Yoshizawa Wakaba’s childhood friend, Umezono Komaki, embodied the concept of “perfection.”

She was well-mannered, intelligent, and excelled in athletics. At least, that was the impression she gave on the surface. In reality, Komaki harbored a nasty personality and frequently looked down on others.

One day, Wakaba and Komaki engage in a competition where their dignity is at stake. Following a defeat, Wakaba has her first kiss taken from her.

In an attempt to reclaim her dignity, Wakaba agrees to a rematch. Winning means regaining her dignity, but losing entails having the things she holds dear gradually stripped away.

As Wakaba loses these meaningful first experiences one by one, she begins to realize that “hatred” is not the only thing she feels about Komaki.

Although the synopsis seems more like the kind you'd see for a smut novel, in actuality, the romance here, is the main focus. Our protagonists, Wakaba and Komaki originally began their relationship as childhood best friends and rivals. Komaki is an exceptionally gifted young girl, whereas Wakaba has always been hard working and persistent, unwilling to give up despite her countless losses, and unwilling to play games where she has a clear advantage. Their relationship dynamic was originally something of a healthy rivalry where both girls would blossom under the... more>> pressure of each other's efforts. However, by the start of chapter 1, both girls had developed a twisted and hatefull relationship due to some painfull past events. In the present, Komaki is still resentfull and angry about the whole thing, meanwhile Wakaba has become apathetic to the point where she just wants to walk away from everything. Yet despite how twisted their relationship has become, somehow, neither of them can trully let go of their attachment to the other. Because even after everything they've been through, Wakaba still can't bear to see Komaki cry, so she finds it difficult to refuse her advances. Even when she goes beyond the limit of her tollerance, she can't manage to stay angry at Komaki because every time she does show her anger, even slightly, the pained look on Komaki's face, melts away all her resentment, leaving her only filled with guilt. On the other hand, Komaki, out of spite and anger, goes out of her way to hurt Wakaba even though every (metaphorical) bullet seems to ricochet back and hit her twice as hard, eventually leaving her unable or unwilling to trully hurt Wakaba anymore. The relationship between these two, frankly seems kind of abusive at the start of the series, but it doesn't stay thay way. Slowly, but surely, things change, and they do so, for the better. Watching how they slowly unravel the threads of the past and clear up old resentment and anguish, fills me with hope. I can't help but smile whenever Wakaba questions why Komaki would have taken certain actions in the past. I can't help but grin when Komaki tries to be honest about her feelings, even though she struggles so much with it. As the series goes on, and more and more of the past and present are revealed, the relationship between these two slowly improves to the point where It really feels earned to watch them finally smile at each other at the end. This series is catharsis personified. In the beggining I felt anxious throughout much of the early chapters. It always seemed like hope was neither close nor far. However, like a light at the end of the tunnel the tone seemed to slowly brighten as the characters got closer and closer. In the end, My heart feels so much warmer after finishing it and I feel a gentle releif as I watch these two come together and aim for a happy end. <<less

This is a good love story, there really isn't anything ecchi about this and I don't mean that as a bad thing.

It's well written and even surprisingly deep, if you have a decent understanding of japanese you could probably read it directly with the help of a translator like I did, go ahead it's a good story.

I really enjoyed the first 1/3 to 1/2 of this story and the introduction and development of Wakaba's character. Her crush and foil, Komaki, however, was written pretty sparsely and there is only 1 POV chapter from her which comes late in the story.

To be honest, the last half of the story came across as pretty melancholic to me, with the reconciliation with Komaki being more like a healing of a broken relationship, rather than a romance. The healing comes largely from from an introspective self-analysis and musing about the... more>> nature of love, rather than from developing an increasing romantic attachment through event progression, like from experiencing trials or going on dates and having shared experiences. I guess the underlying premise is that the main couple were soulmates (but not lovers) and had a falling out before the story begins, and then there is a forgiveness and healing process which we are witness to as readers, instead of some hot and heavy romance being built-up story-wise. But you might have thought that the latter path would be how things would unfold, going by the much more ecchi-filled first half of the story. So I was a bit disappointed from that perspective. Wakaba is still a memorable character but overall I give this a 3-3.5/5 on an overall satisfaction scale. <<less

Not very far in, but I don't like it very much. I'm sure later in the novel the MC will start to understand her feelings, but from what I can see right now, the other character is forcing her feelings onto the MC. I probably will never come back to this, but I'm fairly certain it's a very good novel for those who enjoy stuff like this.

This is really good, and I mean, really good. But holy f*ck, I'm reading the raw, and Wakaba is such an unreliable narrator, to a frustrating degree sometimes.
Spoiler

Like, she desperately masks how she truly feels, even inside her head wether she realizes it or not. Either that or she has this image of Komaki in her head, putting her on a such a high pedestal and thinking that "There's no way someone like her will feel this or do that, she's a goddess afterall", to the point of hurting Komaki, even if she doesn't mean to.

I normally don't write reviews, but I decided to make an exception for this story. I initially read the manga, and with only one chapter out at the time of writing this, switched to the novel soon after. There were only 6 chapters translated as of the time writing this, so I went to the raws. I unfortunately don't speak Japanese, so I used mtl to get the gist of what they were saying and despite the horrible translation I was hooked. I will 100% reread this series whenever it... more>> gets fully translated.

Now for the review. It is a short and sweet story of the messed up relationship between 2 former friends as they struggle to deal with their feelings for one another. The story primarily focuses on wakaba's pov and there is only 1 chapter with komaki's pov. The author doesn't shy away from showing how messed up their relationship initially is. My only main criticism is that due to how short the story is the ending feels rushed. I would've like more time to do introspection on wakaba's feelings and would've liked it if she helped onto her grudge for a bit longer as she delt with her feelings of love vs hate. It's a minor issue and is mainly due to "incident" being 1-3 years ago. Other than that I give it a high rating and recommend it for anyone looking for a short and sweet gay romance <<less
