I can't believe no one's talking about this novel.

MC Tang Shen is a PhD student who transmigrates into a poor scholar's son in a farming village. He literally starts from zero, and unlike most MCs, he initially has 0 interest in taking the imperial exams and becoming the zhuangyuan or something. He just wants to live a humble life. But things are happening in the background, and changes at court bring a respected figure to their village, who eventually takes Tang Shen as a student. Still, he doesn't think much... more>> of becoming an official, because he thinks he can do equally great things as a merchant.

Up until

Spoiler

A greatly respected official is framed for committing treason with the former crown prince, and when he is executed despite his compatriots' pleas to the throne for mercy, his cohort commit mass su*cide in scholar solidarity (including MC's teacher).

This shakes MC to the core, and he swears to find out who framed the official and why, in order to clear his teacher's name.

[collapse]

ML truly strikes you as an older character than MC (he is physically MUCH older and they only strike a chord because their mental images are similar and they are both ridiculously good at rote memorisation) and extremely intelligent. He's not a clean-cut good guy and has a reputation for being a corrupt official.

With the exception of one particular arc, I find this to be one of the most grounded transmigration historicals. It also has several complex characters (including the emperor). I got goosebumps during the final dialogue between MC and the emperor.

Basically, if you like snarky banter, political scheming and a dramatic MC without a golden finger, here it is. <<less

First, thanks to the Translator for giving us access to this rare gem. Your translation is impeccable, please don't give up. I think people will start to value this novel more when they become familiar with the plot as the chapters are posted. I'm already refreshing the page every day to see if there are any updates.

It's still too early to make a detailed review, but from this first chapter we can already have the notion that this is a novel with an intelligent and addictive plot.

If you're someone like... more>> me, highly addicted to historical plots, multidimensional characters and intelligent conversation this is the right novel for you.

But this is quality stuff, so you can't look at something like this in a superficial way. We're talking world building in an ancient time and a probably slow romance (subject to change) as is typical of this type of setting.

But, you won't know before you try.

Please support the translator and the author if you can and let's embark on what promises to be brilliant reading together. <<less

The Kingdom that Never Sleeps is a complex yet realistic historical novel set in a parallel Song Dynasty.

The MC, Tang Shen aka Tang Jingze, is just a Phd student in his 20s. He grows so much over the course of the book. From a ambitionless & slightly arrogant child to a powerful and favored official.

The ML is Wang Zhen aka Wang Zifeng. He is a complex character who I would have loved even if he was not the love interest. I don't think I understood him even until the end.... more>> His actions were all show not tell. He is never just a background board but a real person. The only complaint I have is that he is too perfect sometimes.

The other characters are great too. Liang Song, Su Wenyun, Li Jingde, all the ministers that frequently appear all have their own plis points.

The best written character however is

Spoiler

The emperor Zhao Fu.

What a complex dynamics he created amongst the entire court and that even after what he did he is still worthy of being called a Wise Emperor of the Ages.

The final conversation with Tang Jingze really made me feel the complexity of the character and love him even more (as a well written character)

All in all a great read.

Just keep in mind the political situation grows very complex from last 50 chps. It may lead to information overload. <<less

I like this author and wanted to read this novel a few years back, but historical novels always use traditional chinese (phrases) and MTL was horrible on political plots then. Now that I've read it, it didn't disappoint. Thank you translator who picked it up and renewed my interest.

This is a condensed story about the many twists and conspiracies a royal court can have, and how different individuals have their roles to play in a complex system.

Our Main Character, Tang Shen is a little man on a tiny boat trying... more>> to navigate his way around the turbulent seas of the dynasty. He starts off being a typical transmigerator who wants to start a business to get rich and have a easy life, but gets his life turned around after an occurance involving many major figures of the court.

He is hardworking, smart and very sincere. When he got transmigerated, he became gifted with photographic memory which helped a lot in his road of becoming a official.

The ML is probably the smartest gentleman in the novel. He's an established high-ranking official and I wasn't able to capture the extensive protection he gave MC until the final arc, but once I found out how much he manipulated the scenes from the back, I got a new appreciation for him.

Their romance is very slow but I don't reccomend skipping parts just to see them get together because you'll probably become confused about the situation. This story is not about their romance, but our MC's journey in this dynasty.

Spoiler

These two will only get together after 100 chapters, so this is not for those wanting a romance focused novel. This is a career-focused one.

There were so many twists and turns to this story that I had to rely on the sisters in the comment section to help decipher what was going on. Many past actions are linked and at the end they form a complex web of conspiracy that got me shocked at the story progression.

The past is linked to the present, and all actions have meaning-or, are meaningless in the big scoop of things.

The side characters are all so well-written and I think everyone who have read finished this story can agree that
Spoiler

The plot surrounding the Emperor was the most complex.

The good concedes, the evil dominates, and the s*upid will live. The Emperor's talk with Tang Shen reminded me of how deep the waters are, and how one needs to always hide their true self in the matters of officialdom. I wish we could have extras on his past and his life as a prince. He was the most interesting character for me.

I don't want to spoil too much, but I just want to say all that aside, I support the sisters clamouring for Su to get romance. I want to see him in love too!
