Death Flag is by far one of my favourite series here on NU. The protagonist's character is unique and well thought out. He is a dark protagonist born for tragedy, but the author writes it in a way for us as readers to sympathise with him instead of over dramatising tragedy like many other authors do, which turns the series edgy and awkward.

One of the main features in Death Flag is the author's use of monologues, to which he express's the character's inner thoughts beautifully, to further express the biggest... more>> feature of the protagonist on how 'not everything is what it seems'.

When I started reading this, I honestly thought this was the best written isekai story I have read in recent memory. Then the third arc started, and I had to re-evaluate that. But I am getting ahead of myself.

First, here's the premise in a nutshell: The protagonist is an average university student who is a huge fan of a certain video game. The nature of the game is never really described, but it is likely some kind of single player, Tales-type JRPG with active combat. Anyways, one day he wakes... more>> up in the body of one of the characters from the game, except it's not the protagonist but the ten year old version one of those easily hateable returning midboss villains. Not only that, but while he is in full control of his actions, he cannot properly control what he says, meaning even the most amicable words turn into vicious insults and haughty scoffs by the time they leave his mouth. He figures that if he wants to save his skin, along with everyone else's in the worlds, he has to try and preserve as much of the original story of the game as possible so that the protagonist and his party could defeat the big bad as they should. Naturally, things don't go as planned...

The first two arcs of the story were great. The first one mostly focused on the protagonist finding his place in the world and using his knowledge of the future of the setting to maneuver into an advantageous position. The second arc, in turn, focused more on personal combat and warfare. While that wasn't as engaging as the first arc, it wasn't bad; far from it.

Then the third arc began, and oh boy...

First let's look into the good parts of the story and ease into the problems of the third part. First off, the premise was interesting, and the way the other characters started to change their attitude towards the protagonist was fun to read. The comedy was also mostly good. It had shades of some classic misunderstanding-comedy tropes (for example, the main love interest walks up to the protagonist just as he cries because of a bout of homesickness, and she conveniently interprets it in a way that makes her fall for him even harder), but the misunderstandings are never outrageous enough to make one cringe, so it's all good. The romance is slow, but it works really well, thought the way the female lead falls for him and then immediately gets 200% devoted to him was a little contrived. There were also some very basic economic and political maneuverings in there, which weren't particularly deep, but still entertaining.

However, there are problems with this story, and serious ones at that, that were only minor annoyances until they exploded into the forefront in the 3rd arc. For reference, the 2nd arc ends on a literal life-or-death cliffhanger, and then the first chapter of the next arc not only skips five years, it also ditches all the side-cast it built up in the 2nd arc, puts the protagonist into a contrived situation where he has to work for the big bad of the series and then it tries to simultaneously explain what happened during the time-skip, introduce a bunch of new characters and concepts and then also advance the plot at the same time. In short, it doesn't work and it's downright abysmal compared to the promise the first arc held.

Still, it's not bad, and maybe with time the author can salvage the series, but the horrible transition between the 2nd and 3rd arcs really dented my opinion on this otherwise really promising work. Sad. <<less

Coming from someone who has read all the translated chapters up to date. This novel has caused me sleepless nights and withdrawal symptoms; Refreshing the page all day, trying to read MTLed raws, rereading twice a week, sacrificing virg*ns for updates, and etc...

TL;DR: Avoid this novel like you avoid drugs. It's addicting, and you would regret reading it NOW because there are only 12 chapters translated so far) ; <<less

One of the most Japanese novel, recommended! He is reincarnated in a villain who have a speech problem everything he says will turn to an arrogant speech. The MC is hardworking and is training to evade all the death flag that comes up.

One word, bullshit. Have you ever wondered what a movie with an interesting premise of hard-core fantasy only to become a cringy romance? This is it. This is basically Gamers! without the comedy. To make matters worst instead of 'death flag' it is becoming 'harem flag', that I do wonder that why authors think that this is always good for novels, aside from fanservice that will become frequent. /sigh

A lot of plot is being left behind the scenes... Like really a lot. Introducing... more>> an important character only for them to be washed away when the plot demands it, awful writing there... And things that are already said is always being retold that the Author thinks the readers are bollocks that can't comprehend the novel. Redundancy at it's finest... :U

So here's the thing. This novel is a miss or hit. Either you'll thoroughly enjoy it or suffer the same pain as I did.... And also the MC is here is quite dense, and is on his way reaching the League of Dense MCs.

