Shortly after Lu Xun creates an alternate account in ‘Heavenly Earth,’ he transmigrates into this Xianxia style game and becomes a glorious NPC.

He discovers that he has transmigrated to a time three years into the past. He originally plans to accumulate his strength and bide his time while idiotic players appeared in copious numbers.

Planning to issue quests to them so that they would be of use to him, he never expects that he would encounter difficulties from the get-go.

Now, the very first problem he has to face is… a ‘female devil’ who can’t be easily described in a few words…

“There’s something wrong with this account!” Lu Xun exclaims.

TLDR: Funnier version of The Legendary Mechanic.

Also, the author's other novel got adapted to a manhua recently called "Keep a Low Profile, Sect Leader." It has similar vibes to this novel so I'd recommend reading it if you are on the fence.

I remember reading this novel MTL a long time ago, and while I don't remember everything about it, I do remember enjoying it a lot as it managed the scratch the itch that The Legendary Mechanic left me with. The novel has much better comedy compared to The Legendary... more>> Mechanic and while I'm not really sure if all of the jokes managed to get translated correctly, know that there were A LOT of sex-related jokes (the author is known for making so many s*xual jokes in his novels that half of his novels get labeled as "p*rnography" and get canceled in China), so be careful if you don't like those kinds of jokes (I liked them and found them funny).

The novel is another NPC in a game world so I will be comparing it to the Legendary Mechanic in this review:

Better:

    • better comedy
    • no nationalism (basically no repeated China numba 1 at games or some sh*t like in the Legendary Mechanic)
    • an actual harem and not some weird relationship where the author makes the readers attached to characters like Hila early on in the novel only for them to never make any progress
Worse/Similar:

    • Rushed ending (but was supposedly "intended" by the author)
    • some characters weren't able to keep up with the plot and became useless later on
Honestly, all I can say is that you'll probably love this novel if you liked the Legendary mechanic and dislike this novel if you didn't like Legendary Mechanic. <<less

It's nothing amazing, but not terrible either. By chapter 60 its still far too early to tell whether this novel is good or not because barely anything has happened. This novel suffers from unnecessary infodumps which occur too often, which also means that the pace of the novel is unbearably slow even for Chinese webnovel standards. There are some good comedic moments in this novel.

Because of the inevitable comparisons between this and The Legendary Mechanic (TLM), I'll make this review comparing the two. Just be aware that I'm at chapter 58 of this novel, and chapter 35 of TLM as of writing this review, so my thoughts might not be reflective of future chapters in both stories.

First off, if people come into this wanting a second TLM, they will be sorely disappointed. While TLM treats its story like an RPG, with the MC minmaxing stats, grinding quests, and exploiting game mechanics like blueprint gachas... more>> to get ahead, There's Something Wrong with this Account (TSWA) instead takes a more RP (role-play) approach. What I mean is, while in TLM the system and game mechanics are the forefront of the story, in TSWA the system, game elements and such take a backseat to world building, character development and interactions.

In addition, TLM seems to suffer from the "young master syndrome" trope, with as of chapter 35 at least four relatively significant characters are actively malicious towards the MC for almost no reason whatsoever, often being so mindlessly antagonistic that it comes to bite them in the ass. However, TSWA takes a more refreshing approach, with the named characters having a more relaxed "if you don't harm me, I won't hurt you, and if I can help you at little cost to myself, I'll just do it because that's a good thing to do" mindset. Not only is this very different to most Chinese xianxia novels, it also makes all the characters instantly more likeable than most novels as well.

One comment I saw in a chapter highlighted this for me. A reader in TSWA expected something like TLM where the MC will power level into an unkillable badass and was disappointed at the slower pace of the story. This seems to completely ignore the world building and MC motivations that perfectly explain why he doesn't act like the MC of TLM.

Thus, if I have to give only a single point of recommendation, it's that you should not read this expecting the action and game elements of TLM, instead expect a slower paced story focused on world building and character relationships.

Now, some more review focused solely on TSWA:

  • Like another review said, there are a lot of Adult jokes in this novel, however it is much more masterfully woven into the writing and surprisingly tasteful compared to other novels that try to fire off an inappropriate joke very two sentences. Often times, it just feels like a unique quirk of the writer and makes this work all the more unique because of it.
  • In addition, the author knows when to separate inappropriateness and seriousness. As an example,
    Spoiler

there is a stereotypical scene of the MC getting to headpat a cat girl. However, unlike other novels where he does it on a whim and the girl reacts in a very NSFW way, in this, there is a build up leading up to the moment showing that the MC clearly respects the girl's boundaries and their relationship, and the moment is treated with more seriousness than what the abundant s*x jokes will make you think will happen. He also does it not out of a whim, but following the girl revealing her entire family has been eradicated, he does it as a way to distract her from the grief, which I found worked surprisingly well

    [collapse]
  • I agree that the story feels incredibly slow (as of chapter 58, nothing really significant has happened yet), however it's clear that the author is trying to establish a solid worldbuilding so that you feel more attached to the world and the characters, so go into this not expecting lots of action or a power fantasy.
  • If I have to criticize anything, its that the chapters feel incredibly short as a result of the worldbuilding filling each chapter up, and that makes it incredibly unsatisfying to read up to chapter 60 with little to no pay off and the translation stopping right there
TLDR: Great read for people who enjoy world building, character relationships and three dimensional characters who don't fall into typical harem clichés. There are a lot of adult jokes, but IMO they are woven into the story really naturally. Don't go into this expecting The Legendary Mechanic style quest grinding, power levelling, face slapping and lots of action. <<less

There's Something Wrong With This MC.

  1. Hear no footstep sound before door knocking=cultivator. ?? How could he so sure about that when he ONLY a gamer
  2. Want to turn MC into a Furnace Tripod = NICE girl. ?? WTF. It seem all girl is nice if she has a cute face.
  3. lots other small illogical things like above.
If you could stomach above, it might be a good read for you.
