Before misery came knocking at the door, no one was more optimistic for a peaceful life than Xiao Lan Dan.

Without power or influence, life unfolded miraculously for the mediocre Princess.

Like a picture scroll coming to life, the capital’s most talented scholar professed his love for her, promising a lifelong commitment and transforming her monotonous existence into a colorful explosion of fireworks.

However, the future she eagerly anticipated never came. Instead, she was met with a bitter end in the midst of an icy winter. She died alone in the heavy snow, bearing the heinous crime of killing her Father Emperor.

Death finally revealed the truth.

Who was the one who smiled with coldness yet carried fiery passions? The one who seemed gentle yet bore grudges? And the one who was willing to abandon love and family for the sake of power?

Although unpredictable, fate had never been senseless. Pure love persevered, while foolishness and heartlessness led to a meaningless existence.

The amount of whitewashing of the ml, the amount of heartbreaking emotion for what you know is bs but can't help how feeling it anyway, the amount of illogical romance progression and storytelling yet addictive " mystery ", and just literally "every bit*h loves the ml".

The leads are unlikeable. The MC is ignorant and dimwitted, but she has a reason to be so. In fact, I find her more and more tolerable as I go on because she is the modern reader's voice. Who of us would be able to... more>> survive like a fish in water with the constant intrigue and ruthlessness? We'd also want to run like SMART PPL. The ML has good points but you can't whitewash him to me (aka think you can make me feel bad for him near the end) with ALL THE mean sh*t HE SAYS TP HER, sh*t HE DOESN'T EXPLAIN RO HER, AND sh*t he does knowingly and unknowingly for other girls. No one in there goddamn right mind would have trusted him for as long as the MC did. She's not a traitor.

Did I still feel heartbroken at times? Yea. But you know what I actually think this book is a tragedy. If you're a female and you read it looking at the options, you'll know what I mean. I think if you love court intrigue drama to the point it doesn't need to make sense as long as it's entertaining, addictive, and makes ya feel something, then yes this is it. But other than that, if you can't stand hypocritical/manipulator ml's or "dumb/weak" MC's, you will have a very hard time. It doesn't necessarily get better, but you do get addicted... so oop. 60 chs end up feeling surprisingly too long.

god. Hell no. This man ain't worth it. If 3 other women are fighting me and the man ain't pushing them with a bulldozer while eagerly explaining to me why he's caught up in this shit, HE'S NOT WORTH IT SIS just my opinion. Obviously good "entertainment" tho. AND HIM BEING "HEARTBROKEN" BC SHE WANTED TO LRAVE HIM. Let me slap u boy. Shut up. You spoiled brat. Do you see what youve been doing??? Also WHY DON'T U EXPLAIN URSELF... of course she's gonna run b*tch!!!!!!!!! U lucky she stayed for your pretty face for so long. He's such an as*hole and a full hypocrite. Literally all the chapters 50+ made me want to drop this to 2 stars bc he is such an as*hole to her. You did not even remotely get hurt as much as she did the whole time. But fine go off, let your concubines feed u. The women in her are treated like such a tragedy. Honestly. I can't take it.

Ok honestly she doesn't deserve this. I dropped this from a 3 to 2. This book from 50-60 officially went overboard. The drama is too extra, too contrived to the point of being so obvious, fake, and unnecessary I want to puke. I'm about to give a 1 star if they keep saying bs: she's the reason he got

hurt. No it was your inattention. Yes she unintentionally distracted u but shut up. I still can't believe this shit. How can ppl blame her for him loving her for so long WHEN HE NEVER TOLD HERRRRRRR AHHHHHH SO ANNOYING

For a 2017 novel, it surprisingly didn't follow the typical revenge trope with the fierce FL doing all the face-slapping. Schemes were orchestrated by ML.

FL is described as mediocre and she truly embodied that adjective all throughout the novel. For a FL that had been betrayed and killed by her beloved, one (who has read a lot of ancient chinese novels) might expect her to come back wrecking revenge but sadly, in real life, a mediocre person couldn't become a genius overnight. But what really endears her to me is that she was self-aware that she could never be match to all these vicious people, and that no matter how many times she came alive, she would never have the heart to be as evil as them. Aww. Well, I can't blame her for her mediocrity. Witnessing how her sister died due to competing with another sister is more than enough for her to convince herself that instead of scheming for favor, being mediocre is much better than being dead. So she contented herself with whatever she has, until came someone (ML's brother) who promised to love her and grow old together with her. Her second sister warned her that it's all a sham, but as an unfavored and ignored princess all her life, her lifelong thirst for attention and love compelled her to ignore the caution.

Unknown to her, she was just being used as a scapegoat.

ML has long been in love with FL, but because FL's evil sister was also in love with him, he couldn't really make a move to save FL in advance, as doing so would lead the FL to a much earlier death. All he could do was wait until the execution and... well, that part was not really explained. One moment, the FL was kneeling waiting for the axe to chop off her head, the next she was inside a gravekeeper's house with her face and body on fire.

