Ostentatious Zhao Yao

In a hilarious and sweet xianxia romance set in Ancient China, Lu Zhao Yao went through life living ostentatiously in every way possible. She lived her entire demon life in a loud and brazen manner, reigning over legions of demons, and yet——just before she was about to retrieve the sword of the ancient demon king and rightfully claim her spot on the throne——she died.

In the most quiet and unobtrusive manner possible. How? By accident.

Mo Qing, one of her lowest ranking lackeys at that point in time, had killed her after he retrieved the demon sword and unintentionally unleashed the sword’s demonic aura onto the heavily injured Lu Zhao Yao.

Her quiet and untimely death, coupled with her firm belief that Mo Qing had sneakily betrayed her by lying in the shadows and waiting to strike the final blow and reap all the rewards, nurtured a heavy grievance within her. Lu Zhao Yao refused to head to the underworld and reincarnate, hanging around in the human world in her spirit form.

Lady Luck, however, had not completely abandoned her.

One fine day, a female disciple of the Immortal Sect (Zhi Yan) fought with her childhood friend and banged her head onto Lu Zhao Yao’s grave. To Lu Zhao Yao’s utmost delight, she was able to possess Zhi Yan’s body for short periods of time after this.

Thus began her journey to avenge her very own death by destroying Mo Qing——and, in the process, resume her rightful place as the King over all demon sects!

Wow, this is super well done, really likable female main character who is smart, capable, ambitious, a male lead who is very likable, lots of great side characters, very absorbing plot, hilarious (or, occasionally, heartbreaking) worldbuilding. I expected something OK based on the summary but it blew my expectations out of the water...

Jiu Lu Fei Xiang's novel does not disappoint. Like the rest of the author's novels, romance, specifically how it develops between the MCs, is central to the story. This novel is told in first person by Lu Zhao Yao, but in the past tense. The writing mostly focuses on how Lu Zhao Yao experienced and understood each event, while occasionally pointing out things she didn't pay a lot of attention to at the time. This way, the readers are encouraged to make their own judgement on what's the truth while... more>> experiencing the story from Lu Zhao Yao's point of view. The novel is very well told, as expected from the author, filled with dramatic, comedic and some cringe worthy parts. The story is very complete, with no major plot holes. It reads like a short novel but is actually quite lengthy. Overall I feel like this novel has just the right length for the story it tries to tell. Highly recommended. <<less

@sonrisaTNT Thank you so much for picking up this novel. I was really upset that there were no translations past chapter 10 and had been relying on Machine translation of the raw novel. It didn't make sense 95% of the time.

Thank you sooooo much. Hope you would continue translating the rest of the novel. ❤

A complete and utter waste of my time. The MC has Stockholm Syndrome. He killed you, I don't care whether he did it accidentally or deliberately. You must have something really wrong with your head if you fall in love with your murderer. The story is good, though the plot is just not my cup of tea. If this was only a comedy and not a romance about a great demon king who has become a ghost and can't harm or take revenge against her Killer, it would be a... more>> 5 star novel. If he truly asked for forgiveness and apologised to her. And after much hesitation she accepted his apology and then she slowly fell for him as he tried his best to satisfy her through his actions because he thought an apology was still not enough then it would be a 10/5 star story. But while we can see he feels guilt and regret if he doesn't ask for forgiveness, isn't he the same as any one who murders or sins and feels regret but doesn't stop doing such actions and doesn't give a heartfelt apology to the victim's family or the victim herself in this case. Is he truly regretful? <<less

Highly recommended!

I love this novel! There's a good amount of humour (and cringe) and a really touching romance. When the male lead confirms she's back he goes through great lengths for her.

I think Moqing is easily one of, if not my favourite male lead. Zhao yao is also quite smart and straightfoward, a very likable female lead. At first I thought she was dense but actually she was just living in denial.

This is a promising story with a good translation. I only wish there were more chapters! I might recommend that you not start it reading it now and be left on a cliffhanger like me...

Zhao Yao was a powerful and arrogant demoness with an ambition to become the Demon King. However, right before she obtained the Demon King's sword, her low-ranking servant, Mo Qing (whose life she had saved as a child), drew the sword and the shockwave killed her. Feeling utterly betrayed and craving revenge, Zhao Yao waits as... more>> a weak ghost until the day a human girl accidentally hits her head on her grave...

So far, this has been an entertaining story. The main character is arrogant without being s*upid, and it's both comedic and believable to see how everything Mo Qing did after her death infuriates her. You feel some sympathy for Mo Qing with her great misunderstanding, but you also feel righteously frustrated for Zhao Yao's sake. Her interactions with the human girl are also enjoyable, and I like that there are reasonable limitations on how Zhao Yao can possess her body.

I really like this series so far. It looks like it's going to be a loooong wait for new chapters, though. Good luck, translator and readers! <<less

Jiu Lu Fei Xiang is by far one of the greatest writers out there. Like most of Jiu Lu Fei Xiang's other novels, the female lead, Zhao Yao, is a strong woman who does not need a man to help her.

I absolutely love that the male lead, Mo Qing, is so respectful towards Zhao Yao and loves her in every way. All the goods and all the bads. He allows her to be herself and even when jealous, he knows that she is her own person, capable of making her... more>> own decisions.

This is a must read and it is so much better than the drama. Love everything about it. <<less

Mo qing really hits all my moe points!!

