In her previous lifetime, her father fought for the country but was killed; ten thousand arrows pierced him to death. Her elder sister protected her innocence and lost her life.

But she produced and collected all the wealth in the world for him.

Even so, her eldest brother was forced to death, dismembered by five horses and he did not even have an intact corpse.

Her ten fingers were chopped off, her wrists broken, and she was beaten to death.

Her mother said, “My little A Ning, mother hopes that in this life someone will be there to treat you like a treasure, block all the pain for you, cover all the wind and rain for you”.

But her mother would never know that because of her mistakes when she died, the bones of her body were shattered, and poking through her flesh.

So many glaringly obvious logical fails.

We're told that the MC was able to earn 1.8 million in one year by selling incense only in the capital and that the annual military budget is 1 million. A country can have widespread poverty and poor infrastructure, but without a strong army that can provide stability, the people who have liquid wealth would flee to richer and more stable countries. Those rich nobles wouldn't be staying in a country and buying MC's incenses. In ancient China and nearby asian countries, merchants/businessman are heavily... more>> taxed. If these merchants have the money to buy that much luxury goods from MC on an ongoing basis, then the treasury shouldn't be empty.

I can accept that MC can earn a lot of money, but if the emperor is only willing to spend such a small amount on the military, you would think the status of generals is very low, the country is going to be conquered by other nations, etc. You can only have so many wars where you starve your soldiers to death before there's no one left to fight your battles. The author could have at least say, her incense is being purchased wholesale by merchants and selling it to her other countries. Or, this is country where the emperor is very weak (and limited power to collect taxes) and nobility and merchants have much higher purchasing power. We're later told that emperor is powerful enough to order other people to not investigate MC's incense shop, which is conflicting with the idea of a poor emperor that can't afford to pay the military and officials dare to go against the emperor without impunity to get rich. The author doesn't even the provide the flimsiest of rational for this.

Also, MC's mother is the only one that knows where the family's incense recipe book is hidden, so if she dies, that priceless book might be lost forever. Her mother's extended maiden family knows this and yet they turn her mother away when she asks them for a place to live when she's kicked out by her husband's family, which leads to her mother's death.

(How does MC's mother not have a single friend that she can turn to temporarily when her husband is away is also mind boggling. We're also told that many people know about the famous incense book, and yet no one offers MC's mother a place to live in order to get the book? Even if they can't MC's mother to give them the book, they would still profit so much just by having MC's mother make the incense herself. They're not limited to only two options: help MC's mother and risk putting themselves in danger or don't help MC's mother and risk losing a good opportunity to get rich. They can just slip MC's mother money and get the best of both worlds.)

MC's mother dies when she's 4-5 years old. Instead of asking MC about this recipe book right after her mother dies, these relatives, who visit her during her childhood multiple times, wait over a decade later to trick her into marrying this scumbag and then tortured her for many years in the original timeline to try get the location of this recipe book.

Young children are so impressionable and yet in the original timeline her father never takes measures to guard his favorite child from being brainwashed by relatives that caused his wife's death. How could anyone be that s*upid? In the Rebirth of the Malicious Empress, MC's extended family is smart enough to keep up the pretense of being a loving family to MC, and that's why her parents entrust her upbringing to them. In this story, these relatives are so brainless and blatant about being bad right in front of MC's father, but MC's father lets his impressionable daughter spend lots of time alone with them.

MC blames herself for falling for their lies, but she was a little kid, and her siblings were also kids. The adult responsible for their well-being leaves them in a snake den and decides to not leave behind any instructions on how to keep his children safe. It's even worse that the author mentions multiple times that her dad doesn't need respect these relatives of his because they're not his parents, but in the original timeline, he just leaves his children alone with the culprits behind his beloved wife's death... He's already had the lesson that his wife, an adult, wasn't able to protect herself from his family, how can he possibly think its okay to leave his weak-minded children alone with his incredibly s*upid relatives? What does he think he will happen to his children if he dies in a battle or if there's even just rumors that he died?

The author will straight up say the antagonists are s*upid, but that just makes our protagonist and her family, which fell for their traps in the original timeline, look brainless, which I don't think its the author's intention.

