I think the title is a little misleading. This story has nothing to do with any "hidden masterminds". If a protagonist having a semi-secret system counts as a "hidden mastermind" then quite a lot of fictions will qualify for that description. Maybe the author has a vision to go further in that direction later, but as of chapter 33, there's nothing like that.

The horror stories themselves are... B grade work. Ghost appears, says some spooky stuff, protagonist points out a contradiction and the ghost goes poof. Or ghost abducts protagonist... more>> somewhere, protagonist has to find his way out, then he wins.

The ghosts themselves almost feel like they're on repeat. This is somewhat true, but it feels a lot worse than it is because the author reuses one ghosts traits in a rather blatant manner, so you go looking for it in the other ghosts. Some ghosts just don't have much of a presence either. They appear, give the protagonist a riddle, he runs around a bit, but solves it with minimal effort.

Nothing is particularly interesting. I feel that this novel is higher rated than it deserves because not enough people make these ghost story novels and people want more. <<less

No rating because I'm dropping this early for a reason unrelated to the quality of the writing

The protagonist is a classic pe*vert who has constant internal monologues about the bodies of every girl around him, which gets pretty annoying but I'm used to it at this point, what I'm not used to is the fact that ... more>>
Spoiler

he saw a classmate die a disgusting death getting her every orifice penetrated by a monster's hair tent**les, being puppeteered from the inside and having her body bent in inhuman ways, soiling herself as she died, and his only thought was to fantasise about the idea of another one of his (presumably dead) female classmates similarly soiling herself

[collapse]

There are pe*verts that make me laugh, pe*verts that make me cringe and pe*verts that make me genuinely sick, this MC is the latter <<less

TL is average, it just reads awkwardly. There isn't a good hook or a reason to keep reading. MC doesn't seem terribly interesting either. It has a system and status window, etc. Just feels awkwardly put together.

For now a tentative 4.5, but things look really promising

20 chapters in and the basic premise is, for those who are curious, a guy exploring, surving, and interacting various haunted places and ghosts.

Spoiler

I personally think that the guy (without realizing) unsealed an old school building, revealed to be built atop a graveyard, and is now dealing with the fallout

[collapse]

It reminds me a little of "My House of Horrors" (totally recommend checking that out btw).

So far it doesn't appear to be a one man show, some of the novel's substance comes from the other characters which is a plus for me.

Edit: Not so much hidden mastermind so far though <<less

It's the third work I'm reading from this author, and I'm liking it as I like the other two (Taming the villainesses and Pseudo-illegal resident or whatnot I don't remember the full titles). The mystery elements give a nice spin to the system trope, whilst the story proceeds with an enjoyable pace. The translation from NorneTL is really good, enough to transmit the comic undertone that permeates the work. Hoping to see more of it!

It's quite entertaining. The premise is basically encounters with the supernatural, with an MC having a system closely intertwined with said encounters, much like a horror game as seen from the third person perspective. First off, the horror aspect - It's not so much as uncanny, gore, jump scare, or the grim kind of horror. I'd like to point out that I'm fairly scared of horror genre, however, the horror of this work is portrayed as such that I can read it before sleeping and even be curious about what... more>> will happen next. It's the similar kind of horror like the movies "Casper", "Ghost busters", and others along that spectrum. Basically, it's the comedic kind of horror, and the way this is possible is because of the main cast, which is the second point. They're kids in high school and although they're sensible people, they act their age; that is to say that they've got that curiosity, innocence, and vigor to face something head on, albeit of course their fear being evident. The protagonist and the main characters are quite likeable as they have differing personalities, offering a multitude of reactions to their encounters. Although likeable, they still have their own set of flaws characterized by their circumstances, the complexity of expressing genuine sentiments in human relationships, and external factors. Don't worry, they have character development. That's at least what I've seen while reading, piecing gist of information and inferencing them. Said circumstances ties closely and nicely to the plot, leading to the third point and what sets it apart from the similar movies mentioned before - binding the narrative cohesively to create something engaging - Mystery. It's a horror-comedy, however, what prevents it from drifting to horror-parody (A comical nonsense that makes horror the narrative for the absurdity; Those stories have their charm, but this prolly isn't that kind of story) is the mystery. In this way, though you can have a reading experience with a degree of nonchalance due to its lighthearted portrayal, it doesn't compromise the serious and solemn feeling you and the characters have for what they're facing, as even though it has comedy, they have no idea about what they're really facing, essentially the unknown, thus can lead to death being a consequence - and the mystery is implicitly tied to each characters' past, which shaped and may shape them as a person.
Spoiler

There's also the overarching plot regarding the protagonist's system which hasn't been explored deeply yet, and the main characters', of course.

Spoiler

Jeong Seok is an observer who intentionally turned a blind eye for his own benefit

Spoiler

Yang Juhui is a previous bully of the protagonist, albeit the degree is quite vague. Nonetheless, what can be teasing for the other party and a minor inconvenience to an observer, can be taken differently by the recipient.

[collapse]

They get character developments.

-To summarize, it's lighthearted horror with a touch of comedy, a decent mystery to pique sufficient amount of curiosity, vivid descriptions and interesting moments to retain engagement, and a cast of fleshed out characters encompassing it all.

Preference is subjective, and interest is an acquired taste. What's good enough can be eaten and should not leave for the next day until rotten. So, try it, it might suit your taste, kek.

This part might seem like kissing up to the translator for a chapter and it is, lololol... but the translation quality is quite good. The point gets conveyed across, and although there are some awkward reads due to minimal grammatical error, it shouldn't matter much as it's quite cohesive and can be comprehended, anyway. <<less

Interesting, reminds me of the mystery of hotel novel, lots of plot twists in this novel and the MC and the side-characters are fleshed out and feel human. Translation is good as well. Give it a try it won't disappointment.

Pretty interesting. They basically experience a dead by daylight-esque game and supernatural events start occuring as well.

It also reads more like a jp novel rather than kr novel.

Need more chapters.
