Once celebrated as a war hero, now a guide bearing scars from past injuries, Kang Hajung.

Just a day before his discharge, Hajung is assigned to guide a new recruit, Kim Moohyuk, who has been rushed into the center.

“…If he doesn’t receive guidance, Kim Moohyuk will die.”

Hajung saved him simply because he couldn’t let him die, but in doing so, he found himself irrevocably tied to Moohyuk, an extraordinarily high-ranking Esper unlike any in history.

His long-awaited retirement slips out of reach, and to make matters worse, he’s designated as the pair guide for the much younger Moohyuk. Then, one day, he’s sent on a mission and meets his end, shot dead.

With a regretful thought of not making it to retirement before his death, he opens his eyes to an unfamiliar reflection—a stranger holding his own cheek, in complete shock.

Thus, Hajung awakens in someone else’s body, five years later, in the center. He soon learns that his original body has already been laid to rest.

Despite the chaos, Hajung quickly revives his long-deferred dream of retirement…

“At this point, I’m getting discharged before anyone finds out.”

The relentless struggle of a guide who dreams only of retiring.

How is there no reviews on this one?!

It's very good. Lots of action and intrigue and pathos!

I usually avoid esper/guide stories because a lot of them seem super unbalanced. The OP Esper coerces the pathetic Guide into a one sided contract and stolkholmes syndromes them into a relationship sort of deal.

This one balances that out in a very surprising way. Age gap, but like with an interesting twist.

Spoiler

The younger ML simps hard, but is unable to get past the superior/apprentice barrier. Until the MC dies and comes back as younger than himself and with a lower rank in a different body. Even after ML figures out it's him though, he still waits for consent. Their swapping of hierarchy actually brings balance to their relationship. They've both had years of experience on the battle field now, gone through excruciating grief, and learned to rely on each other emotionally, even if they still have communication/trust issues.

[collapse]

Anyways, the chapters are pretty long and the plot is bopping.

Do I think there could be better world building? Yes. The author is relying heavily on it being a modern setting without explaining or showing how it's different.

Could the side character be better fleshed out? For sure, but it's not to the point you forget their existance.

Over all like a 4.3 rounded up to 5 stars. <<less

I actually don't agree with the majority that the esper and guide was balance. Although they each have their own functions, it is undeniable that they weren't treated as equals. I was disappointed that the colonel that was highly praised was actually beyond dumb in many situations. Although he is feisty, many times he walked into a lions den without a plan, while bragging in his own narration that he is going to throw hands... I just want to grab him by the collar and tell him that putting yourself... more>> in danger is not a plan. He only meticulously got out of them because ML conveniently happens to be there to save him. I just don't know how he is a seasoned and experienced military official. If this was real world, he wouldn't survive a week.

His "close-friends" are mediocre at best— not once they did anything significant of their own free way to show that they are good friends/characters. I wish we got to see more of what's made them good friends of his.

Spoiler

In the last arc, an incident happened and many guides were killed and everyone in military base was blaming him. His 'good' research friend knew this and still told MC to get lunch from the canteen by himself. Ofcourse the MC was humiliated. Keep in mind this is military setting and his friends are suppose to be in high positions. YOU THING they would have some brains. Also, they never went out of their way to even attempt to investigate his death--some friends they are. ONLY the ML did...

[collapse]

The MARs group came out of no where. Other than them being explained to be strong, there was nothing about them that made them memorable or likeable. How is it that a trained special forces group (best of the best) were like lost as chickens with their heads cut off just cuz their leaders in a comma— does not a single one of them have a braincell except their leader.

It would've been nice if MC in his previous life had a team of his own that way it would show more of his leadership and strong relationships skills with others. Getting moments of combing his team with the MARs for the final show down would've been more impactful.

MC is always contradicting himself too. For example, one moment he was going to seek his ex to get an explanation but when he saw his ex, suddenly he had no interest to listen. He cries over his ex partner for years... all suddenly he doesn't care anymore just cuz he has a love interest now (someone that he literally grew up with) — like hello... ? Also their relationship was so unbalanced. It would've made more sense to give MC the upper hand time-to-time because they had such long/deep relationship BUT nope, the ex just tr*shed him.

Spoiler

He was explained to be a good teacher to many guides. These guides never show up in the story. He also had an opportunity to teach some new B level guides in his new life but nothing came of that. It would've been cute to see him not being able to help himself and end up teaching them. Then in the scenes where everyone was blaming him, these students could've stood up for him and defend his character. If his good friend also put in a few words for him, than it would've feel natural for people to go "oh maybe we were wrong to jump to conclusions, he has so many people defending him."

I'm surprised there's only one review so far. Adding a second one because this novel deserves it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one! It's primarily character focused, with enough intrigue/plot to keep a decent level of tension, but what really got me was the depiction of the MC's struggles with grief, his mental health, and chronic injury/disability. Even after transmigrating to a new body, these things are still treated seriously as things that continue to affect him.

