What’s Wrong With a Snake That Just Wants to Cultivate and Transform?

Description

Ji Yuebai, a genius in the cultivation world seen only once in a thousand years, was seriously injured during an outdoor training session when she encountered a little green snake.

She had always considered it her duty to eliminate demons and protect the Dao. Usually, she would dispatch these kinds of creatures with a single sword strike, but now, her severe injuries made it difficult to mobilize her spiritual energy. A slight misstep during her healing process could lead to demonic possession.

Helpless, Ji Yuebai could only watch as the jade-green little snake swam towards her across the water and wrapped itself around her body.

She made up her mind that as soon as her wounds healed a bit, she would cut this creature into a thousand pieces.

However, the little green snake, unaware of the impending disaster, fl**ked its pink tongue unconsciously. It just so happened to touch Ji Yuebai’s ears, as smooth and lustrous as pearls and jade, and suddenly found that the body beneath it started shaking uncontrollably.

It’s often said that snakes are naturally lustful, and demon snakes even more so. Ji Yuebai could no longer bear such a humiliation. What if she succumbed to demonic influences? She attempted to channel her spiritual energy into her sword, but at that moment, an icy sensation came from her wounds, providing temporary relief from the pain.

She then saw the green snake’s slender tail gently applying a sacred healing herb, which hadn’t touched water, to her wounds.

Ji Yuebai, the junior master from Tian Yuan Sect, who was always at odds with the demonic path, caused quite a stir in the sect when she returned from her training with a snake demon in tow.

Many people in the sect thought Ji Yuebai had lost her mind. Even more self-proclaimed warriors of justice, under the banner of demon-slaying and protecting the Dao, demanded the death of the little green snake, branding it a vile creature of evil.

That is, until Ji Yuebai stood on the Life and Death stage, shaking the fresh red blood from her sword, and said coldly: “Is there anyone else who objects? Let them speak on the stage of life and death.”

From that moment on, no one in the sect dared to bring up this matter again.

The little green snake followed Ji Yuebai in her daily cultivation. When Ji Yuebai got up, it did too; when Ji Yuebai rested, it would curl up into a ball in her arms and rest with her.

The unrivaled swordmaster of Tian Yuan Sect, Ji Yuebai, finally had a companion.

Many noticed that the Shishu, who used to have a stern face every day, now had much softer corners to her lips.

Until one day, Ji Yuebai woke up to a gentle, silky touch. She looked down to see an exquisitely beautiful woman with green snake skin softly curled up in her arms, her wrist resting on her waist in an almost boneless manner, and her voice was utterly captivating: “Yuebai, I’ve transformed~”

It was then that the always single-minded Ji Yuebai understood the true meaning of the term “demon.”

Note from the author: The blurb is from the perspective of Ji Yuebai, and the main story itself is [mostly] from the perspective of the little green snake Xu Nian.

Elder Bodhi's monster like appearance is never hinted and his character was always sidelined, it felt like the author was running out of ideas for the ending. His sudden evil stature was quite unexpected. I honestly thought his character wouldn't have had more than five sentences.

And while this novel is mostly about Xu Nian's tale, I did want a little more detail about Ji Yuebai's tale. She seemed invincible the entire story, she struggled but quickly recovered.

And the misunderstandings, while not fully infuriating, was constant. And their relationship progressed but they never truly talked about their feelings. And last but not least,

the amnesia trope, I'm counting the illusions, was over-used. I know it only happened twice to Xu Nian and once for Ji Yuebai, but it felt like half of the book had one of them as an amnesiac. I know it probably wasn't actually half, but it felt like it to me. And it's not really a main plot point so I felt it was used more than it should've been.

The pace is really good, the relationship is sweet, occasionally there are misunderstandings but nothing rage inducing. The only fault really was that some of the side characters didn't get fully fleshed out, as if the author prepared something for them but never really did anything with it, but the main characters story is sweet and full.

*Edit*

I'm coming back cause there's only two chapters left and I felt the need to clarify some things that other reviewers either got completely wrong or misrepresented. I don't know if they couldn't read into the subtext of what the story is trying to say, they just got too angry, or they're just impatient but it's not what a lot of people mentioned. Spoilers, so... yeah.