Don't expect this main character to have Shen Miao from Rebirth of the Malicious Empress's level of intelligence. For example, MC gets kidnapped by her great-aunt. No one knows that her great-aunt has her and her great-aunt hasn't hurt her. She just want to try to brainwash her using tactics that would only work on a little kid and eventually has to give her back to her dad. What is the wonderful plan that our MC comes up with instead of just biding her time? Kill herself. That's her great idea. She doesn't even spend a minute to consider what will happen to her older siblings and her dad that she plans on saving this lifetime based on her knowledge of the future. None of her loved ones know where she is. At most, they can only suspect that she was kidnapped by her great-aunt, but once she dies and they bury her corpse, there's no conclusive proof.

Edited to add: After re-reading, I saw the chapter where it says she's trying to trigger the hidden incense body type by bleeding herself out, but if she fails, no one knows where she is. Couldn't she have just pretended to accidentally injure herself in her own room, where there's a much better chance of someone finding her? It was pure luck that her relatives found her before she died.

In the first half of Rebirth of the Malicious Empress, Shen Miao pushes her evil relatives into the trap they set for her in her first life. This MC meets her cousin that participated in her multi-year torture and ruined her older brother's life. What does our MC to do? She gets her kicked out of the general's manor when she comes to visit her. That's it. If there's a time to self-harm to frame someone, this would be the time.

As of chapter 200, the worst thing that happens to the people that tortured her and older sister for several years is either nothing/being poorer. By chapter 200, several years have passed and she still hasn't tried try get revenge against her ex-husband or anyone else. She's 13 years old (older than her siblings who were expected to be responsible for the care of their youngest sibling by their father). She's had 9 years to take action. It's not like her ex-husband is an all-powerful emperor. We're told that she's the richest or one of the richest people in the capital by this point in time. Why doesn't she just hire an assassin to kill him?

She can enjoy spending time with her family and still get her revenge at the same time. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive. By letting them off for such a long period of time, they're out there and harming other innocent people. A kind person like the MC would want to avoid that. If she was portrayed as a person that's only concerned for herself and her family, then sure, it makes sense that she deal with her ex-husband and the other villains at her leisure. But, we're told that she's a person that cares a lot about the suffering of others. That she would continue to do nothing years after getting the power to deal with the villains is inconsistent with her character setting. That's why I think this is a logic fail on the author's part.

We're told that MC get divine punishment every time she changes the fate of others, any yet, there's no consequence to her saving the lives of thousands of soldiers. It comes off as a poorly-thought excuse for torture p*rn.

Which brings me to my next point, I skipped out all the drawn out torture parts in the novel. Those scenes also get copy and pasted a lot. The juxtaposition of the those scenes where the main character being slowly chopped up into pieces by her husband in the original timeline and the fluffiness and indulgent nature of the rest of story is jarring. If the author wants to write those scenes, it would have been better to put them later in the story, at the part where MC deals with her ex-husband, not next to the fluffy family scenes.

Back to my previous point, it makes no sense that MC would be okay letting her ex-husband run around, harming other people when she has the power to stop him. Its too much of a stretch of suspense of disbelief that a person who would treat his wife so horribly wouldn't have harmed others before her.

Other points are also beaten to death by the author. For example, for the silliest of reasons, everyone keeps having misunderstandings that MC's family is very poor despite all the previous incidents that show otherwise. We're also repeatedly told that no one ever tries to question the connection between MC's family and the most profitable store in the country. Many people know MC's mom's family was extremely famous for their incense and has a family recipe book, the incense store's storekeeper is MC's personal servant girl's mother, and MC has early access to the store's new products.

Much later on, past the first 200 chapters, the author decides to add a secret tunnel between the store and MC's home to explain how they're transferring the money and saying the emperor ordered people to not investigate the store. This is the same emperor who can't afford to feed his army without the help of a child. Every dozen or so chapters, author will mention again that MC's store has crushed the leading incense store.

I think this story would have been more interesting if there is no rebirth and MC and her siblings work together to figure out who is good and who is bad and navigating growing up without a mom and dad that has to be away most of the time instead. Of course, its much easier for author to write many chapters of one-sidedly OP MC doing stuff to improve her siblings' lives and solving their problems just from having a ton of money.

Despite those complaints, the family dynamics between her immediate family is very cute and that's most of the story up to where I stopped. I skimmed the novel up to chapter 200 and skipping ahead to see what happens later. At some point, starting before chapter 200, the author starts writing way too many reactions scenes from NPC-like characters where they spend entire chapters of thinking MC's family is poor and then another few chapters of them being overwhelmed by how rich MC's family is. It's like reading netizen reactions. <<less

Hey, this is Snow Pearl, the current translator of this novel.

(I've added this in Wattpad too!)

