An Rugu just graduated from university and returned to her small, mountain village to inherit a rundown Daoist temple.

The Daoist temple is simple and solemn, but there are no visitors, and there is no money for incense.

She heard that doing livestreams can earn money, so she decided to give it a try.

But her livestream isn’t singing and dancing—she tells fortunes.

——————

A divination livestream appeared on the Shark streaming platform, and the netizens who saw it dismissed it at first.

[It’s 2021, and there are still people who practice feudal superstition.] [Look at you, you scam artist.]

But soon enough, the comments changed completely.

[Ah, master, you said my head was a little green, and my boyfriend who has been with me for ten years really cheated on me!]

[Master, you said that I was facing a bloody disaster. Thank you, master, for saving my life.]

After becoming popular, An Rugu somehow took over the task of promoting the Netherworld and became its spokesperson to the living.

Livestream divination to the living during the day—live attraction for ghosts at night.

[My grandpa came to me in a dream and told me to burn more paper money, so he can reward the streamer with dream money. Damn, the Netherworld really exists?!”]

[F*ck! The thief cried and returned the money to me after seeing the appearance of Hell in the livestream. He said he doesn’t want to go to Hell in the future.]

—————

Slice of life—except that An Rugu’s daily life consists of livestream divinations, conversing with denizens of the Netherworld, and running a halfway home for ghosts who don’t want to reincarnate yet.

Oh, and she also manages a small Daoist temple atop a pretty mountain with a magnificent view of the sky, rising through the clouds.

Series translator here, hey!

This series is FASCINATING.

Are you familiar with the anime/manga Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume's Book of Friends) ? It's kinda like that—except instead of Japanese youkai, we get Chinese gwuaiwu—literally 'strange creatures'.

... more>> The divination livestreaming is fun; you can just treat it as being part of the livestream audience and enjoy the dog blood show. Bring your melon seeds.

But for me, the really interesting part is what's happening between the livestream episodes. An Rugu keeps stumbling onto ghosts, living corpses, cursed people, heart-controlling insects, gods who need her help. She's a magnet for all manner of strange things! And it's very interesting to explore Chinese mythology and folklore every time she has a close encounter with yet another yin being — as opposed to yang beings, which is us, the living.

Is it scary? Well, sure. There are long-dead people who want to marry the living! But it's more the goosebumps kind of scary than full-on horror.

Is there romance? There should be. But it's definitely not the focus of the story and will appear much later.

Is it episodic? It starts that way, but there is obviously an over-arching plot judging from all the foreshadowing that's been happening.

Is it funny? F*ck yeah! A running joke would be how An Rugu keeps getting richer and richer without her really meaning to, and she is deadpan about it.

Well, An Rugu is deadpan about most things. Which just makes it funnier.

Other stories have characters made up by their authors—the characters in this one have their own wikipedia entries lmao. It's certainly a challenge to translate all the historical/religious figures and Daoism concepts but I am learning A LOT and having fun besides, so I hope you have fun too when you give this a try.

P.S. An Rugu is very OP. If you're not into protagonists who whack their opponents 'dead' with one blow, you may want to give this a skip.

P.P.S. Who knew that the Chinese concept of the Underworld reflects the bureaucratic ways of the government! Seems you can't escape bureaucracy, even in death :D <<less

I recently had the pleasure of delving into a captivating novel that left a lasting impression on me. From the very first page, I found myself completely engrossed in the story, eagerly turning each page to uncover the next twist and turn. This engaging narrative had me hooked right from the start.

One aspect that truly stood out to me was the author's ability to create a story that effortlessly captivates the reader's interest. The plot was intricately woven, full of suspense and unexpected surprises that kept me on the edge... more>> of my seat. The seamless flow of events made it easy to follow the storyline, and the author's skilled storytelling made it an enjoyable and immersive experience.

What truly enhanced my enjoyment of this novel was witnessing the reactions of fellow readers. As a lover of books, I always find it fascinating to observe how a story resonates with different individuals. The positive audience response surrounding this novel was overwhelmingly evident. From book club discussions to online forums, readers were buzzing with excitement and anticipation, sharing their thoughts and theories. It was a testament to the author's ability to create a narrative that deeply resonated with a wide range of readers.