First, the other characters weren't killed off. The reader is left with a cliffhanger about whether they're still alive, but the writer very clearly left it open until XN and JYB can return to the sect. But if you're worried they ARE dead, they're not. Second, XN is NOT suddenly in a reincarnated story with a system. It's all a part of her illusion skill breaking down her mental barriers. I thought it was pretty clear that it was all part of an illusion for XN, but I guess my reading comprehension is a bit better than others. Third, the main story isn't abandoned for any weird subplot. We're given an explanation about XN's demonic race and a way to help XN and JYB develop their relationship. Admittedly it's a bit cliche (*sorta* amnesia coupled with delusions), but it works well. Finally XN isn't suddenly turned into a Mary Sue. She gets the power of illusion that can help JYB distract and kill people, but she's really not that strong. The illusion skill also has some serious side effects, so... Personally I felt XN was too weak and relied on JYB too much so it was nice to see a bit of balance thrown in without making her OP. Still a good story IMO, and XN and JYB get a lot spicier too. Oh... and... Inventory management? Really? I saw maybe two chapters talk about her shuffling her storage bags WAAAAAY early.

*End Edit*

It's almost halfway through the story if the Status in COO is to be believed, and I'm pretty confident that this is something I'm really enjoying.

Xu Nian is a reincarnator but... Well, she's been alive as a snake demon for sixty years, apparently a lot longer than she lived as a human in her previous life. So that comes with her having plenty of moments acting more like you'd expect a snake demon to act rather than a human. She's avaricious, coquettish, a bit manipulative, and hungry. She likes money, gems, and pretty dresses, even if she can't wear them.

One thing I'm thankful for is that, despite the fact that Xu Nian is more snake demon than human at this point, she doesn't completely forsake her past humanity just because demons are 'evil'. She has compassion and cares about people, even people that aren't related to her. That doesn't mean she hasn't adjusted to the new world she lives in as she still seems willing to kill to defend herself or others. She can be pretty brutal about it too. She's just doesn't act like some extreme edgelord from some seinen manga.

Ji Yuebai is kinda boring. She's one of those stereotypical righteous cultivators of justice, forgoing emotions and setting out with only the goal of power and all that. It changes after she meets Xu Nian, but not really? At least not yet. She's still flat and boring most of the time, only having Xu Nian teasing her making things interesting at all.

There are some cliches that detract from things overall, like

Spoiler

Ji Yuebai placing an oath on Xu Nian forbidding her from hurting humans.

or

Spoiler

Ji Yuebai getting amnesia after facing a heavenly tribulation and Xu Nian having to help her. Luckily this is a bit more fun as Xu Nian tries to take advantage of Ji Yuebai's slightly different personality to ingratiate herself to her. Her amnesia doesn't last too long either, but it was still a bit too cliche.

[collapse]

Overall I'm really enjoying this story and Xu Nian does a lot of stuff to make me laugh and make Ji Yuebai blush. <<less

there's suddenly a plot admin coming to play, Im not sure yet if it really is a real system or just a hallucination, given that Xu Nian is originally a reincarnated modern human turned snake, so that hallucination might be influenced from her past life. But even with the system and memory loss, the plot did not emphasize on Xu Nian interaction with the "system" at all and just about her believing she had a mission to fullfil, which is to make Yuebai fall in love and then make her kill her. So yeah, that kinda adds to my suspicion that the "system" is just an illusion to kill the bearer of the Moth demon technique.

the characters that the MC knew previously likely aren't dead. I think mustachemerl jumped the gun and made some assumptions, but theyre likely fine. This isn't a tragedy novel after all, and the MC does think of some ways they'd live. I will finish this novel once it's done being translated and change my review if necessary, however I expect it to just have a rushed wholesome ending.

We start of with Xu Nian, a demon snake that only wants to transform into a human form to live a peaceful life & cultivate. But after a fateful run-in with Ji Yuebai that normally will kill a demon beast on site. Xu Nian tries to help with the injuries & in the end gets put into a promise to never attack humans.

They separate & years later happen to meet again & this time Ji Yuebai saves Xu Nian life from cultivators & a monster. Xu Nian offers to repay her (also to try to get her to remove the promise & use her for protection), but they part ways again.

Ji Yuebai on a mission for the sect is attacked at a bad time & loses, only for Xu Nian to come along & take her away to care for her. After Ji Yuebai wakes up, she has memory issues & that begins the partnership with Xu Nian as they head out into the world together.

[collapse]

This is as far as I have gotten in the series. But so far it has been a decent novel & can't wait to continue it.

Edit: Finished the Novel. It was worth reading. Very enjoyable story.

