The author needs to be put on a list! No scratch that, every list!

I haven't seen such a willful taste for women's misery since watching that one Ted bundy documentary. It's sick! Like beyond sick. I can't wrap my head around how the author sleeps at night.

Actually its disturbing just to think how they are able to be in public freely.

Don't let the beautiful Greek names or writing fool you, this is the ramblings of a vicous animal excited by women's pain and the happiness men get from it.

Hello! Greek mythology lover here!

I can confidently say I have much deep knowledge about Greek mythology as compared to others, I was rather excited to read this novel when I first saw it.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Spoiler

Gotta be honest, it didn't live upto my marks and expectations

  1. The author seems to have wanted to focus on flashing their Greek mythology knowledge by using hardcore Greek terminology, this would definitely leave a bad taste or give a hard time to newbie readers who don't know much about Greek myth
  2. When I read the part when goddess slept with 2 animals after converting them to humans, I felt so disgusted beyond words, it's outright insult to Greek mythology
  3. Even Zeus the playboy among the gods never did that atrocity, in fact if we remove Zeus, only few gods and goddesses slept with humans, let alone animals, the top gods almost never slept with humans
  4. Reading the fl's "affinity" (?) Towards weapons and her attitude, it seems the goddess in the novel is Athena, the goddess of war, now let me tell u this goddess is quick to anger and doesn't entertain humans, I'll go as far as to say she might as well hate humans
  5. She is the goddess of v*rginity so.... Seeing the FL rolling around with two men, honestly I can imagine Athena cursing the hell out of FL if it were real.
  6. In real greek era if a married woman was found out to have an affair with someone else she was either stoned to death or burnt in stake, haaa.... The world building is in shambles
  7. It just left a bad taste and disgusting feeling when I reached Chp 90 (few chps were so rubbish that I skipped them)
  8. Humble request from me who loves Greek mythology if u are curious about this mythology pls read the English novel <Percy Jackson> by Rick Riordan. The one and only solace for a Greek lover
  9. I can go on and on but it's of no use better to drop

Frankly stating, I have been avoiding reading this novel for a good amount of months. I knew this was going to be hard read because of the Greek mythology & keywords. But, I started this at my own risk. I am clearly stating this, that this review comes from someone who has little to no knowledge about Greek mythology, a novice. All I know is from social media, so I may not be the best judge of this novel. Honestly, I had to shut off my mind to continue to... more>> read this story. For the past few months I have come across many novels that felt different & unique. But, this is a whole new level of unique which even makes you a little bit uncomfortable.

I don't like it but also don't hate it, because I don't know enough about mythology to criticize or debate it. I guess this feels like a guilty pleasure. I don't know what I am even trying to say. Like, even though I am reading this novel, I don't know what I am reading but I still want to read it to know how this ends. The same sentiment stands true for the 3 main characters. They are all so grey just like the story.

👇 A little sneak peek into the story for your caution.. You can ignore if you want as this is a spoiler.

Spoiler

1. FL has relationship with both the men who are btw half brothers. Even after marriage. Even after having a child.

2. None of the ML's are hateful but they are no saints whatsoever. It's FL's selfish actions that get on my nerves. But considering the story it is to be expected.

3. So much has happened in the 90 chapters that I am scared but also curious about what more the novel entails as it progresses, considering it's still on-going.

4. It's a hard read & requires a lot of patience. The translators have done a commendable job.

5. The plot & the story don't make sense. It's mostly the FL getting tossed between the two guys.

[collapse]

The translations are dropped but I sincerely hope this gets picked up again so that I get to know how this ends. Thank you for the translations. <<less

I am writing this review because I demand justice for Pherenike. The new love of my bookworm life. While every reader is entitled to their own opinion of a work of fiction, I personally feel that the other reviews were unilaterally and unfairly slaughtering this masterpiece.

On the Characters:

I will say I am on agreement with the notion that if you are seeking a stereotypically compassionate, morally superior, virtuous FL... there is none to be found here in this work. Pherenike is a cunning, selfish, savage at heart. Author Kim Chacha... more>> said she modeled the FL based on the stereotypes of your typical Korean male lead: cold, arrogant, possessive, obsessive, selfish, manipulative. Our FL embodies all of these traits to various degrees. (Yes. This time the tr*sh gets to be female.) But as the story progresses, she does get humbled by the consequences of her destructive & selfish decisions and thus, gets a reasonable amount of character development. But Pherenike's character never deviates from who she is at the core: a woman who will do whatever it takes to protect what she considers hers.

In contrast to the FL, our male leads are a lot softer and more noble. And I say male leads cause she's gonna end up with both. Just going to lay that out there from the get go. This is a love triangle where our girl gets to have them both at the end. I don't consider this a spoiler because this plan has been laid out by the author herself on her blog so readers don't have a misunderstanding on where the plot is going and think this is your typical one guy wins love triangle.

The Setting:

Pherenike is, as you can probably guess from the cover, set in classical Greek Hellenistic Era. But here, the gods are real and all the myths are canon. This work takes inspiration from Greek tragedies, so do expect some of that. But not to worry, once we get past that phase, there is much comedy and fun to look forward to. Pherenike herself is a riot.

The Plot:

This story is set in the kingdom of Eudokia, founded by the Goddess Kybelar. Pherenike is a high priestess of sort. In fact, she is so powerful that she carries the title of Kybelaunne: Daughter of the Goddess Kybelar. The kingom has two princes, half-brothers. The second prince, Deucalion (silver hair), is the childhood friend/lover of the FL. But he is unfavored and discriminated against by his father, the King. The King instead favors his first-born, Aktor (dark hair) for succession, and hopes one day he will kill Deucalion and succeed him.

The king and his sons are descendants of the goddess and are Pelagons. Their bloodline carries a blessing. Only a Pelagon can kill another Pelagon. Even if a Pelagon is poisoned and/or tortured, unless another Pelagon gives the final blow, he will not die. Eudokia traditionally employs a Ottoman Empire style of succession where the last prince alive gets to be the ruler. Aktor & Deucalion are two half brothers prophesied & destined to kill the other for their own survival.

Because she is considered the daughter of Kybelar, Pherenike is a symbol of power, thus whichever prince she marries will be considered the heir by the kingdom, tipping the scales of succession in his favor. So the king forcibly engages her to the first prince, even though she is in love with and grew up with the second. But Pherenike breaks it off and marries Deucalion anyway, which leads to his death at Aktor's hands. Refusing to accept her husband and soulmate's demise, Pherenike uses her life & goddess given gifts to reverse time. But this time, she barters herself to Aktor to save Deucalion's life. Aktor, in a twist, demands her hand in marriage, not just her body as she expected. Thus the drama starts... and everyone gets twisted.

Pherenike is a extremely dense novel (400+ chapters), spanning multiple timelines & regressions. First of which ends in a tragedy that kicks off the second. There are 3 parts to this novel thus far. Part 1 is merely the introduction and prequel that sets the stage for the true conflict. Part 2 is the body where we truly get to know all the characters, especially the rich & complex side cast (including our delightful beast sidekicks). We even get to really know the previous generation: the parents, the villains, the negligent father. The actual personalities behind the tropes. This the true meat of the novel. Which continues to marinate in part 3, where we will most likely get our conclusion (novel is still updating).

All in all, this is my new favorite series. I relish every update and regret starting it before it completed. <<less