Furthermore, the smoothness of the prose was a notable highlight. The author's writing style flowed effortlessly, allowing the story to unfold with ease. The descriptive language painted vivid imagery, bringing the characters and their world to life. This seamless writing not only enhanced the reading experience but also added depth and authenticity to the story.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, I would have liked to see a bit more character development. Although the story was compelling, there were moments where I yearned for a deeper exploration of the characters' motivations and emotions. However, this slight critique does not diminish the overall appeal of the book.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this novel to anyone seeking an engrossing and well-crafted story. The author's ability to capture and maintain the reader's attention is commendable, and the positive audience reaction only further solidifies its appeal. With its smooth prose and intriguing plot, this book is bound to leave you entertained and eagerly anticipating the author's future works. <<less

A very fun novel that will make you laugh. It alternates between the fun Livestreams and the more serious real life adventures, with the later seemingly working towards a more serious plot.

Personally, I dont care for the non-Livestream chapters/adventures, but I guess it was to give the author some long-term plot/goal.

100% worth reading

I enjoyed reading this novel. MC is OP ... more>>
Spoiler

literally a god

[collapse]
but the novel doesn't focus on this.

It's mainly focused on the three divinations MC gives to her followers in her livestream. While many of the divinations are focused on people cheating there are some novel stories that I found quite interesting.

I've read many similar plots before but what stood out to me in this novel as compared to other such novels is that there are way more gods in the human world. Like the god of Drought, the Water god (s), the Star Lords (?) to name a few.

There is a hint of romance in the novel but nothing really happens, just that there is a person who has a one sided crush on our MC. At the end of novel there is a hint that they might get together.

I've said this before and I'll say this again. I love livestream novels because the commentary is really funny.

All in all, this novel helped me escape my hectic life a little and I am thankful. <<less

🌟Amazing.🌟

It shows a different view of Chinese culture and mysticism, much deeper and more complete than the usual Cnovels.

The story itself (as far as I've read at least) is mainly composed of many different stories, revealed or solved by the MC, and some slice of life to string them together.

... more>> Every story is treated very well by the author, and most could easily make a great novel by themselves.

The characters are mostly fleshed out pretty well, with good people being flawed, and bed people being complex and believable. At least for the most part.

Now for the (pretty negligible) problem:

While every character that gets proper attention is fleshed out and is treated as a flawed but not one dimensional person, many side characters are not.

I really am being petty here, but the main character is presented by the story a person who will punish people for what evil they do but still... I don't know, understand that they were complex? It's hard to describe so idk it's just a bit jarring that sometimes people are suddenly seen as one dimensional, just a villain. It's minor characters, but the MC is so wise, it's really weird to see her like that. (It became a rant, sorry😅)

Bottom line: probably the best cnovel I read in a long time very much recommended. <<less

A fascinating story about humans, ghost, demons, and gods. It allows us to learn more about Chinese mythology, introduces us to obscure but powerful figures -- such as Siming, Hebo, and Jiutian Xuannu-- without unnecessary info dump.

The end came sooner than I thought, though it was not so abrupt. I am still hoping MC will resolve more cases!

Still reading but it had been a blast so far. Will update review.

I read the translation (maela is excellent) until c54 and continued reading the original source.

I'm at c78 at the moment and the story has heightened the conflict level.
Spoiler
    • She was appointed as a level 1 Living Hell Emissary.
    • Youdu executed their first counterattack on FL.

Vivid storytelling, excellent storyline with weaved in mini story arcs revealing her powers and showed how she grew. A good balance of narrative, exposition and dialogue.

Great world building. Author created an engaging blend of Dao mysticism and underworld mythology, introducing an array of demons, spirits, gods.

Characters are engaging. The chat in the livestream is hilarious. I wondered if eventually a few would stand out as Minot characters.

Premise of the novel is pretty similar to 'I Became Popular in the Underworld After Live Broadcasting Taoism' but is much more lighthearted. The MC live broadcast fortune telling to the living and the dead in the underworld.

The MC's way of doing things is a bit annoying, like when talking with her destined people, she didn't say a word until the last minute and let those people come up with their own reasoning. I get that this is the way the author build up the suspense but it's very annoying.

The... more>> other thing I dislike is that there is no real fight most of the time when the MC met a powerful opponent, instead the fight ended with a talk no jutsu.

The 3rd thing I dislike is that there's no after story of the destined people, I kinda want to see what happens to them afterwards but they were simply forgotten.

I probably would've gave a higher rating if I didn't read 'I Became Popular in the Underworld After Live Broadcasting Taoism' first, because now I subconsciously compare the 2 novels and would naturally feel that this novel is a bit inferior. <<less
