My Core is the Boss

While everyone else in his sect obsesses over cultivation realms and breakthroughs, Qi Yuan’s busy obsessing over his game, dropping Gen Z slang no one understands, and boss fights. His peers meditate in silence while he grinds monsters.

But the game he keeps trying to log into isn’t a game at all. On the other side lies a real cultivation world, a brutal realm of thrones, secret realms, and deadly sect rivalries. For those here, Qi Yuan is no slacker but an unfathomable powerhouse whose casual jokes carry the weight of destiny.

In his own world, Qi Yuan is a laid-back senior brother who treats cultivation like optional homework and makes his junior sister facepalm daily. In the other, every offhand remark, every sarcastic meme-like joke, is taken as prophecy. To him, it’s all just fun and games. To them, it’s fate.

This novel is boring. While I did laugh a couple of times, and the time-manipulation aspect initially seemed interesting, in the end it wasn’t enough to make up for all the other flaws. Even the few good parts had completely disappeared by chapter 200. Let’s go through everything in order:

Plot: It’s unclear what the author is even trying to turn this story into. The narrative constantly jumps back and forth between comedy and drama, serious storytelling and lighthearted nonsense, shallow attempts at philosophy and cheap fanservice. As a reader, this... more>> left me completely confused. Maybe the author doesn’t know what they want either...

Cultivation system: Very poorly developed and seemingly exists only so the protagonist can defeat elite opponents several realms above him.

Worldbuilding: Barely described at all. If you haven’t read other xianxia novels before, the world will feel more like a rough sketch than a complete setting, and you’ll probably spend most of the time wondering what’s going on.

Characters: Shallow caricatures that exist solely as background props or convenient tools for the protagonist.

A rich junior sister who casually gives you valuable treasures? ✓

A master who conveniently saves you at the right moment? ✓

Powerful experts who appear out of nowhere just to hand their wealth to the protagonist? ✓

Random bystanders who either slander or worship the protagonist? ✓

(The author even added a cultivator version of an internet forum just for this.)

Writing: The same things get repeated multiple times for no reason, and the protagonist occasionally spouts some pseudo-philosophical nonsense in the form of poems that are either difficult or outright impossible to understand.

And finally, the protagonist himself: At first, the reader is supposed to see him as an eccentric, half-crazy individual, but instead he comes across more like a clown rambling incoherently. Not very convincing. Then, after entering his game, he turns into the typical bloodthirsty and arrogant young master archetype. Everything the protagonist does only works because he’s strong enough to force it to work, protected by massive plot armor. And even when the villains manage to use their single brain cell to trick him, it always ends with the usual “I outsmarted your outsmarting.”

This novel was a huge disappointment for me. I expected a comedy, but instead I got a complete mess. <<less

It's not for everyone but to me this novel is absolutely hilarious. The MC is incredibly unhinged, basically being autistic. He goes through worlds he gaslights himself into believing are just games and gets s*upidly overpowered through the opportunities he gets. As of now, it's translated into the 100's on scribblehub though that's probably edited mtl and I've read up to around c350 on an mtl site.

Edit: Finished on Scribblehub. Overall thought it was great, though the tone does shift with a lot more worldbuilding and a bit less of... more>> a focus on the unhinged comedy. Definitely still recommend! <<less

I like the beginning a lot. Qi Yuan has the ability to inspect the world around him and see hidden details with inspections once per day. That combined with the world being "twisted" with spies everywhere, techniques all have hidden traps in them, and sect politics sets his power up to be incredibly strong. He is seen as somewhat crazy due to not going along with the current system, and his personality / autism. This is a strong setup for a story.

The problem is that there is also a separate... more>> system in the story: the recently popular system type where the MC has a dream / VR game they can enter where he gains power for clearing levels (that unknown to him is actually a real place with real people). The interesting setup from earlier isn't focused on after the initial chapters and this was focused on instead, which isn't as good of a setting for the story.

That shift in focus along with the MC's personality leads to this story being only ok.

