I had trouble getting past the first half of the book because the MC was borderline unbearable. I usually adore Musuli's characters -- her MCs and MLs are often brazen, shameless, prideful, dependable, and strong. They're very entertaining and full of colour. But I think her usual formula that worked in QQGK and Heitian fell flat this time because MC has a secret identity.

MC... seems desperate for everyone to find out his real identity. It's probably meant to be hilarious. Most readers definitely found it hilarious. I just find it... more>> deeply annoying.

This is not like... Hua Cheng in TGCF where he was barely pretending to not be a ghost king in front of Xie Lian, because he does want Xie Lian to meet him at his best. Our MC here, however, has actual stakes to care about, but is somehow really sloppy and careless about his disguise.

    • MC's broke enough to worry about his next meal. He's vulnerable and couldn't easily escape if he needed to.
    • MC doesn't know who his enemy is. Who blew him up? Who did gene modification on him? It could literally be anyone around him, but he rather aura-farm than be cautious.
    • He's likely in enemy territory. He inflitrated the law firm that took his case, but walks around like he owns it.
    • He's obnoxiously condescending to everyone including ML, HIS MENTOR. Yes I know he used to be ML's professor but that's no longer the case? How is no one firing this rude intern lmaoo.
    • ML (and... literally every other lawyer) used to know MC and could recognise him. MC constantly going "whoops~ force of habit, but it's never my fault~", like just write your name on your forehead at this point.
Mind you, MC's "habits" aren't behavioural quirks or catchphrases -- y'know, things that he himself might not be aware of? Instead it's stuff like showing off his knowledge about places he shouldn't have been to, alluding to his actual age while supposedly being a fresh graduate, snatching his mentor's job while being an intern, and outright insubordination. The last two absolutely get to me because anyone who's actually been in an actual law firm (or any office in general) knows that MC would have been fired over 10 times. And no, MC wouldn't get awe and admiration from his fellow interns. He'd be ostracised as an insufferable upstart. For the plot to even work, MC required mind-bending patience from every single character around him because he was so obnoxiously terrible at keeping a low profile. BRO YOU'RE ALL ELITE LAWYERS, y'know, experts at catching people in the middle of a lie?? How on earth is everyone so incompetent like AHHHH WHY???

Other miscellaneous thoughts: the plot is fine but I'm not gonna lie, the premise felt rather contrived. It's like you need every character to choose the most troublesome option possible in order to create the perfect storm for a celebrated professor to be "forced" into becoming his student's intern. The pacing is also rather draggy with plenty of scenes that don't really do anything, such as moving the plot or developing their relationship. Also the court cases get glossed over quite a bit -- great if you aren't here for the cases, but I was lol. I definitely still think Musuli is a great writer but I prefer her other works to this. <<less

My third completed novel by Mu Su Li. A very solid author. Here's my 5/5 rating!

And since there are very few reviews for this novel to date, and very little chapters translated so far (aww.. a shame xD), I'll be very generous in providing points and things worth-considering when deciding whether or not to add this to your reading list. I also added some tags for your reference. Personally, I like it very much and certainly recommend reading this.

And with that, wall of text, incoming...

STORY:

Adding to the description provided here in NU, the story takes place in a futuristic interstellar setting, where technology is super high-tech as you would see in many works with sci-fi genre. The story follows the 'adventure' of the protagonist, Yan Suizhi, as he try to unravel the mystery behind his 'death', the gene modification he underwent after the explosion incident without his knowledge, and find clues in cases and events he encounters along the way together with his former student, Gu Yan, while trying to hide and live under his new identity—as Gu Yan's intern. This is a plot-driven storyline packed with thrilling suspense and mystery, comedy, and a chill romance.

Despite having a screaming 200+ chapters, you will not get bored as this is very well-paced, no dragging dogblood drama nor cliché romance tropes just for the fluff and fan-service, as this novel is primarily focusing on the plot's mystery-solving side rather than the romance part. But nevertheless, since it has been already tried and tested by yours truly that the author uses a very 'unconventional' way of scattering sweets and dog food, you'll find every treat very sweet (and hot *with stress*) and rewarding for every tensed and mind-puzzling episodes. Slow but stable and convincing, the love bud blooms naturally until it matures into awkward moments and s*xual tension. And nope, unlike other long novels, this has no several chapter-long backstories, which greatly surprised me too. But expect a few heart-wrenching snippets of some of the characters' tales and background that will make you teary a little and will surely warm your heart.

