The Oriole Island belonged to the famous and notable Murong family. The current island owner was a young girl Murong Qiang. Because of her father’s death, she was surrounded by lots of ambitious people in the capital. Then she went back to the Oriole Island with her widowed mother and young sister. Murong Qiang’s sister, Murong Wei, a gorgeous beauty was engaged with the nobleman Ren Shiqiong, but she eloped with the famous painter Xu Zihui. So Murong Qiang married Ren Shiqiong instead of her sister.

The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind. But sometimes, it is hard to find out who is the oriole and who is the cicada.

Seven people said the same story, but the whole story was not clear until the end, and the story was always reversed back and forth.

Maybe in the end you were going to ask me, was this the original story?

Instead of "beautiful", interesting is a more fitting term to describe this story. Also... clever? poignant? The style is certainly refreshing

This story is essentially, a mystery, revolving around a certain situation. The conclusion will slowly be unfurled as we read the perspective of that certain situation from various perspective. The storytelling style reminds me a bit of akiyoshi rikako's; each person's perspective reads like a diary entry, written while recalling the day's event in the middle of the night. Pretty.

Truthfully, I'm disappointed with the ending. The built up to... more>> the ending is really nice. Yet, the ending falls short. I think that it could have more impact than this. Other commenters have gushed about this, but I personally don't think that it worth 5 stars. A solid 4, I think.
The first chapter might be a bit bumpy, but the latter chapters will become smoother. Don't let it discouraged you! <<less

Absolutely loved it! Didn't expect the twists and turns as perspective after perspective unfolds!

One moment you think, 'oh so that's it' but then the next, it's actually not then the next-it's still not! One chapter will have you feeling pain for the MC, frowning for the MC, angry for the MC- but in the end- its all for naught.

The only perspective you can trust is our MC's!

Very enjoyable short story. 7 chapters long, each chapter is a perspective of a different character... starting with side characters and ending with the protagonist. Each chapter revealed the layer underneath the surface.

There is a unique feel to the story, which makes it more likable if you read it while in a calm state of mind.

Although the protagonist is smart, she doesn't have an understanding of romance. Even though she is not in love with Ren Shiqiong (her husband), she has an affection for him that she isn't aware of. I guess it will not be long before they have a marriage with deep love. This isn't groundless conjecture, I'm basing this on how she let go of the bird that she had kept for many years. She no longer needs the bird for companionship because she now has RS. 💕

I recommended this novel. Every chapter needed to read carefully. This novel have an interesting and engaging story telling. If you missed little bit you will lost in next chapter so this novel isn't your light and cute read.

The author made wise decision for making it as a short story. If this story dragged the essence of mystery will fade and the intriguing story telling will getting boring.

I love every character. They're flawed and have many layers in their behavior and decisions. Some people might think this was a happy... more>> ending but if you thinking another way this was just an okay ending, but I guess that's how life should be in reality. Every character made their final decision and live with it for the rest of their life. <<less

Short but a wonderful plot line.. ending was bit unexpected but it made it much more interesting...I loved the female lead here more than the Ml..

People should give this book a try.. recommend

Wow ok this is an incredible piece. And I truly mean this. I really wish it had an official translation it's just that good.

The story is told from 7 different perspectives, all about the same situation, all focusing on different aspects of it, yet revolving around a single individual. It brilliantly shows how and why people's view of a single person can be so different, that not mentioning a name they wouldn't be able to figure out they're speaking of the same person.

Ahhhh I really do want to talk about... more>> it but no matter what I say I feel I will spoil a little and this is def one of the things you do not want spoiled. <<less

It's my 1st time reading a short story this good when I mean good it's simply amazing! People would think what's so amazing about it but if we think about the small details it's really impressive.. It showed the perceptive of seven different person's in different ways. Simply loved it

I knew it, I knew from the start that MC isn't simple woman. She appeared harmless all the time but she actually a very ambitious woman who will do anything that seems to be advantageous for her, be it in the present or in the future.

She unconsciously made 2 guys fell in love with her during her careful planning. Guy number 1 is a famous painting, Xu Zihui. She acted as a gentle and oblivious woman in front of him and made him lower his guard. Her motive? His priceless... more>> painting obviously and also maybe a future connection with him. But she accidentally fell in love with him too.

They didn't end up together of course because he was destined to roam the world and won't stay in one place for too long. She also didn't love him that much for her to threw away everything that she already carefully planned for a long time.

Guy number 2 is Ren Shiqiong. He fell in love with her after she saved his life. He thought she's just a kind hearted girl but litte did he knew that she saved him after she guessed his identity from his pendant. She simply wanted a future favor from him.

Coincidentally, his father demanded him to marry into her family. He thought it's destiny while it's actually part of her scheme. And he naively thought that he's the one that doing the scheme in order for MC to marry him. I think Ren Shiqiong was no match for our MC.

There is only one downside of this story: it's just too short and I don't have enough of it. I know that it's already good as it is but I'm still curious about her life after marrying Ren Shiqiong. Did she finally manage to took back her family's business? Did she fall in love with Ren Shiqiong in the end? Etc. Sadly, I won't get any answer to those question. Well, I guess I just have to leave it to my imagination. <<less

Nope, nope. Don't be deceived by the 'romance' tag. If you are like me who only feed on fluff, you won't help but protest and demand for another chapter or better yet A SEQUEL!

It was not what I expected (hello, mystery tag) and it was a gem!

If you like baddass, business mogul heroines (fortunately for me, they're my favorites!) then this short story is for you. I just love how calculative and smart our MC is.

I just decided to give this a try since there were only 7 chapters, but I didn't expect this to be written so well for a short story. Initially, I was very confused because of the diffent POVs in the first chapters, since I seldom encounter novels that give every character, even a side character a POV of their own, but everything was cleared up. Because of random clues that I picked up from the story and my imaginations leading me to nowhere, I was like oh no and had... more>> thought it was going to be a slightly dark read, which I wasn't really fond of. But contrary to my expectations, it was actually simpler than what I imagined lol. This story deviates from your usual genre, and is quite unpredictable. A refreshing and interesting read that you can finish in one sitting.

If you are secondthinking to read this story, why not just give it a try? <<less

This book was so well done, it's scintillating. My heart raced after I finished this book and honestly I would have it no other way.

This book goes to show beautifully how the mantis doesn't see the entire sight. Oh it's gorgeous, poor mantis for missing out.

The FL was beautiful, simple and intelligent. The mother was a failure. The sister was disgusting. The ML could have done better, truthfully, but in the end I found him cute, oops.

I need a side story, that shows beautifully how she is living her best... more>> life with her ML. It's a pity the author didn't go to write other books (or maybe I just didn't find them on this website). <<less

Short gem of a story!

Loved the writing style of seeing the same story from 7 different perspectives! It was a very interesting read!
