My initial reaction to this novel was to think that the author was cheating; By intentionally having the protagonist transmigrate into a light novel with a braindead plot filled with nothing but tropey 1-dimensional characters, the author wouldn't have to put any effort into developing a proper plot or writing compelling characters. After all, that's just the way the in-universe novel was written. As I continued reading, however, I began to discard those thoughts. Truly, it must have taken quite a bit of effort to intentionally write the characters as... more>> blandly as this, avoiding with lazer-like precision any traits that might make them unique or interesting. It's like taking a 50 question True/False quiz and ONLY getting the wrong answers. Now, with the understanding that all the characters are supposed to be a parody of JLN tropes, is this series a fun read that interestingly breaks down stereotypes and tropes in modern media? Nah, even if the intention is parody, if you just leave things as they are without any interesting or amusing twists, instead of parody it just becomes a copy.

Whoever parodies crappy novels should see to it that in the process he does not become a crappy novel author. And if you gaze long enough into an cringe, the cringe will gaze back into you. <<less

This MC is... Put simply, f*cking s*upid. His base nature is selfish and cowardly.

He insists that he will stay away and push all the troubles to the protagonist, but at the same time, he does the typical Korean MC thing and sweeps up all the "hidden pieces" and "treasures" and gets involves with all the heroines.

But whenever trouble appears, he expects the protagonist will come swooping in to deal with it, expects the plot to flow like it originally did with zero plans to handle it if it doesnt. For... more>> obvious reasons, it doesn't work out that way, then he spends the rest of his time being an abrasive jerkass to all the girls gathered around him, calling them pawns and useful tools to mitigate the sh*t he stepped in by himself.

In summary, this is basically a story from Park Sihu's POV from "I killed the Academy Player", only this MC doesn't get a status window or any protagonist halo/correction.

Some reviews have mentioned character development, but I'm at chapter 50 and I haven't seen even a hint of that yet.

Edit: chapter 94, quoted verbatim

Spoiler

After everything he's done so far, dude is still acting as if everyrhing should be sticking to the original plot. As a result he gets shafted.

His first thought? "I need to quickly run away, no matter how twisted the adaptation is, this shouldn't have happened."

His second thought? "I need to join those heroines quickly and use them as meat shields."

His third thought? "I take xxxx's trembling hand and calm her down.

It's dangerous for me if my only available tool is in such an unstable condition."

A small light of hope for any character development whatsoever is shining at the end of that chapter, but I'm really not expecting much considering it took over 90 full chapters of him whining, badmouthing and denigrating everyone and everything around him while being a complete chickensh*t coward at the same time.

Hi everyone, Im the translator of Academy's Blacked Haired Foreigner.

Story is about MC being reincarnated into a JP Light novel instead of a web novel like many other KR novels. It contains cliches of both Light Novel and Web Novel (being one itself). MC's abrasive personality compliments the cliches and gives you a good laugh by having a perspective of someone feeling those cliches directly. Having watched lots of anime and reading Mangas and light novels, and afterwards started reading korean novels, I can sympathize with lots of stuff that... more>> MC goes through the story. I think I too would find many of my favourite shounen series cringey now after getting into KR novels.

He might come across as an annoying at first but there's a slow personality development which feels at just right pace for a novel with this many chapters, and it would actually be weird if you welcome being in a novel and adopt to it quickly like MCs in other novels quickly do in a chapter. His only goal is to survive and return to his original world which makes him detached to the novel world, but his interactions with the other characters slowly transform him.

Its a hardcore harem novel with a variety of heroine characters (with great illustrations ofc😜).
Spoiler

Author followed Toika's footsteps

I personally find the interactions with the heroines which annoy him quite funny. This novel has Korean nationalism but it soon gets used as a funny element.

Overall, this is a slow development novel which is worth reading, its huge popularity on Korean platforms and having its own detailed Namu wiki says its worth the try. <<less

So...I kinda wrote this review on impulse because I had nothing better to do so don't expect much out of it. BTW not all 3-star novels are equal so I'd like to clarify this is more a low 3 as opposed to the high 3 I gave Solo Leveling. It could've just as easily been a high 2 if I was in a bad mood.

