UPDATE (c93) :

I'm dropping this for a multitude of reasons. Mainly because it's boring.

  1. The repetition. Every chapter is made up of descriptions of abilities or items or some other such. He's got so many abilities now that it doesn't even fit on a page, and more are added every chapter. Every level is basically just grinding. That's the best word to describe it.
  2. There is no risk involved. No tension, no stakes nothing. It's boring. Ever after the first couple of levels there has not been a life-or-death moment. I know you can't really have life-or-death moments in flashbacks, but you can still make it seem like the MC is struggling with his life on the line. For all the levels past the first few this feeling is entirely lacking. He is just grinding for levels. There's no sense of danger.
  3. The lack of focus. The MC isn't trying to achieve some quest (e.g kill the demon king) like the MC in MC Hides His Strength. The MC here is literally just grinding away to achieve superhuman status. What's there for him to even do? He's already the strongest human and yet the Gods won't let him out of the tutorial because of bullsh*t rules. So he's just stuck here grinding away until he's strong enough to beat it. Yes, it is as boring as it sounds.
  4. Failed characterization. At first I thought there might be some interesting relationships, but I was wrong. It's like Seoul Station's Necromancer where the MC's overwhelming strength dominates everyone and everyone is basically in awe of him and nothing more than his lapdogs.
I could go on but there's really no point. This novel has gotten to Re:Monster-tier of boring. It's actually amazing that it sustained my interest for this long. Old review:
Spoiler

EDIT: Actually having looked at the chapter titles in Korean it does look like each individual Hell Level (from 1-60) is going to be described IN DEPTH (3-8 chapters per level, so maybe 300-500 chapters in total just flashbacks). I hope new people will be introduced each level or it would get boring fast. But the fact that he had to wait this long for a newbie at level 60 probably means there will be fewer and fewer people later on. And since none of them survived to level 60 it means any emotional investment in them is wasted as well, so I don't see a way for this to get much better actually. We'll see how the author plays it, but I don't have much hope that it'll get better.

======================REVIEW AT CHAPTER 13==========================

Pretty good so far. The start was amazing, but it got slightly tedious when describing Level 1 of Hell (I feel it spent too many chapters on that).

>"Life is a series of choices."

>A phrase I once read in 3rd year of highschool.

>Life truly is a series of choices.

>But what the f*ck am I supposed to do about it?

>That phrase hasn't helped in any way for me to make better decisions on improving my life.

>Lastly are the misfortunate. For example, those who were summoned while riding a rollercoaster. Those who pressed Hell difficulty while they were waving their arms in the air.

Of course their survival rate was 0%.

>[Lee Yeon Hee, Floor 1 : Uh

am I in Hell difficulty sdalkhfiuoqrg. I think I pressed the wrong button. Please help me. HELP MEDSKLFJGLKG]

>I can feel her sanity crumble with each passing word. It may have been the greatest misfortune in her life, but for me it was my only ray of hope! Hoorray!

>Meanwhile, the Newbie's post received enormous attention.

>[Lee Joon Suk, Floor 90 : Uh

Hm, I. Uh

Cheer up.]

>[Lee Gi Suk, Floor 22 : Ah

mistakes were made. You miscl**ked and now you're in hell. FeelsBadMan.]

>[Goo Dae Ho, Floor 53 : Uwaa lolololol. Press the wrong button and into Hell you go lololol.]

>[Lee Won Ill, Floor 17 : Cheer up. The survival rate isn't 0%, it's just 0.01% kek.]

Not only is the dialogue great, the character relationships and interactions, even for a few short days, is also well written, realistic and gives you a feel for what the characters are really like, their quirks, motivations, personalities and you feel that even though they aren't perfect, they're humans and they work with each other to overcome adversity as a team. And you feel that they are likeable after all.

>Although It was only for 3 days, I thought I managed to make a bond beyond that of friendship with them. But, all I felt was a little sadness for them, only that.

>Was I the weird one?

>I don't know.

>f*ck.

>Although my brain had calmly accepted the situation, tears flowed from my eyes. To think I could still cry even after all that sh*t that happened before.

The characters are really well written, you get a deep insight into the mind of the MC, how he thinks, his personality, his emotional state.

