When Xie Qi was in his senior year of high school, his parents had a car accident, it was hit and run. The sky-high medical bills made Xie Qi breathless, and he seemed to be on the verge of dropping out of school and going to work as a naked male model.

Until one day, when Xie Qi was delivering food to his parents, he went to the wrong ward and was grabbed by a busy nurse to clean the vegetative patient on the hospital bed.

Xie Qi did as he was told, but when he was about to leave, his hand was suddenly grabbed by a vegetative patient. The nurse was shocked and hurriedly called for help.

Even the mother of the vegetative patient rushed to the scene. Seeing this, she immediately wiped away tears and said, “You are the one Yizhi likes, right? No wonder he reacted when he saw you coming.”

Xie Qi: “Auntie, I’m not…”

The other party interrupted, “You will be my daughter-in-law, and I will give you 200,000 pocket money every month, as long as you talk to him every day and stimulate him to wake up.”

Xie Qi: “…”

Xie Qi with a calm face: “Okay, Mom, can you sign the contract?”

After signing the contract, Xie Qi immediately symbolically married his husband who was in a vegetative state.

This romance novel was sweet; especially the extras from Qin Yizhi's POV - his feelings run deep.

Plot: exactly like the summary.

The novel is told mainly from Xie Qi's point of view, and he falls in love after marriage.

Regarding the previous reviewer's impression of the writing style - I think it was intentionally written in simpler vocabulary since the novel is from Xie Qi's perspective, who is still a teenager and is also an unreliable narrator. For instance:

  • Xie Qi is naive and innocent.
    • He likes Qin Yizhi's mom because she cares a lot about her son. He believes she is silly and sweet, and then he thinks she is a bit shrewd because she wins him over with new shoes and wins his mom over with brand name bags. He notices Qin Yizhi is cold to her, but doesn't really understand. It was only somewhere near the end of the novel that he realizes that Yao Wenzhu is obsessed with receiving her son's forgiveness, which was why she pushed them to marry from the start (because she saw pictures of Xie Qi hidden in Qin Yizhi's study and wanted to use Xie Qi to please Qin Yizhi).
      • Spoiler

From the extras, we find out what happened before Qin Yizhi ends up in a car accident: he tries his best to love and pity his mother especially because she was emotionally unstable when his father died - he's been with her at her worst (depressed, suicidal, and bipolar). She became very controlling and attached to him, so he even dropped out of Cambridge without complaint to take over the Qin family business because she wanted him to continue his father's legacy. So, of course Qin Yizhi ends up burnt out, resentful and tired of his pleasing his mother.

        [collapse]
      • Spoiler

I'm also convinced that the mom totally trapped Xie Qi for her son's sake, since she was easily able to investigate the car accident that caused his parents to fall into a coma. LOL However, this thought doesn't occur to Xie Qi, he just thinks Qin Yizhi's mom is very smart sometimes

        [collapse]
    • Qin Yizhi can tell that Xie Qi is stiff around him and unwilling. So he lies to him such as "I'm not interested" and makes up excuses like "a matchmaker predicted that I would live longer if I married you." Xie Qi easily believes him, relaxes around him, doesn't notice he is interested in him, and Xie Qi remains oblivious and dense mostly throughout the beginning of their marriage.
    • Another example of Xie Qi being naive and innocent. So, Qin Yizhi is controlling like his mom sometimes. Xie Qi wanted to go to University T, but that is too far away so Qin Yizhi insisted he aims for University H. Eventually Xie Qi compromised and chose University Z which is close to home. However, Qin Yizhi gives him rules: there is a curfew at 9pm, he must call him everyday, and always tell him where he is going and who he is with. Xie Qi was about to refuse, but Qin Yizhi offers more allowance so Xie Qi is like ok with it. Like... Xie Qi doesn't question that Qin Yizhi's controlling behaviour is a RED FLAG!!
  • Xie Qi lacks some awareness - he forgets the names of people (such as the chef) and even his friends felt insecure in their friendship and just accepts his aloofness. Qin Yizhi gets to know Xie Qi's friends, so I guess it's a green flag (I kind of doubt Qin Yizhi has his own friends LOL)
  • Spoiler

and OF COURSE, Xie Qi even forgot he met Qin Yizhi before LOL

  • Xie Qi is a child forced to grow up due to circumstances and having a somewhat unreliable parent.
    • Spoiler

