Transmigrated Into A Tragic Romance Fantasy

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

I was curious about what a female-oriented tragic romantic fantasy was like, so I skimmed through only the free chapters.

And then…

“…Ha.”

I found myself transmigrated into one of the main male characters, destined for tears of regret, exhaustion, and obsession.

So, the first thing that had to be done was…

“I, Elden Raphelion, hereby declare my withdrawal from the competition for the betrothal of the Third Northern Duchess.”

To escape this tragedy.

Star Rating: 4/5

  1. Did not finish, do not recommend
  2. Didn't like it for several reasons
  3. Okay, satisfactory
  4. Pretty good read
  5. This is going on my lifetime favorites
Setting: 3/5

  • This is a classic transmigration into villain story, where we follow the MC try to avoid what he believes to be a dangerous route - the FMC brought 4 of her school bullies into her marriage competition to get revenge on them.
  • I think the
    Spoiler

    dark magic

    [collapse]
stuff was not really well established, and I didn't really feel like the true impact of what was about to happen was really conveyed properly.
  • Overall, kind of average in terms of world building. The politics wasn't really explained much either and everything related to the academy and ducal house was wishy-washy, but there wasn't anything incongruent, 3/5.
Main Characters: 2/5

  • The main character, Elden Raphelion, spends the first half of the story avoiding any responsibility of the actions the previous owner of his body took, crying out that it's unjust that he pay for crimes he didn't commit. In my opinion, he starts the story quite immature, though I can't say I wouldn't make similar decisions if I were in his place. Throughout the story, he grows as a person and tries his best to show the people around him how he matures, and I think that though it was a bit clumsy in execution, he properly redeems himself by the end of the story in my eyes.
  • The main side characters involve the main heroine that gets wronged, the three other bullies, his knight, and a young bookworm that he makes friends with. I think the whole cast of side characters is quite immature and they act like caricatures, though that might be justified by the idea that this story is originally a story within a story.
  • Lumia, the main heroine, goes to school despite being heavily advised against doing so, gets bullied for three years without telling anyone because she doesn't want to show that she was wrong, and then sets up a ridiculous revenge party.
    Spoiler

She gets upset that Elden acts like he has reformed, chases him because of her bruised pride, becomes a damsel in distress, and falls in love with Elden after he saves her.

    [collapse]
  • Rachel, Elden's knight, grows up avoiding her feminine side to become a knight in a very misogynistic society and becomes a cold and hardened knight, gets harrassed by Elden for years, gets treated well by him for a while and loses all of her conviction against misogyny, and gets lovey-dovey with him like a school girl.
  • Ariel, a bookworm Elden becomes friends with, acts like a young child in love for most of the story.
  • Lumia's father is also a piece of work. He decided that his family honor was worth more than his daughter's health and livelihood, and I was not a big fan of him.
  • I think this story is about change, but the change in character for these side characters felt too abrupt or awkward.
  • Overall, the characters work, but they're not that interesting and their character growth doesn't sit well with me, 2/5.
Plot/Pacing: 4/5

  • The pacing was nice and the events led to each other pretty smoothly. The timeskip felt a bit abrupt, but given the nature of the story, I understand why it happened. If the events during the timeskip were properly covered, the main story would have been delayed for too long. I just wish that the author added extra side stories to show what happened during the timeskip.
  • The plot was pretty predictable, it was relatively obvious how the whole story was going to play out
    Spoiler

Lumia eventually joining the group as a chef, the other three bullies getting killed off, etc.

    [collapse]
  • Overall, pacing is great but predictable, 4/5.
Overall Writing: 3/5

  • I think the author could have embellished some of the details more, there were a few things that didn't feel very well fleshed out. For example, we're constantly told that she was bullied a lot and given a few details, but I didn't feel like I had enough detail on what happened at school to truly sympathize with Lumia. I wish the author expanded on the bullying more because the scale of revenge that Lumia was trying to perform felt a bit empty without being able to understand the emotions behind her outrage. I also didn't really understand what the curse on Lumia was, to be honest.
  • Overall, could have been better, 3/5.
Enjoyability Factor: 4/5

  • I think MC and Lumia kind of pissed me off in the beginning of the story, and I didn't like how Rachel changed later in the story but it was still a good read, 4/5.