In Harold's mind, Erika hates him. Because she thought that he killed Carla and Collette (the servant and her daughter), when infact he saved them from execution. Although this was kept in secret, Erika one-sidedly investigated and found the truth, but she did not revealed it to keep Harold's effort and pride. After a long-long chapters, Collette and Co. are in the Sumeragi Household for a particular matter. There, Harold, Erika, and Collette are present BUT IN WHATSH!T BULLSH!T, , , Harold didn't even mind Erika and Collette seeing each other..... LIKE WTF,.... and afterwards he still thinks Erika hates him due to that event (rumored killing)... yeah the hell, Erika saw Collette alive infront of Harold, but like nothing happened..... /sigh Cr4p

This novel just runs up the bad end of my alley. As seen by the many other reviews, the MC deviates from many of the cliches. The MC hosts the body of the most hated character in a popular game, but instead of breaking his death flag he tries to stay on the original story's route, while avoiding his bad end. The main irk I have is the use of misunderstandings. The plot relies on the fact that the MC and the other game characters will never see eye to... more>> eye because of a trait the MC's body has so that he will always say something rude. This isekai novel stands far above most other isekai novels simply by being a worthwhile story:

1) There is a very clear goal that the plot faithfully structures itself on;

2) The author maintains a sense of risk throughout the story by having every major action of the main character result in appropriate consequences;

I can't get past the first major plot hole of this work: our protagonist immediately accepts his new situation as a game character and acts as that character would, rather than he would otherwise. If such an event were to occur normally, it would mean the protagonist has no personality of his own. No sense of morals to guide his own decisions.

The author claims that someone who could adapt to and deal with such a situation would be a freak (per the translator's choice of words). Yet that's exactly what... more>> the protagonist does; rather than react as he normally would, voicing his dissatisfaction with the situation he finds himself in, he chooses to continue as the character would. He feels resistance when he thinks about acting for himself, but rather than fight to express his thoughts he immediately concedes to whatever is constraining his actions. And then he decides to maintain the flow of events, when they clearly end to a bad end for himself and others, simply to maintain a supposed advantage that is illogical at best?

The plot is ill-conceived and the characters unbelievable. This work's foundation is faulty, at best, and one cannot create a good story with such disregard to the initial concepts. I respect an author attempting something new with what has become a fairly common premise, but such variation is no excuse for disregarding common sense. <<less

The main character is a generic emo misunderstood protag with a heart of gold, your basic mary sue character. He is perfect in every way yet hated for inexplicable reasons. Except every character in the story loves him unconditionally and hes just being "oppressed" by unnamed background characters. Basically just means everything in this story is written to worship our self insert edge MC, events exist to be solved perfectly by our MC, and the characters exist only to speak about how great our MC is for doing it. There... more>> is no story to this novel besides repetitive m*sturbation to self inserting yourself as the MC.

I have no idea how so many people think so highly of themselves, this is a Kirito level MC, and actually a worse story than sword art online. <<less

I really want to like this story. The protagonist is genuinely interesting, and many of the supporting characters (and villains) are even more so. The world and the premise of the story are actually really well put together. The writing is extremely strong (for a web novel) and the author is clearly intelligent enough to put together a riveting, compelling story.

All that potential just makes what actually happens even more disappointing. By the time v4 rolls around, the story has devolved into what I can only call a generic wish fulfillment harem novel. Every arc for the past 40 chapters has been exactly the same, and riddled with all the things that I detest about generic wish fulfillment isekais, except with a lot more self-destructiveness from the protagonist. Here, I'll give you the run down:

  1. The main villain instigates problem X. Meanwhile, the protagonist, in spite of supposedly having foreknowledge of everything that happens in the game, will have done absolutely nothing to prepare for this. In fact, he won't have done anything proactive at all since the last arc.
  2. The protagonist encounters guest character Y. Over the course of the arc, a frustratingly contrived sequence of misunderstandings will convince them that the protagonist is the most kind and "intelligent" person that they have ever met in spite of his constant blunders and insulting speech. If the guest character is female, she will fall in love with him, and then another member of the cast will deliver a blatantly out of character speech that ensures that she spend the rest of the story never acting on these feelings except to talk about how great the protagonist is.
  3. The protagonist chooses a needlessly overcomplicated and self-destructive way to resolve problem X that usually ends in him just beating it down with his overpowered physical specs anyways. All the easier, glaringly obvious solutions to the problem are cursorily ignored.
  4. All regular citizens hear about the protagonist's exploits and resolve to hate him even more than they already did. Meanwhile, all the primary characters stroke their beards and read way more into his actions than he intended to convince themselves that he really is as "clever" as they think he is. The protagonist, having supposedly learned from his mistakes and grown as a person, proceeds to go back to doing absolutely nothing so that exactly the same thing can happen next arc.
Don't get me wrong, the way that this happens in each arc is varied, interesting, and (comparatively) well written. But honestly, that just makes it even more frustrating when you think about what actually happened.

