What’s it like to be a camera assistant for a supernatural live-streaming celebrity who makes a career out of death?

Chu Yang answers: Who am I? Where am I?

Chu Yang was just an ordinary hotel room attendant, he never expected that he would be dragged into a world of weirdness and wonder after encountering a narcissistic and dramatic live-streaming celebrity. Ghostly shadows in the hotel, decaying and deformed patients in a hospital, suicidal spirits in a boarding school, the crying of babies in a department store at night and a ghostly deer outside the forest cabin…… had turned his world view upside down. From then on, seeing ghosts and fighting monsters became commonplace, and more often than not he had to face the maddening horror of the unknown.

Cthulhu inspired, also influenced and inspired by Silent Hill, The Shining, Graveyard Encounter, Rick and Morty, Layers of Fear, Biocentri□□□, etc.

The novel and plot was good but I dont think i'll reread it again. Firstly, although the entire plot was very exciting yet mysterious, it has toooo much info dump. Personally, I cant remember alot of things for a long period of time so it was a little disappointing to not understand the plot sometimes. Also, this novel has plenty of chulthu related plots and info that I really dont understand again so it was a little difficult for me to read. I did finish the entire novel but to... more>> be honest i'll give it a 4/5 for the plot. I do love Chu Yang and Lin Ji though. I live how there are many different worlds and in each one, there is a CY and LJ that falls in live with one another. Its very touching but also sad because all of them goes through some not very nice experiences.

So to sum up, it really depends on your personal reading preference. If you like light hearted and fluff related novels then this is not for you. <<less

I just finished this book and all I can say is it was one hell of a ride. I have never written a review on novel updates but I feel like I have to say a few words about this masterpiece. Also, my thoughts are all over the place rn, so sorry if this doesn’t really makes sense.

first, lets start with the plot. I’m a big fan of horror/gore books, especially if its bl. Sadly, there aren’t much horror danmeis out there and i’m in constant search for them. This... more>> novel has just the right amount of action and gore, which is just perfect for me. Honestly, I liked the first half of it better than the second, because in the first few arcs MC and ML just like solving all kinds of "hauntings". The second half was exciting too, but it had a bit too much angst and flashbacks for me. Also, I cried a lot for the main couple and the side characters. But don’t be discouraged by this, this book has the kind of plot that just makes it impossible to put it down.

Now, for the characters. I really liked MC. He has an interesting back story, he’s a good person and he makes a good MC but towards the end of the last arc him and the other hims from other realities get really mixed up. For the Ml, I actually loved him so much. He’s that type of ML who would do absolutely anything for his love. The side characters were fine as well, I had some that I hated with passion and some that I adored.

Spoiler

Also, I don’t know what to think about the romance between Mc’s grandfather and Ml’s dad. It was honestly out of place but they were kinda cute.

[collapse]

I loved the relationship between the main couple. The pacing was just right, and the dynamic was cute. They are literal soulmates who can’t live without each other, if one of them dies the other is bound to go crazy. I shed quite a few tears for these tragic lovers.

Spoiler

For those who are wondering and were frightened by the tragedy tag on nu, it’s HE! At last they got the ending they deserve after so much suffering.

This is my first time to make a review.

It's well made and aaaalloottt of drama. I spent 2 days non-stop, minus the time to eat and sleep to read it from chapter 1 to the end.

And now my eyes are swollen, sore and tired. Too many tears come out also my nose is uncomfortable. o (〒﹏〒) o

... more>> The plot may be predictable (read too many novels, so it's very easy to guess.) but the quality of this novel is so good it made me cry.

On the record there is only a novel finger count that makes me emotional.

And that book became one of the few on the list.

I recommend this and get ready for a lot of drama. Too bad there isn't some nasty scene...

Grotesque descriptions yet fascinating and interesting with the mysteries intertwined within.

The concept of parallel realities was interesting! Idk if it's inspired by other work (s) or not but the author's way of describing and using it in the story was great. What not with the certain mystery of something behind that's moving these realities (or at least the people in it) in a certain direction.

Both main leads are endearing in their own ways. They aren't perfect and has their own secrets but the journey the both of them go through... more>> led the both of them to slowly trust and strengthen each other. And it's definitely enjoyable to read. <<less

This novel hurted me like a b*tch, although it was really nice, the first few chapters hooked me up. I just never expected that the novel would be that tragic, it's worth the tears though.

The novel's settings is cthulhu, love craft, something like that instead of the usual ghosts and hell about. I'm not really into love craft so I can't say about the depth of its genre in the novel. It's an interesting settings though, there's really few novels with settings like this.

