TRPG, or Tabletop Role-Playing Game, is characterized by immersive role-playing where players embody their characters. Within the rules, players can steer the story in various open-ended directions, leading to different outcomes.
“Cthulhu Campaign” is a major category within TRPGs. In it, players, as ordinary individuals known as investigators, delve into mysterious events, face unknown mythological creatures, and confront unfathomable fears. A key piece of advice in this realm is that the less you know, the longer you survive.
Liu Xing, driven by curiosity, wanted to join an online Cthulhu campaign but accidentally became part of a real Cthulhu role-playing game…

I like the novel, I found the concept interesting and the use of data to determine actions was new to me in a novel.

Now the negative points, which I don't know if it is in the translation or in the novel, is that after a certain point in the novel the plot becomes fragmented, with plot jumps occurring as if from one chapter to the next, in fact, 3 are missing, after the module of the battle royal, the internet addiction treatment center module occurs in this part of the... more>> novel, basically we only see the beginning and the end, the middle of this module does not exist, chapters 215 and 216 are inaccessible, and the current arc that I am in is The Japanese school module that begins in chapter 248, again presents dark points in the story. <<less

I can see why this only has 3 stars.

The novel's basically the MC playing out certain scenarios with other people and npcs. Everyone has certain stats and during certain actions, there are stat rolls, where a player has to meet a somewhat random amount of a certain stat to succeed or fail. Now onto pros and cons.

Pros:

... more>> +Cthulhu lore background to the scenarios. Not a lot of novels using it.

That's pretty much it, this novel doesn't have any other strengths.

Cons:

-Most annoying one. The novel constantly mentions "foreigners", "europeans", "overseas people" like they're some sort of singular, hostile, and very different entity from them. MC even thinks about "infiltrating" their foreign games. It doesn't even make sense, as within the rules of the game you generally get put in a game together with people speaking your language. Not only that, there is no competition between game players from different nations as the game-reality is a secret only known to the randomly selected players and, at least at the moment of saying that, has no knowable effect on the real world, so this whole "infiltration" would have no meaning (as it doesn't affect the real world either way). Now, obviously, both the nationalistic crap and the meaningless jabs that only make sense with the context of brainwashing are just time wasting nonsense to the non-chinese readers.

-MC is blessed by the god of luck. Every time he gets bailed out by the luck stat or some ridiculous probability succeeding.

-Despite the freedom the scenarios allow, the MC "stays with the group" and follows "the main story" because those are the safety guidelines. This severely restricts the interesting stuff that could actually happen.

-Related to the previous one, a boring main character. Not really generic, but still bland. The side characters somewhat feel like npcs themselves sometimes.

-Lack of action (fights, rituals, etc etc). We only see the results of other people's actions. I would rather follow the story of the wacky guy (a side character and player) who got turned into a ghoul and started sacrificing people, than the one that can only blandly "survive". <<less