With sci-fi and interstellar type of setting, despite my first time reading with such genre, I gotta say that I'm very fascinated and impressed with its stable world building and vivid description of the setting. And don't be fooled by the first few chapters as this is not really focused or the overall story will not revolve in repetitive court case episodes despite the misleading title ("The Lawyer" — seriously, personally I find the English title here in NU unappetizing myself xD). I'm telling you in advance, this is not solely about a lawyer and his cold case endeavors! The literal English translation of the title is "First-Class Lawyer"—which is an element part in the plot, and literally a title bestowed to outstanding lawyers in this novel. Please don't be misled. mu*der plot, conspiracy, "secret society"-esc tone, virus infection (nope, not covid-19), human experimentation, and disguises are just some of the significant and intriguing factors you can find in this novel's intricate plot.

Overall, story-wise, I have nothing much to criticize. Everything is just perfect. Every questions are answered, every mysteries are solved splendidly, and conspiracies are revealed one by one in a very climactic way. This is one of those excellent novels I've read to date and a definite worth-rereading in my book list. Maybe only one, I guess... ? But if I say it here, it would become a spoiler. But just a little. It won't affect much to the overall enjoyment pace.

It's about a certain young master surnamed "Manson" and Yan Suizhi's... past. It's not properly 'settled' (jeez, I was really looking forward to it! xD). I bet some readers who have already completed this know what I'm talking about. I was dying to see this young master's reaction once he learned the truth. But to my disappointment, it never happened!

Well, it's not really a big deal but I was expecting a big reveal or something, lol. But I guess I was really low-key hoping for him to be a third wheel, haha.

After reading this novel, I gotta add, I was enlightened how justice system works and how lawyers, especially on the defending side, supposed to perform their duty, and that it's really not all about lying and winning a case. It's about credibility and making sure that their client only receive what they deserved fairly—no more, no less—regardless if they are guilty or not. I guess my conscious bias of bad image of lawyers has been reduced significantly, lol~

CHARACTERS:

This novel comprises a solid and well-fleshed out set of characters something to look forward to, as they help pave the way in solving the mysteries behind the MC's current sorry state of a poor intern in a law firm.

The MC, Yan Suizhi, is (was?) a First-Class Lawyer and a (former?) dean of Maze University Law school (welp, you see he 'died' according to the papers hence...). Anyway, due to some explosion he 'died' and now living the life of an intern as "Ruan Ye", under the supervision of his (now) teacher, Gu Yan, the ML. The ML is described as someone with cold and expressionless face—whenever and wherever, basically someone with perfect poker-face and inborn facial paralysis, who harbors a long time 'ridiculous idea' (a.k.a secret love thoughts) for his 'dead' teacher, the MC.

This two's personality gives me the Wei Wuxian-Lan Wangji pair vibe of Mo Dao Zu Shi, and the only difference of Wei Wuxian with Yan Suizhi is that the MC here is a little more... tamed (lol), and values his "face" very much over any other things regardless if his health is at stake. He's elegant yet stubborn, shameless and playful, good at irritating people while wearing a gentle smile, loves plants but possesses a very poisonous hand thus branded as "God of Death", an 'underground' racer, a self-taught actor, screenwriter, and director of his own inpromptu mini-film. Seriously, one of the best and hilarious scenes here is the MC pulling off a stunt using his flawless and shameless acting skills to slither away from unfavorable situations or to deceive others. Of course with the 'special participation' of the ML—who can't do anything but to go with the flow as the MC is such an unpredictable and quirky character. Maybe one of the most memorable scene for me was the MC's "sophisticated way" of deceiving the enemies right in their faces—a "way" every ML will surely love *cough*. The dynamic of these two is just superb you will find every chapters entertaining, thrilling, and also heart-warming you won't stop flipping every page. I loved how this story not only revolves around the love relationship of the main protagonists, but also subtly tackles a heart-warming story of friendship, father-son relationship, and the unconditional love of one of the side couple.