The romance, how should I say it,... more>> it's really great, but the plot overshadowed it. Even if I know that the romance is great and well-written, I can't help but think more of the sacrifice and the fast paced plot.

Spoiler

Confession, I low-key liked the romance between Lin Qiao (Lin Qi's father) and Chu Yu (Chu Yang's grandfather).

[collapse]

I'm still feeling a little floaty about the novel, so I really can't write a long review. My mind right now is just: who am I? Where I am? What have I just read? There's too much details that I can't write it in my review.

For the ending, I really love it! It healed all the traumatized places I received from reading the novel, this is a 5/5 for me. I recommend you to read this already if you're still hesitating. Just try it, no harm in doing it! <<less

I would first like to say that this I would not consider this a horror novel at all despite the description. To me, it's more of an action/ mystery with a hint of thriller.

I loved it at first. The world building was amazing and it had the perfect mix of action and mystery.

However, things started going downhill in the latter half of the book. I felt things started to become really repetitive when ... more>>
Spoiler

the different Chu Yangs' and other characters' backstories were introduced. I was already really bored reading about Chu Yang the Devourer's past so when the author then introduced the stories of Chu Yi, the Prophet and Lin Qiao and Chu Yu, I really contemplated dropping this story altogether.

[collapse]

The MTL was also really horrible to read, so I'd recommend waiting for the translator if you have the patience.

By the end of the book, I didn't know what God was doing what or even what they were called.

Spoiler

It didn't help that there were two twin Gods, the God of Order and the God of Chaos respectively, who had really similar names and were behind it all. They were fighting against each other and used the MC, ML and ML's dad as pawns. One of these two Gods (I couldn't tell which one) ended up confronting the MC and ML in the end.

[collapse]

The MC was quite average in my opinion. I've read plenty of protagonists like him; looking normal at first glance but actually ending up really powerful towards the end. The ML was okay, but again nothing memorable.

Spoiler

I felt that this was in part due to all their parallel selves. There were so many of them and all of them had backstories so it all just ended up blurring together.

[collapse]

The plot twists were really predictable in my opinion.

I could guess that
Spoiler

Chu Yang's grandfather's lover was Lin Qi's dad. I also easily guessed that the Prophet was Lin Qi from an altetnate reality.

[collapse]

Overall, a bit of a letdown considering how I binge read the start. I wish the author had focused a bit more on the lore behind each God rather than focusing so much on side characters. It would have also been nice if it was more horror, like the description says; it raised my expectations for nothing. <<less

I've read a couple of these Cthulu inspired novels, though this one had super deep intense worldbuilding, more than the other ones, which I enjoyed a lot.

I would say the first half of this novel was very engrossing - the mystery of the different cults, dimensions, and characters' pasts created a lot of great tension and pacing, as well as the different "cases" that the main characters encountered.

However, I feel that the author might have bit off more than they could chew with some of the later plots. Although everything... more>> made sense and was wrapped up neatly, it was seemed a bit too "vast"

Spoiler

as in the main characters are responsible for mass slaughter and destroying reality as we know it / remaking reality as we know it etc.

Some stories can handle this pretty well, but the issue with this one is that prior to all those heavy hitting "destiny" notes, every single case that the main characters encountered left them barely alive... it just felt like too much drama everywhere with enemies progressively getting stronger nonstop.

Plus the entire concept this novel is built around inevitability. Every struggle / pain / suffering was inevitable and planned out by some higher power and the characters never break out of it.

So you're just left with a weird sense that nobody, not even the gods had any agency (as even the primordial elder gods got destroyed by plan)

[collapse]

Anyway, it's difficult to put my dissatisfaction with the plot to words, but at a certain point, once you've read so much about

Spoiler

the constant death, destruction, and lack of anything good in reality, the final battles become quite numbing and lose their impact to the reader.

It's contrast that typically creates impact, and the characters get progressively more and more cynical, while the worlds get progressively more and more destroyed, there's no real breather, which means once the readers' emotions are exhausted, the final sacrifices have very little impact.

[collapse]

Translation was fantastic.

I highly recommend if you like supernatural / horror-thriller type novels. It's not pure horror of course, but the descriptions are very detailed and vivid, and I enjoyed the different "weird/absurd/bizarre" stuff that happened.

If you like time-travel/multiple reality/battling against higher power stuff - I recommend [Omega Allergy], if you like Cthulu stuff but with more romance/fluff/idealism, I recommend [Daily Disposable Persona]. <<less

This is well written and immersive. The ways it's describe is very easy to imagine. Nothing to complain regarding that overall. I haven't completely read this yet. The translator did a great job. The Mtl is also readable.

