Added to my favorites. Best storytelling. Best main couple. It's more like a growing up story. And stories like those are right up my alley. I love the type of stories where they really make you appreciate youth. The nostalgia when they grew up is strong with this one too. I loved it.

It's seriously so good.

I almost didn't read it because it starts off a bit slow and takes a lot of time to build up the setting and explain the area and time period. But, reading this novel is absolutely worth it.

It's sad, and painful, and it hurts, but that's what makes it so real. The author doesn't skim over things if they get too painful, instead she really explains the feelings that come with those terrible things and how much happier everyone is once they work through the bad experience.

The... more>> feelings in this book are so real and good and fulfilling.

Read it, or else you're gonna miss out on learning something new about life. <<less

This story is equal parts passion and pain. I swear I have never cried this much in my LIFE. I literally can barely breathe my nose is so blocked. The fact that there's a full translation of this. I'm so grateful. Truly a beautiful novel, and it definitely deserves so much more love. The amount of heartbreak and hopelessness I felt reading this story is unmatched.

Both of the main characters are so compelling. They're both so self sacrificing, and the love they have for each other... literally just thinking about... more>> it is making me cry again. The depth of their feelings for each other is something truly special. They go through hell together, they support each other, and they would both willingly give their lives for each other.

I also love how there's no power imbalance between them. They're both powerful in their own ways, and they fight to stand on equal ground with one another. The bond they have is undeniable, which makes it even more heartbreaking when their reality is so bleak.

I felt myself just holding back dread the entire time, as the author likes to sprinkle in little moments of foreshadowing throughout the novel, something that I probably could have done without. Honestly the constant foreshadowing one liners were the only issue I had with this novel, but I'll definitely be rereading for all the sweet moments. Because trust me, there's plenty of beautiful scenes between the two leads amidst the despair that the novel eventually leads you to.

This novel made me care about literally every side character too. The mob bosses in particular had a special place in my heart. Also the women in this story were mildly annoying at times but also strangely sensible— they knew when to finally back off and actually acted in emotionally mature ways.

Also just in case you're worried this is a HE!! No tragedy tag over here! Only nitpick about this novel is that there are some lines about them both being men and super manly that are a bit cringe ngl, but I can overlook it lol <<less

Excellent storytelling and the translation is superb! I am so in love with this story and this will forever stay in my heart!♡٩ (^▿^) ۶♡ Beautiful, poignant, angsty, warm and a good amount of smut in between. And yes, a HE!❤❤❤

Yang Lei and Fang Yu will forever be one of my favorite BL couple! They were realistically portrayed by the author. Their journey to being enemies at first, then becoming gangdom 'brother's' to slowly realising their feelings, their growth from teenage years to adulthood, their struggles and dreams, it all... more>> beautifully unfold before our eyes, it's like living in that exact moment with them. You feel the pain, the joy, the longing, just about everything!

Hua Mao, my heart hurts for him!

Special shoutout to the whole gang! I feel sad when one dies, but it's the reality of gang life during that era, and glad that the evil ones all get their retribution.

This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! If you don't mind vivid description of gore, then you can skip them but please don't pass on this novel just because of that! 4.6 rating is no joke and I believe it deserves higher than that! <<less

One of the most well written novels out there. The emotions depicted are so real and complex that I could feel them as I am reading. The characters are so dynamic that growth and development can be seen as the story progresses. This book is a hidden gem and I am so grateful that the translator took the time to share this masterpiece with everyone.

I really didn't expect everything I felt and experienced reading this novel, I didn't think I would fall so much in love with history, with them, with the brotherhood of all of them. This novel has become my favorite, I even get a little emotional talking about it. As I read it, I felt like I was there with them and was a close friend. I spent a long time looking for a novel worth the time, and I feel very lucky to have found this gem. What's more surprising is that it's a novel from 2011, but it feels so current. A story that I will definitely reread in the future!!!

I feel like that's all I need to say, but I'll go more in detail. The two main characters are amazing in their separate souls, and their dynamic is amazing. The side characters have depth, instead of just being there. I couldn't ask for a better translation. Must I continue?

it's how the romance in this novel is originally based on a physical relationship with a gay man and a straight man, and then the realization that the straight man became bis*xual is triggered by that physical relationship. I've disliked that forever because it implies that the physical is the core of the relationship rather than the actual people themselves. It's also weird because sexuality can't actually change, but it's a commonly used trope. In this case, though, I can see that the straight man was never actually straight because that epiphany was not only caused by lust. Also, the time skip hurt my heart so much. They broke up. QAQ.

This is a real gem.

It's been so long that I find a novel this interesting, so so long. I'm afraid it will end. It's so beautifully written and the story is so beautiful and heartwarming.

A total recommendation from me. I want to give more than 5 stars to this novel if possible.

I usually write a lengthy review whenever I made one. I used to always have so much to say. But MY THOUGHTS are a messed right now, and words are not enough to explain what I felt, I can only manage this much.