A sadistic doctor who loves to watch a father and son fight, a faceless hacker friend, a father who loves throwing ashtrays, a self-proclaimed bestfriend of a certain lawyer with a pure heart and loves unconditionally, a pitiful "movie queen" nurse — are just some of the side characters I find memorable in this story. Also, expect some low-profile characters who are actually played a big role behind the scenes that it will leave you with goosebumps and a drawn "oh" along the way.

OVERALL:

A well-structured plot with every elements you would love in a novel worth-rereading.

If only not for the fact that this has a very stingy number of translated chapters, I would definitely re-read it after finishing the bloody MTL journey. I mean, there are lots of awesome and hilarious scenes here I'd like to read over and over again. This is how enjoyable this was. Just like the author's other novel "Global University Entrance Examination", I suggest to refrain from reading any spoilers as this one really revolves around unravelling mysteries so as not to take away the fun of reading as the truth behind the "whos" and the "whys" unfolds. Maybe you could try MTLing this yourself (if you have the guts) as the author's writing style is very smooth, but I strongly suggest to not to rely on only one machine translator to preserve your sanity, and also utilising a good Chinese online dictionary/sentence example is a must for a not-so-bumpy journey. Or better yet, simply wait for this to be fully-translated first before reading (aww.. RIP xD). I dunno if there's any available avenue where we can do some petition or something to get this done as... duh, it's already November, and the latest translated chap was in July! xD

So if you're a fan of sci-fi, mystery, with a touch of comedy, heart-warming tale about friendship, family, and unconditional love, and if you don't mind reading a mild BL romance, try this one out. For hardcore yaoi fans, sorry to say that it has no smut scenes. Intimate moments are depicted in a non-explicit manner, but I personally find it kinda steamy and hot (the author is just so good in this area!). Maybe prepare a glass of water so you won't get dehydrated just in case xD

Finally, this is an excellent story with happy ending. I highly recommend it. <<less

This is one of my favorite novels by Musuli! She's a wonderful writer who never fails in making my heart twinge. The CP dynamics are great as well. Even though Gu Yan appears to dislike Yan Suizhi at first, he actually doesn't! Don't be put off by it. They're actually quite sweet. They're also great people with the soft hearts and firm principles. Love them.

Ah, the familiar poison, the familiar taste.—c47

The prose. The tension. The yearning. The eminent facial paralysis. I don't even want to talk about the plot. I'm too busy losing my mind over this couple.

You know how there are novels that claim to be plot heavy with more inclinations to story rather than romance? Well, I thought this was going to be one of those. More fixated on mystery & storytelling. No. This book ate my soul alive. Maybe it's because it just hits a lot of my sweet spots or... more>> perhaps because the amount of hidden affection & longing is akin to a volcano destroying me in its eruption. I'm writing this after chapter 87 because to tell you the truth, I'm struggling to keep my sanity every chapter. It's too much & just so damn good.

Note: I've read Copper Coins & GUEE. Loved both, but this may take the cake. Props to TL because you did it justice.

It's 3am—the cogs in my mind are in full function. Finished the novel, melted over the weibo extras, bought the novel to support the author. I beg you—support the author if you can.

This is probably my favorite MSL novel. Not that I'm saying I've read all, but I've read more than one for sure! I've gushed enough about the main characters; I think the mental breakdown from earlier made it very clear that I adore the CP. Have to give praise to the side characters as well; they had dimension. Joe & Ke Jin especially have my heart too.

Now the plot, for those wondering if it's even worth the trouble, the answer: yes. If you're the type to love mysteries & enjoy the experience of unraveling secrets as well as learning how to smartly quip back at court... this is probably for you. I'm no lawyer, but god this book made me want to be one... kinda. It's thrilling really. I appreciated the gray areas addressed in this novel, especially those in relation to justice, morals, etc. of that kind. It's a thought-provoking novel. I'm not going to nitpick on the trials themselves. The main point was that I understood the verdicts.

This is a great all-rounder novel. It's packed with a riveting plot, compelling characters, a phenomenal MC, & of course (my favorite part) a delicious romance. I feel lonely after this... gotta wash it down with some cute fluff <<less

I just finished reading the raws and there are honestly... so many good things I can say about this novel (but I'll try to keep it short!). First off, Musuli's a wonderful writer and she somehow manages to write hilariously witty dialogue, heart-fluttering romance as well as deeply moving scenes that made me cry multiple times.

