The third young master of the Gu household, Gu Ye, had a wooden personality, a stuttering speech, couldn’t remember an answer after being told ten times, didn’t dare to protest after being bullied, was considered the shame of high society. His father, in a fit of anger, sent him back to the old home in the country for the new year. But unexpectedly, he came back like a new person, in half a year testing into the top university of the capital with the highest score in the whole school.

The entire high society circle was shocked!

After receiving his acceptance letter, the Gu family searched for Gu Ye for three days, and finally found him under an unassuming overpass. The Gu Ye who used to remain silent after being beaten had laid out a stall, stepping on a few hoodlums beneath his foot, and was selling drawings while he called out: “Exorcism Wards! Guanyin safety talismans! Wards against evil for the house! Anti-goblin and demon talismans! ……Supersale on wards and talismans! If you have the right karma, 88 per ward! Don’t pass this by!”

He looked down beneath his foot, saying with a grin: “I have special Give Up Wickedness Talismans, I think you each need three.”

Sassing heaven, earth, and air, if you don’t obey then let’s fight and don’t blather, supernatural arts grandmaster bottom. Polished scoundrel, beast in human clothing, wife-spoiling maniac, black-bellied top.

This story feels like it's an episodic-ish supernatural detective series... on crack. No, seriously, the humor is very well done and creates a bright counterpoint to some very serious social commentary and a dark horror setting.

I loved the warm and fuzzy family interactions that surround the MC, which serve as a great counterpoint to the sheer inhumanity (and that's not just talking about the undead) he comes across in his adventures. This is also a story which flouts the cliche of the evil step-family. Here, the MC's step-mother is his... more>> co-conspirator whenever trying to cajole something out of his father, and his younger step-brother is his number one fan. There's also his "family" of adopted supernatural orphans, which all come with interesting backgrounds.

By contrast, the BL romance feels much more understated. It's not that romance is totally absent from the story - sweet interactions with the ML do bubble to the foreground here and there - but it often isn't the story's focus. <<less

It's a bit soon to give five stars, but what can I say? It's just two chapters in and I already love the four characters who have been introduced, including the scheming-but-not-evilly pitiful stepmother and high-blood-pressure-induced violent father. The airheaded younger brother of our reborn protagonist is a breath of fresh air, too, and I think we all enjoy the shameless protagonist niche. What's not to love?

I do tend to feel badly for the original owner of the body in stories like this, though. I've made a lot of mistakes... more>> in my life, and will undoubtedly make more. Imagining myself dying in an untimely way and being taken over by an unrelated force more capable than myself who will avoid those mistakes doesn't really make me happy in any way. I suppose if it helps my family, though, like it seems to be in this case, it's less pitiable.

Anyway, it seems like it'll be a fun ride. <<less

The many plots in this story are a masterpiece of humor, horror, sadness, and the human psyche. Honestly, I'm only on chapter 117, and I'm speechless on how good the different plots are. In a way, this reminds me "Ghosts Know What I Experienced" mixed with Detective Conan. There's also SO many fun personalities that hang out with the MC. He has his own spirit & ghost children and ghost/crime hunting pals.

My favorite character, of course, is the MC, who is utterly hilarious, smart, shameless, and has his own sense... more>> of justice. He's a bit like a Wei Wuxian, but funnier, surprisingly enough. Each of the MC's family members are priceless gems as well. He has a silly younger step-brother who adores him; his 2nd brother has a very dry sense of humor about being a middle child which is understated, his first brother is amusing as well. The MC who is a bit OP, but has enough struggles for the reader to realize he's not completely immortal.

Also, surprisingly, almost tying with my favorite character is... the stepmother! ?

This was a shocker to me, since stepmothers are usually depicted as plotting against the MC and favoring their own son. At first, the stepmother came off a bit like that in the beginning, but as the reader learns more of her character, she truly loves the MC in her own way, and pretends to be long-suffering and strict on the MC -- but is like a lioness towards anyone who wants to hurt any of her children -- stepchild or not. Essentially, she's a tsundere.

A perfect example of this was when MC's his past life's real mother slapped him for digging up his past life's grave and leaving a hand print on his face. MC's stepmother happened onto the scene, seeing the MC shed tears, and went batshit-crazy, you-do-not-touch-my-son on her, swinging her arm with force to leave an equally red imprint on the woman's face. (This horrible woman, who abandoned MC as a child during his past life at a mass grave to climb the social ladder, so in his past life, he never experienced the true affection of a mother.)

