"A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality" is the only great novel from this author. This novel on the other hand has very boring plots. The story lacks impact and some weird illogical plots. Ex: He met a long time friend while fighting enemies in war. They proceeded to duel right after while their allies gather to watch. Oh ok, nice priority.

The main character has very plain personality, but I don't dislike him, because at least he's a not arrogant or ignorant a**hole. "A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality" is so big in China that he made so much money from it, and from video games based on it. It also has a CGI movie coming in 2019 so I don't think he spent much effort on his other works.

Romance? It's noob trap. On a scale of 1 to 10, how good romance was it? I'd say 2/10. It's very dry. But it's still a happy ending romance. The clam girl was supposed to be important but turned out she's not. The last 3 girls are the first 3 girls.

This is one of those novels I skim through extremely fast because there isn't any important detail that make you pause. You can skip a few chapters and paragraphs and still can keep doing so because they aren't even matter. Demon's Diary is also in the same basket.

Very s*upid MC, s*upider NPCs, even s*upider villains, plots that only happen because everyone is s*upid. Cheat power, plot armor, and plot holes. It is a pretty standard xianxia story so far. There are certainly a lot worse on this site, but this should rank pretty low on your to read list.

Also, the battles are fairly badly written. The author wanted to have them not be won via brute strength but cunning, the problem is that some of the mechanisms he came up with are beyond s*upid. Mainly in the... more>> number of attack shadows and the effects of going slower than max speed.

"My attack speed is so fast I can make 9 sword shadows. I will hold back to trick the opponent and use only 5. Oh no, my opponent used 6! quick, I will ramp up to 6, oh no the opponent ramped up to 7. now its too late to change it! 6 of his cancel 6 of mine, and then his last sword shadow hits me and injures me! But thats ok, because after taking a bunch of injuries I will surprise him by using all 9 sword shadows and he won't be able to respond and die!" - the s*upidity of this just hurts my brain. and this is the standard in almost every battle. (also, all weapons have shadows. staff shadows, spear shadows, etc)

The author also constantly forget numbers. MC was "strong enough to even lift/strike with 500kg" at rank 5, rank 7, rank 9, and several times after breaking into the the 2nd major realm as a "heavenly elephant" body cultivator where he has the strength of multiple "Heavenly Elephants" and is so strong he can "even" lift 500kg! with the strength of multiple heavenly elephants! The author simply forgets that he had the MC be that strong before and just throws 500kg as this massive weight MC manages to lift and super impressive.

The author keeps on making 500kg to be this amazing ridiculous power which it really isn't, there are real humans who can lift 500kg and real life humans that can strike with 500kg force (author says a strike of 500kg but a strike would be 500kgf, "kilogram force"). Actually saying that is multiple "heavenly" elephants is ridiculous.

IRL Asiatic elephants (smaller and weaker than African elephants) are really not built for lifting. A strong male lifts 300 kg with trunk, 500 kg with their mouth, and inputting their charge into a car crash calculator gives me 113, 000 kgf force for them smashing into a wall (assuming they come to a complete stop instead of just flinging the enemy away; if they don't then not all the energy is discharged into the strike. This applies to human punches too, hence "roll with the punches" is a thing). So having "strength of multiple heavenly elephants" strike with a pathetic 500 kgf is just sad.

Author also constantly forgets his money. MC enters the sect carrying 2.5 million silver notes he looted from a houtien (2nd major realm) expert he killed and took the entire life savings of (plus his own sizeable savings)... he then "has a great expenses! spending 70 thousand silver notes a week", after 3 weeks all his money is gone... He only spent 210 thousand not 2.5 million, but the author simply didn't bother taking note of how much money he had. This keeps on happening again and again.

XianXiaWorld translation was awful to the point where I don't even recommend reading it. Qidian (webnovel) translation is much better barring the occasional mistake, so at least it is readable now that they picked it up. <<less

So far (as of CH 56) the story has been quite good. The MC is a martial artist at art and wants to pursue greater strength. Stands at least shoulder to shoulder with the other novel the author wrote ‘record of a mortals journey and demon diary’

Maybe earlier translations were not good, but at the time I read the quality was good (thanks to editor). Story so far is really good chapters 1-41. The MC has good morals, not the cold hearted mu*derer or r*per. The story has an interesting plot, has romance.