All those s*upid weirdos who have rated without having read FULLY or trying to understand the meaning of "psychological" tag are hopeless. (though it just tells how good it is because people can get frustrated especiall b/w chap 53-68.. chap 69 is reunion)

You know @shinyblack2 why MC went on and didn't try to help the Female Lead Lumia.. well if you even tried to understand his point you would see where he is coming from but but but just read chapter 87-88-89 damn the actual regret, reason, sorrow... more>> and the wholesome moment we get is worth all it. It just shows how two people in misfortune can sometime get obssessed with their own things. He was obsessed with wanting to not have a part when he did nothing.

And those saying "he doesn't even try to hide the sudden change" well that's the plan in more than one ways too. (you can think of it as all too abrupt but who besides his close one would know it was extremely abrupt + he said he "REALIZED" himself unworthy "so from now on" he would change in a way.)

JUST READ IT GUYS, the reason he wants to withdraw is because The duchess wants revenge so he is said tragic RoFan and her will is more than justified but due to the happenings it ruins her mental state in more than one ways.. though IT's worth it as said because of chap 87-88-89

SIDE CHARACTERS ARE WELL WRITTEN, LIKE EACH AND EVERYONE... everything is natural and understandable. <<less

This novel makes no sense. The MC is in this competition for the betrothal but he doesn't want o be in it because he knows the truth behind it. He even explained why he didn't want to be in it that he didn't want to use his knowledge of the book to somehow "win". Yet after he declares his withdrawal, he doesn't just get up and leave? He still continues? Why? The author makes no attempt at an explanation. The competition is voluntary, why would you need permission to withdraw?... more>> And even if you are waiting for permission, why participate? Make up an excuse and stay put.

You can make the argument that his host is a higher ranking noble so if he suddenly up and leaves, he would be offending them? But that's not how feudalism works. High ranking nobles doesn't have that much sway over lower ranking ones, especially if the lesser noble isn't a direct vassal. And if feudalism works different in this novel, it's on the author to explain it.

Honestly this makes the novel unreadable for me, it makes the premise seems flimsy and the author uneducated about his setting. <<less

What this has achieved in merely 2 chapters is what the average novel hopes to achieve in its first 10 chapters. The hook on this novel is spectacular. With only 1 chapter it made me interested in the MC and what he is going to do in the future and the overall world aswell. I feel like this novel has a lot to offer, so I am anticipant about it.

Lemme start by saying this novel is excellent, although it's not a fast-paced one. The author here takes his time developing his characters, mainly the MC - Elden Raphelion and Lumia.

The way he writes Lumia's decent to madness and her growing obsession that would lead to the 'Tragic Romance Fantasy' is amazing, and it's interesting because Lumia is deff not a Mary Sue, and the people around her notice her changes.

Another funny thing is that the author really does a spin on the 'I've Transmigrated as a character from a... more>> novel thing'. The MC won't pretend to be Elden, while also not trying to 'Repent' from his past mistakes, he's legit just a simple overworked Salaryman who is trying to live. His personality doesn't change, nor has he suddenly discovered an obsession with reaching the 'peak' as other novels do, the dude is just trying to live his life. And the interactions he has with the people are hilarious.

The other Female leads also steal the scene, as they get quite a bit of screen time. All in All, while the novel is deff not fast-paced, and most could even call it slow, it's an enjoyable read, I recommend it. <<less

RANT INCOMING; you can read the first paragraph to get a summary (tl;dr) of what I want to say. Don't listen to the other reviews; I rarely ever review because I know most of these stories are meant to "turn your brain off" popcorn stuff. BUT DAMN this story pisses me off.

