The engagement of the younger sister of Viscount Ragulen, Lucia, was suddenly dissolved by Count Gourman. The reason seemed to be her dowry.

But, when she thought about it, it was better to support her brother, Alves, and work hard to rebuild her territory than to marry the arrogant count.
Rather, the annulment was the best thing that could have happened to her!

It was a start to days full of happiness.

However, Lucia received an invitation for Gorman’s wedding from the countess. She knew it was to insult her.
Nevertheless, due to her family stature, she was obliged to attend. But alas! Her brother was too busy to go with her.

When her brother and sister were at a loss, her brother’s friend, Phil, offered to accompany her.

3.5 stars: That title is literally two full sentences lol. Anyway, 3.5 stars for being inoffensively fluffy without much plot and generically okay-likeable characters, marked as 3 stars because it's pleasantly cute but kind of unmemorable. This isn't exactly a riveting story or a complex one, the romance is conventionally predictable and amusing, and I'd say it's a light read that's nice enough if you just want something straightforward and simple. The translation is also good.

The story also isn't as long as it looks since the last batch of chapters... more>> are vignettes from mob characters' POVs like a maid and a knight focusing on the main couple, and a few prequel chapters and side story chapters—none of these add much to the story in terms of revelations, or plot or character.

The actual story can be summed up in two sentences:

Spoiler

Lucia and Phil go to the wedding where everyone is in awe of/fearful of Phil who puts the villains in their place instead of letting them humiliate Lucia. Later Lucia finds out Phil is actually the prince, he proposes, and she accepts. The end. No real conflict, drama, or other twists involved.

[collapse]

The MC Lucia is our first-person narrator and she's a straightforward protagonist—a bit clueless when it comes to her brother's friend Phil, socially awkward due to not mixing much in high society despite technically being an aristocrat because her family his poor, and sort of resigned and initially upset by but later practical about her canceled engagement. And that's about all there is to her. But since the story is short, simple, and angst-free, that's okay

Her brother Alves is protective of her and does want the best for her, and it was nice to read about poor sibling nobles who weren't at odds with each other, and with the brother not being a rabidly overprotective lion (well, sort of) and/or simping sis-con. I mean, there's the expected dynamic where he frequently threatens Phil against getting any ideas about Lucia, but he and Phil are actually good friends at the same time and it does seem like Alves doesn't completely object to Phil having potential interest in Lucia.

Phil is the type of hero who comes to the siblings' house to escape work and indulge in eating Lucia's home-cooked meals, and will both sleep on the floor and basically throw a tantrum on the floor because he doesn't want to go back to work. Even Lucia is like, "A grown man acting like a baby is silly", but while she rolls her eyes, she gives in and hand-feeds him steamed bread in order to persuade him to get up and actually leave to do his job. I found his doleful, woeful antics amusing.

The "plot" is quite short. The summary sets you up for the main conflict which is exactly as it sounds and it's predictably resolved quickly without much going on. Then the rest of the story sort of drifts along with Phil's Mysterious Identity That Is Not At All Heavily Telegraphed And Very Obvious and his "romance" with Lucia, which is sort of cute albeit highly predictable and generic, and then the story just kind of ends in a way that's vaguely unsatisfying—like there's not enough falling action, and the extras aren't really much in the epilogue department.

EDIT: I see on the novelupdates page it says that there are ongoing extras and light novel chapters, which apparently haven't been translated. My review is for up to chapter 59 of American Faux's translation. Somehow though I doubt that any further extras would really flesh much out, considering the current extras, but hey, you never know.

Anyway, it wasn't a bad read even if it wasn't a great one or particularly memorable. It was a nice way to turn my brain off and pass the time reading a relatively relaxing angst-free and uncomplicated story. <<less

I have mixed feelings about the romance, but otherwise I love the concept and the translation quality. The FL a farming girl at heart - she hates conflict and noble society, loves cooking and relaxing outdoors, and generally thrives in a countryside life. The ML is (surprise surprise) the prince, and all the characters keep her in the dark on his identity for 5 or so years despite the ML throwing his identity around several times. So when the ML proposes to the FL, I feel uncomfortable with how easily... more>> the novel said the FL would just adapt to high society with the power of love, or how the author keeps trying to portray the ML as your average countryside bloke instead of as a prince with responsibilities and duties. As a real world parallel, it's like a girl marrying a guy for love while ignoring his crippling debt - it works, but it gives an uncomfortable feeling like everyone's sweeping something under the rug. Just my own opinion, though, and I totally recommend giving the novel a try! <<less

Short, sweet, and mostly darling.

