I love this story very much. I think the characters of male lead and female lead are pretty much realistic and the growth of their relationship is satisfying for me.

I just want to preface this by saying that I know this is a slow burn romance. I've read plenty of slow burn romances, this is not my first run of the genre.

Started reading this cause of the high reviews but I was disappointed..

I wanted to drop it after the first couple chapters (cause I can usually tell by then if I will like a novel or not) but decided to keep pushing through because of the key point mentioned in the synopsis:

The female lead experiences setbacks followed by growth, but her personality early on is quite unlikable, just something to note.

But after reading up to Chapter 30, I just couldn't make myself keep reading it.

I honestly disliked all the characters..

    • FL is a pushover and everyone takes advantage of her. Don't know when her change starts but after 30 chapters, I'm not sticking around to find out.
    • ML is mostly a d*ckhead in the 30 chapters I have read.
    • Side characters are annoying as hell. Most are two-faced and love gossiping about their coworkers lives, even the ML's assistant....
    • FL's family really sucks. All of them get on my nerves, especially her mother.
I don't know, but I'm not gonna be finishing this story.

Loved this story, but I have to admit I skipped over a lot of the parts where the family was making trouble. It was just so unbearable. But I guess that's also a sign of good writing, it makes you feel as frustrated as the characters in the story.

I think I should say that I loved this romance so much more because it's so different from the other stories in that there's actual conflict between the couple, and that there was some very believable resolution to that conflict. Other domineering... more>> CEO romance novels just don't have that kind of conflict that makes the love/romance SO much sweeter like this one.

I have to say, however, that the translations were so horrid that I willingly chose to read MTL by Google (and I wasn't surprised that MTL was so much more readable than the tr*sh Atlas Translates put out).

All in all, 5 stars for the story, 0 stars for translation. Read it in MTL. <<less

Wanted to give it a 3 but mistakenly put 2.

This book is a trial in endurance if you have any tolerance left for infuriating characters and toxic relationships. Our heroine, Xu Mi Yu, is certainly frustrating at times, but her struggles are understandable given her tragic backstory.

Spoiler

Xu Mi Yu was the unwanted third daughter born to parents desperate for a son. Seen as a burden, she was neglected and abused, shaping her into an extremely subservient woman with rock-bottom self-esteem. Her efforts to please her narcissistic mother and earn a shred of parental love were constantly rebuffed, leading to more physical and verbal abuse.

The story kicks off with Xu Mi Yu's mother, a manipulative succubus, demanding luxury hotel accommodations during a visit, forcing her daughter and son-in-law out of their own home. When the hotel proves more comfortable, the mother insists on staying while her family returns to the house she's ransacked and looted. Xu Mi Yu's husband, understandably fed up with her family's entitlement, has an affair which Xu Mi Yu discovers at this very hotel the next day.

Showing an uncharacteristic spark of backbone, Xu Mi Yu divorces him despite unanimous opposition from her leech family members hoping to keep mooching off his income. But her small victory is short-lived as she's swiftly scammed out of her divorce settlement. With no money, career, or supportive family, she ends up as a hotel maid at the site of her marital immolation.

If the relentless misery inflicted on Xu Mi Yu wasn't torturous enough, her insufferable colleagues make reading this story a masochistic exercise. They bully, gaslight, and sabotage her at every turn, yet she's expected to magically become an assertive leader who wins them over through sheer niceness. Their execrable behavior has little to no consequences.

But the biggest travesty is the writer daring to label this reeking dung heap a "sweet romance" by pairing the emotionally battered Xu Mi Yu with a scumbag male lead. This loathsome rich boy rages at her with a demented visceral hatred from their first meeting, judging her as a jilted pathetic woman refusing to let go of her philandering husband like his mother. He then spends half the book verbally assaulting, degrading, and ruthlessly tormenting Xu Mi Yu while obliviously looking down on everyone from his ivory tower of privilege.

Even after they have s*x after both being drugged, he treats the heroine with repulsed contempt the next day. As if his torrent of verbal and emotional abuse wasn't horrific enough, he repeatedly sets her up to suffer for his twisted amus**ent under the guise of "helping" her. His ego is so massively inflated, he cannot fathom acknowledging when he's grievously wronged her based on arrogant misperceptions. Rather than have an ounce of self-awareness of his monstrous bullying, he chronically rationalizes and justifies his despicable behavior.

Tragically, up to where I could stomach reading, this emotionally stunted man-child showed zero growth or remorse for his incalculable cruelty toward Xu Mi Yu and others. The prospect of her hard-won journey of self-actualization being "rewarded" by falling in love with her tormentor is not just a ludicrous injustice, but a sickening romanticization of abuse that had me furiously tempted to hurl my iPad against the wall.

[collapse]

The only slight redemption is the translation quality becoming so weirdly AI-sounding, I almost thought I was reading Korean-SAT English questions. It gave me such a headache which was somehow preferable to comprehending the offensive damage this story inflicts. I rate it a hard 3/10 solely for the wasted potential - it could have been an uplifting tale of overcoming toxic familial relationships through perseverance. Instead, it plunges into misery p*rn glorifying the male lead’s dominance in its most vile, nightmarish form. <<less

This is a tragedy, not a drama but a tragedic use of the brain... The cowardly and pushover mentality of the FL, I really can´t stand it. And worst, I can't understand it or have some simpathy with her. wHAT JOURNEY OF SELF GROWTH! BAH! At the end she still finds her self confidence in a man, she still hasn't learn to protect herself and she's still being shielded... I really hate how this is described like a growth story.

