortal. Either way, the MC is right that his golden finger is luck haha

Chapter 117's ending is hilarious:
Spoiler

the MC left on a long trip, so all the legendary entities could finally drop the "I'm totally a normal object/animal/plant" pretense. It's like when the parents aren't home so the teenagers throw a party lmaoooo. Legit though, how does the MC find leaving his house to his dog (instead of his robot assistant) a normal thing to do?

[collapse]

Ch 121:
Spoiler

so this is how SCP 1762 originated lmao

[collapse]

I like how despite believing that the MC is this hidden expert who likes to pretend he's a mortal, they still insist that he must need some treasures despite his words saying he just needs some simple household objects. Like, way to get the lesson to fly over your head. It's like "wow this person is filthy stinking rich and can get the best money can buy (and some things money can't buy), he must want xxx brand's items".

Like in all xianxia novels, it's best to assume the antagonists are pure villains and don't have any innocent family members unless you want to start hating the MC (which would be a problem given how long the novels generally are, ergo, you'll be stuck with the MC for a long, long time, so best to do your best not to hate them). Still this MC is fairly tame by xianxia standards (though maybe it's just because he's in the mindset of a mortal, and so didn't lose all his morals), just maybe something to keep in mind if you've just come from fics where the MCs are paragons of virtue and righteousness.

Chapter 145 and 146 has me shaking my head at cultivator mindsets. Honestly, I don't know why I even bother given that it's been established that they don't even mind eating animals that can talk, let alone one that's been treated as a beloved pet. I think this is as far as I'm getting guys, I don't think I can take 700+ more chapters of treating clearly sentient beings as a food source.

Really if you wanted a similar story without the morally shot MC, go read Beware of Chicken on RoyalRoad. <<less

the story could be more enjoyable even if its so repetitive if only the MC didnt add other unnecassary characters going out and living with him all the time, just MC with daji and some light heart slow romance is enough

but for some reason author suddenly add 2 little kids who dont even help in any way of the story other than making kids mistakes and then MC resolving it again and again, its so annoying, not to mention the author is so adamant keeping them all the time, I... more>> would like to see the old dweller on MC side like that dog instead of those 2 critters

the plot could be improved if only the author could be more creative and flexible with his writing, I could see a lot of angle to be taken but the author butchered them senselessly

instead we get same trope random find mc>shocked>see his land and treasure>shocked>eat his food>shocked>misunderstand MC action>shocked>MC go out and find that the world is so backward, steal some idea and give to others>MC is saint! Shocked>MC talk about something and then it happened, MC shocked, MC acting like ret*rd and dont think further that it was caused by him>other shocked

the story where a dragon grill his own arm ALIVE, him and the others around think it was delicious and want to eat it is so disturbing, that one kid with MC actually want to canibalize his own uncle, this chapter is so bizarre, the author packed it like some sort of comedy

many of the MC actions of healing other is so s*upid, the author know a little bit about stitching and surgery but he dont know about anesthesia (MC just said, bear it a little I will just puncture your skin, oh youre still conscious? Just bear it), its like everyone in that world doesnt have nervous system and they dont feel pain whatsoever

summary, everyone around MC except his dog are all psychotic <<less

It had the potential to be a 5 star novel but unfortunately the MC is the type of chinese who like to eat any living being who cross it's way. The only time when he doesn't eat an animal is when it is better alive than dead or when he pity it (he's a good samaritan, he'll never kill a defenseless injured animal -_-)

It sometimes feels repetitive (especially lunch time which are boring as ****) but I still find the humorous situations very enjoyable (for once the misunderstanding aren't... more>> forced and the MC isn't dumb, he can see that the cultivators are too friendly and too impressed by little idioms but to him it's mostly because although they can live for a very long time they are just too bored and ignorent after passing most of their long life in secluded cultivation or in battle) <<less

This novel is hilarious, as someone who enjoys misunderstandings this is fantastic...

Here we have a MC that transmigrated into a xianxia world, with a system... only he doesn't have cultivation talent, and the system's goal is to have him learn all sorts of artistic and scientific knowledge... when he finally mastered everything the system left...