He was disappointed with his mother and blames her for their current financial situation. He thinks his mother is selfish since she doesn't seem concerned with his well-being and doesn't think about the future. He has this impression, because when she divorced Xie Dai (his bio dad who is a scumbag), she left without taking any of her clothing, jewelry or bags that could have been sold for savings. I understand that Xie Qi felt a bit resentful since his mom wasn't instantly grateful when she woke up from the coma and was instead questioning him where he got the money. On top of that, Xie Qi thought she only married Teacher Hou because he is good at taking care of others (he was the primary cook at home), but he didn't see her calling him or asking about him. Anyways, this is probably a teenager mindset of "my parents don't get me". I kinda sped red the text, so I'm unsure if they ever actually get a moment to talk things out - I hope they do have a moment where their relationship improves. However, I also get that the writer probably wanted to keep her character as a beautiful airhead so that she doesn't interfere with Xie Qi and Qin Yizhi's marriage... yikes

      [collapse]
Overall, I think the story from Xie Qi's voice is charming. Although it may be a slow-burn for some people, I enjoyed it because the characters aren't as shallow as they seemed. Some readers might not approve of this marriage since Xie Qi is 18 and Qin Yizhi is 26. However, Qin Yizhi is less predatory compared to other "tall, rich, handsome" CN novel male leads LOL. In fact, the author does a good job making sure he doesn't cross the line much and remains considerate - he knows Xie Qi is unwilling, and he respects his choice many ways.

  • Well, I can't promise he doesn't try to seduce Xie Qi LOL. In fact, Qin Yizhi was kind of cold towards Xie Qi in the beginning of their relationship and seemed disinterested, which led to Xie Qi letting his guard down. He also demands that he doesn't cheat on him when he goes to university LOL. He insists to never divorce unless he himself is dead.
  • Spoiler

For the majority of the novel he does hold himself back, but at some point he does kiss Xie Qi and lead him to misunderstood "I kissed you to shut you up"...

    [collapse]
  • What won me over: he discussed with Xie Qi to stop visiting him in the hospital and to focus on studying for the University Entry Exams. When they moved in together, he was involved and supportive in Xie Qi's decision on which school to go to, and which program to pursue (which is why Xie Qi sometimes feels like Qin Yizhi is more of a parent than his actual parents LOL). Although he really wanted Xie Qi to stay nearby, he wasn't too pushy when Xie Qi was firm in his choice of school.
  • Of course he's the main financial provider and the powerful one in the relationship. He's generous with gifting money to Xie Qi, he also invests and helps Xie Qi's step-father who woke up from a coma, underwent surgery and went from being a physics teacher to being a businessman.
  • Spoiler

Actually regarding the step-dad, I kind of wondered if he decided to be a businessman because he felt responsible for Xie Qi's self-sacrifice and wanted to provide a way out for him? And also re-attract the mom who was spoiled all her life and ignored him when he was hospitalized?? I skipped a lot of chapters so I kind of missed the development or if the author ever intended to explain his actions. On top of that, he and Xie Qi have communication issues because they are both awkward (usually the mom talks). However, the sweetest moment was when Xie Qi called him dad - that was so sweet!!! He was after all, a true father to Xie Qi

    [collapse]
  • Xie Qi got along with Qin Yizhi through their daily interactions, and Qin Yizhi just couldn't let go of Xie Qi due to his complicated feelings towards him. Some clues that hint Qin Yizhi is attracted to Xie Qi (who remains dense) :
  • Spoiler

Well, I can't really recall if he was almost willing to let Xie Qi get away. Regardless, he pushed for their wedding a week after Xie Qi's college examinations. LOL dude was secretly really excited. There's some other scenes that hinted Qin Yizhi is into Xie Qi but Xie Qi remains oblivious - Xie Qi saw that the bathroom wasn't completely shut and peeked and secretly caught Qin Yizhi touching himself LOL but doesn't think much about it XD. Again, there's a part where Xie Qi is messing around with Qin Yizhi, and Qin Yizhi almost loses control when Xie Qi is all "I'm so ticklish!" cuz then, Qin Yizhi pushes him down - at that moment, Xie Qi felt danger, and told Qin Yizhi to stop so he did.