Also, there is so much... warmth to her characters and while none of them are 'perfect', there is also so much kindness and good in them that renews my faith in humanity. Yes, some of... more>> the characters have heart-breaking backstories but their tragedy doesn't define them, and it's their strength in spite of their struggles and their ability to love, to hope, and to believe in the good of others that truly moved me.

A quick list of things I enjoyed:

-Yan Suizhi and Gu Yan's bickering at the beginning was hilarious and Yan Suizhi continues to be hilarious throughout the novel. Comedy aside though, both characters are very mature and intelligent and the way they complemented each other while working together was fantastic.

-One of the most beautiful confession scenes I've ever read!! And plenty of lovely romantic moments afterwards too. While the romance is more like a warm cup of your favourite tea than flashy fireworks, there were still many moments where I had to take a pause just to process how profoundly they loved each other.

-Great plot and pacing - there are so many mysteries and cliffhangers I couldn't stop clicking on the next chapter. A lot of clues and foreshadowing are scattered throughout and the ending ties everything up very neatly. Despite the 'lawyer' in the title, the main characters are more like detectives and the majority of the story takes place outside the courtroom, so the story was anything but boring.

-So many wonderful side characters! It wasn't just the main characters that moved me to tears, Musuli really fleshes out the whole cast and I found myself rooting for all of them (and wishing she would write more about them).

If you're hesitant about starting this because 215 chapters seems daunting, I will be the first to admit that I'm not usually one for slow burn but let me tell you, the wait was SO worth. Highly recommend! <<less

I love the concept of the novel and the characters’ bickering are witty and funny when they jab at each other. The CP development is at a good pace and isn’t rushed like some others that suddenly get together. It’s not about the sexually tension but about them supporting and teasing each other through the issues that arises which I like about this novel.

One thing to note, however, is that if you pay attention to details often then the way the author wrote court trials and cases will irk you.... more>> It is not realistic of what happens in reality such as the trial ending quickly within a day, hard evidence (fingerprints, recordings, etc..) are skimmed and not addressed again somehow in comparison to evidence the MC mentions that’s only enough to bring doubt not actually prove his client’s innocent but somehow does.

Although, the trial scenes are rushed, the author probably wanted to focus on the CP interaction more and make the trials scenes shortened to make it less complicated for readers. Thus, the holes in the trial scenes, but overall it’s a good comedic and warming novel if you want something not as heavy hearted and have a good giggle.

I am currently reading ahead and am at c90 of the raws but I decided to wait for the English translations as it's great!

I'm almost mid story and I really wish the story is more succinct. I wanna give it a 5 stars but it fell short. That is my only criticism so far and it's quite a crippling one. Perhaps I am harsher than normal with my critique as I had high expectations.

I shall not iterate the good since there are so many stellar reviews and instead talk... more>> about the bad.

Whilst on the whole, the plot is fresh and entertaining, I am not a fan of Musuli's draggy pacing for this story. Superfluous descriptions that doesn't add value.

There are numerous instances where certain incidences were written in great detail only for it to go nowhere and never mentioned again.

One such eg, the author spent 1-2 chapt writing about the MC's rental apartment viewing experience in extremely great detail (intro a new character- apartment's owner, complete with his backstory) only for the MC to change his mind and continue staying in ML's house in the following chapter? The rental apartment viewing could definitely be glossed over with a paragraph or two as this detail is inconsequential to the plot thus far.

This isn't a slice of life story afaik... It gives me the impression that the author is pulling things out of her backside to inflate the story's word count.

I duly hope that I am proven wrong in the end and that pacing will pick up in the second half of the story and for the irrelevant details to somehow reappear as crucial plot points. I really want to induct it to my BL 5-stars list. I will be holding on for now as I do genuinely like the character and world setting.

First of all, I am eternally grateful to luckykoi who translated 217 chapters of this amazing novel. As a novice translator myself, I know the amount of blood sweat and tears that the translator must have put into this book. Not to mention the quality of the translation, which is top notch. Kudos!

Now, I'll move to the author. Can I just say I love the versatility of Mu Su Li. Her writings are witty, compelling and thrilling at the same time. Mu Su Li demonstrated her writing prowess once again... more>> in this novel, nothing short of a masterpiece.

