The elders used to scold you if you blithely brought home something preowned by someone else, saying ‘You shouldn’t thoughtlessly bring in things from outside.’

They thought you might experience bizarre things if by chance that item had belonged to someone who had passed away. You might disregard this as superstition in this age where recycling is considered a virtue, but in truth, they were right.

How do I know this is true?

Because the item I have right now is one of those things.. And it’s not just to the degree of having a strange aura. It has something of a special ability.

Author Minsoo's first work (2014), his second being "Chemistry" (2016). Short for Poten (tial).
Strongly recommended if you're into magical realism and enjoy slice-of-life novels such as "Top Management".

SUMMARY
Semi-retired pro-gamer Kang Minho discovers that his family has a unique pyschometric ability to gain the abilities of a cherished object's previous owner. His mission: "To live the way he wants, as long as he doesn't commit crimes" =) And so begins his journey to becoming an all-round celebrity.

COMMENTS
An interesting slice-of-life novel from the author of "Chemistry", another incredibly whimsical novel if you haven't had the chance to read it. As with most magical realism novels, the world building is detailed and accurately portrays the life of modern day Korea. Totally gives you the feeling that you're deep in Korean culture with the MC strolling past the skyscrapers of Seoul, or quaint countryside villages.

The novel is chockfull of hilarious quips, Korean variety-show and pop-culture references that will definitely amuse readers who follow Korean entertainment. If you don't get it... well that probably accounts for the 1 star reviews.

Spoiler

Starcraft, Family Outing, Music Camp, Invincible Youth, 1 Night 2 Days.... the list goes ON!

[collapse]

The MC is a street smart, but bored young man post-20s who just left Korean military service.
Not a typical loser protagonist. Not a boy-scout either. He's personable, has a good sense of humor, works hard when he needs to, and very relatably enjoys his days off when he can just like normal people would. What's not to like?? And that's topped with a hilarious family and surrounding casts of believable characters from all walks of life, all complete with their own personalities, believable life-stories, goals and desires.

Spoiler

Conversation between MC and his dad
"But Dad.. should I save the world with this (power) ? Spider-man once said, 'With great power comes great ackk!'"

"What power and what responsibility?"
Minho, who was serious and earnest, covered the back of his head. Yoonhwan cl**ked his tongue as he began speaking to Minho.

"Punk, the responsibility isn't taken by a kid with powers, it's taken by the kids who are leading in the front. You can live the way you want to.... Minho, live your life doing everything you want to, except committing crime. But always take responsibility for your actions. Oh yeah. Don't forget to continue the family line."

"What about filial duty?"

"Your father's not that old, punk."

His father was a free-spirited, cool man.

MC meets Sora Oh, a popular girl group idol for the first time

Minho turned his attention to the rest of the facility, but as the makeup artist began attending to the canvas girl, his eye was drawn back to her face and he could not help but stare, transfixed. As more makeup was added on, the contours of her face became more prominent.

'Her eyes were small... But they became bigger?'

When the blush was done being thoroughly added on with a brush, her looks completely changed.

~~Her average looks which could be found anywhere on a bus or subway suddenly disappeared.

'A miracle! That was really magical!'

An idol that you would see on TV was sitting right in front of him.

Minho then understood. That, that could never be called makeup. That was just trickery.

'An idol should be angelic.'

The image of the girl that Minho had imagined while he was in the army popped like a bubble and disappeared. The source of motivation for soldiers was neither so sweet nor like cotton candy.

Slight negative is that it's not as polished as his later work "Chemistry", which can be expected.
MC's superpower is a little hard to grasp since it's not the typical psychometric ability of witnessing the previous owner's memories and solving crimes (Psychometrer Eiji!), but actually inheriting a portion of their abilities. It's a little of a stretch to use his psychometric abilities to become a celebrity, although oddly enough it does work out somehow.
But for author's first work it's pretty impressive. 4.5/5 stars.

This is a quite enjoyable light read, it has the vibe of Top Management since it's based on modern entertainment in korea but it's no too intense either. It's different on TM where it kept you on edge. Just like the descriptions says, MC has a superpower where he can do certain things with an item that owners cherished. It is OP for sure but the novel doesn't shine only for its superpower based plot. It shines in the everyday life conversation and the comedy it gives, makes you grin... more>> for minutes, smile and laugh. Most of all what this novel has good point is because of the MC, his thoughts are real life like reactions. How it gets extreme to a certain point which is ridiculous and funny since it is relatable to most people thought process. It also has the logic and hardship of an entertainment business does. So all in all I recommend reading this 3-4 chapters in and don't mind the low rating. <<less

Wasnt really sure what this novel was about judging by the name nor the summary. From what Ive read, the story is a korean-style 'rise to the top of the entertainment industry' story, similar to Top Management, where the protagonist has subtle powers that can break common logic but unlike Top management, he isnt the manager but the Star himself. 22 chapters isnt much at the momonet but it is quite entertaining and the chapters are long enough

Decent novel for its slice of life genre.

Slice of life is not really the genre I enjoy, I find it usually boring... so this novel is not really exception either. I would have rated this 3* if I just wanted to rate it based on my feelings, but this novel stays loyal to its genre tags: there is some comedy, mystery, romance, supernatural and slice of life... so I decided to be fair and gave it 4*.

I like korean novels and showbiz is a genre I enjoy, so I was... more>> happy to find this one but likely because of the expectations and previous gems that I have read (top managmet, god of music) I was somewhat disapointed.

This is okay slice of life read and if one likes that genre then go ahead and read this, me too will continue to read this ocacionally when I want to read something relaxing. Finally I will say that even though it is okay novel I am kinda bothered that our MC is pretty much mary sue character that can eventually succeed in everything he does without much difficulty... <<less

I like this a lot. I love show business novels and the style kind of reminds me of top management? Nah. They have very little a lole but a lot a like. Don't know how to explain it's feeling. The special ability is a nice touch though.

I only wrote this review because I've been waiting weeks for an update and I think it's been left behind like 'chemistry' did.

A little disappointed.

This novel is good. The MC is likeable and has a wit. How the MC interact with people and navigate his life in entertainment industry makes it more enjoyable.

I hope someone pick it up, cause the last arc translated have a good battle if wit and strategy.