Spoiler

Thou the curse flipping the MC memory into a system, probably based off her past lives memories of games, makes it kind of throws off the vibe for a little, till you get settled into the flip in the story as the MC progresses within the hallucination of the curse. It is almost like a variation of the earlier point in the story where the FL loses her memories, this is just the MC having memories suppressed & re-written till she beats the curse & regains her memories, but the FL still helps her because of her love for the MC

A wonderful read. I read through this without ever getting bored once. There's always something happening that kept me reading. I find MC (Xu Nian) and FL (Ji Yuebai) to be super cute, personality-wise and as a couple.

MC was very focused on cultivation at the start, but it was in no way near an obsession like other people are saying. She's also materialistic and vain, but she's charismatic enough that you still end up liking her character. It's such a breath of fresh air from all the perfect protagonists novel... more>> writers are making these days.

Spoiler

MC's growing affection for the FL along the story was also sweet and bitter in a way because you can clearly see that MC likes FL, but doesn't realize it until her own uncontrollable powers of illusion forced MC to realize it.

Steamy scenes mostly at the ending chapters of the story, if you're wondering. With forbidden snake stuff.

The relationship between the main characters develops well. FL seems like the typical yandere at first but it's revealed that she has a lot of insecurities and constantly holds back out of fear of endangering her relationship with MC. MC seems like the typical dense cinderblock in romance but is held back by her own modern perceptions of the disparity between her demon identity and identity of FL.

One prominent weak point of the story is that the plot beyond the relationship between the main pair felt rushed; I honestly wished... more>> the book was longer, so that other side character pairs and plot points could be shown in more detail.

Story also contains many typical cliches, like aphrodisiac plots, mating seasons, memory loss, time skip, and love rivals to develop their relationship.

Even saying all this, I still give the novel five stars. It's heartwarming, quick, and satisfying, and it's also fully translated. (It also has some heart-pounding scenes...!) <<less

It's overall quite boring. No adventuring, no intigue, no scheming, no real plot. You could argue it's acceptable for a romance novel, but so much of the novel is not even romance, it feels like most of it is actually just MC doing her inventory management. It's like reading about someone doing inventory tetris to fit one more thing they just found. And her journey on becoming stronger is basically she sits in one spot for a while and then advances a level in some sort of power scale, that's... more>> it.

One thing that I liked is how author put in detail to describe MC's life as a snake. It's a bit inconsistent though with what she can do with a snake body, one moment she's folding origamis, next moment she can't do a simple task. <<less

Overrated frustrating read. I found myself just wishing it would end after a while with all the misunderstandings. To be fair I absolutely hate misunderstandings and prolonging pre-relationship romance so if that's your cup of tea you might enjoy it. It feels like a very generic cultivation book mixed with some Indian soap opera that didn't really know where it was going and then just ended. Every time you think "Oh, they're finally just gonna be a couple without some dumb misunderst..." and suddenly someone misunderstands something no mortal could... more>> ever misunderstand or is to afraid to say something or gets amnesia or just turned around a split second to early or picked up a pebble the wrong way or something. Incredibly lazy writing.

Almost no extras have their stories concluded. They're just introduced and forgotten except for a sentence or two if they're lucky. Except of course the third wheel, only getting extra screen time to cause misunderstandings even though she should've been an interesting character if she wasn't treated like an obstacle by the author.

Reincarnation barely matters at all. I guess you could pretend as if it did because they'd "ascend" (as always in cultivation novels) to different worlds or something, but to me it's a nothingburger.

The plot outside of their romance would be interesting if it wasn't so repetitive, rushed and s*upid especially towards the end. Introduce new obvious villain > Oh no! He's a villain! > Good thing ice-block in the strongest ever! > Oh no he's stronger! > Now he's dead. They introduced the ice-block as if she was one of the strongest in the world (well, I guess you could see it as having the most potential but come on) while the pitiful little snake is super weak. But ice-block is actually like only at like level 4-5 out of 16 (or 17 counting ascension) at beginning and barely ever just straight up wins a fight even though she's presented as if she should be able. The levels overall feel inconsistent. At times a single level can be the difference between like Muhammed Ali and a toddler, at other times several levels difference don't matter at all.

Spoiler

Especially frustrating was after the SECOND amnesia (as if the first one wasn't already cliché enough), the snake gets her memories back but decides to prolong the s*upidity for a while. I guess it's because of the hallucinations but I really don't care if it has an explanation or not. It's s*upid anyway.

Translation (DragonTL) is on point though, one of the best aspects of the novel I suppose. <<less

First completed review on this website:

What a great story. So many smiles had!

