Archean Eon Edge, or the longest epilogue ever and another formulaic IET novel.

What is there to say ? Its not terribly written, definitely competent, but that is about it. It's kind of boring and I wrote Archean Eon Edge because that is what it is, all the way to the end. Lot of build up, and the ruined conclusion, never get satisfaction with it. Every single "problem" comes to a fairly logical conclusion but a boring one, and just because something makes sense, does not make it good writing.

The story... more>> honestly should have been finished when the Archean Eon Realm arc ended, as pretty much everything after is just a long epilogue with no satisfying resolution, with enemies build up just to be brushed aside casually with no real good conflict or resolution. Just watch him train, for nothing to come of it.

This isn't his worst novel, but it is by far the most boring, even the low power level isn't really good, and that is usually his strong point, and then it does what "Seeking the Flying Sword Path" did and just ends suddenly as he reaches a certain high realm, with again lots of build up and promising a larger world, but doesn't deliver. Honestly another example of edging, so again my name for it. The author probably saw the problems writing at that power level would bring, and most likely gave up, but that is honestly his own fault for how bad he set it up. The end is just nothing, trying to wrap up the leftover sh*t in 1-2 chapters, just disappointing. <<less

A book that has its highs and its lows. There is a clear progression from the start of the novel. The conflict expands as Meng Chuan grows in power. The dream of the people is for the millennium old conflict to finally end, pushing people to take risks and sacrifice to try to turn the tide.

This gives clear companions and enemies with a very clear end goal. You have your war buddies that slowly die around you while you keep the hope up. The pressure keeps ramping up as the... more>> novel goes along and it is well thought through, though the secrecy due to being on a war footing can get a big grating.

Spoiler

As we reach the climax of the war and never before seen power levels it becomes a great payout and a nice rounding out of the story. Then it continues for another 200 chapters of gaining power without anything noteworthy happening from a story perspective. He really missed the spot for ending the story and decided to continue to a powerful level and just stop with a variant of they lived happily ever after (for real).

Neither good nor bad, depends on what angle your seeing the novel. Compared to whole bunch of tr*sh out of there this probably the most worthy of your time even good novel out there this still an decent read. Quality of this should but expected when it come to IET, this novel for me at is lower end of the spectrum in his novels. Most of the potential was wasted in this demon invasion thing, every two three chapters there always something like how f*ck everyone is risking there life... more>> to fight the demon. First this gave me attack on titan vibes there is our MC (eren) who's life goal is kill every demon (titan) because his mother was killed by an demon (titan) and there is his childhood sweetheart (misaka) who awakened phenix (akraman) bloodline at the critical moment. This kind of theme doesn't go well with the whole Xuanyuan at least for me where you are running after individual power at least me who like anti-hero, neutral or evil MC, even good MC are okay as long they don't cringe, are smart and most importantly don't sacrifice myself for the others, just take MC from desolate era that kind of good guy I will like.

Overall it an good novel has its flaws, cliches are within acceptable range. You have nothing to read try this. <<less

Its not that different from other cultivation novels in some ways. Its the same progress and growth and fighting increasingly stronger enemies, but it somehow kept my interest throughout. It stands out from other novels in that the protagonist isn't all about casually killing people who mouth off to him, and there aren't an endless stream of willing villains who exist just to be killed. The latter portion of the novel is very slow in comparison to the first part, and no real antagonist shows up, but it is a... more>> satisfying end to the story nonetheless. <<less

Had potential, but there is no stakes. Massive plot armour saving everyone all the time. 1 character should have died multiple times but magically never get's harmed. Good if you've got nothing else to read or waiting for other novels to build chapters.

Great Story. It had some great moments, amazing fights. I liked many of the side characters, IET has improved a lot in this aspect.

It is a bit sad that the last 30 chapter were rushed, some plot threads which were opened never resolved. Some comments are mentioning it is a natural ending and there is not much to write next, considering the power level MC has reached at the end of the novel. I somewhat agree.
But, I still think it could have easily gone for 100-200 chapters more. IET built every character wonderfully, there might not be much action or conflict in those chapters, but I would like to read those just for the character interactions.

It's been a while since I just sat down and read 500+ chapter of a storyline.

But that was the case for this one. Just this enough makes it good story in my book. Like many people pointed out though. At some point this story simply starts rushing towards the ending without anything very impactful happening for about 200 chapters.