First Class Lawyers is perfectly paced, not rushed but also not draggy, despite its 200+ chapters. All the scenes are needed to support the plot, develop the characters, and set the overall mood. If you love clever characters (who doesn't?), you're in for a treat.

As a couple, Yan Suizhi and Gu Yan are a match made in heaven. Green flags everywhere, from both sides. I love reading supportive partnerships, especially ones that feel effortless, just like our first class lawyers.

Overall, this is one of my favourite long novels. My definition of long is anything more than 150 chapters. Be warned though, parts of if will require concentration. Quick skimming won't do. If you are up for a heart-warming brain fitness, this is for you. <<less

My super random theory is that the author had a basic premise: what if a teacher-student relationship is reversed due to some incident? I think the author does well in milking the dynamics of the sudden reversal of the relationship. However, the logic of the incident feels contrived.

Another bone I had to pick (and I am admittedly being very nitpicky here) was the world building. I get that webnovels don't really have a high bar when it comes to creating unique realities and that there are too few chapters to... more>> meaningfully explore the universe they inhabited, but I kept having this persistent feeling of artifice as I was reading, completely taking me out of the fantastical setting. For example:

  • Time. Each planet, it is mentioned, have different rotation periods so why are the characters talking in units of time (days, weeks) as if it was the same everywhere? Moreover, (written) law is very very particular about time. There are always deadlines from filing important documents (specific number of days, months, etc) to statutes of limitations. The time-lessness of the whole thing made me feel like I was floating out in space as the characters flitted about planets.
  • Printing holographic pages. I repeat: printing. Holographic. Pages. I get why, but why?
  • Genetic modification. The use and application of the concept raised a few eyebrows.
Also, I was very hesitant to read this because I am critical about the portrayal of the morality of the law (esp justice) and its actors. As expected, since the protagonists are very competent and "morally correct" lawyers, justice is always served one way or another. However, because of that ending, it didn't give a satisfactory answer to the key dilemma that fractured their relationship in the first place.

The issue of the defense winning case (acquitting the accused) when you, the defense lawyer, are sure that they are the perpetrator. If I am not mistaken, the topic of the defense of the "guilty" is often discussed in ethics classes in law school. Idk about other law schools tho

That said, the overall plot and the writing are very good. There are sufficient foreshadowing and well executed parallelisms. Although I would not categorize the novel mainly in the mystery genre, it was enjoyable following along in guessing the exact details of each case. The author purposefully leaves out the period where the lawyers build their cases, so the court scenes are always very exciting. <<less

To be honest, the title and summary of this novel was a bit off-putting for me. I love mysteries, but I thought The Lawyer was going to be too brainy for me to understand.

I was wrong!

It is so easy to get into, and any legal concepts brought up are explained very well and simply. And the writing is really funny; the main CP's back-and-forth is so hilarious, I can't get enough of it. It's a very welcoming and fun atmosphere for a more intimidating setting, while still gripping you with... more>> its mystery elements. Can't wait for more chapters!! <<less

I know I stop at the very early chapter of the novel, but I have to say, I'm abit disappointed despite everyone saying that this is good.

Looking at the title itself, I was really hoping for intense feeling right at the start with many unanswered mysteries. But, sigh, from the start till now, besides mentioning about MC circumstance, nothing much happen yet. It's just MC being transparent in front of ML. There is no so-called suspense of identity crisis or intense secret reveal.

The way MC infiltrate the law firm using his own signature when he's long 'dead' is really frustrating. It shows how author don't want to think too much and cut everything important short. BECAUSE, think about it, he's long dead, but those interns can get into the firm using the cert signed by the DEAD DEAN. HE'S BEEN DEAD FOR 6 MONTHS!

Ok maybe I'm being really nitpicky right now due to my previous novel that I read, which has solid world building and solid character development.

But really, so far, it's just MC trying to show off his capabilities without even trying to hide. THINK ABOUT IT. He's someone who was killed! And he's a LAWYER! Why is he so careless about his movement especially in front of a close aid, which is ML. He should be very careful and try to judge whether this ML can be trusted or not. After all, his current face is very close to his previous look.

Nothing tells us about the hotel where he died. About who he remembers was there. Friends? Coworkers? A certain hazy person? He didn't do his own personal basic investigation before his infiltration into the firm as intern.

