This is a story about a demon and a manga.

Previously a human, Yuan Yuan Yuan had accidentally became a half-demon. As a half-demon, she abided by the rules of the demon realm, and wholeheartedly attempted to keep her identity as a half-demon under wraps.

However, her peaceful life came to a halt after that one night — she disguised herself and saved a human from a demon.

One week later, when she was flipping through her favourite manga that she had been following, she suddenly discovered that the plot contained a disconcertingly familiar sight.

A black haired demon… had saved a human from another demon…

With his extraordinary abilities, strikingly handsome, aristocratic face and enigmatic background, the male demon quickly rose in fame as a 2D fiction character. Yuan Yuan Yuan looked at the latest chapter of the manga, flabbergasted, before she decided to quietly chomp on some chips and choose to selectively close both eyes — none of this is real!

Soon, she realised there was a pattern to this. Ever since that night, there was a very high chance that the things she did would appear in the manga.

In fact, whatever occured in the manga were things that had happened in reality as well. Therefore, in order to stay alive, Yuan Yuan Yuan had to try her best to hide her identity

As time passed, those that were interested in such unsolved mysteries came to realise the uncanny similarities between the manga and reality, and the pattern that it appeared to follow. And so, they started searching for these 2D characters in the real world.

A good novel for the type of novel it is, I have seen other novels of its type (where the character can travel in a manhua or is aware they are in one), and this is one of the best if not the best, I have read. The main character was very expressive, side characters were decent, especially the reactions. It was done well, as some others have said, the ending was somewhat unsatisfying, but other than that, it was a great novel. (4.9/5.0)

I binged read all 400 chapters in 3 days. No joke, I was hooked and I wasn't bored once while reading this. But the ending was AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! (Still worth a read though for sure! I don't regret it.)

So many questions were left unanswered!!!!

What the heck?!

There were a lot of things I was looking forward to but the ending made me feel like a burp that I just can't burp out. (That's a bad analogy but you get the idea.) ... more>>

First question: what was Yuan yuanyuan's background exactly? There were many foreshadowing in dreams that she might've been the reincarnated Seventeen, especially since he said he probably wouldn't remember his revenge before he fell into the red sand well and our protagonist has major memory loss related to how she became a demon/yokai. But this wasn't resolved AT ALL. Also Si qun has many unresolved questions. What made him dumb? Is he playing dumb or not? What happened that led both of them to have their lives tied to each other with each person swallowing half of the Gu Poison? Is he dumb or is he faking it? What happened with him and Li Wangchun aka his older brother? Some other questions like why his older brother smiled when he died, what exactly happened to Seventeen in the red sand well, what was the comic author's deal and what's his identity? Maybe he did want his manga to be the biggest selling one but it's definitely not as simple as that with the innuendos in the novel like the ancient demons knowing he's related to Seventeen. My guess is that he's the artist who painted the war painting and asked Seventeen why he always wore makeup before a battle, since I recall Liu An aka Fan Ling having a deep recollection of the artist's question and Seventeen's answer. For some reason I really wanted her true identity to be revealed but when that layer of onion wasn't peeled it made me feel empty. The story feels incomplete since we know as readers of the novel all the difficulties she's gone through after being forced to play Seventeen by the comic artist, but nobody not even the people closest to her know. Maybe only Si Qun knows and that's super vaguely suggested. Also I really wanted Yuan Yingli to meet her in actually flesh and maybe there would be an extra of them writing about the three hidden heroes: Circle, Fat Cat, and Red n Black. Anyways there's so many loose ends that I feel incredibly stifled rather than cathartic (what I expected to feel) when I reached the ending, especially since the author didn't disappoint which led me to have high expectations for the ending too, but I guess that didn't happen.

[collapse]

Even with everything I ranted about, this is definitely an above above average novel. <<less

I just finished reading this and I feel as though it was really rushed and am confused on why the author wrote the story like this. It is really interesting story however... it leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

i made an account to mainly vent out my frustrations about this novel

i just dont understand why they put in the beginning her dream where she hears "dont forget" as well as many details showing she seems to have a connection to 17 maybe sis or 17 themself. Also why was four groups brought out in the end when they never really tell us the mystery behind him or his relationship with 17 and his sis as well as the reason for the white silk poison. Why was he struck dumb was it because 17 died or something else. Who is yuan at the end is she a being made from the red well hole or 17 or related to 17? Why does she have so many details that relate to 17 and why did the li family smile at the end. Was it ended like that on purpose or did the author have to end it there for some reason because of external issues. I felt since realizing that yuan may be more complicated then what she seems since the 1st chapter I was waiting for some of these questions to be answered but I just kept on having more questions and at the end after waiting patiently even when reading the lat chapter 400 and seeing it end ambiguous that we will never know and I just cant help but feel frustrated lik I wasted my time. It was a good story snd it was interesting to read but I'm angry with how it ended and wish to know why the author cut the story when there were still things that were never answered. To be honest I would have like to know that it would have been this type of story in the beginning because all I ended up with was a stomach ache.

