Martial arts and cultivation. Two different systems in a single world.

Fang Chen had reached the peak of power in the Grand Xia Empire. He was a mighty Qi Core Stage martial artist, and he led an army of 600,000. Yet he fell prey to the schemes of the Qingsong Empire, and he was defeated at Three World Mountain. His army fell; his vision was taken away from him; his sea qi was shattered, and he became nothing more than a cripple. In his final moment of clarity, a blazing sun and the figure of an immortal were burned into his mind.

The defeated general thus returned, only to face endless humiliation. However, something changed the day he was defeated—Fang Chen realized that his soul could leave his body and roam the world.

For five years, he endured mockery and insults. For five years, he observed everything going on around him without anyone knowing. Five years was neither a short nor long time, but it was enough for him to reach a state of enlightenment.

“Oh, there’s actually a fellow Daoist who received such enlightenment in such a small empire!” – Daoist Yun He, Central Continent Empire.

… Daoist Yun He raised his hand and sent a ray of spiritual light into Fang Chen’s forehead… Those memories constantly intertwined and gathered into a bright golden manual called the [Introduction to the Three Thousand Daos] How will Fang Chen’s path change, and what exciting adventure awaits? Follow Fang Chen in his path of cultivation to become an Immortal of the Nine Realms!

Official blurb:

The path to immortality is mysterious and strange, while humans remain insignificant. The hearts of immortals are as cold as frost. To them, all living beings are but little mayflies, frail and short-lived. Young Fang Chen stumbled upon this path of immortal ascension by chance. Even so, he had only one wish. With a divine sword in hand, Fang Chen wishes to establish peace in the Nine Realms!

Translator review here to give a rough idea of what readers might be getting into

Hello, I am StarveCleric. I have translated quite a few works, such as Martial God Asura, Library of Heaven's Path, Little Tyrant Doesn't Want to Meet With a Bad End, 100, 000/Hour Professional Stand-in and so on, so I'd like to assure you the translation quality is decent heh!

In essence, this is a face-slapping book, where the MC is almost always composed and in control of the situation, even when faced with those in power.

Beneath Fang... more>> Chen's polite and scholarly exterior is a vicious man who wouldn't hesitate to insult or kill people if he deems it necessary, though that wouldn't be his first solution to problems. He cares greatly for his countrymen, and one of his main motivations is to free his people from the oppression of the surrounding countries. However, that doesn't mean he blindly follows authority - he has his principles and he upholds them even when there is overwhelming opposition from others, for better or for worse. <<less

I feel like 40 chapters is enough to give this novel a preliminary review.

The story follows Fang Chen who "recovers" his cultivation after being crippled and unlike other novels with the same concept there are no arrogant young masters, no face slapping and no system or cheats.

Every chapter is well written with no fillers, no info dumps and no dumb enemies who throw themselves at the MC one by one.

I wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it's better than most current high rated novels on this site and it deserves... more>> a read.

update: nvm, the story is full of problems and the MC arrives just in time to solve everything. It feels like a game full of side quests with no main story.

The entire world is divided into tiers meaning it's gonna be a repetitive "moving to a bigger map".

Also, there is a lot of face slapping in the form of comparisons. "I'm so-and-so, who is this nobody? *Gasp* it's the MC!" <<less

Imagine any popular xianxia novel with 1k+ chapters and take out any memorable events and characters. Then you will get this novel.

First 10-150 chapters are literally the only good chapters. After than it goes into a nosedive.

You will even get filler chapters later, but these fillers are of a bad kind, these that you can skip and not lose anything if you want. I endured 1500+ chapters only to realize that even with so many chapters the characters are plain npc, the world has different realms etc, yet almost everything... more>> is the same, the world is dull and uninteresting.

I will give you an example of a big novel with a proper world - The Mech Touch. That novel has over 6000 (!) chapters, and most of them are fillers, yet they are good fillers, which expand and build up the novel's world, show characters personalities through different events etc. That novel too has "realm lvls", yet you can easily tell the difference, remember some organizations and characters even if they were in the "filler" chapters.

There is none of such things here.

Fight scenes are a joke here as well. MC either doesn't fight, our annihilates the opponent in 1 shot (and it doesn't matter whether he was mortal blind man or a 5-stage immortal at that moment, its written all the same.)

I don't recommend that novel for anyone. If you want to waste some time reading generic xianxia/xuanhuan, go read I Shall Seal the Heavens or Coiling Dragon or smth... at least you will remember something from them, either some events or characters. <<less

Amazing translation. The MC is just to perfect for my taste. He somehow has an undying love for his country and despite being a war hero everybody hates him and loves him ?? Complex and nuanced need to be shown rather than told. I can't bring myself to read more, an interesting premise though

this novel until chapter 123 is fun to read, it's a slightly slow but dynamic novel, I mean, things take time to happen and cultivation is also slow until now (in terms of chapters) but since chapter 1 there's been a lot of things that capture the reader's attention. The MC's life is not very difficult and so far he doesn't seem to have had a real challenge yet, but he is not an omnipotent MC, he will possibly suffer difficulties in the future when the novel progresses.