Spoiler

Seeing how much the ML cares for and supports the MC, through tender domesticity and little acts of service, especially during the MC's more serious depressive episodes... it genuinely made me emotional.

(Also, for a guide/esper story, it was nice to see at least some world building that actually addresses some of the toxic aspects typical of the genre in a refreshing way. There's not much, since the author keeps things pretty simple since it's more of a real world setting, but it's still nice to see.) <<less

So I wrote completed but I actually dropped it with 3 extra chaps left cuz it felt unnecessary. My rating is actually 3, accidentally pressed 4

By all means it's a decent story. But perhaps because of the reviews my expectations were too high. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as others. The premise is nice and it had potential. But the pacing was, put nicely, horrendous. 90% of the story was like 4-6 months at most and then the last few chaps skipped 2-6 months at once. Then... more>> there's the extra that just felt like a fanfiction.

About the relationship, I frankly felt like they shouldn't be together. The ml's love for MC is undeniable but

Spoiler

it's a toxic relationship, for both parties. They are not suitable for each other. The MC is too militaristic (understandable) while the ML prefers to either be angry or forget. If you're looking for healthy communications, get out. Their relationship problems are dragged on to even the extras my god. The ML gets angry again and again cuz MC constantly sacrifices himself and then MC says sorry but doesn't really change. It's a cycle. Very realistic.

Then there's the so called character development. There's none tbh. Everything stays the same. Even the problems, the antagonist is still alive, the central is still functioning. They are still in the toxic military. MC still ends up crippled and half dead after a s*upid action (that didn't even work). Just felt pointless.

[collapse]

  1. This is just my feelings tbh. You're free to give it a try.

Thanks to those positive comments, I decided to give this book chance. I'm glad I did it because it amazing. I love how the story started. I loved how Hajung's process his "new" situation and he blend in very well. There was no dragging plot lines and the pace was very good. I'm not good at giving reviews, sorry. Give this book a chance, you will love it.

Not related but, this is the 2nd book I read in 2 days that has an MC that is loved by his friends.... more>> I feel slightly jealous of these friendships. <<less

I honestly have no idea how this can have such a low rating?

For me, this was a very nice read since it suited my tastes perfectly. The premise of "MC dies and is reborn a few years after in someone else's body, ML is drawn to them but don't know why because of the unsettled feeling they had for MC". It's kind of a niche theme but seems to happen in other works. Obviously, there's "MDZS", but also works such as "Monochrome Rumor" and "At the end of the road"... more>> which is one of my favorite works that I discovered early on when I first got into manga and BL. Nowadays, it's all about transmigration, which isn't bad or uninteresting but ending up in another world (especially with a system) somehow makes it feel like there is less at stake if that makes sense and sometimes the ML and side characters end up feeling like mindless NPC's.

Anyways, I scrabbled between reading the beginning of the webtoon version, the novel volumes I could find translated for free, and ended up purchasing the last 3 volumes because I liked it so much.

While some might say the MC is weak or winey, I think it was pretty clear early on what typ of personality he had. Yes, he was an experienced fighter with high military status, but he was not really into the "righteous, saving the world" type of thing, he just waned to retire and live a normal peaceful life. Because of his strong powers he had high responsibilities but it also made him feel burdened and overall his work was very mentally draining and he was just tired. When he plans to finally retire, he's not let go because he's forced to "babysit" some new kid. Even though he's against the idea, he naturally wants to make sure the kid doesn't get killed and he starts feeling responsible for him. While he's forced to work because of the kid, he knows the kid is also forced into this lifestyle because of his promising powers which MC can relate to. But the kid (ML) ends up becoming more dependent on him then he knows and when he d*es he feels like he's done what he can and can finally rest and he has the impression that ML is now strong enough to go on so he doesn't have to worry.

Meanwhile, MC has done his best to hide how much MC's presence comforts him and how distressed his absence makes him, it's something that happens over time so he probably didn't even realize it until much later. Naturally, MC's death crushes ML he falls into despair because of the tragedy in that time was cut way to short. He finds strength and willpower in investigating MC's death and avenge him, while using his own access to the militaries resources to make hidden moves and create a plan. ML is strong, physically and power wise, but he's also emotionally unstable and his powers can get out of his control and become dangerous to himself and others. That's where MC comes in. ML rejects him straight of the bat and MC is shocked at how much ML as changed from the kid he once knew and partially raised.

The plot is good. Not super complicated and deep, but also not the type where things get solved too easily or everything always goes well because it's convenient to not have to explain why things turned out the way they did. I liked both MC and ML a lot as characters, and their relationship development was entertaining to follow.

The fact that everything was all because of: (major spoiler)
Spoiler

MC's ex partner was admittedly not hard to figure out, there weren't any other strong noticeable antagonists that stood out. But the way the story was written, from motive, planning, execution, and so on made a lot of sense. How things unfollowed were also influenced by things he didn't account for and MC and ML's actions both intentionally and unintentionally. Sometimes there's just a bad guy behind it all. It's not the type of ending where the reader has en epiphany, but everything did fall into place nicely imo and there were no confusing lose ends.

