I possessed an extra in a novel who conducted experiments torturing the ultimate weapon, a baby dragon named “Renard”. To change the fate of Renard being killed by the protagonist, I released the baby dragon into the forest where dragons live and succeeded in running away..

One day, after the adventures of the protagonist and his group had ended and peace had come. I received a royal decree, after I escaped from the villain and lived in hiding as a researcher in a laboratory.

Renard, who had become the guardian dragon of the kingdom after defeating the villain with the protagonist, demands only one thing. At this moment, he must find his “companion”. I pledge myself as the dragon’s knight, offering myself as the dragon’s companion in sacrifice.

“Why are you saying such absurd things?”

“Don’t you understand what your mistake was? You abandoned me. You should also suffer to the point of death because of me.”

So far, it's been a great read!

First chapter was a little confusing since it seems to time skip into the future. But after that, the story follows how our protagonist entered the novel and how he became involved in the dragons life.

I will note that anything after chapter 30 is behind a paywall. I personally don't tend to pay for novel chapters unless I can see that all chapters have been translated as I've paid for chapters before and then had the novel I'm reading abandoned by the translator.

Firstly, the description is misleading. If you're wondering what type of story this is, look at the tags and skim the first couple of chapters. Secondly, I don't know if it's the the translation or just the author's style but the writing cannot be described as good. Things develop rapidly and randomly, scenes transition without any cue, leaving the reader feeling like they're teleporting about. The dialogue is stiff and inhuman and names aren't used so when more than two characters are talking it's difficult to discern who is speaking.... more>> Put simply, it's a mess. Furthermore, none of the story elements employed by the author are used or developed satisfactorily. The role of the MC as a transmigrator is essentially over in the first quarter of the story. There is no 'how to we escape this fate' or 'how do we save this doomed world' grand plot. There's really no overarching plot at all. Given the absence of this kind of scenario you might think this is a character driven story, but you'll be disappointed if you go in expecting that too. The MC's characterization is superficial and inconsistent. For example, in flashbacks of his past life we find out that MC developed an asocial personality as a response to his experiences, but beyond telling us that he has attachment issues, the MC's asociality is never expanded upon in a meaningful way. Like that flashback, the author often tries to 'tell' us about MC's personality, probably because they don't know how to 'show' us who he is. As a result, what we are told and what we are shown often don't seem to match. Even eighty chapters in it's difficult to describe the MC, except as a shell of a human, and not because of something like trauma, but because the author doesn't seem to know who he is either. Another example of a pointless or undeveloped element is the existence of magic. It's never elaborated on in any way even though the whole reason MC became involved with Renard is because he has some affinity with "dark" magic. But he never learns how to use magic and has no interest in it. This plot point is also absurd, because even though Renard is hatched from a black egg, ultimately he's a fire dragon who has nothing to do with dark magic. The character's also have no meaningful relationships. For example, after MC escapes from the count he's taken in by a traveling hunter, but then the author kicks us in the head with a ten year time skip and this character completely disappears. Ultimately there's too many dots that don't connect and things that don't add up, so unless you have some extreme fixation on dragons in BL I wouldn't recommend bothering with this at all. <<less

This has a lot of potential. I can see that this story wants to focus on MC and ML's relationship but it kind of falls a little flat. There are bits where it goes for the romcom route playing on ML's dragon brain and lack of understanding of human nature but that also kinda falls a little flat.

The biggest thing that this story suffers from is that there was all this build up creating this anticipation in the reader but it stagnated. Hard.

The build up was in their childhood where all the preparation and anticipation built up. Then a timeskip to where their adults and reached success in their lives. Then they meet up and everything had to slow down again. Although there is a resolution to the novel plot that the MC was transmigrated into, that's not why the anticipation was built for. Therefore the story stagnated hard.

Due to this, the pacing of the story was abruptly change and slowed down considerably. Although there are spicy scenes between MC and ML, it's not stirring the right emotions to progress the plot from what I read so far. And that's the main focus and drive of the plot right now, make MC fall in love with ML.

As for the romcom, it's a good call especially with the change in pacing. But it's not enough in my opinion. I feel like the side characters need more screen time which is funny because I'm usually in the opinion that side shouldn't have too much screen time. But as said before, ML's dragon brain needs second opinions on human nature and he's not going to MC about it. So the side characters need to step up and play comedic relief.

But this is honestly a good read! Despite what I said about the stagnation, I do want to see how MC and ML will get together. Their start is honestly tragic and I want to cheer for them all the way. I find MC's own struggle with socializing while maintaining a deadpan demeanor funny. ML's childish tantrums aren't unreasonable to imagine because 1. He's a dragon and 2. He's a dragon. Dragons don't care but their treasures. And he's young.

Their personalities do make this story run since the main focus is these two idiots. <<less

The story had potential to go on, and the idea is interesting but the translation is really bad. Sometimes it feels like some of the text is missing and it is not clear who is talking etc.

I will be dropping this for now. I will come back to this if there is better translation available in the future.
