The rich contract husband Su Baibai The Salted Fish was married to passed away just a few days after she was enjoying the high life; both she and her stepson Gu Xiaobei were driven out of the family!

Gu Xiaobei: This woman will definitely leave me right away, who doesn’t know she married my father for money!

Su Baibai looked at the child from her widowhood in front of her; just as she gritted her teeth and left him behind, a cashback system fell from the sky!

“Congratulations on binding with the 10x rebate system! The target is Gu Xiaobei.”
“For every penny the host spends on Gu Xiaobei, you will be rewarded tenfold!”

Su Baibai was shocked and bought Gu Xiaobei a snack that cost 15 yuan.

System: Congratulations, you just received 150 yuan cashback!

Su Baibai rented a house costing 2000 yuan per month for Gu Xiaobei.

System: Congratulations, you received 20,000 yuan cashback!

Su Baibai’s eyes gleamed as she grabbed the Gu Xiaobai whom everyone had shown the cold shoulder and said:

“From this day onward, I am your mother!”

Gu Xiaobei’s friends and nemesis thought that since Gu Chenyuan passed away and did not leave any money for Su Baibai, she will definitely desert Gu Xiaobei.

Never in a million years would they think that Su Baibai would buy her stepson a foreign luxury car, hire the most expensive nutritionist to prepare his meals, and throw the most extravagant birthday party for him…

Even the company Su Baibai founded was for Gu Xiaobei, the yacht was bought for him, and the private jet was also under his name!

Su Baibai may have gotten rich overnight, but those riches did not stay on her person long because they were exchanged for blueprints of various cutting-edge technology in the internal Cashback System marketplace: intelligent robots, holograms, microchips, stealth aircraft, treatment pods… Even the robotic exoskeletons, mecha, and the principles for manufacturing airships surpass Blue Star’s* state-of-art technology….

*Blue Star, a technology company that produced an assistive walking exoskeleton, is used as the field standard by this author. It is also implied that Gu Chenyuan is the head of Blue Star.

Su Baibai was originally a physics and software engineering double major from a prestigious school; backed by the system’s revolutionary technology and her genius son, they built up the small company left by President Gu Chenyuan into the top technology company under Blue Star.

What man, she just wants a career now!

Gu Xiaobei, who initially thought of Su Baibai as a gold digger:

“She is so rich, I think that my father is actually her gigolo all along.”
“She loves my father so much, even though my father is dead she still spoils me like her own son!”
“She hid her strengths and didn’t become a scientist to contribute to the country; instead worked as a secretary to stay by my father’s side for ten years!”

“Looking back, my slag of a father gave Su Baibai nothing aside from money and fame, even used her as a shield*.”
*to ward off marriage proposals
“Most importantly, he has delayed the development of Blue Star Technology far too much!”
“No, I have to find myself a gentle and reliable stepfather!”

Watching her willful stepson go from rebellious to enterprising, even being able to manage the company for himself and to support her, Su Baibai felt like she has reached the pinnacle of life!

What could beat not having to give birth to any kids, and having such an obstinate son show filial piety?
Having a man? He would get in the way!
After raising her son so well, the child’s father did not actually die and came back?!

Gu Chenyuan who has been silently watching behind the scenes this whole time to find out the internal traitor within the Gu family:
“She truly loves me so much, despite being this wealthy she stayed by my side as a secretary for ten years! When I was looking for a contract wife, she immediately offered to marry me; she must have had a secret crush on me for years!

Gu Chenyuan: “Stinky little brat, stop looking for a man to be your mom’s lover! Do you take me for dead?!”

Gu Xiaobei: What to do, this slag isn’t worthy of my mom, should I write him off as dead to me?

I've finished the novel, so I'll tell you my opinion. It's not a 5-star novel.

The previous reviewer is a bit wrong about the female lead - she's basically demis*xual and other than appreciating good looks, she feels nothing for men. She treats her stepson's friends as a younger generation and there's no point in the novel where she even considers one of the guys, who's like 22 (friends with a 14-year-old? okay, author). She finds it bizarre when he confesses to her and rejects him immediately. But one thing the... more>> reviewer is on point - the netizens' comments. The author uses it as a vehicle for her plot, to show the reactions to the inventions and so on. At one point, I started just skipping them cause they usually bring nothing to the story, and I ended up skipping half the chapter haha. It's frankly overused.

Now, let's talk about the good first. When you strip the novel down to its bare bones, it's about family affection. Blood or non-blood related. It can be very touching at times. Especially near the end of the novel, I actually shed a tear or two. The sci-fi aspect, at its base, is also well-done. It's a spoiler because it's revealed near the end of the novel, but it's foreshadowed at the start.

Spoiler

Time travel and the related paradox of time travel. It was well thought out.

[collapse]

Now the bad things. Plainly put, the author lives in a small world, trying to write about a big world. Research on high-tech gadgets is done in 5 days, production in 3... I don't want to delve into the details, whoever reads the novel will get that feeling - vague physics, math, and chemistry. Extremely quick research and production, sales, and money making. A lot is written about the "above" = government. There's a lot about the rivalry with the capitalist countries and some of it reads like the department of propaganda wrote it. There's some misunderstanding about how bureaucracy works in the West and how many people are actually involved, even when we speak about spies and conspiracies. I don't have the energy to point out everything. It was like reading a child's understanding of government work. It would've been fine to leave it in the novel if it was kept as vague as the scientific stuff. A novel needs its villains after all. But here, there's too much naivety about what happens behind the scenes in politics. And quite some idealizations and double standards contribute to the naive writing.