[collapse]

The only thing I didn't really like was when:
Spoiler

MC had to enter ML's mind/dreams to calm him down and basically had to pretend to brake in and force himself on him to have s*x. Big ick tbh since they circumstances weren't romantic or very consensual at all. Imo they could've ended with MC helping ML to find himself and reassure him that he (MC) would always stay by his side and end with a confession, but I guess the author decided s*x was necessary. Not really in my taste, but it is what it is.

[collapse]

I really enjoyed MC getting to know ML and who he'd become and follow them as they started to connect with each other. MC asked himself how ML could've turned out this way, but instead of treating him like a fragile thing that just needed a hug he tried to understand him and eventuality learnt to accept him as he was. Because MC's new body was weaker he needed protection and at first ML just kept him close, like holding onto a bag, because it was convenient and he was sure he wouldn't be in danger as long as he was with him. But when he started to connect with MC on a more personal level he eventually found the person he always wanted to protect.

5/5 starts because it was simply a good read all the way through. <<less

I really enjoyed this story since I've read it's manhwa. The MC is an uptight military man and is also kind as a person if not gruff because of his experience in the corrupted military. He was experiencing depression and grief and was one step away from retiring when ML enters the scene. It was frustrating moment I tell you. But ML was such a puppy in those early days and then he grows into having nagging doting thug obsessed personality.... Depends on the person talking.

And it's always hilarious how... more>> OBLIVIOUS our MC is. Everything and all romance gestures are useless as in our MC does not understand his worth as a guide. As he really have only had 2 espers which both are very possesive of him. And he never noticed. He is aware of the possessive nature of espers but his 2 espers never showed him that side of them thus making him feel that is other people's problem. Let me tell you, I think that Moohyuk is already onto him early on as the Colonel, because of that changed behaviour towards the person who harrased him.

Overall this story is more to romance than that on ultimate plot goal. But it does have plot twists that makes it thrilling. Love this story. <<less

I decided to read this after finishing the second season of its manhwa bcs im too impatient to wait for the update. Honestly, the idea is interesting but ngl I was really confused w the motives of most of the characters. Firstly, the novel is genuinely weird bcs wdym a guideverse world without portals or whatsoever? I really don’t understand wht r they fighting for besides the radical group (Accent). The whole concept is wonky bcs essentially, everyone was just fighting w each other for the MC. This is starting... more>> to feel like a rant but anyways, I also hate the fact tht our ML really really hate communicating w the MC. Why did he think that silent treatment was gonna fix anything bro?? The writing was not the greatest too bcs I was lost w all the time skip, just when I was engrossed w the tension and sadness, the MC suddenly was already on the hospital bed every single time. Honestly I don’t even know what to say anymore... the story felt like it was dragging on but nothing was actually resolved in the end <<less

8.7/10, I didn't read the side stories so this whole review is gonna be talking about the main story.

personally, I very much enjoyed this novel. Its been a bit but from what I remember, I for some reason found this novel very emotionally draining. MC and ML both had major struggles mentally and physically and I found it very saddening.

the ML was traumatised and there was a lot rejection in there relationships, especially when the MCs orginal user of the body caused so much problems relating to the ml.... more>> But we see the ML gradually get closer to the MC and it really shows the lvl of the mls love for the MC. ML is a yearner and I love that about him. He yearns for the MC and would do absolutely anything for him. Its very touching seeing him gradually warm up to the MC and their relationship developing.

i thought the antagonists were threatening and actually dangerous. Lots of guidverses have an overpowered esper to take care of things easily but this novel I think both sides were very even, even if ML was very strong, the villains matched his strength just as well as they actually caused danger and damage to the guiding center and both ML and MC.

the highlight of this story is definitely the character development and story telling as its very character based and it heavily relies on the characters for story progression.

the plot isnt as developed but its still enjoyable as it had real stakes in it so very not bad.

overall, I definitely liked this a lot, loved the romance, plot was not bad and 8.7 is my rating for it. <<less

An incredibly enjoyable read. One of the few novel's to make me cry. The writing isn't anything incredible or breathtaking but it's GOOD. The pacing, storytelling, and character building. I cared for what happened to both the MC and ML, and even though the ML was a POS sometimes, I sympathized with him.

So why four stars and not four?

Without giving spoilers, the end is really messy and needlessly dragged out. Otherwise, the read was great.

It's one of the better guideverses out there with a bottom guide and top esper that actually has a story and not just guideverse for the sake of smut. The story is also very interesting and slightly more unique than others, with the added transmigration feature. I would have given this story a 5/5 if not for the very unnecessary side story where

Spoiler

the top r*pes the bottom in the bottom's subconscious because he thought he was a clone. It was made worse because somehow the top's subconscious was also inside that subsconcious reality, so technically he "raped" the bottom in his mind, instead of it just being some manufactured reality. It adds nothing to the story except give the top more guilt (which he really doesn't need; he's suffered enough in the real world).

[collapse]

So main story - 5/5; side story - 1/5 (I would give it a zero if I could lol) <<less