Pros: Good story, pretty fast translations (5 chaps a week?), likeable MC.

Cons: The web sites page doesn't have paddings on the body of text, causes eye strain. Also no reader mode. Please consider mobile readers.

Story is good, but to compete with big sites need... more>> faster releases like couple of chapters a day. <<less

This novel isn't all bad, but the problem is that the author can neither do math properly or follow logical reasoning. He regularly manages to forget what he wrote a paragraph later only to logically contradict himself. Just look at the first two oaths he swore, which are supposed to have major ramifications for the entire plot. He swore an oath in front of his dead mothers grave to leave and become the strongest martial artist. While she yet lived she and he were abandoned by their father so that... more>> he could become a strong martial artist. How the hell does this make sense. That's like promising revenge for r*pe by raping the victim again. WTF. Then, out of nowhere, he meets a pretty girl in the woods. This girl is in the process of stealing the most precious item he has ever owned, a golden holy hamster. He immediately forgives her and then proposes to her and then tells her he will take her like a brute and make her his possession. His vow to heaven is literally that should he die without marrying her that he should be killed by the heavens. The author has the MC say this unashamedly as if it wasn't totally f*cktarded. Apparently the MC believes you can be killed twice. So not only is the MC a pu*sy that will lose his mind and sell his kidneys the second a pretty girl comes around, he's dumb as a box of rocks. In one instance of being a s*upid pu*sy a young master destroys his property and humiliates him and he just stands there. Then the young master tries to kill him with a sword art. The MC just slaps him twice and lets him off. The guy tries to kill him with a canon. The MC slaps him once and let's him off a third time. The guy tries to kill him with a sneak attack and the author has to perform a miracle to save him from getting stabbed in the heart. The young master vows to mu*der him. The MC just kicks him, intending to let the guy go, but the young master accidentally trips onto a sword and dies. The MC is like a PG rated Disney character that was dropped into the middle of a Chinese xianxia novel. He is so Disney that when he fights with knives he never actually cuts anybody. What the hell is the point of having knives then? In my opinion, worst of all, is the peanut gallery. Sometimes whole chapters are random people gossiping about either how the MC is tr*sh or the MC is divine. The author will flip all the MC's "friends" like a switch making them abandon the MC simply because they heard the rumor that he is tr*sh. Then the MC will mope around for a while until a miracle is dispensed from the author that allows the MC to become divine again and prove all the gossipers wrong. Then the MC will go back to being tr*sh. The truth is the MC is tr*sh and all the divinity is plot armor that has wrapped up a turd of a character. You can pour perfume on a turd all you want. It's still a turd. <<less

Very generic novel, even for something written in 2015.
- Many key elements borrowed from predecessor wuxia novels, from an older woman/teacher/wife (Legend of Condor Heroes?) to a protagonist being thrown into survival-of-the-fittest type scenarios (ISSTH).
- Numerous abandoned plot developments and time-skips. The next chapter often starts with "1 year later..."

Even if you've never read any CN wuxia novel post 2015, you could just about predict every plot twist along the way.

That said...

The manga adaptation is staggeringly impressive!! Astonish artwork (for CN adaptation), close to the level of... more>> HK graphic novels. The story and plot was also significantly revamped to be well paced and make MUCH more sense.
I know it's not appropriate to judge a novel by manga standards, but bias always creeps in. 4 stars.
Just skip the whole novel and read the manga.
Reminds me of "Solo Leveling", another incredibly subpar novel that was saved entirely by the genius of the graphic artist.

EDIT:
Unfortunately the joy ride doesn't last. Graphic artist was switched out midway past Chapter 100, and the manga turned absolutely lame. <<less

Decent LN, has all the standard xianxia pre-requisites, toad wanting swan meat, cannot see Mt. Tai, riding a tiger down the mountain, pity about the TL though like most XXW stuff requires some TLC and retouching here and there but if you can see past the phrasing, tensing and few grammatical faux pas' its quite an intriguing read.