Then FL met ML. FL concluded herself that ML also wanted to use her to kill ML's brother, who by then became the new emperor. ML didn't refute, and even said he would really send her to his brother's side to kill him at his signal. He enticed her with his speech of revenge and a promise to give her dead family a proper burial instead of rotting in the mass grave. FL really did want to bury her family in a proper manner, but she was still undecided. Until, she discovered that her family members, whom she thought were executed with her, were alive and enjoying the new emperor's favor, and that they were also part of the conspiracy. Angry, she agreed to ML's revenge plan, but ML said he wanted her to be strong and smart first. So he took her to places she had never been before.

There's some kind of romeo-and-juliet drama towards the latter part of the story, but it was not surprising that it happened heh...

I love the writing style. Overall it's a very captivating and satisfying read. The first 10 chapters gave it straight that ML is not your swoony type of guy, so I wasn't expecting for one. Also I'm pretty sure the tsundere in the tags doesn't refer to the FL lol. Great read for someone like me who's tired of the generic ancient china novels being put out these couple of years. 4++

So I loved this novel, it was a roller coaster of emotions. The beauty of it is the translation/author’s writing that conveys the emotions of the characters in particular the female lead.
As stated in the summary, she is mediocre and plain. You may think, “it’s called Fuzhu’s Ballad which means there will be a journey and growth right?” Yes and no. The novel was a journey for both FL and ML but at the same time the growth is very subtle and only in relation to the feelings between the FL and ML (personal opinion)
I agree with others, the ML is not perfect and there was certainly some actions he took and didn’t take that made angry.
It added to the painful agony of the FL but I believe by the end of the novel it’s clear that they both changed in how they act towards each other.
The novel made me sad multiple times because again, it’s so nicely written and you as a regular person really connected with the MC who is the most regular person in the novel.
If you enjoy reading Deposed Empress General (the closest novel that I could think of to this and even then it’s not even similar, just the angst) then you may enjoy this.
60 chapters I feel was the perfect amount, not too much and not too little either.

Honestly to me, this story is 3 stars- I added the extra star just because of the excellent translation! I do agree with both shortk and mermaidwinter who have given their reviews so I won't rehash what they have mentioned in detail.

It was refreshing to NOT have a female lead do a complete 180 after her imminent execution (something we often see in current asian novels). She does not instantly become smart or cunning enough to lay traps and watch her enemies struggle due to her schemes. As a person, who was neglected and suffered from a serious lack of personal confidence, she was very accurately portrayed- she was naive, not cunning and (till the end) hoping for someone to love her.

My issue with the novel was that the ML was by turns captivated by her, yet when angered, he would always put her down, (calling her out for not learning to be cunning etc) and yet did not do enough to bring her into his confidence or change his teaching style when he took her around to help her "see the world". Sounds realistic but would have been a more engaging read if we saw him help her with her personal growth.

And the FL- as I mentioned before, I don't expect her to suddenly become a master strategist but it would have helped if the author made her at least more street smart! I had hoped that following all that happened to her she would have understood a bit about palace intrigues and with all the schemes going around, she would be able to clearly navigate through at least a few ON HER OWN instead of always messing up and having the ML rescue her. 60 chapters of her only having the self-awareness that she is not as smart, cunning and ruthless as the ML, her evil sis, sis's side kick or the current emperor made the story drag a bit for me.

Secondary characters are well fleshed out and it is for that and the excellent translation that this story rounds up to 4 stars. <<less

I find the MC heartbreaking yet sympathetic. I know she can come off as unlikeable and dumb but honestly she feels real and her behavior is the result of her trauma and neglected childhood. I really enjoyed reading the story despite the MC not being the typical strong, intelligent type that I usually gravitate towards

The plot has the potential to be a good story that can be a page turner but somehow it falls short to my expectation. It felt like whenever there is a "secret" to be uncovered, it was presented in a summary. The details where lost and you will be bombarded with lots of characters names without so much background that it's so hard to recall on who are they. It may be the author style but as I reader I want to be with every character of the story as... more>> I read along, I'll make a guess about what will happen on the plot based on some clues that were dropped from previous chapters but here none, it's seem like there is just a chapter of boomm here's the plot reveal, now you know.

but kudos to a great translation! <<less

I am just in chapter 14 right now but I find this novel very compelling, breezed through the 14 chapters.

But I'm kinda sad right now and I have a feeling this novel will be very depressing. Will pick this up when I'm in a better mood and ready for a roller coaster ride (meanwhile, with this review as a placeholder)

It’s an interesting story. The FL is following the anti-hero path. She is everything a FL should not be. The only reason she survives is because of the Female Lead halo which gaves her the love of the ML. The ML is actually the one driving and supporting the story even though the novel is fully center around the FL thoughts and feelings. The romance is not really one and is not sweet because it’s being told from the FL perspective and also because the ML is really not a... more>> great at romance. Still the originality of the take was great <<less