So now the MC lives isolated in a great building with his robot servant... but it turns out his knowledge is pretty much heaven-defying with things like his air purifier creating spiritual qi... or his vegetables... more>> being so good that they impart cultivation insights... as a result the people who come to visit (powerful or otherwise) end up assuming he's some sort of super master... and everyone, EVERYONE overthinks anything he says... and the contrast is absolutely hilarious

It does however seem to indicate that hopefully things will become deeper than they seem
Spoiler

For example, it's one thing when a cultivator thinks the MC is super deep, and it's entirely another thing when an immortal ITEM heeds the MCs words without any prompt

[collapse]

If you enjoy a slice of life with misunderstandings, this is for you... if, however you cannot stand the fact that everything occurs as a result of a misunderstanding, and the fact that this novel is all about misunderstanding after misunderstanding, then you should simply turn away... <<less

no reviews? Well I really liked this novel, its about this dude who's been isolated for years mastering all the four arts to the pinnacle and not learning anything about cultivation but somehow gets mistaken as immortal living a mortal life, A part I like is that his insight towards the painting dao and stuff is really useful for others to cultivate so its not like he's 100% good for nothing

This is exactly what you would expect if you have read any of the others with the exact same premise.

It was alright when the main character was actually involved. Unfortunately 90% of it is the MC sitting at home while other people go out and fight things. And 90% of that feels like them getting their ass kicked before getting saved by something related to the MC. I eventually started skimming those parts for Story bits in between the descriptions of ridiculous attacks.

Payoff for Some of the build up is... more>> pretty lacking in a number of cases as well. Training arcs/powerups that do nothing more than bring characters to the new power minimum to be somewhat relevant, or 100+ chapter antagonists that I can't remember how they were wiped out.

When the MC is actually moving around I did enjoy it, but after about the halfway point that basically stopped happening as the plot starts taking place too far away from his home.

Spoilers for how long it sticks to the oblivious MC trope:
Spoiler

This story sticks to the trope till the very end. We dont see him realize his power until the last couple chapters. He does realize he has god tier luck, which gets him a defensive power he uses a couple times but doesn't fully understand.

This novel is extremely repetitive. If you purely focus on the MC, you would be bored out of your mind. I found some mild enjoyment in the constant misunderstandings and power progression of the side characters, but I know that's not everyone's cup of tea. The overarching plot is decent though and it has a satisfying ending, which already puts it above a lot of novels.

This novel would be a 5/5 if it was 200 chapters instead. Fun for a bit, but the rest was intentionally acting like the characters didnt realize the gimmick and sh*t eating jokes in the meantime which wasnt fun for the reader at all.

If you skip majority of eating chapters, it's pretty fine. Especially if you didn't read anything of this kind of plot before.

There's not that much of MC actions in this novel, majority of chapters is either people do something they're think MC want them to do or MC preparing food/feasting with other characters.

Same as what the others have said + MC is kinda creepy if you think about it objectively.

The whole story keeps repeating itself over and over, there is no proper plot or anything for readers to be excited about. I mean, I get it, it is a slice of life story but it's done in a particularly boring way. The story is just repeating itself on the fact that MC is clueless about his abilities while other people are just marveling at how OP he is. Also, the whole building... more>> is so bad. For some reason, even with this being a cultivation world, the standards of life is incredibly low, so much so that it makes me confused. Both the cultivators and the ordinary people act like some real bumpkins where even mirrors have not been invented and they go gaga over some food. Yes, the food has some spiritual power and stuff in it which makes it worthy of gushing over, but the cultivators gush over the food even before realising that it had spiritual power in it, almost as if the MC was the only one capable of invention in the whole entire planet. Ok, fine, maybe that it is how it is in this story, but the MC is borderline creepy. Almost every single time he describes a beautiful woman/girl he has to grossly hint of the possibility of making her his girlfriend (more like s*x sl*ve). It's almost as if he is only being nice to them for the purpose of being a "nice guy" to get them to be his girlfriend. Although, this is not unique to this story as so many other Chinese xianxia novels like to run this pattern of grossness.

Other than that, I do like how they don't have those s*upid brainless enemies who run headfirst into insulting the protagonist and dying. And, as long as you discount the fact that the MC is kind of a creep, he has a pretty nice personality. Also, I like his dog. <<less

I'm gonna be honest with you, I like this novel, even though there are repetitives here and there. I especially like how the MC is oblivious to his strength and awesomeness... that is, until I wrote this review.

At this point, the MC is starting to realize his own strength, which I don't like. I would like it if he continues to be unaware of his strength until a few chapters before the novel ends, if possible.

Another thing that I don't like is that it focuses too much on food. I... more>> would've liked to see more of his other talents like crafting, painting, playing the zither, reciting poems and the likes, but unfortunately, it's food all the way.

It's a slice-of-life kind of novel with the MC living his ordinary life unaware that he's a bigshot, so don't expect too much when reading it. <<less

It had potentials and the MC has a nice character but I feel the author ideas and plots were poorly executed. The characters behavior and plot are very illogical and 2d, even if I try to overlook somethings more keep popping up. The author wants to make the MC look Mr. Perfect immoral but it only made the story look dump and repetitive to me. I don't think I can keep up as I don't see it getting any better