It’s one of the unique novel which was able to combine unusual elements which is Foul Mouthed Protagonist which leads to misunderstanding but the most exceptional factor here is the Usage of Economics, Schemes, Psychological Thinking, which is about the Intellectual Part, also there’s Battles, but they are still typical if it was to be compared to its intellectual counterpart. The Story is progressing in a fast but decent pace, frame-up story, considering that it has only 50 chapters in total which is not questionable. Complex story which is about... more>> the intellectual schemes of the protagonist with the combination of simple battle premise makes this story very different to other novels. The First Half is about the execution of the domestic affairs of the noble household, also about the character depth, thought provoking and logical reasonings about the game play, the only problem is the ‘foul mouthed trope’ of the protagonist and his denial to his existence due to the game mechanics. The individual elements are really good, so far most of these elements are consistent and was able to elaborate what it’s trying to do, though it’s quite slow even though the whole story is in decent pace. The protagonist Kazuki, who became Harold, which is the antagonist of the who’s fate will lead to death, basically the title is all about Harold (not gonna use Kazuki) who’s trying to evade his death by doing redeeming deeds and training. Harold’s identity was his cruelty towards common people, and that identity was still maintained because of his automatic foul mouth which only changes with his parents, also his character is very complex, he’s to focus on evading ‘flags’ even romantic flags in order for the ‘True Protagonist’ to shine in the world he lives, so he’s basically the version of batman the dark knight. Most of the Supporting characters are well rounded and complex, they are also flawed but with redeemable strengths, though they have to tolerate themselves towards the Harold’s harsh treatment. So far there’s no Antagonist, if there is, then it’s the Parents of Harold who became his pawns, but so far only the Last Boss is the predetermined Antagonist of the Story.

Despite of having Exceptional Plot and Characters, my enjoyment is not that much if it’s to be compared to Genjitsushugisha no Oukokukaizouki, since the mood of the whole series is in the middle of Light and Heavy, to make it simple, if there’s color Black and White, then this series is Gray. It’s not Boring but also not interesting as it seems, it became repetitive for Harold to become harsh to any people, which makes the series quite unbearable and dreadful, also he only helps people not because of kindness, it’s because of the story of the game which he’s trying to change while not destroying the original plot, and because of that Harold have become unconsciously concern to other people while trying to become the person which is supposed to be hated. In short he’s doing what’s the best for the people and for himself while trying to stick to his identity as an antagonist, in short he's still facing the biggest crisis of letting people die or being saved. Which is the reason why it’s hard to enjoy because of complex issues written by the author. Overall the series is very intelligent and unique, and Harold is an Overpowered Cheat MC who excels in Mind and Body. It’s not perfect but it’s not common either, it’s interesting but also dreadful. So far it’s good, though it’s one of those series which is Hard to Judge, to read, and to recommend, therefore it depends on you who’s reading this review whether to read it or not. <<less

I've been reading since the story was only translated to three chapters, now it's at twenty-two.

I'm about to cry. It 100% deserves its high rating, and I shiver for an update. It's well paced and the MC has a calculative personality.

It's not bad. I'm enjoying it for the most part and I'd recommend people to read this as well.

The premise is that the MC's soul is spirited away to another world and he revives in the body of a 10 year old boy. Coincidentally, the world in which he's transported to greatly resembles the setting and timeline of a famous RPG classic from his home world - which the MC just so happens to be well versed in, having played/beaten it over 10 times. What's interesting is that he takes... more>> the place of one of the stories' core villains. Countless hijinks ensue as our protagonist tries to maintain the chronological history that is supposed to occur in this world, things such as the hero meeting his companions and fighting the final boss, etc. Etc. At the same time though, he alters history in a way that allows his character - one of the core antagonists of the RPG story - to continue living, as he is essentially meant to die in the original game. As he manipulates events behind the scene he starts to slowly alter the course of history in interesting and humorous ways. In fact, it almost seems as if this time around, the 'villain' is the one who will be the 'hero' in this world.

However I do have complaints.

There is one thing about this novel that particularly irks me; the MC is forced to speak like his alter villain self constantly. Phrases such as 'it's nice to meet you' turn into 'you bastards should grovel at the pleasure of being in my presence' and essentially he comes off sounding incredibly obnoxious and grating to the ears. Ever encounter a villain in a story that really gets on your nerves because of how haughty and annoying their speech is? Well this basically creates the same effect. It makes no sense why the MC is being FORCED to speak in this manner, and it gets stale and annoying really fast when you have to hear him speak this way all the time. To make things worse his improper speech tick leads to all sorts of unnecessary misunderstandings and annoyances that don't add much to the story other than irritating the reader. MC comes off sounding like a bratty prick with a foul potty-mouth when his own personality is anything but that. I wouldn't have minded this 'tick' so much if it gradually faded away the longer the MC inhabited the villain's body, however after a time skip three years to the future, his speech habits have not changed. This creates a disharmonious dichotomy between his true personality and the role that was forced unto him, that of the villain.