And yes, he is simple, he is like the average NEET, but the story did very well to capture those feelings and it makes you feel like you are right there with him, it makes him feel like a real person. Just your average frustrated but good-natured guy, not some one-dimensional otaku stereotype like in many Jap novels or some guy with a chip on his shoulder like you get in xianxia novels. Actually if Reincarnator did a flashback to 50 years ago when Hansoo first entered the tutorial stage I'm sure he wouldn't be that much different.
The number of chapters describing Level 1 was unexpectedly high, and at some points you do feel like the author is dragging things out a bit. But then again you get a better sense of just how tough Level 1 really is, and how much room left for improvement there was. It feels really realistic. There is a lot of potential for further chapters. However, I feel that if the story continues to be focused on only the MC for up to level 60 then it's going to be a LOT of chapters of him just grinding levels and that would get boring really fast so I'm hoping that doesn't happen.
Also I hope the story isn't only covering the tutorial level since there is so much more interesting stuff that could happen once he leaves the tutorial stage with probably the highest level in the world. It might be even more interesting.
We'll see where this story goes. There's potential for it to go either way so I might have to revise my rating later.
Mad props to LightNovelBastion for having good taste in novels.

Amazing potential from what I could infer in this story. So the tutorial basically prepares you for the real world in this novel, which has been taken over by monsters. The MC chose hell difficulty which no one wants to be in and is stuck at a certain level. The potential comes from the outside world.

The tutorial could be an ark by itself and the outside world could be another ark if the author is smart enough to realize this. If you plan this out correctly this story could have... more>> up to at least 700-1000+ chapters if they plan it correctly.

You should try this novel until it either gets better, or so bad that you drop it. Its interesting right now at least. <<less

Now, for those of you who are wondering when the tutorial ends, it hasn't ended yet. The novel will keep following the younger MC, and not the 60th floor one.

This novel is really interesting. It has a pretty generic title (for Munpia anyway), but the contents are sooo much better.

Not only do we get to see MC becoming stronger physically, we also see him making moral decisions as well has character development.

... more>> Also, comedy is a plus for me.

Too bad there's no 6/5. One of the best novels that rank up in the top three for me, with EER and Arena.

It's simply a pain to follow the plot line. You are sent from one point in the timeline towards another with no reason whatsoever. The beginning was funny and intriguing, but then they added a beginner. In the end I got used to the idea that the protagonist will act as a babysitter to have a companion. Then we go back in the past when the protagonist had barely started his conquest. I said f*ck it, it's interesting, so no problem. Then we are sent once again to the future... more>> only to find out that the beginner

is a female with a lot of talent that can somehow survive because she is really talented, really really talented, how talented you ask? Well the author said something along the lines "She qualified as a participant of Korea in the Olympic games as an archer, which is known to everyone to be even harder than winning a gold medal at the Olympic games."....

This novel is a disaster where the author wanted to seem original by adding tons of pace changes. Its like preparing a soup by throwing everything you have in the fridge. Is it possible to get something tasty? Absolutely f*cking not. <<less

This. This is it. The dungeon story I’ve always wanted. Where one needs, and gains, more than just game skills or stats. Where grinding is painful and dangerous, but valuable for those who are motivated enough. Where the MC’s thoughts make perfect sense, whether they’re ultimately correct or incorrect. Where the excellent humor doesn’t undermine the seriousness of the situation. Where the story doesn’t skip levels.

The mental traps. The dangers. The opponents. The gods. It’s not just the challenges; everything’s great, every action and feeling’s believable. The MC’s superb, he’s so human but the right kinds of abnormal to survive and thrive like no one else had. The dungeon wonderfully lives up to what it’s supposed to be: a place to train survivors into warriors, and warriors into heroes.

Years ago, I hoped I’d be getting this with ToG. Later, I thought I’d see it in other dungeon novels. Finally, I’ve found it here. I kiss you, TTiTH.

So the MC is Korean and he's pretty much the strongest person in the tutorial game. Cool. But then of all 'miracles', a beginner accidentally selecting the hell mode appears! Of course it turns out to be a beautiful young woman and of course she has to be Korean. (Talk about the odds when supposedly the whole human race is being gradually summoned.) She's also an archery Olympic gold medalist, she's so perfect right? A Mary Sue to be exact. It really pisses me off with how easy she gets it with how she has the MC's backing. Even though the MC went through hell she gets a lot of free passes.

SUMMARY
An excellent Korean novel with a unique spin on the popular dungeon-clearing genre.
Highly recommended for readers who have played grinding RPGs, especially DARK SOULS.
Story structure is episodic with lots of flashbacks, so it can be a little difficult to follow.

I think reviewers can be divided into those who know/played/understand the appeal of Dark Souls and those who don't. Those who did will really appreciate the frustration and mental exhaustion of grinding through a shitty existence.
Those who did not won't get it at all. A lot of... more>> their reviews are indicative of that ("Why is MC so OP?", "Why is MC such an emotional wreck?", "Why does MC end up like a Gary/Mary-whatever Stu").