Spoiler

The MC's personality feels like someone wanted to write a "cool" laidback character but wrote what a middle schooler would think as cool, which ends up being just autism. The MC, as a low level disciple people think is kind of crazy, reports that the respected sect master is a spy for a demon sect without evidence and is surprised he's punished / dismissed. He talks about his hidden powerhouse master about how attractive her body is to her face and ends up avoided. It's presented as he's "just telling the truth" but shows a complete lack of social understanding at all, pretty severe autism. His personality is one of the weakest parts of the story so far.

So far this is just a comedy that you read with your brain turned off. I'm having fun, but I really wish the translation gets better.

It could just be something wrong with the version I'm reading, but every chapter completely renames everything.

If I do drop this, it is because of the horrible translation quality than it is the s*upid over the top (in a good way) story.

This is a comedy so don't read this taking it seriously.

You know how in most novels the MC has 80 iq but the author tries to make them seem smart and they get through everything purely through luck?

Well, this MC has 80 iq and the author also makes them completely insane. The premise works for an entertaining and funny story.

... more>> LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD:

The premise is that the MC transmigrates to a cultivation world. He has one main world but goes to different cultivation worlds with a game system. He thinks of each of these different worlds as "games" but they are very real and his goal in the "game" is to save the world. Clearing the different games boosts his cultivation in the main world. The people he is saving are always incredulous because he is a clearly insane person that is saving them but they eventually (and hilariously) fall in line. When they fall in line he is so OP that they don't even help him battle, they just become part of the band and play music for him while he fights. Honestly, a lot of the conflict in the novel is trying to convince the powerful people he is saving to join his band. <<less

Other reviews have already covered most of the plot, so I’ll share my perspective on aspects of the novel that might interest you the most:

1. MC (Main Character)

The MC’s appearance is as handsome as in many other novels. However, his character feels robotic; he often doesn’t come across as human, and sometimes even seems a bit dense, which might explain the "autism" tag. He’s a relentless killer, a "killing machine" in both the "Realm of Jade Slip" (another realm he considers a game) and the real world. If you... more>> enjoy an MC who wields a sword and slays hundreds of humans or demons, he’s your guy.

2. Harem

Within the first 120 chapters, about 6-7 female characters are introduced as potential harem candidates. But is it a good harem? No, not really. Don’t read this novel solely for the harem aspect. The MC is a leveling-focused player who only pursues cultivation. Women must wait an eternity for him—he literally tells one heroine she’ll have to wait until the end of time for him to find her.

3. Timeskips and Realms

The timeskips are extreme, as are the "realms within realms." Three years pass, then ten years, then hundreds of years... The author barely cares about other characters; it’s only about the MC. Characters wait thousands of years, yet the focus remains solely on the MC’s progress. If you enjoy novels centered around leveling, powering up, and grinding, you’ll likely enjoy this one.

4. Character Interaction

The MC’s interactions with other characters feel empty—mostly transactional. If there’s no "business" to be done, then there’s no scene or interaction. <<less

So I can't rate this. At all. Because, you see, your enjoyment will ENTIRELY depend on whether you like (/can stand) the MC. Because he is utterly and completely batsh*t insane. At first, I thought it was the author trying to actually display someone who's like autistic or neurodivergent or something... but nope, he's literally insane. And it's a disgrace to compare people who actually are autistic/etc to him. Like really, don't do that. He's nuts. Completely nuts.

And that's BEFORE he starts cultivating two completely mind-altering Cultivation Abilities. One literally... more>> gives him dementia and selective memory (as well as actual memory problems that are 'hidden' for when the author wants to divulge them for plot hole reasons), but the second is a literal berserker ability that f***s with his mind and emotions. Except where berserker states are mostly wrath-based, this is ALL the sins (the TL seems to go along the '7 deadly sins', but I'm not sure if that's the case, or it was more religion-neutral). So you might get overbearing lust or greed or pride or whatever.

Anyway, this is very much a parody/comedy, except it's played straight. The MC is insane and OP (and cowardly and pessimistic about it, as well as having no grasp of powerlevels lol). So this MC is dropped into a totally normal cultivation world and it's played straight.