The Author has no idea what he wants with this story; in summary? It's the story about the female lead of the novel being screwed over and mentally being tortured with AT EVERY opportunity while the MC is completely... more>> indifferent to her suffering. It literally feels like reading torture p*rn. At some point the MC just up and abandons her to her tragic fate of pain and suffering and everyone just forgets about her but the author keeps reminding her how she still exists in suffering. Maybe it's the author's fetish? I don't know but it's a very strange story.

As for the Terrible writing regarding the MC:

Spoiler

The MC's reasoning behind not helping the female lead is that since he's not the original jackass who bullied and tortured the female lead therefore he has no obligation to help her. Which is such pathetic reasoning because there are lots of situations where no one is at fault but someone has to be the bigger person and solve the issue but in this case the MC expects the physically tortured, mentally ill and depressed woman to just "get over it" just because he's said sorry? Like excuse WTF what kind of self righteous idiot are you. This story is literally analogous to watching a person drown and even though you have the ability to swim you ignore the person because you have no obligation to help them; that's logically correct but no sane person would actually support you

[collapse]

I wouldn't even hate the story so much if the author DIDNT KEEP JUSTIFIYING the MC's actions like he's the good guy here.

Finally is this supposed to be a tragedy? Because the author doesn't know how to write one. There are two types of tragedies, one where no matter what the characters do bad things are fated and destined to happen but this story clearly shows how the MC's actions have caused more suffering for the female lead so it can't be it. The second type of tragedy is where the characters due to their flawed human nature cause all sorts of suffering they could have avoided but in this type of tragedy YOU NEVER JUSTIFY the characters actions as good which the author keeps doing with the MC.

Just I'm baffled that people actually like this; I rarely get emotional over fiction but like at some point seeing the female lead suffer AGAIN AND AGAIN you wonder like what's the point here? Like what is the author's message? Abandon people in suffering to enjoy your life? I sincerely hope this author is just a terrible writer and he doesn't really believe in the message of the story because it's outright evil. <<less

A bland novel that plays its tropes straight. "Villain" who undergoes a severe personality shift courtesy of a transmigrator, and makes no attempt to hide his new personality, thus bringing unwanted attention from literally everyone to himself (despite saying how he doesn't want to draw attention) ? Check. Copy-paste scenarios of each side character going "Eh? Who's this person that's completely different?", followed by "How interesting..."? Check. Our MC has the personality of wet cardboard? Check. Our MC doesn't actually make any effort to escape his The Bachelor situation despite... more>> saying how he totally can escape whenever he wants to (he just doesn't feel like it right now, okay) ? Check.

This feels like it was written by a chatbot (and the novel cover looks like it was generated by one too). If you rated this highly, your standards must be rock bottom. <<less

I rarely comment without completing, but one low ranking review is clearly unfair and overly radical in its interpretation: while higher ranking nobles certainly don't necessarily hold direct sway over non-vassals, most people will not go out of their way to insult a host---as departing when they wish you to remain would---if there is no pressing urgency to leave. To put it crudely: if e.g., you are at an acquaintance's birthday party, you don't say 'I am bored so I am f*cking off now' and then leave, instead you suggest... more>> that unfortunately something has come up so you hope they understand that you have to leave. Then if they are being reasonable you leave after they say 'I understand'. If they are unreasonable and moreover you know why they might want to be unreasonable, you might well stay a little longer...

To put it another way: from the perspective of polite discourse, the main character has already conveyed the key message by 1) expressing his intention to depart and 2) tactfully expressing regret as to his previous actions (in fact the actions of the character before transmigration). The failure of the female lead of the original story to accept this result is an expression of the fact that she has already passed the state of polite discourse and naturally sets up the subsequent developments as revealed in the chapters approaching 57.
Spoiler

In particular it shows that she is intent on getting more than a tactful apology from the protagonist for the previous character's actions---be it revenge or a sincere apology---and as a salaryman he probably feels like it is easier to wait, possibly putting up with a little suffering, until she gives up or gets bored, rather than infuriate her further by running away from the situation. However as a reasonable individual he has no intent to cater to her little revenge farce, particularly when he is not actually the guilty party. The fact that things continue to get further out of hand is a) an expression of the fact that the female lead is a spoilt princess and b) a design of the author that is consistent with the widespread taste for obsessive regretful heroines. Hopefully we agree that the latter is a slightly implausible character set-up and that most of the lack of naturality follows from there.