Pros:

This isn't completely nationalist tr*sh that you'd expect it to be from the first few chapters. Yes, its nationalistic at times, and yes its irritating, but... more>> it won't affect your reading experience too much.

Honestly I expected the author to write the OG protagonist of the Japanese Light Novel as a completely ret*rded arrogant POS but it looks like even this author isn't that shameless.

Cons:

Pretty much everything else

Have you ever read 'I killed the Academy Player' and thought. 'Oh man! I want this but more nationalistic and worse in every way'? Then this novel is for you.

The MC gets power handed to him on a silver platter with no difficulty and very little consequence.

The world tries its hardest to be wacky and uses difficulty classifications such as 'Zeta' or 'Omega' to be different

The garbage setting is explained with 'well the OG Japanese Light novel had a shitty setting and this world is based on that soooooo' <<less

I was quite surprised reading the other review for this story? Do I disagree that it's generic in its setup and characters? No, can't say that. But does it deserve a low to piddling rating? Eh, it's subjective.

This story follows (Name not found), a Korean fan of generic light novel tr*sh. At least he was until it comes out that his favorite novel author was a real as*h*le. Now feeling betrayed and quite mad he makes his mind to burn his collection and harasses the author till he decides to... more>> go to sleep. When he opens his eyes he finds himself in the body of Kim Deok-sun, the only Korean in the novel he used to like that was destined to be petty and die.

The reason I like this story is because the MC is not likeable but also not completely abrasive. He's just entertaining to watch and the story he's in being generic light novel tr*sh means there is always something around the corner that's just dumb fun to read about.

If you don't like the MC you probably won't have a good time but personally I found him quite enjoyable to read about and hope it ends in "the power of friendship to kill god" route. <<less

Well, typical JP light novel about an academy battle. Like literally. Tsundere princess, cool JP beauty with family drama, lesbo heroine with fear of men... if you ever did read ONE of those JP academy battle harem light novel with 21vol or something like that, well you basically read all of them and thus this one too.

The only gimmicks here is that the MC in from KR and also knows he's in one of those novels full of cliches and wants to take advantage of it, but he's not likeable... more>> as a protagonist enough to make it an enjoyable journey for the readers.

Even if is a "parody" of JP light novels and it's making "fun" of them by being self aware... at the end of the day that still makes it a novel full of cliches and cringe troupes but with extra cringe sprinkled on top of it because it tries to be smart about his interior layer of cringe. <<less

This novel is not for everyone of course.... But! Hehe if you like it then you'll like it a lot! And! Don't give up on it just after reading the first few chapters... Persist longer my brethren! You need to read around 60 chapters and after that you can see the character development of the MC and around ch80 it gets so good! So funny haha!

Also, I assume you like harem (as you are here) and this is excellent for harem lovers... I know for sure that it'll have a... more>> great harem ending! <<less

If you can't tel by the cover, the FL is an annoying tsundere, my least favorite type of character. I hate everyone's obsession with them and I was hoping the obvious wouldn't be true, but it was. They should've put a "Tsundere" tag instead of getting my hopes up thinking that blonde bit*h wouldn't be one

Either you like it a lot or you hate it. All characters follow tropes, although they are all three-dimensional contrary to what the negative reviews say. Most of the negative comments are very exaggerated, this work is one of the most unfairly poorly evaluated, in my experience the real rating would be around 3.7 (I've been reading for years...) anyway, experienced readers may like it more than beginners. I'm sure what really irritated the readers was the MC's constant bad mood, but it can't be helped, he's like that and... more>> he stays consistent... the characters are intelligent but they're simple at the same time, I mean their capabilities are high but their personalities are simple... they are based on light novel tropes after all and remain faithful to the character on a deep level... for those who intend to read, I suggest you read about 42 chapters before reaching any conclusion, I realized that low ratings are due to partial taste rather than impartial criticism, don't trust the low rating... <<less

This novel much more than what it looks after first... though that 'first' is kinda long! But anyway... it was a bit frustrating at 'first' but it soon got better, and right now at ch97 I can say that it was a good thing I didn't drop it. It so good! this parody is rated 9+ on naver, so I had some expectations. But after 90 chps I have high expectations from this... hopefully it continues the way it's going at the moment!

