Fushi no Kami : Rebuilding Civilization Starts With a Village starts off ok but dulls rather quickly. To summarize, we have our protagonist, Ash, who has memories of his past life in the modern world. Now reincarnated in the boonies of fantasy-esque world fraught with monsters and demons armed with both his past memories and books from an advanced Ancient Civilization, Ash is trying his best to accelerate life out of the Middle Ages. For better or worse, his knowledge makes him stick out like a sore thumb. His bookworm... more>> demeanor leaves him shunned from the rest of the villagers. Deemed a misfit and an oddball, his attempts at modernization are met with cold stares and disbelief... that is until he manages to prove the power of his knowledge. All of a sudden, Ash goes from an illiterate farmer to a genius/messiah as he convinces those around him to join his quest: to resurrect life during the Ancient Civilization.

Off the bat, Fushi no Kami is strikingly similar to many other Isekai novels namely Ascendance of a Bookworm, Release that Witch, and Tensei Shoujo no Rirekisho. It tries to put its own spin on the slice-of-life and kingdom rebuilding genre, but ultimately, the series lacks its own charm and falls flat, failing to stand out on its own.

Each new technological revolution becomes a dull and repetitive cycle : Ash reads a book from the Ancient Civilization -> Ash forms an idea and experiments without compromise -> Ash makes the technology a success and brings it back to the village -> The village's life gets better thus Ash's life gets better -> Ash is praised for being a genius while getting scolded for being reckless -> Repeat.

Although the setting gets bigger and new characters are added, each new arc/chapter follows this template which makes for a boring read. It's sad since the value of these characters and settings are undermined by Ash : excessive praising of his ideas, complaints of how outlandish Ash can be, and long ramblings of the greatness of this and that technology. At it's best, Fushi no Kami is a heartfelt tale of a boy striving for a better life like an Isekai Great Gatbsy, but at it's worse, Fushi no Kami is the story of a gloried saint who's knowledge is really a bunch of half-baked wikipedia searches and random tidbits and facts from the modern highschool education system.

Below are some of my issues with the series :

Spoiler
    • Flat female characters : the deuteragonist, Maika, falls in love with Ash due to a change in his smile. There's nothing major. It just happens. She's goes from hating Ash to becoming his #1 supporter in a couple chapters. Unfortunately, this makes her an extremely flat character as her main function is to act as comedic relief and as a foil to Ash's "genius". What's even worse is that Maika isn't the only female character to be relegated to such a role. In fact, it feels like all other female characters introduced are there to highlight and emphasize Ash's "genius".
    • Inconsistencies in Ash's knowledge : Ash's past and reincarnation is a side-note in this series, but it serves as justification for his advanced ability to read and interpret knowledge from the Ancient Civilization. However, the breath and depth of his knowledge can be extremely jarring at times. Take the following example for instance. Although, possessing knowledge of beekeeping and bee products like honey, it seems unreasonable for Ash to not know about beeswax. This is especially so, when Ash has created many other products such as aloe-based cosmetics and medicine and has claimed to avid reader in his past life, possessing knowledge about biology, chemistry, metallurgy, etc.
    • Really slow world building and technological plot holes : In this world, an Ancient Civilization with modern technologically once existed, but it just collapsed one day. We don't know how, but Ash theorizes about this over the course of the series. As a result of the collapsed Ancient Civilization, there are a lot of anachronisms in this world's technology. We have books containing knowledge about aircrafts, but people still don't practice good hygiene, have soap, or do not know about fertilizer but do know about practicing crop rotations. A lot of this knowledge is locked behind the books from the Ancient Civilization, and only knowledge passed down orally is put into practice outside of the stuff that has been deciphered. Which leads to this series biggest plot-hole, if these books contain the knowledge necessary to revolutionize the world, then why Ash? There is obviously enough motivation and reason to read and interpret these books, and clearly there are plenty of literate people in his world if governments and organizations like the Church exist. Are you telling me that no one could understand them for, no joke, centuries until Ash came along?

So, this is my first review 'cause usually I don't bother to write a review at all. So, it's a first. I've just recently started reading this but so far, I've been really enjoying it. The translation is absolutely beautiful and simple. The story is also really nice and the pace is neither too slow or fast and extremely enjoyable. :)

Coming from the ln

From the other reviews I saw that the 8 years before lacks contexts so.

