This one had a VERY unreliable narrator, and it was very well done. I had to go back and reread chapters to figure out what exactly was going on, and that's a good sign of a well-written whodunit. I *had* read the manhwa before I read the book, but there are always some details that are different between the two, although this one was adapted surprisingly close to the book. I honestly would have had some real problems following the storyline if I hadn't read the manhwa first, because there... more>> are so many subtleties. I also ADORE that there are no heroes, only levels of villainy. It feels so much more realiztic, and let's hear it for rooting for the villains! The writing was hard to follow but the plot was excellent, and the smut was HOT. Worth rereading for the smexy times! <<less

This novel is one of the example of good premise ruined by mediocre storytelling. There were too many descriptions about FL and ML's agonies which got repetitive over times until I want to yell, "Enough is enough. Just get over it, will you? It's already more than half the story". It really feel so pointless to me.

Aside from that, the author introduced many characters in the beginning of the story. I thought at least they would become a cannon fodder but no, they just appeared and went very quickly, totally... more>> wasting the word counts. The time skip also didn't help much since we didn't know what happened in those years until FL and ML getting close together so I always feel that they lacked of chemistry.

Don't ask about the sm*t. It was awful. I don't know if it's because the original writing or the translation but just don't expect much from the sm*t.

The translation could be better. There were so many parts of this story that were so hard to understand, especially the dialogues which were so awkward to read. I haven't read the manhua version so temporarily, I couldn't compare both versions yet. <<less

Nice, short read. Ideal for those who enjoy a genuinely crazy main couple. Not many sm*t scenes, but they are tastefully done. The translation is good, but can get confusing at certain points.

Found the killer and the lil twist, so I dropped it after 25.3.

The translation is choppy at best, headache-inducing at worst; it looks hot off an MTL. It isn't completely unreadable, but it didn't get the polishing it needed.

The story itself's a little meh as there's too much build-up where it doesn't count, and not enough where it does. The writing is all over the place, and the plot swings between the trudging of a slug to a sudden fall off a cliff. From "Why does this matter?" to "Where... more>> did these developments come from? Who are you, and why do you matter"

It feels like it wanted to be "The Viridescent Tiara, " but with a mu*der-mystery spin and some 18+ scenes, which would have been fun, if it were better written.

Spoiler

Story starts off focusing on the family dynamics and intrigue after the funeral of Ophelia and Alexander's parents. Why so much focus on this when the serious is barely 30 chapters with the side stories? I get it. She needs a reason to stay after the funeral, but if you're going to limit your story's chapter count so much, this should have just been a summary. Uncle Adrian's little arc is way. Too. Long. (Also who tf is Catherine? Alexander's cousin? We didn't get much info on her even though she slapped the taste out of Ophelia's mouth)

There's a three-year time-skip, but no one went anywhere to excuse it. The Ophelia and Alexander stay in the duchy, and we don't get to see how they got closer, but they suddenly are. All that family drama could've been spent here. It's been three years and they found themselves closer with time? Would've been nice if we saw it too....

Alexander'a diary makes no sense other than to serve as a red herring. The entries look so weird. No one journals like that, Author-nim.

What's the story behind the syringes? I dunno. Maybe it's explained in the last few chapters, but who cares? Because literally what did it contribute to the plot? Absolutely nothing. Mom used/had syringes for something shady, but nothing that would've contributed to the "mysteries."

Henrietta's just... why...? Why did she think Alexander favored her, when he didn't? But while he doesn't favor her, why bother remembering her name? Also her reveal as the actual mu*derer is so lackluster and unsatisfying because we learn it from HER POV. NOT BECAUSE ANYONE SOLVED ANYTHING. Those lines essentially boil down to "im the mu*derer uwu pwease punish me, master." And when she said she confessed to the killing, Alexander didn't believe her. At least not until after she died?? Or was that a fake belief, and he still suspects Ophelia?? NO CLUE.

And then there's f**king Claude/Cain. What was the point? He didn't add any layer of interest or intrigue to the main mystery. I thought he was somehow involved in the mu*der of the parents. That he was someone who held a grudge and was able to trick Henrietta into melting the carriage spokes years ago, but he's just a separate, bitter case who had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACCIDENT, EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD'VE BEEN GREAT IF HE MASTERMINDED IT SOMEHOW. He hardly show's up after his intro, barely any suspicious activity that could've foreshadowed him STRANGLING OPHELIA. He just gets the one quip "you look familiar, " and then he gets like zero screentime until his big reveal as the biological bastard of the knight her mom married, who was sent to an orphanage prior to the wedding, but still got visits from dad, then was completely abandoned after the knight and mom's wedding.

[collapse]

The romance is relatively sparse for this romance story. They've got physical chemistry, but what's beyond that surface attraction? We'll never know cuz of that THREE-YEAR TIMESKIP.

Sorry for the ranting in and and out of the spoilers. I'm gonna pop some Advil.... <<less

This has a manhwa under the same name which I highly recommend, though the manhwa has had all the R-18 content completely scrubbed out lol.

I found this to be a very fun mystery-psychological thriller-romance. It had more twists and turns than I ever expected, the R-18 portions were hot (& fully consensual). The plot deals with themes of mu*der & deception, but otherwise there aren't any content warnings I can think of. (The MC enters the ML's household because their parents marry, but the relationship isn't remotely in*estuous - they... more>> meet as adults, & the MC ends up never even being entered into the family register as his adoptive sister because their parents die within a month of their marriage.)

It's been a while since I read a mu*der mystery so I very much enjoyed this novel. I won't dpoil anything because I definitely think it's worth reading yourself, as long as you're comfortable with darker themes. It's a great change of pace from the typical romantic fantasy fare, and it's the perfect length for the story it's telling. 5/5. <<less