Up until now, I've read about 21 chapters, and so far it is really good. If you've liked the second chance novels like Malicious Empress, Ill-Fated consort, etc... then you'll definitely like this too. But, in the first chapter itself, the stuff was somewhat gory... And the MC's actions in her past life was really unlikable. But in the current life, she's definitely adorable and lovable.
Updated on 19/08/2020:

This is really my cup of tea. The mood change is also pretty natural in this story... Sometimes sad, sometimes it makes us angry, but suddenly we would be laughing... (This is really so good)

Spoiler

Little A Ning is a great master in making money... She makes all kinds of perfumes, incenses, and even makeup stuff too. She makes so much money and gives it to support the army and provides her sister with 10 miles of dowry.

One more thing, I hate Song Ming Jiang... I hate him, cuz he's an indecisive fellow who doesn't even have a backbone... He should just go Die!!! (It seems like he'll turn me into a cruel person)

[collapse]

Spoiler

I dunno if this counts as a spoiler, but: A Ning is really funny at times. When she's still a child, because she was cold, her wet nurse made her put on more clothes. So she became like a round ball, and she even rolled off once...

Most important info: The ML's name: Luo Heng Si (I guess so, but I'm not really sure??) Don't ask me why both MC's and ML's name have a similar ending, as I too want to know (Si in "Luo Heng Si" and Ci in "Shen Qing Ci")

[collapse]

Spoiler

Sometimes, even I feel that several incidents in this novel are similar to Malicious Empress, but still, I like this. Because A Ning is not Shen Miao. She handles things differently. Also, only a few situations are similar. Not everything. And even if the plot gets bad later on (I dunno if it will) I'll still read it out of my love for the characters, especially the FL...

[collapse]
After reading some more, I'll update the review.

And pls tolerate mistakes in the translations. And thanks in advance for any criticisms as it will help me improve the quality of the translation.

This novel is not that bad as the user @Fuyuneko has mentioned in their comment. I think he/ she might have misunderstood many things. And you can dislike any novel including this one... It is your own right. BUT, please don't give any misleading information. I don't blame it on you, because when we read the raws, we might not understand everything correctly.

Although there might be some flaws in this novel, which one of them does not? Even Malicious Empress has some (I like both this story and... more>> Malicious Empress very much, so I don't intend to take sides...) And I'd love this story just for A Ning and her family.

Spoiler

1. Aren't there countries in which the merchants and other rich businessmen earn more but their country is obviously underdeveloped? So how is it that when it comes to this story, it s unacceptable? How could the emperor spend money, if he himself didn't have it. All the corrupted officials can have money, but he didn't.. Isn't that just normal in some cases...? And yeah, such a country would be swallowed up by other countries. Isn't that what happened in her previous life? Her father went to battle and struggled. Even though he won a few times, he lost later and died in battle. Just because you read the raws and can't understand the novel in certain parts properly, you can't complain about it. (No offense here...)

2. Only the Lou family knows about the existence of the recipe book. Not the whole world. And even if the so-called Lou family asks her mother for the recipe book, is her mother so s*upid that she'd give them that? Also, at that point of time, there was a rumor that Shen Ding Shan might have committed treason. So, who in the world would dare to get associated with her or even buy incense buy from her even if she could somehow afford to get the ingredients to make incense?

3.I'm sorry, but what I couldn't tolerate was this part... A Ning wanted to be away from her loved ones when she cut herself (she did that not to kill herself but to transform her body into the hidden incense body type or something like that) She could only do that when she is away from her loved ones, as they would be blamed by her father when he returns and finds out that his daughter is injured. But if she lets her Great-Aunt kidnap her and if she gets injured when she's with them what'd happen? Her father would just blame her Great-Aunt. And that's just what she did. But, why is it that when it comes to that comment, it became a s*upid plan where the MC plans to kills herself just to escape from her Great-Aunt's clutches? (sorry, don't be offended...)

4. And has anyone thought about how Shen Miao from Military Empress got her knowledge? Mostly, it was from Pei Lan. And she had been the empress and had been the mother of 2 children. But A Ning? She wasn't an Empress nor she had anyone's advice. It was all her own knowledge. Not that I dislike Shen Miao or underestimate her. She has her own merits, but A Ning has hers too...