I just personally am not a fan of MC's character, the sassiness at the start isn't working for me and usually my first impression last, unfortunately. I'm sure he is gonna have a hidden identity as the key to stop this whole shenanigans but will be revealed towards the end.

This is a very nice. It's really good, but I won't be re-reading in some period time (maybe I'll be back in the future...)

At first, I thought it would be about livestreaming anchors, ghosts, the supernatural, exploring and investigating ghosts thing...

But NOT, its big story, It provides a bigger world.

... more>> FROM THE SYNOPSIS IT WAS CLEAR. But I'm just not careful when reading it hahaa

Sorry for my broken english. The cover gives me the wrong impression at first, the novel is GOOD you can give it try, and This novel has a top notch translator and a superb translation.

Oh, its not fluff, not really sweet either. Sometime annoying, nice, hate, good, for the romance. Not a fan of their father's story. <<less

It's the second time I've came across Cthulhu myth and Cthulhu-based Chinese web novel.

The first-half of the novel is great. Unfortunately, not so much for the second -half. And in my pov, the contrast is palpable.

Let's talk first about the genres. Horror; not so much as it's more gore than horror. It's scientific (?). They have explanations for the ghosts and all beings related. The "sci-fi" and "supernatural" tags are definitely on point. The horror part is around the first third to half only.
Honestly, I think there are a... more>> few tags that can be added...
Spoiler

"tragedy" and "politic" are quite appropriate although they're not the main topic and not particularly the mainstream tragedy with dogblood plot and angst, nor the usual politics among humans.

[collapse]

The first half of the novel is what kept me reading until the end. Those arcs were great, they provided foreshadowing of future plots, the division of power, and characters' backstory.

But.. BUT!! Now I've conflicted feeling about Cthulhu myth.. Those creatures from myth are ridiculously overpowered, which makes sense as they're higher beings. In this novel though, that power is what drives the plot. And as I said before, the 'power' is too OP, very much OP than the most OP MC I've ever read.
So when the truth is unraveled bit by bit, my interest diminished.
Spoiler

--- Very spoilerly ---
Turns out everything is the design of those Gods. The beginning and the end are already predetermined. All those that happens; the deaths, the lives, the deceits, even the romance all were already set in stone since the first reality. Why? Because if there's a bit deviation, with their all-knowing, all powerful and invincible selves, every deviation will be straighten up.
This is very subjective, but I feel like there's no reason for me to read their story because everything is futile, everything already set in stone. What they did, the place they stand on, their emotion, etc. Especially their emotions. It seems like I read the story of AIs with their supposed 'emotions' already programmed. The characters are like puppets, even for some of the divine beings.

[collapse]

Furthermore, the novel take quite many chapters for MC & ML's background stories, which is not bad but imo a bit over.
Spoiler

--- Very spoilerly ---
There are multiple realities, so there're multiple MCs and MLs, in total 4 couples each has their own's stories (in quite details).
Rather than going into too details, I think there're some things that could be explain more clearly, for example the abominable Antonio. Once he's on the side of Chaos, then Order, then actually he's a spy for Chaos in Order (?). Then, one or more sentence about each God would be helpful, especially for first time Cthulhu reader.

It’s so annoying... It’s good thought... Full of drama and also hate and love yeah... it’s drama... anyway... a lot of ups and down and bad lucks but they will try to overcome it and go for true love! And also a lot of psychological troubling things like some deaths and gods name etc... so just prepare yourself when you read it... it is not all sweet!

i shall rate it 5 star!

I’ve read so many novels in the past 7 years and rarely will I find a novel this good. The world building, character and plot development, incorporation of lovecraftian horror, breaching a sensitive time of history without going overboard, all of it was perfected crafted. Reading this was just constant adrenaline rushes over and over, where you know something will happen, it’s right on the precipice, but you don’t know what’s below.

When I was a couple dozen chapters in, I really felt the atmosphere was similar to Falling Into The... more>> Abyss (also quite enjoyed that novel). Consider my surprise when I discovered that not only is it the same author, but even a shared universe! The author mentioned at the end that Haunted Places Live can be considered a prequel, but personally I feel the worlds of the two books are so different that it doesn’t matter.