[collapse]

So far this one is actually quite promising. The main problem at the moment is that it feels like there is a clear lead heroine, and given her circumstances the transformation into an obsessive regretful harem member seems a little forced.
Spoiler

That is the development of the original novel---a kind of mutual redemption flow---feels more natural than the excessive regret she is currently feeling: what she has done as of chapter 57 is rather petty but not really so unforgivable, especially given the perceived past history. Of course she has lost face for her house, but this should hardly be a severe point of condemnation from either the perspective of a romance or harem novel.

This is a common plot saddled with an unreasonable premise. This is a serviceable "transmigrated into a villain" story, as long as the reader does not think about the characters or their motivations too much

First, a story should be "reasonable". EG, if a story is set in a modern, contemporaneous world, it would be strange if people run around shooting fireballs at dragons. If this does happen, there should be an in-universe explanation for why this happens: a mysterious tower appears. People should also have reasonable emotional responses that drive... more>> their actions. EG, the main character loses her family in a monster attack. She studies the blade to kill all monsters. It would be strange if she turns into a mu*der hobo and starts killing the townspeople. If this happen, there should be an in-universe explanation: the town used her family as monster decoy.

So: TITRF opens with the main character transmigrated into the villain. He, along with three others, are in the final rounds of a competition to marry the future duchess. We later learn who the duchess is, and why these four has made it through the competition so far.

Spoiler

The duchess attended an academy in disguise, and was ab*sed and bullied by the four contestants. She has staged this competition as payback: she puts the four through trials to make them feel the shame and hurt she suffered at their hands in the academy.

[collapse]

This setup does not make any sense. The condition of the contest is she has to marry one of these four people. Does this seem reasonable? The author provides no explanation for why she would be willing to do this.

Spoiler

The author goes further to show she still has nightmares about the past ab*se, and suffers from what seems to be PTSD. And she's going to marry one of her ab*sers? Why?

[collapse]

This premise is the root of the story, drives the action, and shapes how the story develops. But it does not make any sense. I constantly face-palm myself and ask, why? On some level, the author seems to be aware that the story does not make any sense, as well.

Spoiler

The duchess has an "advisor" who tries to unravel why this is happening, and tries to make sense of the facts as he sees it.

[collapse]

I'm willing to hand-wave away incidental details of a story, but this is the core of the story. Everything else that happens around it just feels pointless. <<less

If you stick past the first plot event (s) it's pretty good, but the novel somewhat suffers from two dimensional antagonists. I also wish this wasn't a purely romance setting based story as it could've been expanded upon and been a better novel like "tr*sh Of The Counts Family". With its current pace, it seems it will fall off after the first arc is completed. As it seems most of the good points of the novel is just the starting premise, which I wouldn't be surprised if it was also... more>> copied and revamped from other novels the author liked, as the base setting and plot trend afterwards seems to suffer from the lack of creative flur.

The character interactions so far have been great, other than the antagonist trio, who again, are 2d and only there to force the plot and fill up word count. My favorite character is by far the butler. I only wish his name was also the legendary Sebastián...

I do wish to note, although it is a fun interesting read, you do have to give a white eye towards some premise plotholes.

For one, why doesn't the MC simply leave after declaring the withdrawal? Another reviewie LoneDK argued that the MC being a lower position noble than the latter, doesn't wish to offend them. And stated that this is simply not how feudalism works. However... they misleading didn't mention how he is from a ruined nobles house, and the latter's rank is right under the king. His review was a 1 star... so unsurprising its filled with stubborn bias tbh. But nevertheless, it is still a plothole u need to side eye to enjoy the story.

