Manato, a second-year high school student, was starved for affection.

His mother was always out working, his sister had been ignoring him for the past six months, and his childhood friend, who he thought was the only who loved him, said that she found someone else she liked.

Still, Manato tried to get them to love him.

But then he saw his mother, who usually had a tired look on her face, talking to his sister with a smile.

That was when his heart broke.

I am being prejudiced and feel free to ignore my review and establish your own opinion.

But it's shit. Any novel doing this:

"... Sayaka was merrily reminiscing about that guy, but nothing was registering to my ears. I didn't even want to think about anything..."

... more>> is shit. This is chapter one. Drama happens because MC stopped comprehending words mid conversation.

That's your warning on first chapter that author is going to create increasingly convoluted bullsh*t so that MC can live in his make believe world. He stops listening people. He hears but ignores people. He rans away pathetically in mid conversation because he assumes something ridiculous etc. etc. Now if that's what you are into, go ahead.

Now the prejudice. Normally I'd just ignore this WN. Because this is junk food. You read couple of misunderstanding chapters and wait for the payout when things are resolved. It's your usual dime a dozen cliche japanese WN. But then author revealed that MC is a Nice Guy™.

Spoiler

"... Are you sure you want to go to school with me? Sayaka has someone she likes, right? And yet you wanted to go school with me, so wouldn't that person you like misunderstand you?"

As I said that, Sayaka's face turned a bit red.

"I-it's fine!"

She said out loudly. I wasn't sure what was fine with this.

Was Sayaka really that unfaithful? The feelings I had for Sayaka seemed to have changed at this moment.

Dude WTF! She is your childhood friend that you have been walking together for ages. Let's ignore the fact that the person Sayaka, for some unfathomable reason, likes is you. Assume that she likes another person. Why should she stop walking with you? Why should walking with a friend be unfaithful.

Good but generic "misunderstanding" story. The MTL isn't great, but it's readable. A few readers criticized him for being immature (well, he said "crybaby b*tch"). Guys, he's 12, his dad just died, and his family has been ignoring him for months! If he wasn't sad I'd worry about his sanity!

Short version:

Dad dies when the kid is around 12. His now single mother buries herself in work and only shows love & attention to her grade school daughter because she's a few years younger and needs it more.

Spoiler

Another reader criticized him for requesting that his mother, who's working hard to support her family, cook for him. Cooking here is more of a metaphor, he's asking his mother for love and attention.

[collapse]

The sister is a b*tch, she only spoke to her brother once in 6 months, and that was to call him "annoying".

Childhood friend, his only emotional support, causes a misunderstanding that makes him question if anyone loves him.

Spoiler

The Childhood-friend said she likes someone, and he doesn't understand it's him. Yeah, he's a dense tween who just got his heart broken, naturally his brain shuts down halfway through the conversation.

She's getting "love advice" from a handsome sempai, talks happily with him, and forgot the protag's birthday (which was his cut-off point for "trying to be loved"). From his perspective he cares A LOT more about her than she does about him. And being around the woman you love as she fawns over someone else hurts like hell! It's natural to take a distance.

the premiere is good but the development leaves you wondering they are idiots, the atmosphere in the series seems to be adolescents but they are children, so there situations in which they would be adolescents with thoughts of children and super forced

It's good story, a bit realistic of the effect of emotional neglect. The MC hunger of love & attention from his family and dumb childhood friend. Does who said that he is childish is s*upid, bcuz he is really a CHILD !!! A neglected child on top of that.

Try to put yourself in his shoes, every morning you greet your mother only to hear she say, 'Im going to work'. and He basically beg her to cook for him even once but no she's too busy for that, and the... more>> MC understand that, he try to considerate to his mother. Then he tried to greet and get attention from his sister only get cold shoulder and glare instead. The girl he like said he has crush on someone (its the MC) but got misunderstood because that s*upid girl get too chummy with the handsome senpai, who in the world didnt misunderstood for that. You already told u have crush then suddenly out of nowhere there is some handsome guy that act familiar with u. Of Course he will get misunderstood.

And Boom on his birthday's they still act like that and that already touch his bottom line. He tried to talk with his mother still got the same respond, talk to his sister, his sister said he is annoying can u imagine that, on your birthday your family said that to you instead of 'Happy Birthday' he listened phrase 'annoying' from his sister. That there basically break his already fracture heart to half pieces. Not enough with that the girl he like FORGOT his birthday !!! that made his already broken crush to pieces. After that he waiting for his mother to come home at 1AM and his mother just didnt say anything so he thought 'Oh you forgot my birthday' and that there is checkmate.....

Actually this still can be fixed, if his mother that time just run toward him and hug him and said 'I Love You' and apologize maybe he can still feel 'ouh I still loved by my mother' but no she didn't do anything, she just stand there shock looking at her son call her a Liar. And the result of this got called by her son with her name, he's not calling her mother or mom any more, he called her name like stranger now that already mess up.

This is the result of emotional neglected and depression to a person. This still consider a miracle because he didn't even consider to take his own life, if this in reality he already hang himself in his room. So that means they can still mend they family relationship even though it will probably take a long time to mend it though. Shame the novel got deleted though want to know what happen in the end of this frustrating and depressing story <<less

I wanna bring another opinion on this. The story is not bad, but it's written poorly. It's catered to a particular audience.