Another complaint I have is that the protagonist seems awfully, almost robotically attached to the events of the original chronology of the game. Oftentimes, his motivations seem almost programmed the way he religiously tries everything in his power to adhere to the chronology. It makes sense that he's doing it so that his character doesn't die at the end of the story and that the hero can save the world, etc etc., but this doesn't mean that he has no time to relax or to indulge himself in anything else. He spends 24/7 of his time making preparations for maintaining the chronology or training and he does nothing else. He doesn't seem to particularly enjoy the world in which he's been placed - which is funny since this is supposed to be his favorite game that he's replayed over 10 times; you'd imagine a fanboy of this level would stop once in a while to admire the scenery around him, but nope. To top it all off sometimes the character feels inconsistent. For instance, despite having the mind of a 20+ year old university student, he feels genuine anger/rage towards nice, little girls for being 'naive'. Excuse me? Since when are 9 year old girls supposed to carry themselves like adults? In what world is this true? When you combine this with his terrible forced speech tick then it gets really grating on the nerves and it's a shame that it does since overall this is a enjoyable read, despite all the awful things I've said about it already. <<less

I caught up to the latest update in 3 days (I don't really have that much free time lately), and I have to say, this is one of the best novel I have ever read.

The protagonist isn't some "justice" character, as seen in the tags. Even though he tries to look evil, people still ended up gathering around him, he is more protagonist than the game protagonist lol.

All in all, I love it and gonna wait for the author to continue this novel.

I hate how interesting this. After reading so many novels, I’m seriously so tired of reading dragged out battles, this story doesn’t have that, it is more focused on character interactions and the MC using his knowledge to save his life.

Definitely recommend this novel

Author has exceptional writing skill, the setting of this novel is really interesting, the plot is clear (unlike other isekai novels)

MC is not naive or s*upid like the majority of MCs in many jap novels, although he was just an average university student (like many isekai novels) before being transported into the game, he never says pu*sy things like "I cant kill", (also MC knows how to optimize his brain)

The author is in love with the idea of a tragic hero and forces it even when it makes absolutely no sense. At the start the main character makes some self sacrificial yet potentially smart decisions. The author can't think of any more, so the MC makes idiotic self sacrificial decisions that have no benefit, then informs the reader they are smart because I said so.

The main character is absolutely determined to ruin himself as his top priority even higher than producing a good outcome. This one has a good plot.

But also has a cruel methods of torturing the protagonist.

Kazuki transmigrated into the world of 'brave hearts' which he loves to play. Unfortunately in the body of one of the villains, Harold. Not just that, he was completely integrated in the body of Harold. Although he did not inherited the host memory; he is completely one with the body.

Dunno but Kazuki is both intelligent and smart. But lack EQ. Well, I kinda understand. He lack sense of belonging in the world since he is an outsider. Knowing about the future events and thinking about how to escape his death in the end or to go home. He created a one-sided path, not thinking about others at all and ended up creating misunderstandings.

Thinking about how far this novel has reached now. I can't wait for the chapter of revelation.

Now that everyone misunderstood Kazuki again. I wonder if Lifa will tell them about Harold sacrifices in this arc inorder to clean his name. (even though she promised not to tell...)

I've only finished the 1st chapter but can't bring myself to continue, so I'm going to review this novel to inform other potential readers, but I don't think it'd be fair of me to rate it.

You know how some characters sometimes do insane, out of character, self destructive things for the purpose of plot convenience or contrived tension instead of any reasonable or rational exercise of thought? The MC is reincarnated as the main villain of a visual novel and every time he enters a "scene" from the game, he... more>> loses free will and is forced to act out the scene of a villain who does pointlessly evil things because he's evil.

Honestly, characters doing insane things for plot convenience or contrived tension is one of the easiest ways to ruin a novel for me, and that's apparently one of the major sources of tension in this novel. As such, I just can't bring myself to keep reading. <<less

This is one of the greatest book in NU in my opinion. The person here is Herold Stokes, who is a person from the other world. You know, the body possessing stuff and going into games. The person himself has to talk like a tsundere which makes the story form the 3d point of view, which it is written in, more tear-jerking. Basically, this is great and you should read it.
