The Room of Bygone Days

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

Please construct that room in your mind — that exquisite, delicate, and sturdy room. With your own soul as the antipode, envision that room in the distant cluster of stars.

In that deep and dark place that cannot be named, cannot be spoken of, and cannot be projected on to the real world, your room may attract “His” attention.

“He” isn’t interested in sacrifices. Your existence is what’s important.

That which cannot be called shall knock at your door. As a guest, “He” will answer your questions — even if they are riddles that are eternally unsolvable.

You must remember and firmly believe that there is nothing within the room that can hurt you, destroy you, or swallow you whole.

Ah, good luck to you.

This is a story… about an unlucky mage loved by a god.

It was such a surreal experience! I loved how caring and kind the ML was- perfect read for anyone needing their fix of fluff! Just long enough to build lasting feelings, but not so long it dragged out. A masterpiece of romance!

A story about how Evan attracts the attention of a god and his subsequent descent into madness.

Warning: ... more>>
Spoiler

There's no happy ending for Evan.

[collapse]

I really really love how the author portrays Evan's dwindling sanity and the vivid descriptions of the grotesque monsters in this story. Reading some of the descriptions even made me slightly nauseous. The characters in the story also have very realistic reactions to the horrific events unfolding in the story.

I also really like how the main focus of this story is on horror and not romance/action, which makes it very different from most of the unlimited flow/evilgod!ML stories we see today. The ML here is, and will always be, a god that cannot understand/does not care about human emotion.

To sum it up, if you like enjoy HP Lovecraft stuff and you're OK with a story that doesn't focus on romance, I think you'll probably love this novel. <<less

Definitely worth the time. Short but really we written! Very descriptive, engaging. Scary and grotesque. Unpredictable and twisted plot. I wouldnt call it a great BL story but still recommend reading it if you're into dark scary unusual plots

An excellent psychological horror about an apprentice mage's descent into madness after opening a Pandora's box that is "the room". He catches the gaze of some unknowable entity and desperately tries to escape "His" gaze. Did he succeed? That's up to interpretation...

Things I liked:

    • amazing prose, truly a delight to read all the nasty, gritty, heart-pounding, forsaken descriptions of madness and the indescribable
    • the pacing of the madness was quick but for such a short novella, it worked; I enjoyed seeing him first construct his Room then not know whether he was in or out of it then finally entirely unable to detect reality
    • the writer's style isn't overly-descriptive, but somehow captures the encroaching, paranoid feeling of some horror living inside your mind and enacting brutal mental and bodily torture
Why it's not 5 stars:

    • I feel this would have been best as a 30 chapter book; it just felt too short and the focus was on describing the horrors of the entity and not so much on character development
    • It would've been nice to see what Evan and Alister were like before and/or after the nightmare at the mage tower; to contrast a carefree before-Evan with a broken, cathartic after-Evan who's existence is prolonged only for the purpose of being His puppet or to see Alister deal with the aftermath of an obsessive love lost to something unknowable that he can only glimpse by going through the same horrors
    • Another 15 chapters would have really helped flesh out not just the WHAT that is happening to the characters, but the SO WHAT
Why you should read it:

    • you're not looking for plot or character development as much as you are an amazing description of psychological horror
    • truly something to send a tingle up your spine
    • the world of mages and magic was unexpected but lent a really cool context for this story to take place in
    • short read that reminded me of Joe Hill's style of horror writing

Very recommended. A well-written psychological/eldritch horror story, the romance part is..... well, not traditional. It's pretty short, at 16 chapters and got quite and open-ended ending.

Also, I recommend you to carefully reread this novel after finishing it. The foreshadowings are so chefs kiss.

The last line of the summary is literally the premise of the story, but I'll summarize it in less abstract words:

Our MC, Evan Reeves, had a "mad" roommate who "mysteriously" disappeared years ago. Said roommate left a note on how to construct a room and physically project it... more>> into starry sky where Eldritch Gods reside. One day, Evan was so fed up with hellish life in Mage Tower he escaped to that room. Unfortunately for him, one of the Gods took notice of him and began to distort his reality into eldritch nightmare. The rest of the story is about how Evan's reality (and sanity) is getting all messed up little by little. <<less

Waiting for it to continue! I'm usually lazy asf to write this kind of thing, and even bother to login just because I want to tell everyone who've seen this that THIS NOVEL IS REALLY PROMISING!!

At first its kinda lil hard to read, I even flipped my brain countless time but don't worry you'd still get the point. How do I say it? The Gore is AWESOME and the atmosphere.. The feeling I have when I read it it's just.. DANG!

I'm really looking forward to this one, not to mention... more>> that this evil God or something is pretty interesting, looking forward to their interaction.

This is a gem fr fr fr <<less