The author started with a decent idea and expanded into unfamiliar territory without the need to.

But leaving that behind, there are some weaknesses about the characters too. The main characters are all geniuses. That's fine. But sometimes, their decisions are illogical and plain dumb to suit the plot. The side characters also have their dumb moments. The police let a 14-year-old negotiate with enemy spies, because they had no better idea. Hmm. I won't give any other spoilers. You don't have to read critically to find those illogical moments.

So, I read it because I liked the main idea behind it. I skipped over the ridiculous stuff. Closed my eyes for the illogical stuff. It could've been a fairly decent novel. <<less

So I completed the story. The time travel threw me for a loop. I enjoyed the main skeleton of the story. But I've decided to keep the rating at 3 stars. It feels like the author wanted to write about too many things and the execution of it wasn't great. Also, the nationalism propaganda (and therefore things like racism) is so prevalent that I almost want to give this story one star rating. I really enjoyed the familial relationships and the romance line. It was great that we... more>> learned the whys behind the system.

I'm about halfway thru (using mtl) and honestly this isn't terrible. Based on the two existing reviews, I really thought it was going to be horrendous. But so far I'm enjoying it.

Just to address some things, including some things mentioned in the other reviews:
- Firstly, this is fiction. Slice of life fiction that starts off partially as comedic. So expect fictional premises and details. Yes the intelligence levels are wack. The technology and timeline is wack. But again, it's all fiction - suspend your belief!
- The MC being able to speed thru the technology stuff isn't crazy. The story basically sets her up as a genius (early graduation/skip grades, top of her grade while still working to make ends meet). Most importantly, her golden finger cheat is the system. It's not like the technology is original to her. Additionally, she has the company workers helping to iron out details (I believe this is outright stated) and that tutor/assistant she procured for her stepson.

- At once point, there really is a LOT of online commentary (just like an entertainment story or a livestream story) but I think it helps to give detail (maybe too much) to what is happening. Because otherwise, the author would just have to plainly state how the world views MC and her achievements/scandals. But I did skim a lot of it after the first few chapters of it.

- I enjoyed how romance isn't huge for the MC

- This is slice of life so we will see side characters that only make a brief appearance and then disappearance. Makes sense since MC is a essentially an antisocial person if we're being honest.

Some parts that bothered me but didn't stop me from reading:

- Based on the summary, I thought MC spending money on her stepson would continue very obviously through the entire story. It was definitely so in the beginning but in later parts, I just have to assume everything is being purchased for him.
- The nationalism propaganda in this story is next level. I skimmed a lot of it but there's just so much of it. It makes sense in the plot but wow. I had to add the tag. This isn't the small amount to pass censor, it's outright chunks of commentary and plot. It almost turned me off - it's definitely not enjoyable for sure.
- A lot of the world building doesn't make sense. Everything from running a business, how high end shopping works, research, spying, government entities, ext. It feels very fictional. (But since it all feels sooo fictional, it somehow works in my brain). Overall, I agree with Ludagad. I started reading because of the concept given by the summary. And there are some enjoyable parts of the story. It's not a five star (in writing, delivery, or accuracy to summary) but it's not terrible either. I'll give it a 3 and if I felt like I enjoyed it overall, I give it a 3.5 rounded up to a 4. <<less

Here why I dropped this novel~

The Female lead is 30 years old, her stepson is 14 years old. But he is already at High school, and I would say, okay, he skipt grads, but you know, all the friends around him are of his age??!! This I really can't understand. Are all high school students now at 14 in china? of curse no. Then?

Another thing, her stepson has a friend whom he studed with, but it happen that when the accident happen to them he was abroad, and... more>> when he came he call the stepson and talk with him as they always do and that just happen to be when the stepson birthday was coming? And here Gu Xiao Bie (the stepson) didn't doub anything. Will that okay, but you know, this friend whom he study with in high school and to be at the same age, but this friend happen to finish his high school, go abroad to study college and finish this too at the same year!! Wow, I really admir him! But this is not the issue, the matter is, the Female lead said, he is younger than her by just 5 or 6 yers, and when he tried to flirt with her, she didn't find that annoying because he is her son' friend, but found him attractiv!

(Gu Xiao Bie is still at 1st year of high school as most of, because sometimes the author will say that he is at 2nd grad, will, I really duobt that the author has some problem with number and keeping track of real life wither it's for ages or grads or whatever!)

And the matter that this smart femel lead can be too s*upid when she see this "friend" of her son, really make me.... Ahgh!

Another thing is this novel is totally about "internet comments", seriously!
It's hardly had anything go in real life (Except at the beginning), and if we had it, it had to be to laid a ground for this internet comments.
It made me too boring, I felt I'm reading an entertainment show novel where there too many internet comments, even so, here you may find it more than there! <<less