It's the type of story that only attracts certain type of people which have been emotionally hurt by their family or other. Pretty sure that's why people don't like the protagonist since they never experienced or understand that kind of emotional pain. So, keep that in mind if you are interested in reading this.

The protagonist, in my opinion, is realistic. He is an adolescent and emotionally hurt. He will... more>> refuse to listen to anybody. The best way to help him is probably with family counseling and therapy.

So, yeah, it's kinda messy with all the forced misunderstanding to make the protagonist depressed.

Spoiler

It all started after his father's death.

MC, his mother, and his younger sister are all going through grief.

His younger sister is jealous that MC is happy spending time with his childhood friend instead of her after their father's death, so she refused to talk with him.

His mother who is overworking to support her family focused on giving attention to the younger sister after the father's death because she is the youngest.

MC misunderstands her childhood friend when she said she found someone she likes after he spots her having a friendly conversation with a senior. The childhood friend is trying to get love advice from the senior who already has a gf.

Then, he spots her younger sister and mother having fun without him which caused him to break. In reality, they were secretly planning to have a surprise birthday party for MC.

[collapse]

I'll give 2/5 since I have no idea the direction that the author is trying to go for in the story. It's mostly MC feels sad because the characters fail to properly communicate with him. <<less

For this kind of stories, from what I read the MC is kinda childish. 1. I mean sure the MC could hate the sister for ignoring him for 6 month and Lil bitty witty harsh on him : like saying "Annoying" to him and doin prank on him by hiding his phone (bro this is normal thing irl). But come on he dislike his mother for doing a job to feed both the MC and sister ? His father in this story is dead ofc she need to work. As... more>> a man who raised by a singlemother.. This MC is a crybaby b*tch.

2. The usual MC misunderstood childhood friend for liking someone else. The MC deadass angry cuz she saying HBD one day late and she "has" someone she like (the MC obviously). Like Brooo wtf is this

If you want to comparing this to other similar story then this MC definitely Weakass childish ungrateful bastard from my point of view.

So yeah

Is the MC good? No I dislike him very much

Is the story good ? Just read it <<less

I would honestly give it a 4.5 if possible, originally I was going to give a 4 but the story unfortunately cut a bit too close to home to me so I gave it extra half star since I gone through a similar experience. The protagonist seems to be at odd with his family, up to chapter 6 they had seemed to be planning something but it blew up in their faces. The childhood friend had a mixture of not being clear and bad timing that screwed her over. If... more>> you had social issues and family problems during middle and high school, this novel will probably cause some emotional backlash due to the protagonist's feelings. The first 3 chapters do need some proofreading but next 3 are improvements with just some minor punctuations and capitals adjustment. <<less

Lot of people dislike the MC, mostly because it's not fun to read about the suffering of a young boy who did nothing much to have a better life. It's not new, miserable protagonist are mostly hated in general.

In this case, I think the story is pretty realistic, the protagonist isn't completely white, but I think most of the wrong come from others. In the end, that family need to see a therapist and talk at beast, or at least to distance themselves from MC for a while, just to... more>> let the steam off.

For people who think the MC is an ungrateful brat, just remind that he is a middle schooler, and it looks like he experiences depression. He isn't old enough to have the recoil of his mother situation. And the mother admit that even if she has a lot of work, she had made time for the youngest child, but forgot her son is a child too.

Here a list of what is good and wrong from everyone from my opinion :
Spoiler

Protagonist

  • Good point
    • He tries his best to have some attention from his family and take care of the house while the mother is working
  • Bad point
    • He mostly doesn't get any clue about his environment, he doesn't hear people talking to him
    • He wants to be loved, but at the same time he is closed off to any interaction

Protag mother

  • Good point
    • She works hard as a single mother to feed her two children.
    • She really is busy with work
    • She is the only character that understood the problem of MC (but have absolutely no idea as to how to make him happy)
  • Bad point
    • she works hard after the death of her husband and decides to only spoil the youngest child. I understand that she have to work, but she made time for her daughter, but not her son.
    • She always takes the wrong answer or behavior.
      • Her son stay awake and sit on the floor until 2am that she's going home after work, just to tell her it was his birthday yesterday and think she had forgotten. Because she doesn't want to spoil the surprise party she prepared for him (but postpone because of work), she didn't say anything.
      • At this point, she knew of the fracture between her and her son. She is worried about him have a part-time job and start asking her daughter about it, like in front of him but quietly whispering. Then, after he went to his room, she realized she has excluded him from the conversation.

Protag sister

  • Good point
    • Hard to think of anything, I just said that she isn't that bad and she is still a child.
  • Bad point
    • She acts like a brat
    • She was awkward to reverse her own mess about her relationship with her brother. Even if she was noticing his suffering. But not after he closes himself off.

Protag childhood friend

  • Good point
    • None (I won't say “she isn't a bad person inside” because she is)
  • Bad point
    • She is inconsiderate and basically doesn't care about him.
      • She forgot his birthday
      • She only wants to go out with him because she was dumped by her cool sempai
      • She dismisses his feeling
      • She arbitrary decided to go out with him without his consent and use tear to have sympathy from outsider when he refused.
      • I doubt she even knows that he have difficult time with his family.