The Story is good. I really like how it progresses. Only near the end that it seems a bit forced and our MC is kinda OOC. But all in all it is bearable

I don't know how far it has been translated but I finish it in Thai. (The translation was sh*t though...)

Mo Qing really is

in Buddhism, there's a saying about 'Evil born within mind' which refer to feelings inside the mind of the Buddhist practitioner who doesn't suppose to feel. However there's one cold and aloof Xian who suddenly bore a feeling of love towards Zhao Yao, So He dispelled that feeling outside of himself and bound it for thousands of year.... guess what. IT'S MOQING

However, I don't really trust that Thai publishing to even translate right. So I'm gonna wait here and compare the text. all my support for you translator!!! <<less

This is one of the books you read and actually willing to write a review to recommend to people, it is filled with humor from the confident, level headed MC, unlike those typical capable heroines yet dumb in first loves stereotypes. When she realized what the ML had done for her or the forgotten history, she faced those problems head on and talked about the issues like adults, not leaving anything for misunderstandings. Of course, there’s some things she chose not to reveal to him but that will end up... more>> as part of the ending humor to end the story, what she didn’t want to tell the ML, is out of consideration not to hurt the other party. She saved and took care a lot of the characters when they were little like a mother hen and big sister, and it made both MC and readers alike to ask if the ML liked her out of gratitude and loneliness. It will later reveal in the epilogues from ML viewpoint, how he developed strong feelings from a child to adulthood and how those short meetings yet big impacts to his life, really molded him into a great ML.

Another fun thing that I liked about th MC is that she noticed ML’s petty jealousies and good-naturedly mentioning them while cajoling him, understanding fully how he will react and not wanting to upset him in anyway. Both MC and ML are selfless although we know from beginning that ML weighed in more into giving (more like pouring) his adoration on MC, MC will not lose out to expressing her love for him, whether they are obvious PDA to innate thoughts that only the ML hear. <<less

Really quite good, the plot is fairly refreshing in this genre. It's very very similar to The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, although it's BG and not as good as it, but it's still a decent read. The MC is logical, smart, assertive, and extravagant but it's not on annoying like those overly aggressive female MCs in the "assassin reincarnated" troupes. The ML is pretty great as well, not pushy and possessive but treasures and spoils her. The side characters are all quite nice as well, like the Western Lord.

I also... more>> really appreciate the translator's efforts, as they post pictures from the drama every couple paragraphs. It helps the story come to life. <<less

——"That he could give up everything, wasn't it just because he had nothing to begin with?"

Our MC's disdain was probably the catalyst for this story.

An unusual romance between what would normally be your pitiful "second male lead, " the devoted childhood friend/wallflower doorman who, by sheer accident, ends up stumbling into the limelight.

All the 2nd-ML-syndromers out there, this is for you!

YBB as an author, creates very likeable, pro-active, (shameless) female protagonists; LZY is one of the best.

LZY is a shounen hero (in female form), but this story isn't about how the typical naive, blindly trusting heroic lead turns into a cynical and carelessly proud sect leader.

Although I would have loved to read about that, rather what I appreciate is that LZY maintains her straightforward confidence and pride throughout the novel.

A lot of authors are unable to create consistently powerful female protagonists. All too frequently, the pro-active or shameless female MC will quickly turn into a "shy virginal shirking violet" relying exclusively on the ML in the second half of the novel.

Thankfully, this is NOT one of them.

Our fantastic MC, who has built up her own reputation, power base, and demonic sect with her own two hands, keeps her self-confidence and firm decision-making from beginning to end.

She also doesn't rely on the ML to solve her problems. Moreover, her pride (the kind that writers typically only attribute to "male" heroes) means that she wants to achieve her goals and defeat her enemies, with her own abilities.

YBB is skilled at spinning dramatic (and frequently tragic) storylines amidst hilarious moments of comedy and clueless awkwardness. The side characters are pretty well-fleshed out with their own unspeakable sacrifices and wants and needs.

Come embark on a (mostly) humorous journey filled with misunderstandings (and denial), the mysterious (and illogical) workings of the netherworld, and the mysterious (and illogical) workings of the human heart.

Prepare your tissues, I say. But the ending is HEA.

Great translators for the later chapters (first chp had some issues). I read the raws starting chp 40. <<less

Pretty good.

One of the very rare chinese romance novels I actually like. Perhaps because most of the novel isn't a romance as such, but instead a series of attempts by the MC (who is quite likable and amusing, by the way) to kill her love interest.

Well made novel! It was no wonder that it was adapted into a drama. I felt bad for the two side couples in the story but I guess that made it more realistic. I loveeee all the characters and how they were all very humane. And that plot twist at the eeeend was wow, just mindblowing <3

P.S. The male lead shouldn't be blamed for her death at all, since it was an accident and he didn't know the sword would release such force that could kill everyone around him :< I actually felt bad for him huhu he didn't want her to die at alllllll

Tho anyway she was never dead because Zhiyan's uncle saved her

Enjoyed this a lot! Zhaoyao is a great protagonist, very funny, confident and strong. I love her straightforward nature. Mo Qing as a love interest is so patient and devoted even while she's in disguise and trying to kill him. Zhiyan as the woman whose body Zhaoyao borrows also shows great growth and and I love her and Zhaoyao's growing friendship in the end.
