MC: Xu Zhao

ML: Cui Ding Chen

It is a Time Travel, Cub Raising, Getting Rich, Yaoi with a little Romance.

It is mainly about life of MC and his son and his parents improving. MC did some business to earn money. The Romance is quite slow paced here.

Spoiler

Original owner got accidentally pregnant (by ML I think) and drops out of school. He has a timid personality and didn't like his son very much. When his sister-in-law tells everyone in the village that MC gave birth to a child himself out of wedlock, he jumps and dies after drowning in a river. P.S. It is not a MPreg world type, MC was just special.

To summarize a bit: MC transmigrates into another world, waking up as a poverty-stricken college dropout living on his parents' farm in the 1980s. He has a toddler son, the result of unexplained mpreg, and he starts a popsicle selling business with a neighborhood friend to earn much-needed cash. His friend's young uncle is business owner ML, who is grand enough to own a car in this era, but isn't on the level of a fairy tale domineering CEO. MC starts a small shop, then works his way up to... more>> greenhouse agriculture.

The kid is really cute and obsessed with cars. The rural conditions are stark (scum half-brothers who steal food, no electricity, no fridge, no phones, using handcarts to transport goods). Since there's farming, this story reminded me a lot of all those ancient peasant stories, but thankfully MC doesn't earn his fortune by selling hot sauce (like so many others do). But there are also more details about farming than I usually find in those novels, which was pretty cool.

It's a low-stress story where MC smoothly ascends and builds his business, transforming from a despised single parent to a respected pillar of his rural village, with a focus on cute kids and modern agriculture. <<less

First, thank you so much for the translator for brining this wonderful story to us. You are so diligent and professional in your release that you motivate me to work harder at my job :) Of course, I'm also greatful for the author who created this masterpiece.

FOR POTENTIAL READERS...

If you want to decide whether you want to read it or not based on reader comments, this is my personal opinion:

This story is for relatively matured audience who understand that romance is not always angst, lots of emotions, or even pouring... more>> your heart out to convey your feelings for each other. There are no sacrifices of body and soul to prove the undying love. Unfortunately, most readers like the unrealistic types like TGCF or characters like Lan Wangji (don't get me wrong, I also enjoyed those), so they question "where is the so called slow burn that you see in the tags?" (My answer - there is if you have the capacity to understand it). If you can be satisfied with real-word love where people co-exist, find comfort in each other and eventually understand that they can be good companions, this book is definitely for you.

There is no US TWO vs. THEM trope that you usually see in these genres where the MC is shunned by every member of his family and meets the ML to build his own nest. So, romantics who like that kind of plots where you dream of having a guy who only has you in his eyes, you will definitely get disappointed. But I like to see realistic plots where you experience all kinds of love like familial love, friendship and so forth.

Though I came for the farming tag, there is a lot of business planning and implementation. But, nothing is overdone so you never feel bored. For instance, when the MC starts his first business, the author writes about how he plans, sells, catches customers etc. However, later we only read the outcomes like if it succeeded or failed.

The best part is the kid for sure. If you like small kids, you will definitely love love love their adorable interactions (milky voice he he he). I need a Sanwa in my life.

It's one of the best I've read and I've been reading novels for 10 years now :) <<less

It got way too repetitive. The child was the worst part. In the beginning, the kid was cute but I had to stop reading because he became annoying. The interactions were basically all the same: we get it, the child is clingy, narcissistic, wants to eat all the time, and likes cars. It was one thing to establish the child's character and then it's another to keep repeating the same conversations over and over again. It's not funny and it's not adorable. I was surprised too because at the point... more>> I was reading, this novel was rated 4.2. I really don't know why its that high. <<less

Came here for Adult, Mature, Romance and Yaoi genre. These genre are my fav, my glass of sweet wine. There's nothing heavy, I thought mayhap some 'underworld' or gangs things or perhaps some 'dark history' but heck there were none hahahaha. Just a family quarrell, jealousy from the 'no account X lover' and simple daily things. Alright.. I'm gonna put on some spoiler here but 1st.. year 1980s... is it really considered ancient time? Hahahaha.. Love at first sight? Gosh.. the tags are really misleading!!