Besides, aside of weak stomach because of gene thingy, there is no trauma shown on MC as a person who died. He died in his sleep, but have author never care whether MC is scared stiff everytime he needs sleep. Such as never to wake up again??

I'm sorry at this rate I'm just ranting, and this is a rant from someone who haven't even reached the plot of the court. But seriously, the starting of the novel is so dull, full of slice of life (which is not what I want from a suspense novel) and bickering of the MC against the rest of the world.

I've read Mu Su Li's novels before, such as GUEE, Mou Mou and Copper Coins, and I LOVED those three novels from the bottom of my heart. So I really have so much expectations on this novel. I was not disappointed even a bit, and it even exceeded my high expectations!!

The plot is really well-paced and the characters, not just the MC and the ML, are fleshed out. I love the perfect balance of law-related cases, romance, drama and humor in this one. Loving the MC and ML... more>> is a given, I'm even unbelievably attached even to the supporting characters. Perfect amount of plot-twists and everything about the plot has perfect sense. The extremely small details that you would think are there just for the sake of it and sometimes also has the posibility that you would overlooked it, but you would suddenly discover a few chapters ahead that it's not just a decoration, but a sprinkle of foreshadowing *chef's kiss*

There are many technical terms but this wouldn't stop you from understanding the cases clearly. The cases that you thought are unrelated, but are actually interconnected with each other, and I'm freaking amazed with how the author handled it! I'm always into badass characters, both physically and intellectually, and clever characters are of course what I'm always looking for. Yan Suizhi (MC) and Gu Yan (ML) are both that kind of character. Their personalities are not bland, they're realistic and I'm very much satisfied it!

I've said this before with my reviews of Mu Su Li's other works, but her writing has this ability to draw me in. The flow of the words, the poetic way of narrating without unnecessary and overly flowery words, the humor. I'm in love with very part of the writing. Of course, kudos to the translator, luckykoi, as well for the wonderful effort of translating this amazing novel. I have no other complain on this novel except for the fact that I wished there's more of it. I would have loved more cases defended by our two First-Class Lawyers.

Seriously, this novel is high up there on my recommendation list. It's very obvious from the 5-star rates from the majority of the reviewers here in NU, but this novel is a gem! Please please please read this novel!! <<less

Entertaining enough, lacks a bit of communication and has story holes. First-class translation.

Story: MC wakes up in a place he doesn't know, alone and genetic modified (like plastic surgery but on a gene level). His only possession a smart device including a fake personality, a paltry amount of money and a oneway ticket off the planet. Checking on his new smart device, MC finds out about his "accidental death" half a year ago, where he was caught in an explosion... but it does seem not so... more>> accidental anymore considering his own "rescue/abduction". Ignoring the well meaning ticket, MC decides to take action and first smuggle under the guise of an intern into the law firm that handled his case.... just to be placed under his former student as a teacher. Not only got the seniority screwed up but their former "bad" relationship as well. It doesn't take ML long to get suspicious and realize who his new intern is. Together they tackle the mess behind MCs case and right decades of unjustice.

MC and ML are the standard outgoing person and face paralyzed ice person. MC is a bit of a Troublemaker, he is liked by everyone but also feared. A smiling tiger character that isn't exactly compatible with his intern disguise. The young intern that isn't like a young intern is basically the comedy factor here.

ML is more of a steadfast personality. He does not speak much but deliveres a lot of "awwwww" moments and romance. He might be a bit cold but people know he is reliable. When he discovers MCs disguise he silently supported him while using the chance to tease him.

The interactions are good, sometimes cute. I have to complain a bit about lacking communication because lots of it is this "like minded ppl think alike" and "we just know what the other means" stuff. While it is packaged nicely and there is real communication in between, I dislike this lazy way of forcing things. But this might only be my opinion and not really fall into your eyes.

What really annoyed me were story holes and occ moments. Especially when they were looking everywhere for a person and basically you already know who that person is. The problem is, that during the whole novel MC/ML will snatch up every minor hint, even grabbing them out of thin air but this one important person which shows so obvious hints and is highlighted by the writer like a sun, somehow went under their radar. That was so f*cking frustrating and took away a lot of joy.

The flow of the story is somewhat strange. It feels like the writer couldn't decide on what their focus is. Sometimes the focus is the lawyers case, where everyday and minute counts and then it switches to the relationship and the case is forgotten for days. The writer seems to try and explain this by the lawsystem of the interstellar but this only makes it worse for me. The pacing feels off.

