The countless dungeons that suddenly appeared on modern Earth have now become a part of everyday life.

Yuto Kurashiki, a young man who has become a hikikomori for some reason, challenges the dungeon to break through the dead end of his life. However, the unique skill given to Yuto was ironically “escape”. Not only is it difficult to use, but it also has a huge negative correction to the ability value, which is the lowest and worst failing skill.

However, Yuto soon finds out:

This skill has an outrageous potential.

I read some of this via MTL a while ago while on vacation.

The MC is someone who due to excessive bullying (which started by him sticking up for a girl being bullied) dropped out of school and became a hikikomori. Basically he could not take the bullying anymore and stopped going to school, the girl who he had stood up for got targeted again, and killed herself leaving a su*cide note blaming him, then because the school got him to drop out as that was easier to save face then... more>> going after the bully. So isolated from society in fact that he did not even notice that dungeons had become a reality.

The one real friend he had, who gives him some items to help when he is starting out venturing into dungeons, was unfortunately in a different school so unable to help with the issues there.

It is your standard loser outcast overcoming their horrible situation by abusing a loophole in the system of the world. Nothing too original, but a nice take on this type of growth and overcoming trauma.

Eventually he finds out about the dungeons and decided to try venturing into them to make something with his life. But gets (mostly) low stats the only skill he gets is escape, which is risky because he has to not fight back while the escape timer runs down.

The way the stories leveling system works there are basically 4 benefits to combat, Exp, Money, dropped items, and skill points. Using escape sets any Experience gains to 0, and costs him a percentage of money on hand (just like a lot of old RPG video games) and anything killed immediately re-spawns, but does not cost any skill points or other dropped items.

The loophole he ab*ses for power,
Spoiler

is that skill point awards are based on the level difference between you and the monster you kill, so others who tend to fight lower level mobs for safety tend to get very few, but him fighting nothing but higher level mobs can farm allot which gaining allows skills that provide stat boosts allowing him to fight higher level mobs. The result is the MC eventually becomes a overpowered walking pile of skills.

[collapse]

The bully who forced him to drop out of school,
Spoiler

she comes back in the 2nd arc as a villain. She is not much better then in school, running an adventurer guild like a black company, abusing her workers and leaving a trail of corpses behind her. But revenge will be had.

[collapse]

It is an interesting story, but you need to understand Japanese society, how prevalent and bad bullying can get over there, and well as the damage caused what they call Black Companies, as these are core to what is going on, and the MC is dealing withy, in the first couple arcs. <<less

Story plot is ok. Not something special, nor something bad.

Might not be for everyone as the protagonist personality has been greatly damaged due to bullying in school and guilt over causing the death of someone he tried to save. If you can't deal with that kind of stuff that can suddenly happen or trigger his trauma, breaking the mood of the story, then better avoid it.

What I despise about this story is how the events related to love are handled.

Spoiler

The protagonist basically gets engaged after a few days he leaves his house to start exploring the dungeons. Not only that, he is so indecisive about the prospect of marriage that the girls in question have to decide for him.

[collapse]

I don't know if this hate of mine is due to the fact that the author wrote these events poorly, the trope is so overused I am sick of it, or because the protagonist acts like a beta that turns into a doormat.

Regardless, I am dropping this. <<less

I don't hate it (yet), but I'm starting to now that he seems to be starting a quasi-harem, not sure yet if he will.

But I am confused... either the MC is living COMPLETELY under a rock or the author is forgetting his original setting...

Spoiler

He starts out saying that the MC didn't even know dungeons existed... but suddenly his parents are suggesting he go... Which considering that they are potentially deadly, does not make a lot of sense.

But, OK fine.

    • The MC then goes on about how dungeon explorers stormed the capital building and demanded a change in the tax law.
    • Then, his childhood/school friend (who is of course a beautiful/powerful woman now) says that dungeons have been around for years now.
    • Then, there are dedicated stores for dungeon equipment.
    • There is some marvelously detailed 'wiki' dedicated to dungeons and explorers
    • etc...

So, I'm going to have to go with ignoring the original premise, or just presume that he was in a coma. Because there is no way I can presume that a 'gamer' would not have heard about it for YEARS if it was real life.

Its fine, its nothing special but its fine.

But to the guy that reviewed before mw (dragonulera), if the relationship was what you dropped it for then you gave up slightly too early. As of where I am he's very firmly embraced his monogamous feelings for First Girl and has moved on to make it clear to the elf mother and daughter that he's in love and super monogamous, not giving any room for it and even making it outright clear he himself dislikes the idea of polygamy.

So yeah, if the... more>> reason you left was because 'indecisive MC' he's not that for long.

He is though, for the most part, a stereotypical jap MC with nothing particularly special about him though outside of the very firm monogamous preference and early rejection of potential harem.

I can't say I recommend this novel, can't warn people away from it either, its just... there, Average Score 3/5. <<less

At first it was great, a fun read, a good one to pass the time, but after chapter where he ended the dungeon collapse, it got so boring with the parallel world travel fiasco.

First read MTL version some time ago. But MTL is MTL, it's left some confusing backstory. So glad finding out there is a good translation for this one.

Also found out there is a manga version, but not like it very much because the artist give MC to many unnecessary pose and facial expresion. Make him look like an idiot. The drawing is good, but its just the pose that's so f cringy. (Well, it's just my opinion. You guys might like it)

The MC is transfering to a new world... more>> that is have almost the same timeline and history with MC past world, but it also have a very big different thing. That is that this world have dungeons.

This new world already settle with the dungeons and it become a normal thing now. This make MC is struggle to make sense his situation at first.

MC is someone that have a very sad past. But you can make sense of it because the premise is possible (Not that I know this happen in real life). MC mental strenght is grow in good pace, along with the story. And yes, MC personality is typical Japanese MC when it's coming to woman.

Because his depresion he turn hikky, and the MC just stay in his room without realising that he already transfer to a new world.

Spoiler

Later he found our that his entire room become a dungeon. And because of that his room is transfer to the current world with him in it.

[collapse]

So far the story is interesting, it's Japanese novel so you'll find the characters and storyline is a bit Japanese mainstream. But the Author have so many good idea and interesting perperspective. Like MC power and how to exploit it.

So, I think this novel deserve a try, if you want story with good pace and intersting world building. It have it's flaw, but it's still a good read. <<less

This is a tough one to rate. Some of the things are decently interesting but the skill and numerical inflation is insane, the characters honestly aren't very well fleshed out and the whole bullying stuff is tiresome to read, but what was even more tiresome is the latest arc. From like 108-156 I had zero interest and skimmed the chapter names, no investment in what goes on in that sort of situation, it seems entirely skippable? Like just delete the whole section and it doesn't even matter. There's a harem... more>> tag but basically zero romance, a coffee date between 30-year olds at best. <<less
