In an academy for summoners, students combine impressive stores of magical energy with artful incantations to usher legends, great and small, onto the battlefield. Feil Fonaf, an eighteen-year-old son to a poor farmer, may have had a rougher upbringing than his more affluent peers, but he’s here to prove he deserves his spot at the academy! As luck would have it, his counterpart summon winds up being the legendary god-slaying beast, Pandora! There’s just one problem…

First of all I'll say this: Good Characters. They're interesting and feel like real people (or at least better than most WNs). This is always the first thing I look for in reviews so I'll put it at the top. Also, no spoilers outside of references to the power system explained very early on, so no need to worry about that.

I'll start with the Cons since it's pretty quick:

The translation isn't bad, but it is odd. It chooses a very proper, high-born dialect for dialogue. This is appropriate given they're... more>> in a high class school, but it also uses it for every character, regardless of their origin. While minor, it also has the common issue of mixing up pronouns (I, we, he, them) which means you have to figure out who is talking each time, but this is made worse by every character talking so similar.

The translation is probably hard to read for those not familiar with English or who aren't confident with their English vocabulary. (Though I won't blame anyone for having to look up "Extempore", we'll get to that.) The unnecessary Old-English peaks around chapter 22 but apparently someone pointed it out because it gets much better after that.

A completely bearable translation for those comfortable with English after chapter 23 but some noticeable hiccups before then.

As for the Pros:

First is the amazing world building. I cannot get over how interesting the world is, especially the ancient lore. I would genuinely read an ancient history book from this story that's how interesting it is.

The magic system is also awesome. I won't go to deep into the summon system but it's really cool. I'm a fan of power systems and this one is a good one, refreshing after the "SYSTEM MESSAGE: psst you can skip this explanation, you know how it works" glowing window only you can see thing in the last 100 web novels I've read.

There are also illustrations throughout that help bring the characters to life. The designs and art are really good but I wish there were fewer character portraits and more action shots that include the character designs in them. Still positive in the end though.

And now for the big one, the reason this went from 4/5 to 5/5.

It treats its readers like they have a brain.

The story doesn't start with a "the beginning of MC's journey", no "abridged history of the world" prologue, not even a "here are the world rules that the events after this fall into". Chapter 1 starts half-way through a fight scene with ZERO exposition on what's going on. It's chaotic and awesome.

The exposition is carefully sprinkled through natural dialogue BETWEEN characters and brief explanations when something natural to the laws or history of this world appears that wouldn't need explanation to characters that live in the world with them. It's left to you to puzzle out and guess exactly how the system works and then be excited when the next events fall into your presumed world-view.

I LOVE this. It is a breath of fresh air to read a story that doesn't let me skip from dialogue to dialogue without missing anything. Every chapter leaves you waiting for the next to learn more, sometimes even cutting off just before a conclusion of something and using context clues in the next chapter to figure out the in between.

There is one problem with this though, and that's when a translation obscures clues. The only time I was left clueless was when suddenly characters started talking about extempores. These are temporary summons that you can learn outside of each character's unique summon (extempore means 'without preparation'), basically quick and dirty summons that don't require much effort. This system was described but not named anything special and then several chapters later referred to as extempores without any direct explanation.

Conclusion:

This story isn't for everyone though. I'm sure many people would just get annoyed at the unnecessarily complex method of story telling. But for someone looking for something more than a cheap and dirty power fantasy, something that actually makes them think, this is definitely near the top of my list. <<less

Honestly the archaic language being used is a bit irritating sometimes, but the story itself is good. I'm impressed by the translator's ability to write it so eloquently, even if it honestly gets in the way of enjoying it sometimes. Still looking forward to see how it goes from here though!