She has a hidden sense of humor as well, and was the one to slowly convince MC's father to accept MC's relationship with the ML, despite initially claiming ML was "too good" for MC, lol.

There's so many gems of interactions between the MC and the stepmother that build so much depth between their affection for each other, too many to spoil. I actually feel she shows more depth in her love to the MC than his own father does.

The other thing I like about the story is the MC fights using his own abilities, and the ML mostly stays out of his battles, except the final battle with a powerful zombie.

Another big spoiler is the MC's original father is Yama (sometimes known as the King of Hell, King Yan or Yanluo).

The romance between the MC and the ML is a slow-burn romance, but it's super cute. The MC loves to tease the ML *all-the-time*, and eventually the ML picks up on those traits. <<less

This story focuses more on the MC's life hunting ghosts, resolving mysteries of paranormal nature and winning over his family's, the public's and other masters' affection than the romantic side, but it's still a very good story.

The MC is very carefree, funny and very OP with a very big heart. He does whatever he thinks is right and doesn't care what other people think about him. He has a very sharp tongue and won't hold back his words regardless of who you are as long as he doesn't like you.... more>> The MC is suuuuuper likable.

On the contrary, the ML is just meh. The typical cold, expressionless, overbearing and super capable CEO who is indifferent to everyone except for his family (only a tiny bit) and the MC (pampers him crazily). But what I do really appreciate about him is that even though he's supposed to be overbearing and his jealousy is quite irrational like a lot of ML's, he doesn't control the MC and supports the MC letting him do what he wants and gives him free range, silently watching over him and giving the MC emotional support and advice whenever the MC needs it. He also doesn't just spoils the MC rotten making him useless like other indulgent ML's

I freaking love both their families and I really like how this story has a lot of funny and meaningful interactions between characters other than just the MC and ML. <<less

Recommend to people who love mild exocist story, even at some point the case are dark but it turns out all cool and nice and if you don't mind ML being nothing but decoration

Follow Gu Ye, the orphan, who just sacrified his blood and body in order to save the city from virus outbreak (???) And yet he get the chance to live again in another body and get the family he has never have. Learning how GuYe saving ghost, hunting people (?), making some friends, and get the richest,... more>> handsomest lover.

I kind of like this story a lot more than I expect. Maybe because of the ghost case each satisfied myself how bad guy get what they deserve at the end (?)

Gu family interaction crack me up a lot of time. Madam Gu is one of a kind step mother. Really rare type of step-mother in c-novel, I love her so much.

Kind of nice that we get to now who GuYe really is in the end. So there's some kind of reason why he's so powerful. <<less

I love love this novel, haha. I originally like the supernatural genre and this novel is one.

MC was rebirth to a person with the same name as him after his death when he sacrificed himself to stop a zombie apocalypse. No kidding. Afterwards, with the protection of 3 fathers he uphold justice for the dead and the wronged, lol. Though he's a powerful mystic master as well. What I like is MC friends and families are so cute. ML is also very cute. He's such an awkward pickled potato.

Granted since... more>> it's a mystic story many human darkness was discussed as there were a lot of case but MC himself is such a bubbly person it neutralised a lot of the unpleasantness. He has a tragic past and his rebirth life is full of excitement I feel content by the end of the story.

It's a very good read. I recommend this to Those who likes danmei, mystery, and horror, comedy, and sweet sweet romance.

there's this scene were they confronted an offender in the ghost market and one of MC fan just farted in the middle of such a tense confrontation. I almost died laughing.

I love it! Love it! Love it!

The story is enjoyable to read. MC is very funny and almost in every chapter you have something to laugh about.

I'm a sucker for familial love and doting siblings and the novel didn't let me down. They are so cutteeee. Especially the silly fourth son. His monologue : "eldest brother bully second brother, second brother bully third brother, third brother bully fourth brother, fourth brother shuts up"

Well before this I have read "psychic". They have some similarities in terms of genre and almost know-all-protagonist.... more>> Tbh I enjoyed this one more. <<less

Oh wow this is a piece of art... The MC and all the character interactions are full of life, and the MC’s family is just so heartwarming. Also, not only is there comedy but the stories/arcs are full of depth and meaning. Many of the arcs really lets you reflect on the real world situations we might usually ignore or take for granted.... Each arc makes the karmic relations really clear; planting good seeds (doing good) will result in good results, planting bad seeds (doing harm/bad) will result in bad... more>> results. The author’s writing, plots, and characters are full of meaning and depth!