5.I'm sorry, but, why does everyone want to compare A Ning and Shen Miao for each and everything? Why should A Ning deal with everyone just like Shen Miao does? Just as I said before, A Ning is A Ning and Shen Miao is Shen Miao. Each have their own ways. Shen Miao dealt with everyone just as they came. But A Ning left them alone for some time. Are they even worth her time? And where can they run off to even if they wanted to? For all the things she and her family suffered in the previous life, she blamed everything on her s*upidity. Even though she wanted to take revenge, she cherished her time with her family and wanted to be closer to them in this lifetime. And A Ning was reborn at the time when she was 4 years old. Not like Shen Miao who went back to when she was 15. She could only do certain things at that age. And did that user even read fully? He/ she has read only until some 200... or 400 chapters. A Ning eventually dealt with that evil girl Lou Xi Yin in later chapters and not just chased her away.. why don't you read the novel fully and see? (No offense here too... But if you feel offended, I'm very very sorry for that. I just want to clear up the misunderstandings caused)

6. And when Shen Ding Shan's children were young, he was with them. He didn't go to war. Only after the twins were somewhat older did he go to war. So he thought that the twins would take care of the young A Ning. (Remember, in ancient china even 12-year-olds can grow up responsible...) But A Ning was brainwashed before itself that her mother died because of the twins. So how would she not resent them?

7. And finally the incense store part... The news was circulated that the store was sold off to someone the General's family knew and so they would get the things before everyone else. Why would they doubt the Shen family? Just because A Ning's mother knew to make incense? When the store opened, A Ning was only about 6 years old and her mother died very earlier. How would she be able to make incense at such an age..? Only her family and their servants knew of this secret. Also, would anyone even believe such a thing if it was not witnessed by them with their own eyes? Also, the incense that A Ning made was of even higher quality than the ones made by her mother (because she has transformed her body type into that whatever body type)

[collapse]

And this comment was not to target anyone. It was just to clarify the misunderstandings that might have been caused by that comment. So please don't take offense. And I like both Shen Miao and A Ning. They are both unique in their own ways. <<less

I'm at around ch 1290 MTL chapters into this still ongoing series as I'm writing this review so take that into consideration.

This series started off very strong and I enjoyed the family dynamics between the FL, her father, brother and sister very much. Granted there is some parts you have to take without considering it too deeply like ... more>>
Spoiler

how FL can start a business at age 6 and earn enough money to feed the entire army without anyone really questioning it and sort of just shrugs it off as part of her talented bloodline.

[collapse]
but you are reading a novel with the FL returns back to her younger self, so suspension of disbelief shouldn't bother you too much. On the other hand, the family dynamics are so heartwarming, it really outweighs those little things. Like seriously the first part of the novel is really good and I would rank it high up there with Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage.

Sadly, once FL starts to grow out of her family and the revenge plot as well as the ML starts to be the main story line, the story starts to turn to more of the cliche rebirth/historical novels. I don't find the ML stands out in any particularly interesting way beyond being the usual super powerful, super handsome, and devoted-to-FL Male Lead. My main issue with the ML is actually how utterly useless his guards are. Compared to other novels' ML guards/subordinates, these guards makes you question why he even bother keeping them around.
Spoiler

Like seriously, the number of times the villain is able to slip into the mansion to see the FL, the number of times they failed to protect the FL, and the fact that the FL actually saves them once.

[collapse]

And sadly in the latter half of the novel, it starts getting filler-y and you can definitely tell the point where the story jumped the shark. It makes me sad because the first part of the book is so strong. I think this would have been a much better story if it had ended sooner around
Spoiler

the coronation of the fourth prince, maybe at ch 915.

There's only 4 translated chapters available as of writing this review, yet so far it is very good read. The mood and style of the writing can easily hook a reader, and as a reader who's very picky of stories (as I've read countless stories online), I always look for the mood of each words produces. Readers, casual or heavy, needs to give story a chance.

Thank you TL for giving us the chance to read and explore this book. Hopefully we will see more and that you enjoy the story... more>> as well.

Definitely worth a read and waiting! <<less

Quite good at the earlier chapter but got really dragging for the rest of the story. I'm tired just by reading it.

I like the interaction of the FL with other characters when she is a child, but her personality get really depressing the more she grow up.

There is a lot of dramatic situation, while the story it's not categorized as cringey but sometimes it got annoying how everything just get dragged like that. The whole royal and country situation are quite NG too.

Unfortunately I'm not able to read further as... more>> the rough translation are hard to understand.

  1. *Just a warning ⚠️ this is really depressing story, there is a lot of self infliction of harm on the FL personality, either in physical term or mentally term.

I'm currently on chapter 12 and I already hate the father. I mean, he clearly so bias with A-ning. He almost forgot that he had 2 other children and only pampering A-ning. I hate the character like this. No matter how much you f*cking love A-ning's mother, you can't treat your child differently. And you also abandoning your mistress. The mother of your twin child.