*our MC transmigrated to the year... more>> 1980s, a single parent with 2 year old son and conflict within the 'poor' family and thus.. with his modern knowledge, our MC embark on the journey of making a fortune by doing few small bussiness including making and selling ice-cream, mooncake and such. This story remind me of 'Accompanied by a fool to do farming' in some way and I much prefer the later compare to this one because at least the ML did his share of burden from the very start*

There's no 'slow burning romance' that makes your heart trembles or warm if you came for that. Smart couple?.. they're smart indeed but I don't really see how they sync until almost the end of the story. So about this so called 'slow romance' tag.. to me.. the tag itself is almost non-existance in the whole story.. if you got me

I thought the ML nephew was our ML in this story, being he was most close to MC in the beginning to almost half of the story, I mean.. the chemistry was there.. Where was the 'love at first sight here? One night stand, yeah (revealed later at ch 110+ something) So None. Even the confession in ch 90+ was too empty and hollow for me. Both MC and ML know they slept together and that small bun is theirs in ch 110. Dont mind me, I dont get the feel of 'ML aura' int this story which means he was the same like any other supporting character in the story, none special

I don't mind reading a journey to glory sorta story even the one without 'romance'. To be honest, the genre's added in the introduction of this story really dissapoint me, I was like.. what the f**k? I came to read this just so I know how smart the MC mind is in doing popsicle and mooncake bussiness? Or how he mend his daily life with his son, dealing with his bros and parents caring? And the romance.. I think if you gotta have an ML in the story please at least dont write him like a chipsmore 'now you see.. now you don't. At least.. let me feel he is the ML, not just some insignificant supporting role.

** Aah.. So the Adult and mature genre has been removed.. 😁 <<less

I feel like I'm going crazy right now because I'm looking at the other reviews and all everyone can praise is the kid being their favorite part of the whole novel and him being the most realistic/sweet kid. But for me he was the worst part of the novel. Like at first I thought he was sweet, a little foolish but a decent child, he seemed like a good depiction of an actual child sweet but also annoying lol. But I got a bit icked by how often the author... more>> would have him rip his threadbare clothes and talk about his branch and berries or his bum in the early chapters. Maybe that should have been my warning sign that I wasn't gonna be a fan. Because every moment I considered cute was worn away by his seemingly bottomless pit behavior. Almost every time the kid is on screen he wants to eat, he's gnawing on his own hands / drooling like a dog for food, or he wants to eat again because he sees other eating - as if he didn't just eat a sentence or two ago. Maybe you could say this is because they had a hard life and he needs to adjust but at the point I am in the story you'd think they'd cut down on that behavior but they dont. Instead he's coming off as more spoiled (& being spoiled by everyone even if the author tries to make it like they're teaching the kid something, theyre not) and very clingy to the point of hindering, maybe he gets less annoying and we actually see him being smart beyond him being good at repeating words but at this point I can't. Maybe I'm too used to the usual maturity that kids (even the young ones) have in these types of novels. He's making it hard to continue, I liked the slow burn and wanted to know how XZ got knocked up and how the relationship blossomed into a proper romance instead of a one sided affection vs oblivious guy. Because at first I was more invested in XZ's friend being the ML since he was nice and supportive without really expecting a romance but he was always willing to trust and step up with XZ. But I do like the ML's initial from the shadows help/praise from the outside of XZ's intelligence that turned into personally helping. XZ's plans are smart but he understands his limits especially with money & resources and plans things out within the parameters which in turn makes his success more satisfying than if he automatically had a golden finger. <<less

The MC is really hard working in this story. He finds himself with a family and a baby in a farming community that's in poverty. He is looked down upon by his half-brothers but not his parents.

The MC decides to take the baby as his own and make money to feed and clothed themselves. He decides to join and then start a business with an old classmate from his school days. Wich is how he finds the dad of his baby. Who is the uncle of his classmate.

The story is... more>> of the MC taking care of his son and himself. It's really sweet how we see him raise his son and getting a better life for his family (mom and dad included). We do get the full story on how the baby came to be. I recommend if you want to see child rasing, the baby is hilarious to read about. <<less

The translation was pretty good, however, I just couldn't get into the novel.

It had all the components that I generally like but I didn't love it. I didn't mind the excruciatingly slow romance all that much, but MC had better chemistry with ML's nephew tbh. Also, I just couldn't like the child till the end. The author states that he is cute over and over, almost as if they are trying to brainwash the reader into agreeing but no, he isn't cute. He's that bear child who will insist on... more>> doing things his own way, never ever learning to follow the rules. Why would he when he never faces consequences? I'm not saying beat him up, but if one moment you say it's wrong but you never reinforce the idea because you think he's cute, he'll keep doing it over and over, as we see throughout the novel. You as parents and grandparents find it cute but will others? How will he socialise? He's so stubborn and will do things his way regardless of what you say, even if it's dangerous. No one likes interacting with such kids, even less with the adults that they will grow into.

Small pet peeve, the villagers -
Spoiler

I really don't get why he tolerates the nosy people who constantly badmouth and undermine him. Over and over. He's way too nice to them.

It's slice of life. make money and raise child If you love cute bun, this novel is for you. It fun to read. Real romance start around chapter 80 and I dont like it lol. If you have secondary male syndrome prepared your heart. ML is cunning, big bad wolf and he hate kid (he not my cup of tea because he hate kid) his word and deed for me it very hateful and hurtful. But if you don't think too much he just the same kind of ML in... more>> nc novel we can find it every where.