One of my favorite scenes is when the MC’s previous life’s mother (who had abandoned him) came to find him to take the MC’s previous life’s belongings back with her. (The MC robbed his own grave.... lol) However the MC obviously refused and asked her what relation she has to the deceased and what right does she have to take back his things? However even though he is dead, she still doesn’t dare to admit that he is her son, because if she does she will lose her current position and wealth. Yet at the same time she wants to take his things away to comfort herself that she had once had a son. Disgruntled she slapped the MC. At this time, the MC’s current life’s stepmother (no blood relation) came in, saw the MC being slapped, and went all gung-ho “oh no you didn’t just slap my son” and beat her up one sidedly. It’s just so poignant that one mother is blood related but abandoned her son to die on a mass grave, not daring to admit that he is her son even after he is dead, while another is not blood related but treats him as her own son and is willing to do anything to protect him. Familial love is not determined by blood relations, but by whether the other is truly considered family in their hearts and treated like family. I’m very glad that the author didn’t go with the typical “evil stepmother” cliche.

I love this novel. The chapters are funny though there are also heartbreaking parts. The story of the ghost are sad.

I love the step mother. Of all the bl novels I read with step mother, The step mother here is very likeable. The step brother is also funny and cute.

The MC is funny and OP but it makes sense at the end. ML cant see ghost but he is very caring.

I hope there are extras... like did Sister Hong end up the the ghost general.. what happened to the other... more>> ghost or what happened to the star who fell inlove with MC. Sadly, I cant find any extra.

The translation is great so I still follow it. <<less

so far, I like it. It's the right combination of brash, intelligent MC who wakes up in a new body, action, and creepy ghost stories. There's a lot of the spiritual stuff that doesn't always MTL very well so I stopped and will wait for the translations. Great pick, translator. Please keep up the good work!

A good read. I really like MC's character! He's nice and good at everyone who deserves it. But for those stubborn, annoying, and hateful people, he literally screwed them.

Family relationship? Perfect. I love love love their interactions.

ML? Typical cold/indifferent/ expressionless man who dotes on our MC. But what can I say? I still love them 😂

Also, the cases really show the ugly nature of humans. Aside from the supernatural things, those cases actually happen in real life. Although it feels a bit repetitive at the end, it's still an awesome... more>> read. <<less

I finished MTLing this one and all I can say is that it's really good. The story of the ghosts are also great and sad at the same time. The MC's family is really my favourite because its not the stereotypical Evil Step Mother and Brother. The ML is also really doting and supportive of MC. The side characters are also good.

I have a soft spot for characters like Gu ye.. He doesn't have a overly rigid sense of beleifs, he has own set of principles and he abides by them. He is a warm heart although he might come across as apathetic but that's mostly because he's seen a lot.

That being said, translation makes a big difference. I have read till 20 chapters and I loved it all but when I tried reading further on, I realised the translator had changed. I am not saying the latter did a bad... more>> job but a lot of meaning is lost when a text is translated from chinese to english.

Will read this later at some point. <<less

New translator thank you for picking up this project!!!! The MTL is kinda hard to read since there are so much confusing local words. I laughed so much reading it, I like the brute way of MC, he is so refreshing, his OP-ness towards supernatural thing is really good, I mean, his strength didn't just come from the plot armor of the author, but came from a knowledge acquired from training and learning in Feng Shui and exorcism. ML is also very interesting, his Mary Sue's qualities makes even MC... more>> so dumbfounded, LOL, though ML is actually very sceptical, rationale, and logical person instead of your usual cold overbearing president. <<less

I love it. It's different. I would like to see how it goes before I rate it but for now, I'm loving the MC.

I love romance but this one is definitely going to be my least favourite. The ML is okay but I just don't feel him. I guess I still am a long way from the end but with how much of a personality I'm getting from the ML, I prefer not having one.

The novel is about our sharp-mouth MC who got reborn into a person with the same... more>> name. You know, the same old.

The characters so far are all amazing and I especially love the stepmother. I guess the relationship is a whole lot better with our MC's personality.

His friends, we haven't gotten much of them yet are good, but if I had a friend like MC, we definitely would clash and make up a lot. His mouth is similar to my elder cousin's.

Everything about the novel is good and if I could rate it now it would be a four. I didn't read this novel due to the romance but because of the whole plot itself. I am not disappointed for it not being a great topping for the whole novel but I really don't like this topping for now. <<less

Comedy, supernatural issues and a dash of romance. That's how I would define this novel.