PREMISE
A Korean pro-gamer Lee Ho Jae is the first batch of humans to be sent by the gods into a tutorial-like dungeon to power up and defeat evil that is invading Earth in the near future. Very typical fantasy K-novel so far.
However, the MC's arrogance causes him to choose the hardest difficulty, leaving him trapped in a hellish existence and now he needs to find a way out. Along the way, the MC slowly uncovers a hidden secret behind the dungeon that all may not be as it seems.

CHARACTERS
The entire novel is singularly focused on the MC, and how his pro-gamer mentality clashes with real world survival. Instead of just powering up, the MC realizes he has REAL PLAYER AGENCY, and that his decisions strongly affect the dungeon/world. He learns and grows from this, completely out of the expectations of the gods that sent him inside. At the same time he struggles to maintain his sanity in this hell-like existence.

I don't know why there are reviewers saying that the MC is just randomly OP, or that he becomes a Gary/Mary Stu. We read his intense struggles to power up just to survive and progress to the next stage. Those comments are like a newb watching a Dark Souls speed-run on YouTube and mock at how "easy" it is. Seriously?? That's borderline offensive.
MC narrates from the point of flashbacks.
Spoiler

He spends almost 10+? Years in the dungeon, is still stuck there, and seems to have worked out some/most of his emotional problems. And that's saying something.
If we all watched and accepted that the protagonist in "Old Boy" became mentally unhinged after being locked in a small room for 15 yrs, of course it's reasonable for Lee Ho Jae to have PTSD and a whole host of other anti-social/self-destructive behavior after 10+? Yrs of survival mode in hell difficulty that he cannot escape from.

[collapse]
So he's narrating from a point of currently being OP, but it also shows his journey. What's wrong with that?

There are many note-worthy side characters with genuinely believable backgrounds that attempt to help the MC, some of the best ones being the "Mobs" (enemy NPCs) that the MC encounters. This is anthropomorphication at it's best.
Spoiler

Lee Ho Jae realizes that they are not just randomly generated enemies that he needs to defeat to progress. They are possibly real (or formerly real) entities that had their own backstories and were just leading their own lives before being pulled into the dungeon. MC develops real empathy for them.
That's an AMAZING concept. Previous game-isekai type stories (esp Jap ones) had at best friendly NPCs that were anthropomorphized.

[collapse]

WRITING STYLE
Decent, not too much exposition. Enough sub-text that readers can easily understand character's emotions.

World Building is decent. The floors are quite creative and varied. But it would've been better if there were more detailed descriptions for the environments. I'd like to visualize a Dark Souls type environment as I'm reading the novel. I think this is where the Koreans could take a cue from Chinese novels.

The use of almost 4th wall interactions with the gods overseeing MC's progress is pretty entertaining, since it's entirely in emotes (no dialogue). A lot of plot hints can be teased out from these emotes, skips the useless exposition while moving the plot along. It's almost theatrical display.
I've seen several other K-novels copy from this so that's saying something.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
The author chose a somewhat achronic narrative structure involving multiple flashbacks (based on the dungeon levels cleared) so it's not the easiest to follow. That said, the dungeon level/timeline is listed prominently at the beginning of each chapter so it's a small hurdle to overcome. It's not like "A Clockwork Orange" which can be difficult to read.

Is this a perfect 5-star novel? No.
But for a webnovel it's definitely much better than most crappy 5-star rated novels I've seen other reviewers give. If the rating system were expanded, it should net at least 4.5 stars. <<less

Seems like a nice guy the MC, but a bad ass who never forgets a grudge. Ever and even keeps a list.

Very hardworking to the point of actually becoming a M. Is smart, but can be foolish, yet that allows him to grow unlike some complete and unrealistic MC's out there. The game is survival base rather than monster fighting, at least early on, yet very amusing to read the sh*t hardcore mode throws at him.

Update. Yeah novel is pretty garbage right now. Long time skip and now MC is s*upidly OP and a god, a process we don't get to see. Wasn't a very satisfying level progression. The system he's in got broken from the 6th floor due to MC soloing stages and rarely gave him a good fight. His mentality becomes very alien over times as well and becomes stubborn in weird ways. And looking back there aren't any real life and death struggles. The MC a lot of the time uses a over powered light skill to blow opponents away, never engaging in real sword or physical battles anymore. It stayed interesting due to his crazy nature, but that has limits. After floor 60 its boring as hell. MC is super OP after a time skip, has a loil child and some folks who are boring following him. Ruins what little of the Tutorial is left. Real world is boring unlike what some people hope it would be. Really becomes a whole other novel. The last good moment was his floor 59 test. Everything past that is a waste. <<less