The story is well thought out, laid out like a map, from adolescence to adulthood. The writing almost felt like the author experienced it all, and they are just doing the story-telling, it flowed naturally. I had goosebumps. The characters are well-rounded individuals, one of the very few... more>> SENSIBLE COUPLES in danmei! Not just them but everyone, they felt so much like real person that I empathized with. When they're happy, I'm happy. When they cry, I also cry. This was truly one of a GEM. I laughed, I cried, and the writing made me feel super nostalgic. I was never interested nor listened to the songs featured or qouted in every novel, but GCF made me listen to all the old songs Fang Yu and Yang Lei listened to. IVE MADE PLAYLIST. That's how much it affects me. Kudos to the translator for keeping true to the text and kept it uncensored, and big thanks for translating such a beautiful story, without you taking the initiative and picking this out, we wouldn't know such a wonderful novel EXISTED!! THIS NOVEL DESERVES SO MUCH RECOGNITION, PLEASE READ IT. 1000000/10

PS. GCF easily competed with SAYE in my heart. Also, what are the chances that the protag in Saye are named Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei, and there's also Gu Fei in Hua Mao's story?! The names made me more elated. <<less

BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL. Good things need to be said three times. Honestly this story is definitely a rollercoaster ride of emotion. The happiness, the pain that they went through. Their sacrifices to each other are just so beautiful. Their journey is not easy but that what makes it special and meaningful. I'm sad that it's finished but I'm glad that I read it. I hope one day I can find someone like Fang Tu..

i wish I could give more than 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Simply a masterpiece, well written, well translated, full of drama action love. Characters were full of realistic approach, twists and turns kept me hooked on.

best part was reconciliation of ML and MC plus Hua mao finally finding love.

Its really difficult to find a good read after such excellent story.

Loved this novel. This was a rare one that had enough action and drama to keep me interested from start to finish. This novel touched on some painful topics that many/most danmei glaze over, such as h*mophobia and the inability to be with your loved one because the world won't accept it. Really heartbreaking. But regardless they get their happy ending and nothing toooo terrible happens to the main characters. They are both very good men with strong senses of honor and respect. They are also both very manly and... more>> could easily be reversible/switch, although I don't recall that they ever did within the story.

The feeling of this story is, overall, happy imo. And I'm glad that there was no love triangle or betrayal or non consent between the main characters or that sort of thing, in this. They really love each other. Also the smut is SO GOOD and SO MUCH. So much of it is smut, but it all actually is important to the plot and understanding the development of their relationship so it doesn't get boring. I really wish more authors would write smut like this!!!!!!!! And I wish this author produce more works!

My only slight criticism is that I would've liked to hear more about their future relationship and how their family and friends accepted it and all those other longer-term details, in the extras. Now I will always be curious. <<less

Made an account just to write that this is an underrated hidden gem of an amazing amazing story!!

Made me feel excited to read a bl book after soo long. Love love loved it!

In a way I want to gatekeep this novel so that its beauty stays hidden and I can come back from time to time to appreciate this story and the authors way of pulling us in the 90s nostalgia

I want to have a bro squad now like hua mao yang lei and fang yu.

Excellent writing. Hats off. Gangsters are also humans. They also have hearts. They also long for respect, love, care. We should definitely give them second chance to live an ordinary life. Love the author. I wish hua mao would get a good life partner who will treat him well. Pls respect humans no matter what their sexuality is. Humanity comes first, nothing else is important than a life.

I LOVE the MC and the ML. They're definitely one of my top 10 favorite pairings here.

But the author has a weird fixation on comparing a MM and MF relationship, putting down MF relationships as less pure or real or intense or whatever was the descriptor being used in the context.

Not to mention that it's actually lowkey homophobic when the author keeps emphasizing that MC/ML weren't really gay or not the same kind as the other openly gay side characters. It's just that, MC/ML just happened to like each other.... more>> Like? You're getting hard-ons and f*cking. You can't be any gayer than that.

There are also other problematic tidbits here and there but the story is a good balance of angst and romance. I don't think it was tied up neatly though, but overall I enjoyed reading the story. <<less

Oml. This novel is a masterpiece 🥹

The narration of their love is just so deep and admirable. Lovely characters with context to them. I love the main couple's love so muchhhh. I felt what they felt. A beautiful love story 💜

I wish HuaMao happiness too. I wanted more of him but that was okay too. I wished the author wrote other novels so I could read them. What a nice book!🥹

I made an account just so I could give this the 5 stars it deserves.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and got quite attached to its cast of characters. The focus is mainly on the two leads, but the author does well in making everyone else seem real and relevant as well. I especially liked how the side characters are actually the main drivers of events, while our leads are usually the reactive party. Makes it more exciting and feel more real -- our boys are crazy strong, but are victims... more>> of circumstance the way any regular person is.

Fang Yu and Yang Lei's world is ugly and dirty, and our protagonists can't truly be considered good people, but I loved them because they are portrayed as human and capable of growth, and I was rooting for their happiness the whole time.

The novel isn't perfect, of course, and I think there are itty bits of problematic stereotypes related to gender that are still hidden in the author's voice. The narrator, however, is a man living in the 90s, so we should expect his cultural ideals to reflect his time. So when I can tell that it's Yang Lei's voice that is doing the stereotyping, I can actually appreciate the realism. I'm glad GCF addressed the period typical h*mophobia, and also that it breaks the typical mould of MC/ML characteristics and dynamics. The female characters, while few in number, are portrayed well, which I was so glad to see given how unfairly they are treated in so many other novels.

Some people don't like that GCF uses such constant foreshadowing, and while I can admit that the author could stand to cut out a few instances of it, it did help keep me interested and anticipatory so I won't complain. I think the foreshadowing blends well with the theme of nostalgia too.

The translator did great. IMO, the pros wholly eclipse the cons. I don't know what else to say but that this is truly one of the best things I've read on this site. <<less

this was an amazing story, definitely a emotional rollercoaster. I'm glad it had a happy ending. The MC and ML love for each other was genuine and pure, the struggles of their orientation during those times. All the characters were well written and I'm glad that Hua Mao also received love that we so longed for. A must read.