The characters have... more>> varied and interesting personalities, it's not the novel with the most interesting secondary characters I've ever read but it's also not like those novels where they seem like robots with the same personality.

I feel like the style of this novel will still change in the future, it's like chapter 123 is still in the introduction, so probably this assessment won't be as accurate in the future, maybe it will change for better or worse, but so far I'm finding it quite entertaining. <<less

This novel is a hidden gem

The MC is not a pushover. He does what he thinks is right even if the emperor doesn't agree with him. He knows how to maneuver his way out of situations instead of just killing everyone that stands in his way, unlike most bloodthirsty MCs.

The other characters stand out as well. They don't just oppose or support the main character. They have their own personality and agenda. There is this woman whom the MC is betrothed to who acts arrogantly, but it's later revealed that... more>> she has her reasons for doing so. She was trying to test if the MC has put aside his pride and will be loyal to her country, or else she is going to kill him.

The translation is great too. It's asy to read <<less

I enjoyed the novel a lot at the start, it wasn't perfect, and the flaws were starting to poke their heads out from early on, but it was fun enough. Overtime the flaws became more obvious, specially the pacing. Sometimes you read 10 chapters back to back and are left wondering if anything actually happened in those 10 chapters.

The arcs also start to feel very repetitive, and this is made more noticeable because the enemy is the same every time. Everything negative that happens in the story can be traced... more>> back to the Sprit Blood Sect. If the MC trips on a pebble and falls I would bet my left testicle that it would later be revealed that the Sprit Blood Sect put the pebble there. Every arc basically goes like this:

-- MC comes across some trouble or injustice

-- MC uses peeping tom ability to find out what is really going on, which is always Spirit Blood Sect scheming

-- MC will ask his magic mirror for some context "Hey Siri, what do you know about the enemy's macguffin?"

-- MC uses insider knowledge to sabotage the Spirit Blood Sect's schemes

-- MC defeats all the schemers by punching above his weight and if ancestors show up MC always has some convenient backer

I think there is a decent story buried somewhere here, there are things im invested in, like knowing more some characters who are hinted as having extraordinary backgrounds, or the MC visiting some of the far away places mentioned, however it is hard to keep interest when the MC is forever taking detours that feel meaningless, almost feels like it is the same detour over and over again. <<less

So far, it's been a great read. Before when I saw this with the MC being blind kinda turned me away from starting to read it, but it really doesn't take anything away from the story. In fact, it adds to the story. It makes it a bit more unique, when people he meets for the first time realise that he's blind.

The pace of the story doesn't seem fast nor slow, the MC is cultivating at a decent pace and the chapters don't seem filler-ish. The only problem I can... more>> think of, is that the chapters are kinda short. However, it makes up for it with consistent updates from the translator and a phenomenal translation quality to them. I never see any grammar or misspelling mistakes.

Looking forward to future chapters. <<less

This is one of the few Wuxia novels that I enjoy. No cliché storyline.

I also love the fact the MC went from being a strong willed and powerful martial artist before becoming a cultivator in training through sheer luck. He fighting against the blood cultists without boasting or underestimating anyone is one point I enjoy the most.

Having Starve as a translator is a good indication of a quality novel. It also assure us of a finest translations.

The story progression is good. Not so much of an overpowered MC nor weak. The feeling it gives me is of an ordinary guy who you wanna get to know more. It has surprising and unexpected plots and is funny.

Give it a try and you'll enjoy it.

Pretty solid "generic xianxia" in my book. It feels like the early chapters of something like Martial Peak or NSHBA - MC is in the lowest-level world, where martial artists mix with cultivators. Travels through the world with an overarching quest of getting from his lowest-tier country to the first-tier country to join his sect, while running into all kinds of troubles along the way. There is a good amount of unknowns as of now - we get hints of higher-level powers, but no real overview of the grander world... more>> structure or powers behind the scenes. MC has a good amount of side-quests set up for his journey, based on past events, and I'm in to read about them. +1 for sword cultivation done pretty well.

For now, it's solid work. I enjoy unfolding mysteries of the world with MC. <<less

Not bad, but I'm finding that it has similar problems to a lot of reincarnation stories do, in that, like in a reincarnation stories, the MC is really too overpowered to actually be challenged which will get boring if the author doesn't change pace a bit. Both in politics and in cultivation, he doesn't really seem to have a very hard job so the novel hasn't really had either particularly cool fights or interesting scheming.