*breath of releif* Finally, a good 'game world' novel. This novel has a very, very good author who, like most great authors, can take elements that seem cliché and turn them into complex story-driving elements. For example, right off the top, the author is not afraid to reveal that the MC is the strongest in the story with his level in the 250s. However the OP MC pitfall is completely avoided.
Why? Because otherwise he would be dead. Compared to his surroundings his strength is just about what he needs... more>> to MAYBE survive. He isn't invincible at all: his life is In danger every single time he steps outside. But he can use his experiences to surpass the trials ahead of him. The story flashbacks to when he was lvl 1 (a risky move by the author, but again handled in a strong way) so the trials he had to undergo to get to where he was are fully grasped. You get the feeling that the story is entirely centered around his journey starting from square one. Anyway, if I was to summarize, this story is not 'weak to Strong'. It's from 'doomed to NOT doomed'. Survival is a better word for the story.

However, I am very nervous looking at the tag 'skill assimilation' that is tagged for this novel. It could easily ruin the vibe set down right now: working with everything he has to not die rather than breezing through trouble by sitting on a pile of skills stolen from monsters.

Truely, I can't wait for more chapters! <<less

This novel is one of the best I've ever read- and I've read a LOT of novels. The novel switches back and forth between the current him, and him as he cleared the tutorial. A lot of people are complaining about how annoying/boring it is, etc, but personally, I think that's one of the best parts in the novel. In the flashbacks, we can clearly see how his mental strength is deteriorating, how he gets stronger, how he makes the friends he has in the present, etc. And in the... more>> present, we can see how he matured, recovered somewhat from his emotional damage, and how he's on the road on fixing himself again.

The psychological aspect is pretty big here, and honestly, I feel like if he was going to die, it's going to be from su*cide first rather than from a monster. In most other similar novels, it never shows the MC hurting. The MC is always fine being a loner, sees others as troublesome, etc and it's not really realistic. Here though, he has actual human emotions, and how they develop. We can see how he's weak, despite how OP he is on the surface.

My review is probably confusing AF cause I usually never write reviews but all I can say is.... GO READ IT OK!!!!! XD <<less

This novel is the unmatched dungeon floor claiming novel. The quality of the floors the MC climbs in hell mode are great. The MC and his mind set about grinding and taking on challenge is refreshing and the system is truly forging him to become the ultimate sword to cut through anything in his path, much better than other stories who just throw OP skills and gear at their MC, And I just love it that girls aren't just falling for our MC out of the blue every other chapter... more>> and isn't one of those loner losers with social issues. It's a must read for anyone wanting to see true floor climbing in a hell setting, so don't listen to other reviews complaining about the points of view from past to present since they are essential and is interesting story telling. Especially the reviews comparing this novel to other Korean novels where they have completely different objectives or were OP from the start are foolish to the extreme. The novel is called the Tutorial is Too Hard, so this is about the mc's journey through the tutorial system. <<less

Both the writing and translation are high quality. The challenges are creative and it's interesting to read how our MC gets past him. The gods that are watching over these challenges can't seem to speak to the MC directly, but our MC can tell if they're pleased or not. Through these small interactions the adventurer god manages to convey their personality well. They've become my favorite ;)

All in all it's a good novel. The only negative for me is the excessive Korean nationalism. The novel frequently talks about the... more>> various countries of the world and how they're all lagging behind Korea in hell difficulty. Korea is #1! Expect to be reminded of this every dozen chapters or so. If you can get past that, the rest is great.

Final Score: 4/5

It would be a 5/5 without the Korean pride wanking. <<less

Boring.

It's a dungeon-like setting of 100 floors of four difficulties. People are transported at random and are given the choice to choose the difficulty setting, easy, normal, hard or hell. Our MC chose hell and the story starts off with him being stuck on the 60th floor and in need of a co-op partner, to attempt the higher floors, on a difficulty no one wants to attempt except the insane, s*upid or unlucky. An unlucky girl gets transported and he guides her through chat functionality and other derivative game mechanics... more>> and it examines these floors through his own personal flashblack (s).

The author has spent 3 chapters on the 1st 'waiting room' and about 8 chapters on the first floor, 3 chapters on the 2nd 'waiting room' and another 7 chapters so far on the 2nd floor. I'll remind you he's on floor 60.

If you're like me and read stories for interesting characters and their relationships with each other and their environment in a deep fantasy world filled with mystery and awe, avoid this novel. There is little interaction with other characters and the world to speak of is a boring dungeon setting you've seen many times before.