As with everything exert patience with the LN and you'll enjoy it :)

Any charactaer that looks down on MC will eventually scalate things out of proportion to give MC a reasonable justification for killing him. MC blodline is a random op cultivation art supplier. Earth level warrior won save his life despite his archivements but barbarian race earth level warriors will scheeme against him (despite never personaly participating, otherwise he dead). His enemies will always be at the exact level where MC has to fight with his all but not higher or plot armor event happens.

Lacluster continuation for a good beginning.

4/5

I am glad I read the novel before reading the reviews, because I have an opinion that is the polar opposite of theirs. I am wondering if we were even reviewing the same book! It has a good plot, and the MC isn’t an arrogant jerk. I didn’t see the flaws that they had. For me, this book is pretty good, although nothing special to set it apart from other xianxia novels, which is why it did not receive full five stars.

I’m not quite so sure why this novel... more>> has such bad reviews. As of chapter 19, I did not see any “please-step-all-over-me” from the MC. I am assuming that the “I destroyed your family part...” from the first review is about his father abandoning him for the Jin Clan (I don’t regard this as a spoiler since it is revealed in the first chapter). His step mother treated him fairly well. He wasn’t threatened by his family (although no doubt in the future he will be, but his step mother and sister are very friendly, esp the sister). The Jin Clan hasn’t done anything to him or forced him to do anything. They have left him alone so far, although I expect that

Spoiler

he would have to fight his cousin because of a qi ling pill. Still, the clan treated him fairly well because of his father’s contributions to the clan. The gave the MC a mansion, restaurant, and lotsa money.

[collapse]
. As for character development, there hasn’t been that many chapters released so far, do you really expect it this early in the story? I wouldn’t expect it, unless the MC is a huge a**hole.

As for the second review, he does get stronger? I don’t really know what you mean by spending a lot of money and not getting stronger. I don’t really consider the following in the next spoiler box a spoiler, but it concerns the mc’s development in chapter 1, so I guess it kinda is?

Spoiler

He reached level 7 of a the Body Tempering practice, was stagnant for two years or so, then because of a special something he discovered, he managed to improve quickly to level 9. His growth of strength was considered impressive. In addition, it has been said that practicing martial arts is a very expensive endeavor. He’s a poor fisher, how much could he possibly make? And with his limited money, obviously there would be limited improvement. Although to progress through higher levels, one needs to have talent and hard work, all the money in the world couldn’t help you then. this all is just in chapter one. He becomes much stronger after he gets the mansion and starts using the money to study more techniques.

[collapse]
He gets stronger after he started training in ch 5, so I believe you made a premature decision. I don’t know why you would call the MC dumb either. He hasn’t done anything s*upid, but then I may have misinterpreted your sentence. As for the repeated unknown words, if you read more Chinese novels, you'll get used to it over time. some of the terms pop up frequently in other novels. Also, the translation is much better than a machine translation. The translation is very clear and well written, I never thought I was reading a different novel. I find it a pity that you decided to drop xianxia forever since it is a genre I really like. I suggest you try reading more than two novels before dropping the entire genre altogether, you’ll pick up the terms more easily if you read more of them. <<less

It is the worst book by this author, I dont know it is written in 2017 but it looks like the book written by begginner author. A record of mortal's journey to immortality and demon's diary are far better than shit.

It looks like author completely abandoned his style and decided to write something new, which is how we got this horrible mess. Arcs are not really tied into overeaching story, MC motivation and love interest are shit, world is wierd as well, we have magician, body builders, cultivators dont know... more>> wtf is going on? Author just abandons all interesting abilities. <<less

The story is good, and it's quite pleasant to discover the world consrruction, details and the different cultuvation systems.

But there are quite a few loopholes and the story becomes a bit borring arround the chapter 400. The romance is sometimes a bit garbage ... more>>

there is the classical diseapearance/kidnapping of the MC lover to give the MC a new goal

Also, what's going to follow is a bit of a ranting, but beware that around before the chapter 400 that the translation team changes,... to become quite a pain to read for moments: a same character will have differents naming in the same chapter, previous cultivation key words are now different without making any better sens, sometimes leading to a confusing undertanding for some important reveals, and each chapter have a few sentenses painfully organized, even for a native french person like me. Well, as you've guessed, after chapter 400, it's mostly mtl like quality and badly edited with that. That made me giving up on this novel... <<less

The story has a s*upid wooden MC, which is at the same time pictured as clever. Like not testing all of his magic items/tools even though he uses his techniques with full power on every rank up. Or observing a critical situation with a gigantic monster that focus and kills every escapee and tries to escape.