In the first 8 years he has been suffering in silence. As a kid he can't do much, while knowing how bad their condition really is. Each year seeing kids his age disappear.

... more>> His nice and polite attitude made him liked by the girls and hatred by the boys. Even the fML hated him. Not for anything he did. But for suffering.

Everytime she saw him, she is reminded of pain and suffering and she hates that.

Till one day her mother decided to read a book to the children.

MC included.

From that story MC remembered the feeling of being dived in to a good book, forgetting his pain and hunger even for just a moment.

That was the spark that sets him off his path of rushing civilization. And getting his act together. <<less

Read the light novel. And I have to say this is a gem. First of all the MC. He has a dream something he wants to achieve no matter what and is working hard towards said dream. Not a wimp. Not scared to fight at least not with monsters/animals. No idea yet about humans I would hate it if that was some huge emotional/psychological barrier with nonsensial excuses that japanese authors like to use so much. The main girl. Interesting character not a complete damsel in distress nor an annoying... more>> tsundere or some other cliche-like-tr*sh. Actually works on herself both in academics and physical strength. The romantic aspect of the novel is at least good which is several tiers above most of the other novels. Side characters are not completely mindless dolls and are decently flashed out. Well compared to other japanese/chinese/korean novels but that's what we are reading here. I don't know nor do I care about some plot holes mostly because it kept me entertained enough to ignore them if there were any. About the MC waiting 8 years before having some sort of goal it was actually explained why. Just read further. It's absolutely worth at least trying the light novel has 3 volumes so far with a really decent translation.

Small edit: Finished v3 and he doesn't f*ck around humans either no hesitation. Great MC so far. <<less

I like this novel! It's a slow life novel about a researcher. It's mostly focused on the reincarnator's research efforts as he tries to adapt various ideas from Earth into a pre-industrial society, and unlike many other works IMO it does a pretty good job of mimicking the difficulty such efforts might involve. The romance is slow but generally satisfying (there's even a harem development ~c100 that continues until the end at c177), but overall the novel is first and foremost focused on the world building and research. It's pretty... more>> simple and slow paced, but it knows what it is and executes it well. <<less

Love the story so far. I've been enjoying it a lot. MC's mentality is just about right in most aspects (at least for me).

My only problem is that this story treats reading a book like a miracle. Like you read a simple book from that world and suddenly all their problems are solved. Even though they're their own books and they've had them all along. It's just a bit too childish. I hope it doesn't get too far with this book obsession in the future.

Basing this off the official ln translation but this is a pretty good novel.

If you loved ascendance of a bookworm this is a slightly worse male MC version of that.

The MC is pretty similar but without many of the weaknesses that prevent bookworm from feeling too 'mary sue' and the tech research process is glossed over far more often - but compared to other novels that try to explore the same tropes this is way way better. Basically bookworm with a bit more power fantasy

Isekai reincarnation of an adult being reincarnated as a super smart kid. He starts introducing technology to a primitive world. Tons of stories have already done this and this particular story is rather bland. What sets it apart so far is that the author details the technology and the situation is rather upbeat without being too frivolous. No angst, no terrible suffering, but no ridiculous luck or massive OP nonsense.

This is your typical reincarnation and village improvement story in a medieval world with poor education. As others have noted, the odd thing is that the knowledge for advanced civilization still exists in this world in books, but nobody seems interested in using it until the main character comes along. His not-really-inventions are all very boring, but at least they're better than most novels of this genre where the character feels the need to rant about creating soy sauce and soap.

There are some annoying issues with the characters in this... more>> novel and the main character's selective intelligence.

Spoiler

As said by others, the other characters are very flat. For example, the female lead mostly just blushes and heaps praise in the MC. It's grating that people make 180 character changes as well. For example, the MC's father is a horrible drunk but stops overnight and becomesa decent person.

The bit that annoys me the most: Fairly early on in the story, the village children go into the forest to gather herbs and the main character mysteriously falls unconscious and has to survive in the wilderness alone. Somehow the MC deludes himself into thinking that he tripped without suspecting at all the other boys in the village who were behind him and very obviously hate him. Moreover, you'd think that on getting back to the village and hearing that they told everyone he was attacked by a boar this supposedly smart MC would notice, but nope! The volume ends without any kind of discovery or justice. Moreover, one of the boys that we know was involved in the event, who tries to attack the MC again later btw, suddenly makes a character 180 as well. The MC even fixes this boy's family relationship and gets him a job. The hell.