But the ending feels a bit rushed, as there are still a few unanswered questions. Like what is the relationship between MC and Yiqi. Throughout the story, it feels the author hinted that MC is Yiqi's reincarnation since our MC will subconscious fends off her opponents, and she'll also seems to be influenced by unexplained emotions.

[collapse]

My favorite part of the novel is towards the ending. But I wished there are extras. I want more!

Spoiler

Our MC pulls a Lelouch. She traumatizes the protagonist twice. The first time occurs when she fakes her err his death (she's crossdressing, and was known as Yuan) by faking having a serious illness and strike down by the protagonist. The poor protagonist was shocked when he later learned that Yuan was his salted fish master. Of course the protagonist was relieved to learn that Yuan only faked his death.

But the second time, Yuan decided to become the final boss and have the protagonist kill him so that the war between the human and demon can be prevented. People who read the manga (and didn't know that the manga is based on reality) thought that everyone in the manga except for the protagonist will never know the sacrifice that Yuan made, as everyone (depending on which side they were in) in the manga either praise the protagonist of getting rid of Yuan, or curse the fact that Yuan is weak. However, the truth is that both the people and demons later learns the truth via the manga and choose to remain in silence. One of Yuan's fangirl (whose life have been save bey Yuan before), was upset and she believe that Yuan will never know that everyone know about Yuan's sacrifice. But the truth is the MC only fakes her death again, and she's having her happy retirement life

Well this developed quite unexpectedly. All I can say is too much plot twist and secret identities!

Spoiler

From the synopsis you'd expect a MC discovering they're in a manhua and then manipulate the events in the book to their advantage. Here however the manhua is more like a live broadcast of happening events. And not only the MC, all the people - both demons and humans who knows of existence of demons, are aware of it. Which leads to people from different interests in the real world trying to influence the characters that appears in the manhua.

There's not a lot on the author of the manhua except that he's a poweful demon trying to stir sh*t up, dragging out secrets from the past. And both our MC and the protagonist (of the manhua) is being dragged into it. The real identity of characters (in the manhua) are censored so they won't have to deal with crazy fans stalking them or crazy people wanting to kill them in the real world, i.e to an extend.

Theres a lot of fans conspiring and deducing, running to scenes in the Manhua that they recognize (lol). They root for the supposed villains in the manhua, make fanarts and and fanfiction, some ancient demons even buying phones to read manhua online. Our MC and protagonist even met and lived together in real life without realising the others identity. But in the end we never find out if Yuanyuan was really Yiqi's reincarnation (which I was really convinced she is QAQ)

[collapse]

The story is great overall, my only grip is with how sudden the scene changes are, which is more jarring in autotranslate. I hope the TL is better at this point, but boy I'm too far gone. <<less

one of my favs so far. no romance, which I don't mind, and the plot is fascinating, in depth, and uncovers more and more secrets while still leaving enough unsaid to leave you hooked (and the author trusts the reader to understand implicit things sometimes, so you feel smart hehe)

yuan yuanyuan is an awesome protagonist who grows and changes as the plot develops. sometimes it's a little silly (she gets a little too used to the change too fast, or the author forgets about one of her alter egos... more>> etc.) but it's still interesting.

the novel blends humour, plot, the reality of war and politics and backstabbing, cliche tropes as a genuine plot mechanism, and interesting and decently developed side characters to make a story that hooked me from ch... 5? I think? and which I check daily for updates lmao

only con I can think of rn is that the translation quality drops a little... sometimes things are very obviously mtl'd or chatbotted, and sometimes terms are straight up transliterated (eg. the bar qiu ying being transliterated once into autumn sakura) or the 'protagonist''s name (fan ning afaik) being written as fa ning, ning, faning etc. which breaks the immersion

the more recent chapters also have a lot more translation issues - sometimes I straight up don't understand what's going on, which is a shame.

still rating it 5 stars bc the plot's too good 😔 if I included the translation quality it'd maybe be 3.5 stars <<less

A hidden gem I randomly encountered today.

