Jiang Shulan is the only daughter in the Jiang family after three generations, pampered to the skies by her parents and older brother. However, because of her excessive beauty, she attracts the attention of a second-generation scoundrel.

Introduced by others, Shulan goes on a blind date with a factory director from the city who is divorced and has a child, only to unexpectedly see barrage comments.

[Why marry a divorced man? Besides suffering from premature balding and kidney deficiency, you’ll end up raising someone else’s child and won’t even be allowed in the family tomb in the end!]

Shulan: ?

Only then does she realize that she is nothing but a stepmother in a period drama. Her role is to serve her husband and raise his children until their biological mother returns, at which point she’ll be kicked out.

Upon sobering up, Shulan looks at the extremely superior blind date in front of her. “I heard that older men are prone to premature balding and kidney deficiency. Do you have those issues?”

Zhou Zhongfeng comes from an excellent family background, a young talent. Upon returning home, he receives a telegram from his grandfather who is critically ill, hoping he will marry and have children.

He was introduced to a young intellectual who graduated from Peking University and served as a sent-down youth in the countryside, the other party is knowledgeable and gentle. But upon meeting, he’s drenched in curses?

Zhou Zhongfeng: ?

Ten minutes later, a few lines of barrage comments float up again.

[The network is slow, it takes ten minutes for messages to go out, the barrage is late.] [Did she mistake her blind date? But he looks familiar, wasn’t he the top-tier character introduced later?] [Wait a minute! Does Shushu know that he’s a big shot, so she’s trying to seduce him in a special way?]

Jiang Shulan: ?

Jiang Shulan accidentally and unexpectedly succeeds in a blind date with the top-tier big shot, Zhou Zhongfeng.

The tone of the barrage suddenly changes.

When she goes to the post office to buy stamps, Shulan, who has OCD, looks down and sees thick dust under the table, frowning slightly.

Barrage comments: [Does she know there’s a stack of valuable stamps under the table?] Shulan: ?

On the train to the island, she accidentally bumps into a woman holding a child and apologizes to her.

Barrage comments: [Shulan must know this woman is a bad person trying to swindle the leader’s grandson, so she deliberately bumped into her!] Shulan: ?

When the twins are three years old, she picks up her high school textbooks that have been gathering dust for many years and educates the children about cultural literacy.

Barrage comments: [Oh no, this woman is preparing for the college entrance exam again!] Shulan: ?

Years later… Shulan, with the help of the barrage, marries a big shot, gives birth to a genius, tops the college entrance examination, and becomes a winner in life. When others ask her for the secret, she just smiles and remains silent.

Barrage comments (tears streaming down): Kneel and shout 666 to the big shot!

So this story isn’t bad. It’s a rather typical living in the 80s story with a bit of development trope. Only thing is there is some fantasy elements like a barrage system: a barrage system is the comment section in China where viewers can see comments on screen during livestreams/shows. The FL has the ability to see the comments of viewers watching her life since she’s supposed to be in a novel. This part isn’t explained well though, like are the viewers watching her as if its a drama series?... more>> Where are this viewers from? Why does the barrage only appear occasionally? Why did it bind to the FL? Well it isn’t explained and since I stopped halfway I’m not sure if it ever does get explained.

Other fantasy elements is that a love rival also has dreams of the ori future of the FL. The FL’s ori husband also is reborn with memories of the past where he figures out in this lifetime he didn’t marry FL. One of the subplots of the story is we follow this arrogant couple.

ML is someone entirely new in FL’s life who she wouldn’t have encountered if it weren’t for the changes made due to the dreams and barrage system.

ML is also military so FL goes to live with ML on an island and this reminds me of another 80s novel where it focuses on the development aspect in the island.

That would’ve been fine for me to continue reading as I enjoy slice-of-life story. However the author loves conflict or drama with this particular character that weirds me out.

The FL’s pursuer Zheng Xiangdong. He is obsessed with her. In another novel he might’ve been a doting ML who does everything he can for his love. However in this novel, he is the FL’s nightmare. He stalks the FL and is adamant to marry her but he also doesn’t want to mistreat her so he will work hard to save money for her, buys the expensive bridal gifts for her... On FL’s wedding day to ML, this guy comes over and basically asks FL “why won’t you choose me” and FL honestly says she’s afraid of him. This guy vomits blood, gets so sad he wants to unalive himself. FL goes to him and tell him, “Treat yourself better. Be a good person from now on.” Because from the barrage she learns that this dude never got over his obsession and later dies young but leaves all his property to her in the novel. She feels sad for him but he’s really not someone she likes. FL then goes away to start a new life with ML. You’d think it ends there with this subplot but NOPE. Author writes that this guy has his hair turn white overnight due to grief, loses so much weight, and still goes to the FL’s parents home to do the chores FL usually does. Her family can’t stop this stalker. He even wants to go to the island where the FL is to bring her back and marry her. I mean, why can’t the author just let this guy go when the FL tells him to let go? Why must this obsessed stalker be a subplot for the story drama? I just don’t enjoy reading about it which is why I’m dropping it. This guy even teaches another dude to continue pursuing another married woman because of “love triumphing all”. Bruh.

Stopping here for now because I can’t take this drama. <<less