Besides that, his incentive to grow stronger is questionable. The main one is I'm gonna make my mummy proud, strongest warrior of them all. The second one is even more ridiculous, while getting robbed by... more>> a female cultivator of his priceless spirit pet he declares: he wants to marry her because mummy said so. Then there are at least 3 deus ex machina rescues of his life without any hints beforehand, in between the first 200 chapters.

As a side note the author has a issue with numbers of all kind, be it physical strength, money, spirit stones, length and sizes.

Spoilers ahead:

His cheat skill is a part of a heavenly bloodline with integrated memories, that gives the MC at the BEGINNING of the story the strongest cultivation technique of the universe (foundation techniques at the beginning and the real technique later). The concept of it is even worse. Just one person can cultivate it to the end. Every other cultivator that practice it, will get their cultivation and all their technique s**ked/leeched/absorbed? By the one who finish it. <<less

MC want's to be a warrior that split the heaven and earth cliche not like his father that leave for martial arts then leave him and his mother until when his father is on deathbed his father seek the MC such bs for me. And the worst part is MC just go and see him and accept the one that his father leave him to shoulder the burden such cliche. He has no brain to control his destiny he just go with the flow. I accept the fact that his... more>> father leave him to protect him and his mother because martial arts world is bloody but when MC with his mother is left out to suffer his father had a second wife or a mistress that had a daughter mc's half sister That living with his father just until his father died that they seek MC and just throw the burden on him such bs ?

I'll say I don't know if I will like it or not. If he is smart or matures throughout the story then i'll read it not just the wanna be a warrior type MC that just battle his opponent head on then that's it for me

I don't care if the characters is just a cardboard copy, 1D or the story is bland or just tr*sh. I just rate with the first impression the novel give me and read it till I drop it <<less

A novel that has a potential but was ruined. His powerups was too OP for me to the point that only his OP powerups was the most noticeable and not his hardwork. For me, even if this MC did not work too hard, he would still be the strongest, even if he did not experienced many life and death situations, he would still be the strongest. Why? Thats because of his OP powers. He have OP inheritance, OP bloodline, OP pet sparing partner. So even if he did not work... more>> hard, he would still be the strongest. For me, its okay even if the MC was too OP, if the novel was for entertainment comedy purpose. But this novel was a serious novel, there was a lack of fun here, so the OPness of the MC worsen this novel. And you know what I felt cringed in this novel? It was the reason that the MC work too hard to the point that he even risk his life for it. And what is that reason? A girl that he fell in love at first sight. Man, it was too cringey, he barely met that girl twice, and he was already devouted to her? Fck, I dont even know why he fell in love with that woman, because if the cause was the beauty of that woman, he have many beauties on his sides that has the beauty that can compared to her that have feelings for him. So childish. The details of this novel was inappropriate for a serious novel like this. So its absolutely naaah <<less

Author's worst work. World background is still slightly interesting, but everything else can be summarized in one word: dry. Interaction between characters is so bad the MC rarely talks to anyone other than saying pleasantries. Description's style of fight scenes is very tiring to read. Deus ex machina is omnipresent and very evident. Overall plot also weak till now.

A good novel. Read upto chapter 56. I won't say it's a unique novel completely different from others, but it's no too stereotypical either. Fairly engaging.

The interesting part that I find in this novel compared to the other novel is the path the MC takes. In most similar novels, the MC goes from tr*sh to Super OP. In this novel though, the MC is considered extremely talented and the top fighter in his city for several chapters, and then it comes crashing down as they find that he has a... more>> horrible defect. Going to continue reading it for now.

Edit: Thumbs up to the editor of the novel. Originally there were quite a few grammatical errors, but thanks to the new editor, this problem has gone. <<less