First, an important note from the author: The blurb is from the perspective of Ji Yuebai, and the main story itself is (mostly) from the perspective of the little green snake Xu Nian. (actually, I should just add this to the description)

... more>> I'd like to give it a little more than 4 stars, somewhere between 4 and 4.5. But I must choose a whole number, so 4 it is.

This series is an interesting one. It does a few things in quite a unique way. Unfortunately getting into these things would constitute spoilers. So I'll be vague:

the main romance is developed in a way that's unusual for a romance story, in my experience.

Furthermore the circumstances of the main character is done in an unusual way that's at first not very unique but still unusual. But later involves another thing that's a very unusual subversion

The ending revelation relating to the world-building and some people's motives were also a pleasant surprise, I've only seen that in one other cultivation story, a western one, which handled it in a different manner anyway. (Though I also don't read many cultivation stories, especially Chinese ones, as there's too many a**holes. But I really enjoyed this one)

I very much enjoy that an author took those ideas and executed them well in a story.

I also didn't expect it to get this sexy at times. Especially when she was still a snake early on. (Don't let that be a turn-off, moments of s*xual tension with the snake form are very rare and this story is very much worth a read).
Spoiler

I wonder how far the author would've gone if there were no concern for the Chinese website's censors (>//_//>)

[collapse]

This was only my second ever baihe novel (not counting the ones I'm mostly reading the manhua for instead, like Long-Awaited Feelings and White Moonlight Omega Always Wants To Possess Me) after The Dragon. I only ended up reading this one because the same people translated it so figured I should check it out as their translation is very good and they chose the Dragon earlier so they obviously know quality writing. The Dragon and this one are the only Chinese Xianxia i've read and enjoyed. Maybe the baihe authors just put less a**holes in their xianxia?

Overall I feel like The Dragon is a single step better. Just the one, though, I greatly enjoyed both. A lot.

This story has significantly more action to it. But where it falls short, imo, is that it has the world-building and the basis to construct a deeper narrative with deeper more complex characters, but it doesn't end up doing so. Instead the focus is more on the surface with our two main characters (and one or two others) and their relationship and thoughts, interspersed with (really quite good) battles. There's not much detailed intrigue and such. It feels like a simple, yet enjoyable, story.

Like the author had the foundation to shoot for the moon but instead took a pleasant mountain hike. And did it really well.

edit: oh I forgot two other events I had a problem with: 1. She picks up a particular plot relevant item randomly, but then that's common in these stories so I can overlook it really. 2. There's an ally that feels too deus ex machina-like. This character really should've been introduced earlier through rumours and such instead of out of the blue. The earlier the better.

For that reason 4-4.5 stars feels fair.

I would like a sequel, perhaps focusing on other characters. But I won't be surprised if we don't get one.

Below are my general thoughts after reading the ending, preserved (with spoiler). But my review is complete above, so if you've not read the story, stop reading here and maybe go read it and have a nice time.

Spoiler

The romance felt very very unusual in that it was one in which our main character seemed to fall in love faaaar after her love interest began falling for her, then it was later further compounded by her insecurity as a demon beast.

Usually, in the ones I've read, we follow the main character developing feelings but are left somewhat in the dark about the love interest's feelings. (Or perhaps we see them both fall for each other)

This was a really interesting reversal! To see Yuebai's feelings be even slightly romantic so early, and then grow deeper, when we've no real indications on the part of our main pov MC (beyond s*xual attraction) was a surprise. I even felt bad for Yuebai for most of this story. It's also interesting because for a lot of it, it's not like we can point at one of the couple and say "it's your fault!". Love doesn't work like that. Sometimes things are more one-sided, and it can suck, or not, but it is what it is. It was unusual for a romance story, and very cool to see.

I haven't read many cultivation stories, especially Chinese ones (as in those I've found usually there are so many selfish a**holes it's annoying).

The idea of spiritual essence being depleted with Ascensions and it being problematic, is that a common issue in these stories? I've only seen it once before, in a western cultivation webnovel called The Path to Ascension (where, like here, measures are taken to mitigate the issue, though atm it's not a 'solved' problem. But that story isn't complete, yet.). So I was really kind of impressed that the author brought it up in this one and very much enjoyed the twist that the Demonic Sect were the only ones addressing it selflessly in a kind of eco-terrorism 'they're kind of right but we can do better' way. Very cool.