The GenderBender "girl has to pretend to be a ikemen" got me hooked! I have very specific tastes in novels and it's been so long since I've been this excited for one. It only has 39 chapters and I'm dying for more 😭

I've tried mtl but everything's confusing. ;-;

... more>> So I look forward for more updates! 👌

Update: I mtl the whole thing, couldn't wait. It was very confusing but I could understand the gist of what was going on. And I just wanna say I loveeee this novel. The gender bending and misunderstandings are the ✨best ✨

I do have a few gripes about this novel though...

I really wish that it was longer because I felt like there were things that weren't explained yet and because I was craving for more.

My biggest story gripes.

Spoiler

It was never explained why Yuan Yuan sometimes felt strong emotions as if she WAS really Yuan. And the character "four groups" (his name in the mtl) seemed to be a major part in the story but he barely appeared at all?

Even so, this was me reading the mtl so maybe it was explained? I don't know.

[collapse]

I really love this story and hope it updates more, (so I read something actually comprehensible...) 👍 <<less

I loved this novel!

I just read the first 20 chapters and I've already fallen in love with it. I've never written a review before but I was inspired to try after reading.

The MC is honestly exactly the kind of main character I love to read. Though I do like gender benders and hidden identities, most of the time characters lose track of their original aim for hiding their identity (at least it the ones I've read). The main character however, her personality is defined right from the get go. Her... more>> main goal is to survive in the modern world of demons after becoming a half demon but her own humanity and kindness get her into troublesome situations. She hid her identity originally to avoid getting in trouble for saving a human girl. However, later on after she sees herself in the manga Demons she is constantly putting on different faces in order to avoid being recognized.

Her glamour transformations sound so cool. The way the author described her face changes and the scenes that appeared in the Demons manga was so vivid that it made me feel I was looking at an image.

I desperately want to read more of this but mtl kinda ruins novels for me. I will try my best to be patient and wait for new chapters. This story is definitely worth the wait. <<less

(For ease of reference I will just use "demon" although the proper term is "yaoguai".)

I was a person obsessed. Couldn't stop reading it from start to end. It may not be truly 5 stars (maybe a 4++) but I had to leave a review so that more people read it so that I get more Yuan fan-content. PLEASE Some parts reminded me of "A Guide for Background Characters to Survive in a Manga", especially due to the way manhua and world intersect (though there are some key differences... more>> in two-way impact) and how the MCs utilize that for their benefit (with varying degrees of control/intent - as Yuan Yuanyuan is not as intelligent scheming as Su Bei!)

The realness of the online reactions was great and very relatable, some scattered references to pop culture as well. Plot progression made sense overall and most of the misunderstandings / mysteries were well-paced, peeled back layer by layer in-universe and in-novel in a way that didn't feel rushed. Well, except for some that previous reviewers may or may not have pointed out:

Spoiler
    1. Ji Qiu. WHO IS HE? How is he related to the whole situation? Why did he orchestrate and draw this entire story? Since the early stage I was convinced on this point, that Ji Qiu was plotting to make known to the whole world the true history behind 17's death at the Red Sand Well. Then near the end I was convinced that he had even larger plans - to use this story to put an end to the divide between humans and demons. Even doing a live-action drama could just be so more people know and pay attention to the story. Add to the fact that he had 17's jade talisman and I STILL strongly suspect he is somehow involved in past historical events. All the threats & messages to our 2 MCs (the real and the... meta?) could just be manipulating them to how he wanted things to progress. Or... he could really just be screwing around so he can write a story he likes... LOL
      • (Side note I thought Ji Qiu's name was quite interesting - could be "Autumns" (plural) but if you add a question mark it could be "How many autumns?" a la how many autumns since then - or till then? Though CN author names are often either ~poetic~ or just random nonsense so)
    2. Si Qun's health/mental state and the whole hullabaloo about his and 17/Yuan's fates being intertwined. So why did he do it!! And does his diminished state mean that 17 was indeed in some way alive? Especially since the story ends with the white butterfly (guessing we're supposed to think it's Si Qun) flying away from where it was in YYY's garden. IS HE OK??? Is he checking in on YYY? Does him being a butterfly mean he's better or worse??? Or is it that he is no longer tied to him bc his hair is black? Idk man.
    3. 17/Yuan: I'm strongly leaning towards the idea that YYY is 17's reincarnation in a slightly botched-up way - since she suddenly became a half-demon for no explainable reason, making a face that looks exactly like 17 despite never seeing him before, the dreams and dream-like fugue states, her "illusion transformation" ACTUALLY transforming her into a DIFFERENT PERSON since the jade turns red, her body being affected by the curse even when not in Yuan form, perhaps even her original best ability being illusion-based...
    4. Yuan's health: Somewhere in the middle Yuan sees two doctors - all giving her the same diagnosis (and one of them twice) that there is something wrong with her body and advising not to use her powers. YYY dismisses this (despite being downed by huge fever two times that she overuses power), but author drops a line that she would come to think differently about this later. It was not revisited. Unless referring in advance to the poison/curse, where Li Family Head says the poison/curse will cause Yuan's body to melt from the inside out... And throwaway line that YYY discovers her body CAN SHIFT ORGANS AROUND because some parts are EMPTY... (mostly to hand-wave how she escaped death tho). SO IS YUAN OK OR NOT?
[collapse]