This is a story of an initially flawed woman who later blossomed into her own, outside of the (ex-) husband and family's control. To be honest, you'll probably feel frustrated and annoyed as you follow along her journey like I did, if you're rooting for her to snap awake and stand up for yourself. But the redemption arc came in the form of tremendous growth, both personally and professionally, as the chapters progressed.

An adult romance in a workforce that's easy to read, easy to empathise with! It's a definite 爽文... more>> (shuǎngwén).

Also sharing the original author's words:

"The original intention for creating a character with flaws irritating enough to make her detestable, was that I wanted to grow alongside such a character once, to rebuild my heart once—Could such a character grow later on to become likeable to everyone?

If she could do it, I felt like it would hold a different significance for me too. It was like I myself would no longer fear being disliked in future either for having flaws, because I could also grow, change and rebuild myself. And most importantly, finding my own self—how "I" am seen by others is unimportant, what’s important is how “I” see myself; “I” need to become a confident and independent person." <<less

A fantastic refreshing read admist all the current rebirth/transmigration options. Realistic and often heartfelt tear jerking journey of a woman who despite being not typically young and fantastically beautiful, grew to respect and love herself for her own worth. From a neglectful family and taken-for-granted marriage, she grew to be strong whilst retaining her humane and empathic character.
Rather than ‘earning’ and climbing the ladder to the ML’s love, it’s more than she taught him what love means and made him more human through love.
A favourite to re-read!

I kinda like the story. It is about growing to be a better self or freeing your self from your inner struggle. But you might find it boring/tipical with patriarcal family background and mistress or how the FL couldn't break away from her toxic family.

I read this novel from the translation blog/web but the translator sometimes mixed the name of the FL with FL's sisters. The name of FL sometimes is Xu Miyu, Xu Miya, Xiu Miyu it's confussing so I hope the translator could fix it. So the readers... more>> could have a better experience. <<less

This was so good. It's been quite a while since I've come across a novel that could remain accurate in the portrayal of real life while providing a good storyline. It made me feel all the emotions; sadness, frustration, hurt, joy, hope, anger... you name it.

The first chapters and really all chapters that included her family's treatment or the challenges she had to overcome were difficult to read but the growth, development and maturity she acquired along the way and the way the ML and FL both had to confront... more>> their personal convictions and grow made this novel worth it. The romance is slow burn but the lessons learnt are even applicable to real life.

All in all the ML and FL had such positive influences in each others' lives and we can see how while they are different, they are also well complimentary and thus suited for each other. Definitely going to re-read this. <<less

Stunning. Absolutely blown away.

Be forewarned that this is a story with real character development. The ML and FL were very very flawed at the beginning and really not suitable for each other. There is a heavy dose of angst leading up to the resolution which comes about 10 chapters before the end. There isn't much of an extended epilogue but that doesn't take away from how well written this was. I was heavily reminded of the Pride and Prejudice [2005] movie but I know some are going to hate on... more>> me for making such a comparison.

I really appreciated the change that both ML and FL went through. Actual reflection and willingness to change which really was what sold it for me.

10/10 would recommend. <<less

I think this story is very good, even though at first I was not satisfied with the epilogue but it was a problem in me that wanted to know how the next happy days would go. In essence, this novel is very worth reading, as time goes by the characters have changes in themselves and are not monotonous.

I didn't expect to love this story, and at first was planning to skip it after the first 10 chapters. But as I read through it, I really enjoyed the growth both FL and ML had as individuals and as a couple. Both are inherently flawed people, but found through self-reflection (at the help of trusted people) that they needed to change in order to live full and happy lives. The story still had elements of a typical CN (ex. Shitty selfish/greedy family members, cheating exes & their tr*shy mistresses,... more>> cold a**hole-ish president + submissive employee story line, serious 1st/2nd time consent issues), but taking away from the questionable parts of the novel, how the FL learns and grows from these experiences is what makes this story so different from other typical CN stories. I highly recommend! Plus.. Its a relatively short read in comparison to other CNs that have tr*sh story lines and run over 1000 chapters.

Note* yes its clearly MTL, but not so bad that its an unbearable read. <<less

I actually like a story where the FL has to struggle through really hard odds, not sail through life because she has a golden finger or where there are odds that are easily overcome through the FL's extraordinary natural wits. This one seems more realistic, where the FL has a huge uphill battle for a long time and she doesn't completely change her character overnight. And any character development is gradual, without a complete overhaul in personality. So far, I don't really have much attachment to the ML, seems very... more>> bog standard cold handsome CEO type.

My main issue however is actually with the translation. This is very clearly edited MTL which is fine if the edits were up to mark. However, the edits wildly differs from chapter to chapter. The earlier few chapters were okay, although there were the occasional grammatical mistakes, incorrect pronouns, the translator confused which character was which, and sometimes the names were just completely wrong (a common issue when it comes to relying purely on MTL). I could still handle that level of mistake because it wasn't too frequent.

Somewhere midway through the novel, the translator seems to give up completely for some chapters and not edit much at all. A sample of what I'm reading: "A full eighty percent nights spent wide awake with remaining meager twenty percent light dozing at best only granted by pure physical depletion. Of course without proper nightly recharges attempt functioning normally business days proved equally hellish. It wasn't as if the globe itself halted spins accommodating his light. Affairs relentlessly churned apace.

Perpetual insomnia plus sleep deprived exhaustion through every sunrise yet still adamantly powering on handling responsibilities till limits got pushed nearing crashes.

Feeling one added straw might just utterly crush his spinal tenacity.

Now what do?"

Spinal tenacity?? Now what do?? Some passages are even worse than this and just sound very stilted and unnatural. I feel like I'm reading from the perspective of robots.

I'm not sure I can continue reading this novel with this level of translation which is a real shame. <<less