I understand if you treat your mistress differently than your wife. But you can at least go find her once a week. Not totally never visit... more>> her. Remember she is YOUR CONSORT. Your mistress never make a single mistake to you. She just want to fulfill your wife command. You can't give her a cold shoulder.

She is also the victim here. And your twins child too. But you act like you are the great father and protagonist character. Pfftt... protagonist my-ass. <<less

Reader coming through
Let's just say that with 2500 chapters it's a bit tiring to read until the end, I skipped a lot of chapters for the second half.

I really love the novel until some hundred chapters after her married life (about 1400 chapters). Because after it starts to be a bit dull (for me).

On the first half, she gets to be rebirth, and decides to sacrifice herself for her loved ones who she destroyed because of her ignorance. It's really interesting how she gets a rebound whenever she change the past. That's... more>> my favorite moment because it means that she succeeded. And at about 600-800 chapters she already saved everyone but her husband. And that's when I say it gets a bit dull: mission accomplished at about 88%, and I still have 2000 chapters to read... xOx

Spoiler

So why? Because their marriage should be to help her husband from death and her to help the rest of her disasters so that all the previous effort are not annihiled. However it's not clear when he died because he survived her death, she's 18 at this point and she died at 26. 8 years to go, which are often filled with her doing good deeds to get good karma and survive the change of fate. If we got a big progression of the love story, why not but after her saving him from being defigured like in her past life, he decides to stop avoiding her and treat her like a true wife so no emotional knots anymore (just me waiting for the bad luck to pass to see her having a happy family).

But then she gets kidnapped or harmed by her ex-husband or Shen Yueshu way too much. The most s*upid time is when she gets taken by Qi Yuan, got amnesia, and the NEPHEW of the Emperor, come to him "my girl is in your hand, give her back". Qi Yuan: "Ok but you give me a letter to absolve my guilt for your death, let me imprison you to torture you before killing you. Oh and nobody should know, and you won't get any proof that I do have her.". Of course NOT! I've got an army of martial guards, I myself know martial art, I've got a Divine doctor who can knock you off in a second, I can device many plans for an easy evasion, call the police to put you in prison for sequestrating my royal wife and you're just a small official while I'm just below the princes so I can pulverish you with just my little finger.

Yes. That's how I though a smart man from the royal family who could easily drug the 3rd Prince without trace would react. Not go along and get saved by the imprisonned wife. Doesn't attacking twice a royal member punishable of death? Same for Shen Yueshu ('cause Shen Ning is royalty now)

That's when I understood that the Author would recycle the villains.

Which is sad because when she saved her family she was really good and smart. We got a few villains like Wenqing Hou, Prime minister's manor, Huang's family and Lou Ziling. All got retribution pretty fast and hard. But after she divorced Qi Yuan, she seems just too passive. She poisonned them (not really on purpose because it's with her blood) but it a slow one who doesn't seems to have any other effect that accelerating the age process. Can't you at last get one that can make them incapacited for months or years? She's also a genious incense maker, can't she create poisonnous one?

The weird thing is that she's far more powerful with her husband's power, her father's army, her wealth, her talent, her brother weapons... but she gets stuck with brainless villains. It's unrealistic that she have to keep them alive to strike the third prince when she can use other strategies.

[collapse]

I advice you to read it for the first half of the story, and then if you don't care for the slow romance and the not so good shemes you can keep going until the end. <<less

It's a 3.5

It is such a sad heart wrenching story. There is a lot of physical and mental abuse so far. At this point I am not sure who is the ML. But the FL story is an absolute tragedy. There are illogical things in the novel but those are in periphery and didn't interfere with my ability to enjoy it. There is no romance this is more a novel about redemption because the FL in her first life made so many mistakes so it is not much focused about... more>> revenge though she takes revenge. I can't help but pity the FL I have never read such a story where the FL is tortured every 10 chapters. Maybe I'll come update my review once I finish reading this novel

so I am at chapter 1200. At this point, there was a bit of romance but barely anything. This novel is really not a romance novel. I am debating continuing the read as the plots are repetitive and I feel more and more that the author must hate the FL.
I didn't complete the rest of the chapters (1500 seems more like a slice of life and I am really not interested by the kids nephews etc. Story) because of all the long unnecessary stuff I am retracting it to 3. The first 1000 chapters were really interesting. The remaining ones not so much <<less