This isn’t a fluff book and isn’t a typical horror; it isn’t meant to scare you deliberately, but elicit the fear of what’s unknown and greater than what can be comprehended. I think Falling Into The Abyss captures the feeling of hopelessness and despair best, with this book gravitating on tragedy itself. Honestly, I really just adore stories that begin with a small, enclosed feeling of normality but gradually expands and ends on a universal note...
Spoiler

such as novels like ORV, where even the ending reminded me of this book a bit (just not as open-ended feeling as ORV)

[collapse]

The last thing I will touch on is that this book may not be for everyone. It’s psychologically heavy, point blank let’s put it out there. The author, in my opinion, wrote these mental struggles/disorders respectfully, but I will still list out some of the triggers presented in the novel:

  • OCD
  • anxiety
  • panic disorders
  • depression
  • PTSD (specifically regarding war itself and WWII concentration camps)
  • paranoia
  • mental breakdowns/insanity

I truly loved this one and now I'm back to reread it again.

I've started this novel by thinking it would be a ghost haunting type horror novel without too much depth. I wasn't expecting the plot to thicken and be intense this much towards the end. It actually ended up being better than I expected it to be.

It made me cry until my eyes are swollen and I lived for the psychological aspect of this. It showed a realistic example of how someone can struggle with one's mental health.

I particularly... more>> loved the relationship in between main characters. It was good to see them being eachother's emotional support all along. The words they told to eachother, always being eachother's side, I loved what they have no matter what has happened later on. The romance was too subtle and the scenes were way too less than what I usually like but the plot made up for it. I've read it curiously until the end, even if some plot parts were as expected, they were well written in a way to capture readers hearts. The ending also did not disappoint. For some reason since I've read this, I can't get it out of my head as it resonated well with me and will definitely return for a third time in future. Give it a try if you're into necronomicon/lovecraft/junji ito type horrors and drama & tragedies. <<less

First things first, I don't know what I was doing with half of my time before I read this book. It's mind blowing, a masterpiece... Words are insufficient to describe it, and I'm not the best at ululating.

Why the MC and ML and all their different selves in different realities had to suffer so much tore me. The book reminded me that instead of fearing ghosts and spirits, humans are by far the worst and the darkest. But at the same time it gave me hope, that not everyone is... more>> the same. That those who hold you up change you. They give you a different trajectory of life, much more different, than if you had been without them.

However, one thing horribly spoiled the book for me. And it's the seeming hatred of the author against Christianity. Almost everything I read, especially from the middle part till the ending had something negative against Christianity, even going as far to separate Catholicism from Christianity, which is very much absurd. I don't think Catholics identity as Buddhists or Muslims when asked to tick something on religion. I should know. The author should re-read their book to match up the message they were originally trying to pass: that it's not the people, it's the person.

Someone may be raised in the most evil of religions and be the kindest soul to ever exist, and someone could have been raised up in love, and care, wanting and lacking nothing, and yet being as cruel to others as cruelty could get. The author passed that message very much across by severally referencing World War II and the Germans and the Jews. That the German men could be the kindest of husbands, brothers, sons, friends, and neighbors, but when facing the Jews and other minorities in the concentration camps would be worse than the scariest Lovecraftian monster. Beautifully done.

I wonder, but don't dare to think of myself too far, if the author would read this and think about giving people a chance. One more chance, and learning to separate the people from the demographics. I wouldn't hate my Muslim friend because of 9/11. She didn't do it, and she would never do it, at least in this reality with all she had gone through. So I put my trust and faith, to wait, listen, and learn.

Thank you so much, author and most especially to the translator. You brought out the magic in this book, and you're the real hero here. I won't put up any spoiler tags because I don't believe I've spoiled anything. Please read this gem of a book, and if you've gotten this far, thank you too. For existing, being born, and following all the causes and effects to be here. You're important, you're Loved, and you are not a mistake. This world wouldn't be the world it is without you. Trust me. The fact that one more lung breathes in oxygen is a world of impact you don't know.

Stay strong! ❤️ <<less

A story before Falling into the abyss altho u don't need to read this to understand FITA. I had high hopes for this story but it pales in comparison to FITA. If FITA is 5 stars then this will only get 3 or 4 if I'm feeling generous.

MC and ML has characters resemblance to FITA. The seemingly weak but actually powerful, ambiguous past, human but not rlly organism.

The writing is kinda boring. It doesn't pull u into the story. It repeats the ups n downs in life in the same... more>> way. It doesn't managed to make u sympathies w the MC. It's like u already know what will happens next n that kills the excitement.

The first half of the story is good then it's just stagnant.

All in all, it's a good read but will probably not re read this. FITA is a much much better choice than this <<less