I give you spoiler in detail here why I dont like him

Spoiler

ML know MC from his nephew talk about MC. I think he know about his nephew feeling but he don't care and go for it even he date another boy for 3 years, he just break up with him without reason then he go after MC like stalking. Before he fall in love he don't care how poor MC is, he never helping and after love he just go for MC, he don't care about kid. He don't have ability to love kid not his own.

For me, MC is the one to froce ML try to love his kid and it's so fake and pretending. But MC just love that rich and handsome man so he believes in it... 🙄🙄🙄

He froce /steal kiss, dont care the child. No respect (i guess it normal in nc novel so... It's fine?)
He block his nephew out the part I hate the most in this novel is when ML tell his nephew that MC want man who can support, backing up have power etc not just company... I feel like dear auther spit savila on her/his own work. MC try hard and do business I reading for 90 chapters and he say MC want golden thing. Really? lol

And last but not last is 2 years past and ML still financial support the boy who broke up just because they slept together once. And I think all of you who dare to read spoiler can guess that one time is a lie and who ML slept with.

ML has too many red flag 🤣🤣🤣

I dont mind this non sense if the body owner not die once.

I really like how our MC is adaptable to life and accepted everything, ML isn't the typical overbearing or the husky type but portrays how ppl in rl would be.

Spoiler

outwardly saying that he can't bear children, looks and personality is a factor but slow changed although out the story.

The buns are there, always there which is a good point because in some novels even though it says mpreg or child raising, the child is somehow forgotten. The baby is like my sister, adorable when awake but more lovely when sleeping hehe.

Heartwarming, a new view on transmigrating, it was a slow burn for me, misunderstandings and a very big HE. <<less

This story is sweet and full of warmth. The story focus more on the MC building up his career and saving his family from poverty than the actual romance, which I find refreshing. I'll take back what I said, since after chapter 50 or so, the romance is very abundant, and I was practically fed non-stop with dog food. 😂 However, the story is still very good. The romance is not greasy, and it is surprisingly to my taste. The author has done a wonderful job in keeping the overall pace and vibe consistent throughout the story. The characters are also pretty realistic and likable. I enjoyed reading it a lot.

The MC is very strong and independent. He is brilliant in doing business. He is also very filial to his parents and responsible for his child. Both his personality and ability are definitely 10/10. Moreover, the MC practically built his career from the ground all by himself, without using golden finger nor having any background (although the ML is indeed rich and powerful, he didn't help the MC at all (maybe barely?) in his start up period, and everything is done by MC's own efforts) he's incredible.

Xiao Fan is also very intelligent and extremely adorable. ❤️ He's probably one of my most favourite child characters out of all the novels I've read so far (and I read a lot). He's smart and mischievous but not annoying at all. If I were to have a kid, I also want a kid like him, maybe less talkative, tbh. He's such a good child.

The ML is also very nice. He is supportive, responsible and understanding, mature and not overbearing (thank god, I am so sick with those overbearing MLs). I really love the fact that he didn't spoon-fed the MC in terms of work and finance, but instead just occasionally point out some flaws and then help out in the critical moment. I think this is him showing trust in MC's ability. It's so sweet. Personally, I think the ML is very charming this way, and he is very suitable for the MC. They both are such a sweetheart. 🥺
Spoiler

at first, I was a bit disappointed because I kind of want MC to be with Qingfeng tbh. I know the ML is far more superior and outstanding (and handsome) than his nephew, but I still prefer one with simpler mind, and childhood sweetheart is cute. 😢 I also dislike to see family members (who were in harmonious) crash for a man. This is sad. Fortunately, everything turned out fine and they didn't really fight to death for the MC.

A very cute novel.

I think I got very bored after awhile because I ended up skimming a TON after the MC's business picks up. It's definitely heavily focused on slice-of-life and the little kid. I feel like the kid's antics take up about 60% of every chapter.

Nothing against kids but seriously reading the author write 3-year old the kid fighting to look at himself in the mirror and putting on beauty cream x100 times was not very enjoyable...

Spoiler

also the kid is seriously unrealistically written LOL I guess that's a common problem in kid-focused novels... MC's kid reads more like 5-7 yr old child instead of 3

[collapse]

I really enjoyed the work / growing business part of it. MC is very smart but also not too OP, so he works hard to get his business started up. His efforts into market research and test runs were very realistic and made the business feel very believable.

Also the falling-in-love part was written very well. It's different from other novels where overbearing ML looks for MC unilaterally...

Spoiler

MC and ML fell in love without knowing what they shared in the past

[collapse]

And yea, the part where the ML suddenly accepted his child after finding out there was blood relation was a bit awkward... I think the author should have written it more gradual, but it might be the author's own prejudices taking root (CN culture obsesses over the whole v**ginity thing and it's common to also treat stepkids very badly so it's seen as amazing if you don't abuse your stepkid, low standards ikr?)