A calm and charming country girl, often overlooked for her height and lack of money, has a smidge of a crush on her big brother's attractive and worldly friend, who steps in to make her feel like a princess when she is slighted by a scumbag.

A beleaguered and weary aristocratic young man finds solace and comfort in the simple and genuine interactions he finds with his best friend's younger sister on their out-of-the-way farm he escapes to whenever he needs a break.

The well-matched pair begin to... more>> evolve into more when he steps in to do her the favor of squiring her about her loathsome ex-fiance's wedding in high form, though revelations about who he is out in the real world pose an obstacle.

What I don't like:

Spoiler

Not a deal breaker, but it does dampen things: There comes an age when every woman stops thinking Cinderella is a wildly romantic ideal, and instead starts worrying about her.

That auntie-like worry is evoked in this story.

This is partly due to the FL's age and sheltered upbringing. She is only 18, and hasn't really been anywhere but the farm. This vs. A worldly member of the royal family, who grew up in the Capital, traveled extensively, acted as commander of an army during a war, and is about 7+ years older than her.

And largely to do with the ML's escalation from zero to a thousand in under a second, and his steamrolling.

While yes, they have known each other for years in a sibling-esque fashion, after two dates, (where the FL didn't even view things as romantic dates, but rather as a nice, more worldly family friend acting in a mentor-ly way towards her, the country bumpkin little sister) the ML immediately jumps to declaring he will give up his birthright, defy the king, and abscond from the army, all to marry the teenaged FL, who is still in the "wait, your real identity is what?" stage.

The FL and her own brother are quite practical about the realities of a match with such wide class differences, but the ML quickly descends into frantic destined fantasy mode, and turns into a clingy, whiny, octopus who is desperate to pretend it will all work out due to the Power of LoveTM. When the FL protests that she cannot accept, he sends knights to monitor and "protect" her, also a read flag, and puts her in the line of fire with his very powerful older brother.

The two are wonderful matches, personality-wise, but one can't help the Auntie-worry that she is way, way too young and inexperienced to understand the repercussions and consequences of letting herself get swept away by a grown man with too much money, power, and strings for her to handle, and that both of them need to wait several years and calm down.

Alves best bro duh

Edit: so, I skimmed the raw and its soooooooooo cute, like???? Definitely try this if you're looking for fluff with slight drama (no, the drama doesn't involve the ex fiancee/white lotus bs), but straight forward nonetheless. Phill, lucia and alves are amazing I love the trio

Really good, very fluffy and tame with just right amount of angst mixed with it.

The interactions of the three are really entertaining and raw, and the main conflict here made me feel emotions lmao I wasnt sure whether to feel frustrated or sad because of whats happening.

The conflict is also a very real thing if you consider their status so thats a plus.

I wish theres more omake tho : (like wheres the kids?? I need more pure fluff without stress

With so little to judge this by, I'm a bit surprised at the downvotes. I gave it a 5, since it didn't bite. We open with our protagonist, Lucia, having her engagement broken and some set up about her family's situation. The world building is nice, although I get the sense that there is more to learn.

It's a feudal society and some of her ancestors used their fortunes... poorly. She and her brother are not letting that get them too down and are trying to protect each other and their... more>> lands but there's a lot of pressure and possibly a conspiracy going on in the noble factions of this country. We've just met a mysterious person who is likely our male lead. If so, they have an easy going relationship (at least until she learns his true identity?) and I look forward to learning more. <<less

This one was cute but I had a harder time getting into it, and I was REALLY annoyed that it was incomplete. It was a cute, fun read, but it just didn sit well with me for some reason. I tend to not like the Japanese novels as much for some reason, and this kind of fit into that - the romance usually feels strained and forced to me, and this was the same.

Well translated as usual by American Faux with their fun little notes to boot.

Theres not a ton of substance it's just a short little love story. I will say I enjoyed the first half more then the second half but overall it's fine. The characters are pretty two dimensional without much to them and very little plot although I did enjoy the brother and Phil quite a lot. The MC irritated me a touch although I couldn't tell you why. Overall this is an inoffensive story and I don't feel... more>> like I wasted time on it. If you want something short that you don't need to think hard about but is still kind of cute then I'd say you could give this a go. <<less