For my take, I'd argue the MC is simply being cautious, and freeloading as he gets a bit stronger. He just got transported to another world, why try to unnecessarily make more enemies? It's not like he has a safe place to get back to anyways, his house was ruined, which is why the original scoundrel signed up to be the duchess bride. Though we all know it's just meaningless plot armor

Yet as I state earlier, I sincerely hope this moves past the romance trope and enters into TCF grade story material after the first arc. But I doubt this happening more now, after a new FL romance character seems to be introduced... At least it's not self imploding harem, or not yet at least.

There have yet to be any mentions of powerful characters / terrorist antagonist events to be wary of yet within the 17 chaps read, other than the main FL which I wouldn't really consider to be the main villain... and the MC's guard Rachel. So future ark potential looks bleak

(I got here because of action/adventure/fantasy tags but the two former ones were removed... but I stuck cause it was interesting.) <<less

1* reviews lied and skip a lot of subtle hints and content in the story. Thanks god I decide to give this story a chance.

Spoiler

MC has a reason why he doesn't just leave. It isn't simple because he is "s*upid/simpleminded". It's literally social su*cide on a medieval world not to mention this is a competition in which NO ONE has EVER decide to just give up. MC literally gives 0 f about trying to "act as the old him".

Female lead suffering from her memories and MC not caring is a lie. Because for one, MC truly doesn't care for the original plot of the story moreso because he took the place of one of the ab*sers. He isn't the ab*ser. He KNOWS why she choose the four participants in this competition in specific, he knows what each day "punishment" means. He knows the plot and knows that it IS a tragedy he doesn't want to be a part of. Because that is what the original plot was, a tragedy. Very early on when the competition starts we learn that that there is a "reason" and "purpose" beyond just marriage. Female lead suffering is mostly her agonizing on MC's change because of her vengance plot for him AND it is ALL mental, MC isn't a mind reader and we KNOW he is TRYING to see from her point of view but fails slightly because he is thinking on her reacting the old him, the ab*ser, not the him now. So all his moves made her THINK different and act different towards him which he obviously doesn't expect just from the first interactions this happen.

On chapter 32 we get three lines that sum it perfectly. How he isn't the sinner, how he doesn't care about this competition, doesn't care for her attention, this is her revenge and he just doesn't want to be a part of this even if he understand. Why he will not try to participate, why he wouldn't try to help her or try to be kind to her.

For example: one of the reviews pointed out that the MC after showing his will to abstain from the bethroal didnt leave.

A refreshing novel.

MC is the "don't mind me, Just doing my own thing" type of guy.

He doesn't care that he's been transmigrated into a novel or anything else, his reactions was "oh". He's so cold and dead that it's amusing.

... more>> MC only had one goal since the first chapters, eat exotic food.

He doesn't care about romance or heroines or any of the sort.

He's not a bad guy, he just can't be bothered.

The characters are enjoyable to read, and the story has a nice progression.

This novel is good to pass time on something light. <<less

Still no hook till free chap, there are no urgency for MC, maybe he will die for 5 days if he didnt withdraw, I think its imposible that the duke daughter will kill 4 noble openly, I still dont know what MC wanted to do from now on, doing a carefree life, or hunting delicacy food in other world, or making money since the is a wealthy tag. No action, I expexted the were some action when I saw magic, magic beast tag, well there were no action tag, thats,... more>> explain why. I didnt see any drama, I didnt see any comedy, at least that made me laugh, I smell a bit romance from the duke daughter, maybe wait until 50-100 until you can see some romance. It's sort of early to judge this story but the writing and translation seem well done and more importantly it feels like it's going in a very different direction than your typical reincarnated as a minor villain story. A well written and translated story with an deep well of interesting ideas. Unfortunately, its weighed down with a couple critical flaws.

To start, the story seems to be split between a typical "reincarnated as a villain" and a tragic revenge. While it's not impossible to blend the two together, the author doesn't seem to have attempted it at all. The reincarnated villain side plays out light hearted only to be loosely tied to a more serious tale of ab*se and revenge. There's a strong disconnect as neither side seems willing... more>> to match the other in tone.

Next is the leading heroine, who's motivation is nearly incomprehensible. Even now, while I know her overall goal, the finer points of the plan feel like "insert revenge plot here". This becomes a serious problem when you realize that her motivation is the core driving force of this story.