As usual IET novel can be divided into arcs. The two main arcs being. First the original world arc, in which we see MC raise up from weakling to the strongest in... more>> his world and then the second MC going on the cultivation journey after leaving his world towards the panicle.

I personally always liked the first part of the IET novels the most since most of the time they are well thought out and written. The cultivation system and battle techniques aren't too abstract allowing IET to write some good fights. The main supporting cast gets decent screen-time and development as well.

So yes the first part of this novel is up to IET standard. If someone read at least one of the IET novels, they know what to expect.

However, I can't say the same for the second. In every aspect the novels struggles to uphold the same standard. Enough said. The story was rushed, the cultivation system was greatly simplified and a lot of stages of cultivation were pretty much time skipped. There was no proper storylines associated with it.

Considering IET standard it was truly let down, especially since I feel like this second part is especially difficult to write for new authors. With the world getting so big, it's easy to get lost so I hoped that IET the experienced author who already wrote this several time would manage to handle it. Instead it's just NOPE.

I didn't necessarily hate the ending itself as while some plot lines were leftover and there was still realms above for which MC could aim for, considering how IET has long since lost passion for this story it was definitely better to just end it there.

Ultimately, this story is definitely worth reading even if just for the first part. Though at the same time, rather than reading this one, I would suggest other IET works instead. As even the first part of this novel wasn't necessarily as good. It's just demon war, demon war and more demon war.

Th biggest highlights of this novel are some emotional bits when MC painted. Whenever those chapters happened it was really just 'WOW!' how did it suddenly get so good. What's more those paintings were usually the conclusion to the mini arcs that just happened. It's really incredible writing right there and unique to this novel. <<less

Dropped, then went to investigate a lil myself. How unsurprising IET.

I could put it all like this, I disliked the less, flying sword path novel, second would be this one, and that's because DE was a huge disappointment. All the rest... are just third, 'cause it's impossible to rate them at all. Why? Because is the exact same novel, and unless you've read his previous novels, you'll feel a huge left-out-like feeling of believing this is a continuation of a previous novel... 'cuz it is... it's not another novel, is... more>> like the ovas of a huge series from an actual decent anime, and the ovas are all... tr*sh. And there is many of them.

Problems not that the are many similarities; problem is, it's the exact same novel, just parallel universe, names, power levels and enemies change, but the rest is basically, one novel and multiple versions of it. Like those otome games where you can date all the girl but gotta go through a different path and you miss the whole rest. But in the same universe or story, so as to speak.

AEA is literally a fake xuanhuan who should've been recognized instead as a xianxia, except the reason for it not being possible is because there is not immortals or sects, or world besides. Exactly like a... wuxia. That's right, this is a camouflaged wuxia novel, the dude (MC) is dying at 120 yo... like seriously. And according to wikia, he is to be 33k yo? Didn't see that anywhere, must've been one of those random'ed paragraphs with vital info at the middle or almost the end.

Wow. Wao, this was just boring.

Cultivation, character development/growth/relations, world building, power levels and progression (to not mention others) :

Are all exactly the same as previous works, and they're just there, blandly, waiting for you the one who masochistically read all previous novels to feel like it's what you wanted because it's the same and the deliver was easy. Ofc, in case you liked them, in which my case was not, in which I just calmly seated for 127 chapters knowing I wouldn't waste MY time on the same old bone.

Guess not for me, I guess. Just not.

Other than that it's super vanilla and no one has a sense of superiority or dark side of humanity unless they're extremely important... to a few episodes. Demons are bad so- sorry, "fiends". Anyways another half-assedly explained racial war and each race with a sense of racism (the real one) after years of nonsensical war.

Have fun. <<less

I've already said it and I'll repeat it: I Eat Tomatoes is one of my favorite Chinese author. I discovered the XianXia genre with his great "Coiling Dragon" and his "Desolate Era" is a work of excellence. As a matter of fact, until recently pretty much all of his novels were clearly above most of the other Chienese fantasy writer. That's why his previous work "Seeking The Flying Sword Path" was such a dispensable letdown, being just good. So let's see if with Archean Eon Art, IET has been able... more>> to go back to his usual greatness.