Everything counting, it was entertaining but feels a bit too long. Reading once is nice but I do not think I will read this another time. I do not dislike this novel but the effect is a one time thing. <<less

At first I was afraid being thrown with the content of a law book, *laugh embarrassedly* ah how silly.

In this book, the MC (Yan Suizhi) mostly works as defence lawyer (technically he is an intern). He (accompanied by ML) works mostly on field, searching for evidences or the lack of it to defend clients from accusation againts them. It felt like those mystery-adventure 'finding object game' which I really like.

There's no debate on desk about which law to use against or something.

Due to Yan Suizhi's personality, the usually-boring interview with... more>> the client also become full of 3T, trick, taunt and threat. The scene on the court also become a fun face-slapping arena instead of a menacing place.

I don't know the adjective but he's the type that make you want to slap him, but can't, either he's right or he's too shameless.

Fortunately he will also be ready with his chicken soup.

Meanwhile, the ML (Gu Yan) feels really cute in comparison. He has the usual common characteristics of a ML, but being a much younger former students he dareth not being too impolite or unrestrained in front of Yan Suizhi.

Oh but it doesn't stop them from bantering.

On the surface, it's like they really say whatever in their mind without filter, not caring the other's feeling or face, but it's actually more joke or teasing than the truth. From their action, we know that they really care for each other (Gu yan is such a Tsundere, ne~?)

Then, when they truly say what they feel, they said it in taunting manner. They're really hopeless.

There are a bit of nice flashback there and there, which giving us the idea about their past and how their relationship back then. I like how this giving a comparison with the current relationship and also a lot of other heartfelt feeling (?). Author put them in nice place.

There are 90 chapters already, but only two cases (court) so far. But this story is not about solving those cases, so it's normal that there are a lot of stories between it, like slice of life story.

This is a story about one first-class lawyer trying to solve the mystery behind his mu*der-attempt, while pretending to be an intern under his former student, who happen to have to solve those small cases in passing.

I love how they only solve cases until it's 'enough' to defend the client. As lawyer aren't police or detective, they can just go home merrily without looking back at the continuation (in case like if another suspect is found and new investigation is needed). It's really suit Yan Suizhi's detached personality under those ever-smiling mask and merry-making surface.

edit: but he's also a bit of tsundere how he pretended to not caring about his clients afterwards, but later on he still get news about them. I mean he did give them chicken soup for the soul too so...

They also doesn't actually genuinely solving cases. They gave a feeling of making analysis first then finding evidences later -- anything works as long as it's to defend the client (ofc not). It gives some sort of moral ambiguity to me (well it's lawyer, what do you expect), but these two protags really do have sense of justice.

Anyway it's really refreshing from detective story.

But, although the cases doesn't feel important to the main mystery, I feelt that many things will be tied later.

Tbh, the love confession is a bit sudden, but at least there are hints that the other began to have feeling... so probably the author just thought to push it since it won't evoke negative reaction from the character. And that already slow burn.

edit: Anyway it's not a fast paced story, you can enjoy this like a slash of mystery and slice-of-life but everything connect in the end.

Unexpectedly really good! I usually would ignore novels with a title like "the lawyer" however it is worth a read!

Despite the main characters being lawyers, the plot is more about mysterys/cases and the development of chemistry between the MC and ML.

MC is actually really funny and a poor actor (when he tries to pretend to be an intern, but literally breaks his role every few minutes). MC is a genius who is a bit eccentric and is quite well known at his law firm.

ML is a typical cold/aloof tsundere character... more>> who cleans up MC's messy act and helps him out alot.

ML is pretty cute, he has a big soft spot for MC, but from MC's perspective, he thinks ML hates him and can barely stand him.

I came for Interstellar mystery, then I got slapped with amazing power couple oh my god Mu Su Li you did it again!!

All character is loveable, especially MC and ML!! Their personality feels so alive and their dynamic is freaking good. I love moments where everyone got rendered speechless by our esteemed Prof Yan BHAHAHAHA.

The plot is so fun, interesting, and easy to follow! I like when readers got to see how the characters mind working when they have to solve a problem.