Translation was very good! <<less

🚨WARNING!!🚨 If you cant stand annoying and whinny children then dont read.

I get it, the child of the MC is a 3 years old kid but the author sometimes makes him wiser than his age but then most of the time his behaviour really annoys me the most because of how repetitive it was. The author likes to repeat the same old script, its like the kid barely has any growth in term of character. Also, the MC barely try to be strict with him and when he did, it... more>> would fall flat.

Like- I know kids are annoying, I have my own life experiences, but the author magnify it and turn it up to 50% more. Kids in real life is not THIS annoying. I cant even force myself to finished the novel and I HATE not finishing what I read.

I dont get how some of the reviews said that the kid act like a kid. I dont see it and if you saw it, then good for you cause, I just cant. Im giving warnings to those that cant stand the same old dialogue being repeated. <<less

It's an excellent story and it is well translated. It's a story of two men in alternative reality China where men marry men and men can give birth so do not be misled by the '80s word in its title. None of it is real 1980's in real China.

Two kids one of whom has an eating disorder, or the author makes it look so. Every chapter we are forced to read about his gluttony and fatness and his pipi, testicles or butt. End of story.

(Updated: 2nd Reread - 02/26/2023) Childcare and Poor-to-Rich Slice of Life novel! This is my second time reading it and I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time I read it. Back then, I read it till the end and gave it a 3.6/5 rating. My impression is still the same now (though I raised the rating to 3.75/5. I think this novel is a very good, short and fluffy novel. It's quite simple and some parts are handled kind of clumsily, but it hit... more>> all the important points and delivers some pretty good feels.

___________

SUMMARY: MC (Xu Zhao) transmigrates into the 1980s as a young single father with a 2yo son. He finds himself in pretty dire straights: having recently dropped out of school, a too-thin baby, unsupportive older brothers, and no money in sight. But, soon enough, he finds some use of his modern sensibilities in order to make a name for himself and improve his and his son's livelihoods. The ML (Cui Dingchen) comes into the picture pretty early as the mysterious youngest uncle of the schoolmate that first helps MC off of his feet.

___________

THOUGHTS: The main focus of the novel is the poor-to-rich and childcare aspect. MC has to raise his new 2yo son while striving to make some money. Fortunately, the 80s is rich with opportunities! The novel is pretty chill and down-to-earth. Perhaps not the most exciting nor the most realistic. The author admits to some questionable choices as well in terms of character development and set-up. But, if you're looking for a fun, casual read with not to many ups and downs, then this is a good one to consider! [NOTE: The TL is not finished but the MTL is readable. The author writes very simply, and it shows in the MTL, which is more coherent than most. I'd say that it is about... 75% readable, whereas most MTL is around the 60% range.]

___________

CHARACTERS: 8.5/10

Xu Zhao (MC)

A gentle and hardworking man. His personality is very chill and down-to-earth. At first, he's a little dumbfounded by his new circumstances, but he adapts pretty quickly. A little too knowledgeable in certain areas, the author doesn't explain his background much. But overall, he's very likeable.

Cui Dingchen (ML)

Stoic and distant at first, but he warms up to both the MC and his son soon enough.
Spoiler

The author starts laying down foundations for him being the little baby's father pretty early, so~

[collapse]

Xu Fan

A show-stealer! The son of the MC~ He's only 2yo in the beginning but he's portrayed quite smart and adorable. Loyal to the MC to a fault, but also very similar to the ML.

___________

ROMANCE: 7.5/10

The romance in this novel is quite simple. Maybe mature is the better description? The MC is 21 at the start and the ML is 28. With a child between them, it's all about stability, not passion and big confessions. I thought it was quite sweet~ but it's undoubtedly more low-key than most.

___________

SETTING: 5/10

The setting is the 80s, but its ambigously so. I guess the 80s were a tricky time. If it were the 70s, then the setting would probably pay more of a factor. Here, the setting was mostly just to allow the MC to be able to make money. So, it doesn't feature much. Oh, and this is also a fantasy setting where menxmen is accepted (and men can give birth to children), so the BL aspect doesn't have much to do with the setting either. It's just accepted as a matter of course.

___________

PLOT: 7.5/10

This is definitely a slice of life story. We see the life of a single father working hard for his son and falling in love along the way. The pacing starts off very slow, before accelerating near the end.

___________

RATING: 3.75/5

Seems like a low rating but it's pretty high for me. Putting it into words, I'd say the novel is slightly better than average. A bit imperfect, but enjoyable to read regardless. I'm looking forward to rereading it when the TL is down in the future! (As mentioned, the first rating was 3.6, but I gave it an additional 1.5 now, making it 3.75/5 because I thought that the novel did a pretty good job delivering on a very simple but fluffy family-feels novel). <<less