This is a great novel that I enjoy, however there is some issues that people may have issues with, mainly with the MC.

The MC comes out mean towards the girls and rude and seems to have stick up is bu*t most of the time. Girls come to like him but he still acts mean towards the people like they are nothing towards him.

Some of you may be turned off by him but dont be. The MC is coming from a place where everything is againsllt him. Imagine you love a... more>> series and the ending was so bad you feel you wasted your life reading or watching it. And he is transfered to this world as a stepping stone for the protaginist.

Another thing is he wants to go home. He has good reasons for wanting to go home
Spoiler

his mother is really sick possibly dying and father is old enough to retire so he wants to support his family

I know I haven't got too far with the story but man this story does not hold back on Caricatures of a typical isekai/fantasy harem-rom Japanese stories and disses them to the extremes in the lens of Mr. Kim who obviously does not like anything from the food cultures of Japanese cuisine to the literary and contemporary devices uses that any typical novel or manga writers of Japanese origin. I gave it the impression that the author which is Korean, attacks vehemently on Japanese manga/novel tropes from Mr. Kim's "headaches... more>> and sighs", while ironically and "hypocritically" uses the very same Japanese tropes that the author vehemently does not like. PoVs of Characters other than Mr. Kim best exemplify this with a hollow individualistic character building that reduces them to "... I love... etc". It was daring and fresh at first, but the constant dissing had me appalled and worry how he sees Japanese manga and novel, nay Japan as whole. <<less

I really think that a lot of the reviewers are missing the point of this novel.

They keep talking about how the characters and settings are a shallow representation of J-LNs while the protagonist/author is a obnoxious Korean.

I think the whole point is "AS INTENDED"

The protagonist is a jilted fan of J-LNs who suddenly has himself transmigrated into such a world. He is forced to live in a universe where everyone is living with these tropes that are absurd. He treats everyone terribly because they are not real people to him.... more>> Because real people do not act like Academy LN protagonists. He also cannot relax because he has a sick mother he cares about - so much of his actions are because he doesn't want to form any attachments until he finds his way back to his world.

That said, his fellow academy students are growing on him. But goodness it's a slow process. We see the irony of him complaining about the tsundere Best girl when he is hypocritically 10 times worse. He is working his way through the plotline of a 20 volume LN and while jumbled it seems to at Vol 4 at this point of the novel. Self-awareness is a long way aways. <<less

My review are not that different with the others who give low stars (2.0 is the biggest I can give to this novel), but I'll give you my thought about the settings. If you going to read it, although the setting is in JP Light Novel, don't expect the world is like JP Light Novel. Just think the setting is in Japan with really basic Japan culture on it and the rest is "completely" Korean culture and settings. I think the author is someone who know Japanese culture just on... more>> the level of tourist, and that's unfortunately not enough for world building JP novel. And so it ends up become just a your regular Korean WN but in Japan. For example, the problem in chapter 2:

Spoiler

In which JP novel the new year representative in entrance ceremony is reading an oath instead of doing normal speech? That's the most Korean things that could happen in entrance ceremony. You won't find something like that in any JP Light Novel.

And also why the one who call the representative is the principal instead of emcee? I'm pretty sure that every Japan school entrance ceremony would have an emcee.

[collapse]

Well that's just the beginning, you'll find a lot more if you read further. Yeah, I got disappointed right at the very beginning of the story though I endure it up until chapter 60+. To me the author using JP Light Novel just as an excuse so he can make a story where when it makes no sense or when it is too convenient for the MC, he can just say "Well, it's a Japanese Light Novel".

My review might a bit harsh but it can't be helped. The setting is in JP Light Novel (the popular one on top of it), so I will judge it with JP Light Novel as a reference. <<less