Ultimately I am going to stop reading here. While there are many points about the story I enjoy, the faults are too much for me to want to continue. <<less

SUPER GOOD STORY, RECOMMENDED.

I don't understand the other reviews.

This is just a story, no need to try and read deep between the lines, there's nothing there.

You can't and shouldn't try to understand everything with a rational mind if the story is based in a fantasy world where magic reigns and knights roam. Most of the problems are explained with an abstract layer. So as readers, we can and should use a bit of our imagination to feel this abstraction (or let it go as if everything that was happing was... more>> logical and rational).

It's in a fantasy world. So let the magic do its thing <<less

The novel itself doesn't break new ground with its concept, and some might find it on the shorter side, but I personally found it deeply enjoyable. The translation was, as per usual with genesis, solid.

To be frank, novels on this website often tend to lean towards lower quality reading material when compared to traditional books. This isn't necessarily because of the stories they tell, or even the translation, but rather how they execute them. A good story should have three essential parts: a beginning for world-building, a middle for character... more>> development and conflict, and a conclusion to tie things off.

While I can't deny that this story had its flaws, it did manage to meet these three criteria. Unlike many works on this site—some of which stretch to 700+ chapters with poorly translated walls of text, rife with character drift and artificial conflict designed to drag the readers along as long as humanly possible—this novel knew when to stop. It resolved its main conflict and left the aftermath open-ended, especially with regard to the romance and the characters' ongoing adventures.

That open-endedness may not appeal to everyone, but personally, I appreciated it. Sure, some might argue it's a cop-out for an author unsure of how to tie everything off neatly, but ultimately, it's still a story. Stories don't always need to have every thread neatly tied; sometimes, leaving things unresolved can feel more fulfilling by allowing the reader to ponder what comes next. <<less

This novel has no important goal in the story compared to other transmigrated stories so it just feels like a slice of life, which isn't a problem. The problem is that almost all of the characters are boring and doesn't create any entertaining interactions with each other.

I say almost all because the thought process and character of the tragic heroine (the duchess) is interesting. She is an eager learner with such a logical way of thinking that the only reason her plans are failing is because it is impossible to... more>> deduce that the MC took over the body of one her revenge targets out of nowhere. Reading about the conclusions she is reaching in regards to the MC's sudden change using only the information she can access and the actions she takes in response to that is fun. Then there is the situation in how she suffered tremendously in the hands of the 4 revenge targets which blurs her purpose of whether her plan is for them to repent or just satisfy her thirst for revenge. It's like her sense of morality, emotions and logical thinking can't balance itself so her actions and purpose are a mess, leading to her seeming like a hypocrite. I'm looking forward to see whether she develops for the worse or will actually manage to fix herself.

Unfortunately, the other characters are just so damn boring including the MC. MC is just a regular guy whose only solution to every problem is stay away from it as much as possible, which is funny at first but starts to get annoying. The reader girl is the typical heroine that has a unique hobby that only the MC can relate to. As for MC's female guarding knight, I could barely remember much about her other than she teaches MC how to fight. While the other 3 revenge targets are just the regular third rate villains.

Maybe I'll check this out again after there are enough chapters after the betrothal competition to see if there any interesting developments but for now, one good character in a bland story is not enough for me to continually enjoy reading this. <<less

Honestly a refreshing and well-written novel, perfect for readers fed up with the cliche reincarnation plot. It is a bit iffy in some areas like the original character's motives and character since the novel continuously tries to establish the fact that although she was mistreated due to the male villains in the academy (Elden included) it seems to say she doesn't mind it much and only wanted revenge to teach them a lesson. (She wouldn't have gone out of her way for revenge or even told her father about it... more>> who is a Grand Duke and could easily eliminate their entire noble families.)

Then again, it also helps to build a bit of suspense and give Elden the notion that he'll be fine as long as he stays away from her (successfully withdraws). The only real complaint I have is with the 2Dness of the villains other than Elden, but than again I have only read less than 20 chapters. <<less