You'll spend half of it laughing, the other half questioning the meaning of life and having little outbursts at the main CP's manner. They have a cute, funny and even endearing dynamic. Their interactions aren't many, and their relationship isn't even the focus here, but you get enough content to find yourself wanting more of their moments.

In terms of characters, I particularly like the protagonist, Gu Ye. He has an extremely amusing manner and a completely... more>> divine mouth, capable of bringing anyone down with a few words. Yu Ze, our ML, unlike the MC, has a much calmer, indifferent and focused manner. It's funny to know that a totally scientific and atheist guy like him has fallen in love with a "ghost hunter/lover". I really like how he went from being totally incredulous to: "Look, since you're here in front of me, I'll believe. But I'll believe it if I'm suspicious!" In a way, I think it's really cute how he even divided his own house into two parts just so Gu Ye's ghosts could have a place to stay. It was a really adorable attitude.

Other than that, the plot was relatively well developed, nothing too incredible or detailed, but good enough to make you feel emerged in the reading and find yourself wanting to know where it all ends up.

And again, the comedy, my God! THE COMEDY!

I just love how unserious this sh*t can be! I really do! I'm particularly drawn to mindless, crack humor – an honorable mention to Gintama here – that seems so idiotic that you have no choice but to like it and end up laughing a lot, just because there's no WAY you won't laugh at least ONCE along the way. I'd easily give this novel five points based on that alone!

As for the secondary characters, I thought they were well done. You can see the relationships developing, forming and strengthening in a way that doesn't feel forced at all. Everyone – here I'm referring to those who interact more with the MC – has been written in such a way that you can feel a certain effort on the part of the author. Especially Gu Ye's friends and some family members.

There's also a nice easter egg near the end, if I'm not mistaken. But it's kind of obvious if you pay attention as you read.

I'd recommend this one to anyone who wants a good laugh or just anyone who likes the supernatural theme, with a bit of romance thrown in. <<less

It's pretty amusing so far! The stepmother is a nice trope subversion of actually defending her stepson and treating him as a son (despite favoring her own son) and the half brother is delightfully dumb. The MC is... quirky to say the least, and the story follows a pretty simple formula of having him encounter supernatural phenomena and solving cases with Taoism.

Got a bit bored of MTL so might come back to this later! It's not really my cup of tea but the characters are quite unique and their interactions... more>> are amusing. Can't give a full review as I'm only about a quarter of the way through. <<less

The novel was quite enjoyable. Though not that deserving of its 4.6 star rating. I'd score it more of a 4.1 - 4.2. Recommended if you like metaphysics novels and a cheeky beautiful protagonist and quality/ humourous family interactions. At the start (trust me the start is one of the best opening chapters out there), I thought I have found another novel for my rec list but alas it didn't quite live up to my expectations.

The entire story is about the MC solving cases. Some take a short while while... more>> others take a little longer. All of them would be solved seamlessly because he's an OP protagonist. But it does get a wee bit tiring reading the same thing further in and the author isn't the best at introducing cases, with some cases coming out of nowhere at times and not introduced as seamlessly. Actually, most of the cases were interesting and one thing I like about the cases is that some of them are morally grey and that they are lessons go learn from them. He also helps both ghosts and people and stands on the side of justice and doesn't interfere if there are no cause and effect involved.

Also, the story follows him from high school to college so it was quite fun. None of the nonsense boring school life part though. There are tons of plot holes and questionable moments but it's still very fun to read. Plot holes include:

- How can people NOT suspect that he has become a different person?

- What's up with Ling Ling and the bead? Is she becoming human? And then what?

- Why does the male lead have such a thick purple aura? What's his past? I totally thought that there was some hidden connection here but....

- How would the family situation be like after their marriage?

- What about the ML's shop and his neighbourhood?

- Will the MC have any apprentice?

- We need updates on the eldest brother's relationship and if the second and third brother have any romance

- The younger Mu brother was such a touch and go character. We need to know more about what happened with him along with his two high school besties!

The ending was very meh but the story makes up for it... I guess.

The best part about the novel is the MCs character. He is flamboyant, playful/cheeky, shameless, infuriating and a little cruel, making the novel funny and fun. The author introduced him in a super fun way which made the start of the novel very entertaining. Along with the MC, the MC's family is also super cute and entertaining with an exaggerated stepmother, a tsundere father, serious elder brother, cunning second brother and silly cute fourth brother.

The side characters are all quite interesting too wells expect the ML. Why are the ML always so boring and similar? Oh wells

Anyways, this is recommended if you're looking for some metaphysics adventures with fun characters and quality familial interactions (and a hint of entertainment industry). <<less
