Zhou Weiying, who had suffered a disappointment in love, resolved to make a comeback in work. But he didn’t expect his old school friend c*m boss to conveniently throw him a hot potato: to be the manager of the well-known beauty influencer who had just returned to China, Fang Huan.

When Zhou Weiying received Fang Huan’s information, he was dumbfounded. When he saw Fang Huan in the flesh, he only wanted to turn on his heels and flee!

What the hell was this person with heavy make-up, weird and flamboyant dressing, coquettish poses and an affected, artificial manner?

Don't be fooled by the cutesy cover, it's a lot more realistic and gritty than it seems, but overall a very sweet story about loving yourself no matter what you look like. I had a really nice time reading this and was honestly surprised at how realistic the story was when both the cover and name gave off a more typical "OP MC sweeps the xxx industry and everyone loves them" vibe. Instead of smooth sailing, Fang Huan faces both set backs and prejudice that you would actually see in... more>> the real world, and neither FH or ZWY have over the top OP plot armor where they face no setbacks or problems whatsoever.

I think ZWY might get a bit of hate at the beginning of the story for disdaining FH for his flamboyance and later for a few fatphobic moments, but honestly I don't think he's entirely wrong. For all of FH's "Love yourself and live true to who you are" optimism, ZWY's views are much more traditional but valid. Why act flamboyantly and paint a target onto yourself when you could keep your head down and be safe from harm? Is it fair? No, but thats reality and not everyone can bear the scrutiny and hate that comes with standing out like FH can. His one off comment about Buta being too fat to be a beauty influencer is gross, but you have to remember he's a talent manager in the East Asian entertainment industry and his sentiments aren't exactly uncommon in the real world. Regardless both of them learn to trust and respect each other, and it's just really nice to see a couple actually have character growth rather than automatically being The Perfect Match™.

I keep mentioning realism because well, there's a lot in this story (while remaining in the realm of a happy story). I like that this story doesn't shy away with things like h*mophobia, how FH's flamboyance might not be accepted in Chinese society or even how ZWY is older than FH and the complications of a 10 year age difference (23 vs 33). ZWY doesn't magically solve everything for FH just because he's the older one, he makes mistakes and has embarrassing moments too. I also like that FH's straight friend Chu Xun doesn't turn gay and get paired off with his assistant just for the sake of having a side couple.

Overall I would give this a solid 4.5, as I think the last 20 chapters really dragged because it went from FH and ZWY's love story to FH's burgeoning makeup brand and the makeup production. There's also quite a bit of makeup application/FH talking about products and what not that I skimmed over (I've already served my time in beauty reviews/videos) and didn't lose much so if you have no interest you can skip past with no problems. Also, while the age gap between FH and ZWY is a bit big, sometimes people act like ZWY is 50 instead of 33.

Give it a shot and don't be scared by my review, it's not all doom and gloom. There's plenty of really sweet and funny moments, like FH getting upset that his assistant posted unedited pictures of him only to immediately cheer up when he finds out ZWY told her to post them cuz he thought FH already looked pretty without editing. My favorite bit is the running joke where ZWY keeps accidentally ruining or destroying FH's makeup/skincare products when he tries to help or apply stuff on FH. <<less

This novel is like Titanic, but there is no Jack and Rose and the main protagonists are the ship and the iceberg. At least the first half.

Fang Huan starts out like an exposed nerve that will react violently to the slightest touch. But he is also very kind, empathetic, vibrant and full of life.

Zhou Weiying - a callous workaholic who looks down on anyone who doesn't "know their place". But also mature, stable, capable and loyal.

... more>> They both wear away/heal each other's problems while polishing their own strengths.

I enjoyed seeing them change.

The way the story is written, it made me feel like they are indeed very suited to each other. I can't even explain it.

I think the novel's weakest point is the online drama with the other beauty blogger. I don't think every showbiz novel needs the "famous people are catfighting each other while the netizens verbally abuse MC before getting face-slapped" plot. This novel would have been better without it, IMO. I know that having setbacks is realistic. But what is the point of realism when 1000 novels use the same "realistic" plot? There could have been better setbacks.

Still, this one small thing doesn't lessen my enjoyment of this novel by much. A 4.5 rounded up, because I usually round up. <<less

There's a lot to really like about this novel. Pay little attention to the cover blurb, because this book is definitely not a piece of comedic fluff. Beyond the first few chapters, the overall tone feels gritty and real; the main characters are complicated, and not immediately likeable; and though the plot wraps itself around the world of influencers and makeup, the writer clearly has a lot of knowledge about both. And yet, I wish there was the option to give it a 4.4. I liked the book, but I... more>> didn't love it. <<less
