I Was a Substitute

I’ve lived my life as everyone wanted me to, the perfect Young Miss. But I was only adopted to fill the vacancy of the real Duke’s daughter. When the real Miss returned, they all turned their backs on me.

“If I had known this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have let you in.”

I loved them dearly, but to them I was nothing but a substitute for a Young Miss.

“Should I tell you something before dying? Actually, I’m a fake too.”

The Young Miss, who seemed like an angel, was actually a fake. Just like their ‘false love’, which I believed in.

“Can I call you Big Sister from now on?”

I had no choice but to reply with a lie as well.

I swallowed the dry saliva down my throat reflexively at the red eyes looking down at me. I could see the man’s bare chest through his open shirt.

“When did you find out about what I’d dug up?”

“I’m quite sensitive about these things.”

Which means he knew from the start— the sound of me gulping was louder than expected, and I opened my eyes wide in shock.

“Enjoyed the show?”

“No, I didn’t see anything!”

“I already know that you were pretending to be asleep.”

Appears to be a combination of two standard types of stories-- the "real daughter is usurped by a fake who turns everyone against the true daughter, then reveals she's fake just before the true one is executed, the true one is reborn into the past and seeks revenge/ claims her rightful place/ makes her family regret liking the other one and makes them like her better" and the "poor, down on her luck, noble girl marries into the absurdly powerful and rich family with the absolutely horrible reputation for being... more>> 'monstrous', only they turn out to be not that bad, and soon she has the entire family whipped and worshipping the ground she walks on"

Some parts don't make sense at all and are clearly for dramatic affect. Our heroine was an abandoned street child with amnesia who was taken as a replacement for a deceased daughter. She did not con them; her 'dad' has always thought of her has fake (or so he says). Still, she grew up in the family for well over a decade, and is well-loved. Yet, when the 'real' daughter appears, they are willing to have her executed. Like... why? That seems both extreme and completely unnecessary, and also, what exactly makes her worthy of a death sentence? And what sort of horrible person would suddenly decide to mu*der a person they raised from childhood? Why not just make her the adopted daughter or ship her off to university?

They do appear to be setting up the "kind and doting" Duke to be a selfish, self-serving jackass, who only likes his own benefit and views everyone else as expendable. This will likely serve to make him a foil to the future love interest I've yet to see.

It's not very far along, but the pace is quite accelerated so far. Can't tell yet if this will be a standout example in the two tropes, or just a mediocre one, so I'll keep an eye on it. <<less

A bit of a slow story so far, but it works so far due to the numerous promises made in the first few chapters and in the breadcrumbs that have been provided. The world-building isn't overwhelming, avoiding the pitfalls made by authors that use info-dumps. Also, I don't dislike the MC and ML? So far either as they act within the boundaries of their experiences, motivations and personalities. Not too shabby and I look forward to reading more of this highly-accessible translation.