I'm grateful this author took those refreshing ideas and did them well

Also, I was genuinely impressed by the author's ability to create s*xual tension (and, later, s*x scenes, while staying within the censor limits). Using things as simple as references to dresses and eye and skin and such to build up the air of s*xual tension between the two. (And the later flower references to get past censors haha

This is a decent series, but I'm planning to drop it because it just doesn't really click with me, so I'm only going to give some quick impressions.

Honestly, my main issue is the lack of direction or consistency. The MC is a modern reincarnator, yet if she was "just" an unusual snake demon instead, the plot wouldn't be impacted at all. Her background doesn't affect her personality at all, and her goals are already achieved by around ch40, which makes everything afterwards feel meandering and dragged out.

The romance is... pretty... more>> much what one would expect. A coquettish dense MC who doesn't realize that her flirting is having an effect on the FL, and a cold and taciturn FL who just can't spit it out and keeps getting into misunderstandings. Lots of miscommunication and (usually unintentional) flirting, some sweet moments, and while it's competently written, it also kind of undermines the setting. Despite this apparently being an ancient Chinese-style xianxia world, EVERY important female character seems to be flamboyantly gay, constantly flirting and pining after other girls, with the narration always waxing poetic about their milky white skin and ankles and wrists and waists and so on, and how flustered they get in each other's presence. It gets tiresome after a while.

As for the main character, I'm really not a fan of her. While it's supposed to be played for comedy, she's essentially a vain, gluttonous bootlicker who's constantly acting cute on purpose to exploit the goodwill (and horniness) of the women around her, and despite being 80+ years old, she's more often than not acting like a spastic child with ADHD, which is hard to relate to. The bigger problem is that even this isn't consistent, because there are multiple scenes where she acts selfless, or even self-sacrificing in the heat of the moment, which only makes the scenes where she's acting like the Chinese equivalent of a braindead valley-girl bimbo buying hundreds of dresses she'll never wear just because she can, and fluttering her eyelashes left and right to manipulate people in petty ways all the more infuriating.

Lastly, the thing that really made me consider dropping this was just the sheer amount of padding. There were so many times where I was feeling like the wheels were turning, but the story wasn't going anywhere, which is made worse by the number of repetitive chapters dedicated to the characters eating or shopping or engaging some trite conversation that neither moves the plot or the relationships forward, nor reveals anything new about the characters.

You might ask; if I'm so negative on this series, why do I give it 4/5 stars? Because, objectively speaking, it's not a bad series. I can see that, if someone's looking specifically for this kind of story, it would definitely scratch that itch for them, but I personally still don't like it. Like pineapple on pizza. It might be an amazing pizza, and I can recognize that, but when it comes to actually eating it... let's just say I have my reservations. <<less

It follows this little (but not rlly) cute snake who just wants to become human again to indulge in her past human pleasures. While cultivating to transform, she meets her wife when she's hurt. That's basically the first part. But, as we dive deeper into the novel, I felt as though the author was trying to string out the chapters and make unnecessary drama. I lost interest a bit during the last 20 chapters since it got confusing ngl.

But, the translator did warn us about it. They posted about how they loved the first half then they didn't really care about the second half which I now understand why.

All in all, I would say just check it out and read it. The FL basically is in love with her from the start without even knowing and it's a cute story with really good action scenes. The translator is amazing and deserves the views and compliments they receive. Thank you DragonTL~ <<less

3.5/5 The world building is amazing and I think this novel would be a great introduction for those who aren't familiar with xianxia. I like the main characters and side characters, but I didn't really Love them. I think one of the issues of this novel is that it's wayyy too long. The pacing differs and drags at some points with the same cultivation issues that it suffers from repetitiveness. If this is your first time reading a xianxia novel, this repetition is great so you can get familiar with... more>> the concept of cultivation; however, as someone who has been reading this genre for years, I got bored. As for the main characters, I got really exhausted at the end with the repeated relationship issues. I understand (and even enjoy!) slow burn relationships, but using the amnesia trope TWICE and in the same situation is really lazy and feels like fake tension. I recognize this is a good novel- the world building is rich and the dynamic between our main lesbian couple is interesting. That being said, I just can't get over how much padding and redundant scenes there are in this novel. Finishing it was such difficult mission that by the time I reached the final chapters I didn't really care!!! If the novel wasn't so dense, I would've rated this probably a 4? Would not re-read, but they're aren't many lesbian cultivation novels out there like this so I'll take what I can get. <<less

The story is quite good. The angst were manageable & not too heartwrenching compared to other novel with the same theme. I love the ending so much. It was good read 👍