Guys do you like when the ML is... more>> yearner? THIS IS IT!!! I love how the romance is delivered, watching their progress is so endearing and the little things that ML do to show affections is straight up making me puking up blood. It is THAT good guys...

I love everything about this, and I enjoy every second reading this. Props to translator their works is amazing!!! <<less

This novel was really well written, the characters, the world building, etc. The overarching plot as well as the individual small cases are also enough to keep me hooked daily reading updates. I have to admit, I had to try three times before I could finally read past the first few of chapters because the beginning was hard to get into. It's an interstellar world, but it's good old legal cases/lawyer background with a huge controversy plot in the horizon and honestly I thought I was reading a rebirth for... more>> a couple chapters but it isn't. Yan Suizhi, oh Yan Suizhi. Give me a break.

I’ve taken it as my job to review all of Teacher Mu’s works, as one of the most popular authors on Jinjiang (torpedos thrown everyday) and on Weibo hahaha (weibo stalker.)

All her works were read too early, audio dramas ravished, so I decided to take it as a new year’s resolution to reread her books.

Now I know a few concerns regarding this novel- the romance. Teacher Mu isn’t purely a romance author, but more of her works feature soul-shattering romances right? Compared to those, does this one seem a little lacking?

I absolutely disagree!

Gu Yun may be on the quieter side, but god is he caring. I seriously feel Suizhi would’ve done sh*t without him, this man, how did he even live? It’s a mystery.

hahaha. Jokes aside.

The plot itself is very good. Interstellar, world building feels complete and nothing is lacking in terms of plot progression and wrapping up, typical fashion, these are minimal requirements of our Teacher Mu.

Let’s focus on the court cases, they were extremely exciting to read through. I love how we could go through the whole process without our protagonists, the best part? We’re all of the same mind, the same mind. (Looking at you Suizhi.)

Romance development was realistic and sweet, not too much sugar but perfect to keep our blood sugar healthy and fulfilled.

As for Suizhi, let’s write a book for him, well this is a book for him. He truly is the mvp. He’s impressive, impressive. I’m speechless, just read it yourself.

Anyway, Teacher Mu’s characters are always fun and engaging, they don’t blend too much in the background and aren’t exaggeratedly annoying either. A perfect balance for a realistic and smooth flowing plot. As a side note though. This book has to have one of my most favorite side couples.

I don’t want to spoil! Just read!

Highly recommend! Recommend all of Teacher Mu! Shower her with gifts! <<less

Summary: Put a finger down if you've ever died in your hotel because of a terrorist bombing but you didn't actually die because you were saved by some anonymous person who told you to go to a place but you don't go to that place because you suspect something is off with your death and decide to become an intern at a law firm with your new identity and then you end up being assigned to your past student who used to be your favorite to annoy?

I was worried about... more>> reading this one, not because I thought it would be boring, but because I was worried about second-hand embarrassment? Well, there was no reason to worry because the author of this beautiful novel is Mu Su Li, and if you've ever read any of her other novels then you know her humor is top-tier! Well, at least in my opinion, (humor is pretty subjective)

I had no idea that this was going to be a sci-fi because I forgot the tags, If you're worried It'll be incomprehensible due to the science and lawyer stuff but it's not at all! This has mystery and comedy and a little romance, and honestly, it's just really good. <<less

I'm really speechless. I don't even know how to review this book. It is just too splendid for words.

Yan Suizhi and Gu Yan stole my heart. I enjoyed reading them together. I enjoyed their interactions, past, wit and humour. I loved Yan Suizhi's parents.

The author is just too brilliant. The choice of words, the pacing, the tension, the humor and the fleshing of characters is just too good. The tension is so palpable. The words drag you into their world. The world-building is also consistent. I just adore this... more>> novel.

You come across many novels with the tag "power couple" and I don't think anyone embodies that as much as this. They are just so good together. Their chemistry is off the charts. The way they compensate for each other, ooof. Yan Suizhi does shameless so well. I hate when shameless is done in a s*upid or crass way but Yan Suizhi is classy with it. And I love him even more for that.

The plot doesn't lose out at all. You will be tied down to your chair. I know the heartache I experienced waiting for translations. I adore this book. It is one of my best ever reads. It is dragging with Doppio Senso for my number on this site.

If you are still debating whether to read, please do. Let Yan Suizhi and Gu Yan introduce you to their world. <<less