First the cast. The protagonist is mostly in the mold of the author's, a strong-willed, dedicated and courageous good man. He is also a loving husband and a fine (if sometimes a bit unconventionnal) father and grandfather (again, if you're looking for a h**ny harem horndog, don't bother, IET likes his main character monogamous and faithful, so do I). There are two points that really distinguish this MC from the others of the same author. One, an artistic sense that permeates his whole being, for although Meng Chuan is a saber wielding cultivator, most of his progression is done through his genius as a painter (and unlike in Coiling Dragon where the protagonist stops being liked to his art as a sculptor after the first quarter of the story, here the MC's path as an artist remains relevant until the end). Two, an extreme sense of self sacrifice, as the protagonist's prime motivation is first the protection, then the betterment of his sect, his native world and then his universe (right at the end). Everything passes after this up to and including his loved ones lives and his interest for cultivation. These points build a MC that is less of the classic hero motivated by love/friendship, the depths and innovations of cultivations or being on top of the world, but the best loyal soldier/servant of his world.

The rest of the cast is fine, but as usual with IET, there is a lot of renewal as the protagonist rises in power. The only person nearly constantly by his side is his wife (also a self sacrificing hero, but also a loving and caring paramour, pretty good character). His children (and one of his grandchildren), his best friend and his first true mentor are also very present, as well as the heads of the demons (the antagonists of the novel's first two-third). All the rest of the cast is pretty much functionnal, but with very low depth. In fact, it is one of the story's weak point, as the good guys are very good, the bad guys are very bad and always with pure greed and/or thirst for power for motivation, there's only one "grey" character (the best friend's father) and he mostly stays in the background. Also, there is no true major antagonist in the last third of the novel, as the protagonist mostly fights against himself and time.

The setting is good, but not great. The first two third of the novel take place in the protagonist's world, which is under siege by demonic forces, which mostly results, after the initial discovery, into a constrained feeling as there is almost no true secrets to be discovered (most of the mysteries are progressively declassified to the MC by his mentor as he rises in power), just the war between the two worlds. The last third takes place in the open universe, which offers some true opportunisties for exploration, but still, most of them are left by still living elder powers from the River of Spacetime and are quite under control, so the life-and-death risks feel limited. Only in the last fifth of the tales do we see great opportunities for conflicts and adventures in the other universes and he void between them, but the novel stops right as the main character gets access to this new world.

The power system is pretty well made and original, with the initial stage where the power of the body and the soul are closely related and conditioned by the progresses in technique/Dao, but at the middle stage, cultivation branches in two different directions depending whether a person focuses on the body or the soul, with the techniques still conditionning the progress. A key point brought by this power system is the pressure of time, as there is a age at each level where the chances of breakthrough are at an apex, and once this (relativaly) young age is passed the odds of success quickly go down. This adds a element of urgency and race against time in the novel, which can be tiring at times.

The story itself is, sadly, the down point of the novel. The first part of the tale (two third of it) is the war against the demons and the traitors that help them. The humans are pretty much always on defense, and although there are various plans and counterplans put in place, the story becomes a repeting cycle of cultivation and sieges/rescue, well written, but annoying after a while. The latter part of the tale, which takes place almost entirely into the River of Spacetime universe is better, with a renewed sense of wonder and adventure, but pretty much no epic battle (conflict here seems to be a matter of politics between mostly unseen major player, which the protagonist joins at the very end by the way). It is then mostly a journey of cultivation and observation, with a few small, riskless fights here and there. In fact, most of the best sequences of this part (in the whole novel in fact) are where Meng Chuan improves in his cultivation through his Dao of Painting, for here I Eat Tomatoes shows his true mastery of writing in the description of the piece of art and the felling of the painter (in fact I would love to see renditions of the painting he speaks about). Those scenes almost make me forget about the other two major flaws, the filler, which oscillate between the bothersome and the extremely annoying (some chapter could be cut by a third, even a half ; seriously, you can see when the author was not inspired) and the rushed and abrupt ending, which leaves me thirsty for the wonders beyond the MC's universe.

The translation is at CK Talon level, meaning it is of the best quality you can find on Qidian and in Chinese novel translation in general. He deserves to be paired with China's most famous authors, no contests.

In conclusion, Archean Eon Art is certainly an improvement compaired to the "low" that was Seeking The Flying Sword Path. The characters are alright but a bit uninspired (except the main character who is great though a bit different from IET's usual), the setting is good, the power system is pretty good (although not the best from this author), the translation is excellent but sadly they all serve a story that is well written, but barely above average, handicaped by filler, repetitive plot, lack of trill in the latter part and an abrupt ending, with a good redeeming feature with the great "painting cultivation chapter. My final verdict is a small 7 out of 10. Again, this is better than the last novel, but I know this author can do better when he is more inspired.

