[New review - 4-20-22]

I finished reading it with MTL. I'd say it's over a 3 but not quite a 4. Overall the scenarios were varied in setting, so they were memorable enough for me. I spent the last few days binging the story and feel like I was compensated well enough.

Just a heads up though, if you are looking for a maytr MC who cares for others, saves whoever she can and makes great companions-- this isn't for you. If you are looking for a venemous MC who face slaps... more>> her enemies, leaves them speechless and pays revenge back double-fold-- this also isn't for you. The MC, Lin You, is more of a pragmatic lone wolf MC, who chooses to cut her losses where she can and is pretty cold towards creating interpersonal connections. Names are mentioned, but most are cannon fodder.

As for the writing itself I'd say it's starts off pretty well but devolves into the usual "tell don't show" aka summarizing style that I've experienced in Chinese novels. Kinda immersion breaking TBH, but I feel like there are some great horror scenes depicted here so I'm not too bummed out.

Now that that's out of the way, more detailed thoughts under the cut. Beware of spoilers.

About the CP:

Spoiler

The CP of this story is Lin You and Qi An. Qi An is one of the big bosses of the game. Their relation is actually quite harmonious, just unfortunately a lot of that is developed outside of the written work and there is actually very little romance or tension between them. Romance is not the focus, which in hindsight I think is kinda strange because a lot of problems are resolved exactly because of this romantic relationship, but I digress... Still a bit salty that there's no build up tho. No dramatic kiss, no emotional confession, no passionate happenings, no "who hurt you" filled with simmering rage and cold revenge doled out afterwards... Ha... Beggars can't be choosers I guess.

Anyway, there are quite a few sweet moments between them, and the dynamic is certainly refreshing from the usual cold tyrant archetypes. Qi An is more of the arrogant-but-easily-placated-by-food-and-praise-slash-simp-and-easily-jealous type, while Lin You is the go-with-the-flow-career-woman type. While cute, the balance of power is never really solved and the end kinda glosses it over. Like, there is an amount of respect fostered between the two, but the power balance is SO skewed that it kinda infantilizes it, y'know? Like, she is a slightly powerful player (not the most) who is very resourceful and hardworking-- but he's a frickin GOD who can do what she can with, only an iota of his power.

Ah, idk... Just seems kinda unfair.

About the ending:

Spoiler

Ok, low-key think the author decided to axe it for some reason. Or it may just be their writing style, idk. But the ending was quite abrupt. I thought they could squeeze a few more chapters of content for their last "Ultimate Dungeon" but basically God descends (Qi An), declares "hey this is my girlfriend!" and skips her directly to the mission clear screen... Yeah. It's a bummer.

About Lin You:

Spoiler

Lin You starts off weak and grows strong over time with experience and props. As stated before, Lin You is not a maytr save em all MC. She's a hard working realist (?) who prioritizes her own safety and uses her smarts and efforts to get through her hardships. Unfortunately the author does hand wave away her efforts with the appearance of super-boyfriend every now and then (which is low-key frustrating), but that doesn't take away that she's a strong FMC.

Only problem is she is a bit dull as a MC ngl. Her emotional stability is quite stable, her methods are quite pragmatic, and there's not really a wow factor behind her. No tragic past, no mood swings, no jumps of logic, just a normal girl. While I wouldn't say her situation hasn't messed with her mentality (which is actually explored a bit), it actually decreases the probability of drama and wildness as she becomes more cold and detached instead. Her purpose doesn't really change either, so she is kinda hollow as a character.

About character relationships:

Spoiler

Everyone is cannon fodder. No need to really remember names or organizations, because MC doesn't care about them and ultimately they don't really make a splash in MC's journey. Part of it is she becomes very indifferent towards the survival of the other players stuck with her, and actively chooses to not seek comrades with others because of her experiences. But it's not like she was ever betrayed horribly or anything either-- she just can't care less.

Here is a list of recurring characters that matter (some much more than others) :

Lin You - Protagonist

Qi An - Love interest, third brother of five but second strongest

First brother - Appears occasionally, mainly indifferent

Second Brother - Mentioned occassionally

Fourth brother - Appears occasionally

Fifth Brother - Appears occasionally

System - Appears occassionally

Lin You's parents - Appears occassionally, the only people she actually cares for

Qu Zile - Friendly acquaintances and fellow player, but less friends than you think. Probably more of a casual business relationship, or coworkers.