The saving grace is that this author has some solid writing (for a web novel author) but is made worse that the tension has already been removed since we know he survives. But character development you say? There's only so much character development for the MC you can convey on 8-chapter-floors 60 times before it gets incredibly boring. Seems like a poor effort to pad the story out by the author when he can make each level incredibly hard then make the MC survive by plot armor again and again.

Avoid this novel if you're not a fan of the genre, give it a go if you like gauntlet type stories and do not mind a lack of a character cast. <<less

Being a very broad reader, The Tutorial Is Too Hard has been very satisfying. The premise in which the story is set in is quite refreshing as it not your typical reincarnation or transported to another world with vengeance being the MCs prime motivation.

It is all about survival. The author takes us into the mind of a former pro gamer as he faces the difficult challenge of clearing the Tutorial. The novel has plenty of action and comedy, while also brilliantly depicting the darker themes of the story.

One of my Favourites for now! Highly recommended survival novel with some degree of realism.

There is some real potential here. But it is hampered by a few things. The fact that the author starts in medias res and then skips back and forth on the timeline constantly. And the fact the MC is a moron who keeps making idiotic mistakes and surviving because of plot armor, which doesn't gel with the premise that the MC is the only person in the world to reach level 60 in hell difficulty and being this amazing awesome optimizer gamer. Also, characterization is poor. Those are serious mistakes... more>> that should drop it down to 1 star, but the good parts counter balance it to get to an even 3, middle of the road story.

Some of the negative reviews complained about the improbability of the other person entering hell difficulty just coincidentally being a fellow korean. They must have missed where the MC explained that the tutorial dungeon is separated by national "servers". The tutorial dungeons do not abduct 100 people total all over the earth, they abduct 100 people per nation every month, each placed in their own separate national dungeon. This drastically shifts national power since the size of your land or power of traditional military becomes irrelevant compared to how many people finish the tutorial dungeon and at which difficulty level. (some aliens/gods/whoknows set it up to let humanity defend itself against interdimensional monsters pouring in from portals that open all over the earth)

He also mentioned how in the american server there are 11 survivors in hell difficulty (although they got stuck in level 30, the scrubs), because americans are "so macho" that significantly larger numbers of them are willingly entering hell difficulty even after the people from easy difficulty got out and informed the world of how suicidally dangerous that difficulty is (0.01% survival rate, MC is permanently stuck at level 60/100, all other survivors are stuck at level 30/100). Most nations made it illegal to enter hell difficulty... which is ridiculously silly because there is literally nothing you can do to stop them, and if anyone survives it they come out as a god emperor who can literally solo the entire world and cannot be bound by laws. And anyone that enters will be stuck there until they finish all 100 stages or die... In retrospect, an extremely s*upid and unenforceable law is the most realistic part of the novel. <<less

One of the best translated korean novels so far.

I feel the emotions of the characters, I mean they are human to me with emotion not a tool, even the side characters made me take interest to them.

The MC, so far always made a somewhat realistic decisions that I can relate, though he somewhat didn't bother about the group that made laws inside the tutorials.

Spoiler

So, The MC was stucked at Floor 61, where he needs another individual to beat it as it has to be beat at the same time. He made a clone but it's useless and now he had Yong Yong the dragon but he's not sure if that will do. The archer woman was still at floor 6, it's the last time she made an appearance.

At C72, The MC was still at floor 12 so I will expect it will take a hundred or two chapters to reach the floor where he is at, floor 61.

And also, even though he's still at floor 61 he's already the strongest inside and outside the tutorial as he said that he's f*cking stronger than the G-rank monster, which is the strongest monster outside the tutorial, who needs many of the best individual to sacrificed in order to slay it.

And many of the gods were interested to him that even the God of adventure and God of slowness made him take their test to be thei apostle.

[collapse]

The comedy isn't a joke.

There's a scene where he needs to kill hundreds or thousands while he's stopping the urge to poop, of course without his weapons and access to his inventory.

He still don't have a love interest so I won't expect much romance.

A must read.

The book is 'written' well but there isn't much of a story. As the title suggests, the story is still in the tutorial. I read another comment and it mentioned that the tutorial hasn't ended even at chapter 180. The story is basically about the MC grinding his life away in the tutorial. It gets boring after a while no matter how well its written. The only reason I kept reading is because I hoped the story progressed.

The whole story of the novel would be a better novels prologue, it isn't bad but when the whole premise is so flawed it's better to just wait for the author to release a second book with the actual story.

tl;dr : It's like reading Lord of the Rings but the hobbits would never leave the shire. The adventure will never begin.

p.s : Korea is the strongestestest nation, Koreans are talented^9 af and a Korean created the human race. /S