    [collapse]
And yeah, Qin Yizhi's point of view in the extras won me over. Honestly, just read the extras before reading the spoilers

Spoiler

I totally knew it!!! Qin Yizhi is the "foreigner" that Xie Qi met when he was 14 years old LOL

Qin Yizhi has complicated feelings towards Xie Qi because he is unwilling to let him go and knows Xie Qi doesn't love him, so he works hard (albeit, awkwardly) at making Xie Qi fall in love with him and keeping him by his side. Of course, from Xie Qi's point of view, it isn't super obvious because Qin Yizhi is also new at love LOL

  • He didn't want to scare Xie Qi so he pretended that their marriage was one of convenience and made up lies and excuses (basically hiding the fact that he married him because of love) while insisting that they will never divorce unless he dies unexpectedly LOL
  • Qin Yizhi once ran away to escape the pressure of pleasing his mom and running the family business (because he was also forced to grow up). He is attracted by Xie Qi's peaceful and warm smile, and the sound of his voice. As they kept running into each other in the same city, he wanted to keep in touch (and was willing to give Xie Qi anything - fame, fortune, etc), but Xie Qi who was only 14 years old when they first met, wasn't interested in getting to know him, so he simply forgot about Qin Yizhi.
  • Qin Yizhi never forgot about that summer = "the time we met that summer was so short that I didn't even ask him his name." (LOL what in the Great Gatsby!?)
  • Qin Yizhi is obsessed with the idea of Xie Qi, so when he hears Xie Qi's voice while in a coma:

"Qin Yizhi thought of the famous line in Shakespeare's sonnet - How can I compare you with summer? You are more lovely and gentle than summer. The strong wind will drop the buds of May to the ground, and summer will be too short and pass by in a hurry." - Note: this is the MTL translated version LOL

  • Qin Yizhi was unwilling to let Xie Qi go, so even though he's so young (18 years old...) he proceeds with the marriage because he already likes Xie Qi's qualities - to Qin Yizhi, Xie Qi selflessly spends the money he received from the Qin family to pay for his parents' medical expenses. This made Qin Yizhi yearn for that selfless love - and Qin Yizhi wanted to be the most important person to Xie Qi.
  • Xie Qi was previously worried he's be like his mother (Jiang Sining) and get carried away by the promises of a rich man, however I don't think Qin Yizhi ever had the self-awareness that he was behaving like his mom (Yao Wenzhu), as he is also controlling and obsessed with the love of his life...
  • He becomes a better man for Xie Qi. He thinks of Xie Qi as "his little prince", because of Xie Qi's background (being born noble, and then growing up ordinary due to his mom divorcing his dad). Because he wants to provide Xie Qi with the best of everything, he works hard and projects himself as a reliable and steady man.
  • Huge huge spoiler: I didn't expect it, but there's a paragraph of Qin Yizhi nonchalantly destroying/crippling Yun Yi - scum guy who was also obsessed with Xie Qi from their childhood and wanted to marry him. The author made him a terrible person so that Qin Yizhi was justified in ruining his life, but I think that if Yun Yi was a decent person Qin Yizhi would have found a way to send him abroad LOLOL
    [collapse]
Anyways if you want to read this for the slow romance and for the daily interactions between himself and his husband, it is nice as a slice-of-life (of marrying into wealth LOL). It's slow romance because there's the subtle plot of Xie Qi's coming of age. The fun is reading in between the lines~

I'm not sure if it's because of the original text or the translation (most likely both, maybe with more emphasis on the original work), but it feels like a high schooler's essay. One who's not particularily talented in writing. It somehow manages to be boring even when the subject is (or at least should be) quite interesting/tense. I couldn't read for more than a handful of chapters, so it's possible that it gets better later on, I just don't want to stick around to find out.