Or all of these could just be author having vague ideas but not actually fleshing them out lol. In general, the hints dropped come back and resolve themselves though.

I also like YYY a lot because she is a slacker who works hard to slack off more. Love that for you girl.

Anyway, overall it was a very fun reading experience. Action scenes, beautiful man scenes, beautiful lady scenes, cool scenes (it IS a manhua), xianxia? tropes (though it's a demon story?), meta use of tropes, actually quite funny sometimes comedy, misunderstandings, lazy-but-powerful, hidden identity, did I mention beautiful man? Author definitely has consumed a very large share of fan content and run in anime circles before. For those to whom it matters: NO romance, though ships are used as a vehicle for plot. (As ships are indeed vehicles this sentence made me pause.) Some gender identity knots that won't be untangled. It's a gender-flipping read with

he died thinking that things would go the way he wanted - with the king killed by Yuan, the demons would definitely push him into being the new leader and bringing them to war against the humans, just as Li always advocated for human genocide. 5/5 (4.8/5 'cause MC Coward)

I'm currently stocking up until the translator finishes, but this is one of my favorites! I don't usually read Chinese novels because of all the "brain-dead" characters, the excessive ! And blatant propaganda and nationalism (tbf this is a issue across the board, but I have bad luck and seem to always find the CN with the highest (?) scores lol), but this is masterful weaving of story and characters. The translation is not the best, but very consistent and fast!

This protagonist is cowardly and... more>> I had to take breaks just to calm myself down, I'm a sucker for OP protags sure, but misunderstanding how strong you are when it's literally written before your eyes!!! The author definitely did it on purpose and I have some theories, but even knowing that doesn't mean I don't want to wring MC's neck sometimes <<less

Because of the summary, I have some expectation that the story might contain some mystery, fantasy, and, maybe adventure to opening hidden past.

Unfortunately, the mystery feel just exist at the early part of the novel. It feel more like slice of life after that, with some occasional battle and supernatural phenomenons.

The MC personality actually adorable and cool, I like her (him?). She is a simple minded person that isn't easily being affected by negative environment. Her fighting ability is good too.

With this kind of personality, it would be good if... more>> the MC is in the shonen- kind of story. But the author is trying to put MC in some political plot (which not ended really good for the plot progression). The MC is too simple minded and lack of understanding of what should she do at that occasions. The results is stagnant relationship with other important players, thus making the story progressing slower than it should and too much fillers. But if you like slice of life story, this part might not bothering you.

I choose to read Ending spoiler since the story drifting toward direction that I do not enjoy (too much slice of life). Well, I'm not amused. One of my fav characters just lost in the thin air and a lot questions left unanswered. At least one of my predictions is right and my other fav character is hinted being together with the MC (this part isn't really clear though, but I will just swallow it because their cheap moments are cute.) <<less

This made me feel so many things. It has. So many layers. The way the manga (or is it manhua?) is perceived and the reactions caused by it is just. I don't even want to get started on Yuan. Oourgh

The ending hit me like a gut punch and it made me metaphorically throw up and fall over, and slam my desk. I understand that saved girl too well...

10/10 would put it just next to ORV because of some of the aspects and the utter mystery that was the author.