P.S: thanks to I Eat Tomatoes for writing this novel and CK Talon for translating it.

P.P.S: In case you wonder, my ranking of IET's novels, from best to worst and with the associated score (out of 10) is: Desolate Era (10) > Coiling Dragon (9) > Stellar Transformation (8) > Lord Xue Ying (8 but high 7 with the bad translation on Qidian) > Archean Eon Art (low 7) > Swallowed Star (6) > Seeking the Flying Sword Path (6, barely) . <<less

I read far longer than I should have, but I guess I kept hoping that the novel would make a turn for the better. That somehow the characters would come alive and the story would live up to its potential. Sadly, however, it got worse as it went along.

I don't want to spoil it, but if you read any of IETs works this one is very similiar. He is great at creating a world with so much potential, but never really develops it. Its like he sucks you in, then... more>> gets bored and moves onto his next project. Or maybe it's not boredom and just the way he conducts business. Well, we all have to pay our bills. <<less

Generally consistent but it gets boring. I personally feel that the humans vs demons arc is unnecessarily slow and long. There is mention of many other realms so why invest 2/3 of the novel in a single realm (I speculate the arc should reach ch. 600+ but I would not know). I think it's a novel that IET fans can get behind but I guess it's not for me. Do give a novel a go and see how you feel about it.

TL;DR: 5/5 for the first 2/3rds of the story, then a 3/5 arc for 50 chaps, a solid 4/5 xianxia for the rest and a standard meh IET ending. overall 4.5/5 (with some asterisks)

So I'm writing this lengthy review cause I really was invested into this story and it's characters, even with it's flaws. I think there was some clear passion in the first 2/3rds of the story. Meng Chuan's passion for martial arts and painting were intoxicating, and his wish to clear the world of demons and life... more>> happily ever after with his wife were so pure. Some moments, like when

Warning: some heavy spoilers from here on out:

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

I really wanted to see the conclusion to his homeworld's war and his reunion with his wife and was actually invested into the characters, and I think IET was too. Don't get me wrong, there were some moments that I think could've been writting better, like certain time skips including the one from him reaching godfiend > great solar realm, but overall it was just a fantastic story. Sadly, after he reached the black hole realm with the motivation from his wife freezing, the story got very meh very quickly. He reached the fifth tribulation realm from the black hole realm in what felt like a fraction of the time chapter-wise it took him to cross one realm before. Him saving the world and un-freezing his wife was also kinda wasted and boring, since he was so overwhelmingly strong compared to everything else in his vicinity. It really felt like IET just got bored.

The pace after that was okay until the end, and there was some interesting story beats, maybe a 4/5 for a xianxia, but nothing compared to the first half. The ending was again really rushed, like all of IET's novels. I don't actually have a problem with him not reaching the final realm in the novel since it was never Meng Chuan's goal, it's moreso the fact that we don't even get a nice conclusion to the current plots. Like we don't get to meet his new master, or 90% of the eight step cultivators, or see him reunite with his old friends, or how the other universes differ.... I could go on and on. This is sadly an issue with all of iet's novels, not just archean eon art, regardless of whether the MC reaches the peak, or the step just below it.

Still, I'd have to rate the novel at least a 4 or 4.5/5, just because of how much I loved the first 2/3rds of the story, even with the lackluster transition arc and okay second part. <<less

Great novel by IET. As a fan of Lord Xue Ying and Desolate Era, I particularly loved the second part of the novel. Doesn't mean that the first part wasn't awesome too.

The conflict between human world and demon world was well detailed and engaging for my part but the end was sadly a bit anti-climatic.

I usually read this author's novels for the focus on Dao Comprehension and even if that wasn't as good as Lord Xue Ying and Desolate Era (a bit too short maybe ?), it was the... more>> best possible with so few chapters. As for the MC, he's essentially a clone of IET's previous works protagonist's so don't except something else. It sounds like a downside but it's not. It's very hard to write a decent protagonist so I usually prefer to read 10 times about the same MC than to have a s*upid, lustful and hypocritical protagonist that will waste a potential good story.

As for the end, it's a bit disappointing but it's still a beautiful opening to his next books.

Globally, I loved the book but I'm still hoping that the author can surpass himself to produce something different next time. <<less