100% of your enjoyment is predicated on your ability to appreciate the MC being insane. If you can't stand it, don't even bother. The story literally has nothing else going for it, and the author is a mess when it comes to other characters or reasonable plots or worldbuilding. Expect 'Chinese Keyboard Warrior' jokes on a BBS-forum type thing matched with completely straight archaic ancient-China-style xianxia story. Time is messed with however the author desires, from extreme-dilation to the exact opposite, and it's not consistent. Time travel happens, and again, it's inconsistent and however the author demands of it for the plot. Characters gain and lose memories, are reincarnated multiple times, etc. It's all a mess.

Seriously, as I said, the rest of the story is a mess. You will either enjoy the MC interacting with this world, or you won't, and it's the only thing that matters. The thing is, if you like it, it's ACTUALLY funny. While I wouldn't necessarily say that this deserves a 5-star rating (as mentioned, there are literally tons of things wrong with it, even if you enjoy the MC), I do understand why the ratings are either 1-star or 5-star.

(Presumably the 5-star is for the absurdity factor and the MC, but lets be real, it doesn't deserve a 5-star). The 1-star ratings are also understandable, because if you can't stand the MC, then there's LITERALLY nothing else that's redeeming either. <<less

Honestly, the premise was kind of interesting.

Unfortunately, the protagonist just wasn't for me. I'm typically used to Chinese protagonists being unintentionally ret*rded, but when it's intentional, it's even worse.

The main reason I decided to drop the novel, though, is because I don't like cowardly protagonists. This guy is the cliche coward that doesn't dare to do anything without hiding his face and making sure absolutely no one will find out that he did good deeds.

Even to the point that he even wanted to wear women's clothes in order to make... more>> absolutely sure people couldn't even identify him based on gender...

Even in the world he considers a game, he doesn't even dare to fight like a man. He'll constantly run away from much weaker opponents and dig a hole to hide in until he feels it's a bit safer to make a move.

If you're like me and can't stand cowardice and excessive levels of paranoia, just stay away from this one. You'll be annoyed to hell. <<less

The book itself for the most part seems pretty good to me. There are aspects that I like about it and the mc's personality at first feels somewhat fresh and interesting for a cultivation novel. There were also some jokes I found funny like him walking his kitchen knife.

With all that being said, I'm not sure if it was due to the translation or just how the author writes but the pacing just felt horrible to me.

Spoiler

At first the story seems to be a comedy slice of life cultivation type hybrid, with it being a eccentric MC essentially grinding in games and becoming stronger with some cheat skills. Then during the first game arc the book just felt super chaotic and unorganized to me. It honestly felt like the book changed genres for a bit, where the mc's personality suddenly swapped and it was jumping around with time POV shenanigans where he is in the past of the world his friend was in mixed with the random powerspikes. I can understand the overall plot but it just felt really badly executed to me, where just the overall flow didn't feel right. Then it suddenly all resets back to the MC being in his normal world with his new cheat. Idk, I'm really struggling to simply write how this arc felt to read, but it just felt really bad to read to me. It's not that the plot points themselves feel bad but just how they are connected don't feel great to me, its so chaotic with what feels like little set-up and just a lot of weird moves like him deciding not to level up and its never really explained why that mattered at the time. Just overall it felt so jarring having the tones change and time changing, going from MC looking for his friend to slaughtering thousands to fighting old men to the death.

[collapse]

The book isn't bad I would say, but at the very least I don't think this book is for me. I do like the concept, but something about the execution is preventing me from enjoying the book. <<less

The story has some elements of comedy which some might like while some might not.

Going into this story, you'll find that all characters including the MC has below average IQ and is crazy (esp MC as the story progresses).

The power scaling of the story is broken and makes almost 0 sense so don't expect too much of it.

The MC is unhinge

The MC personality got me tumor in my brain. I got it, you're "autism" so to speak. But that doesn't make me like you, but make me drop it.

At first I tolerate your personality as I want to know how you gonna make a planet your golden core but even the anticipation waned after I read nearly 100 chapters in.

Right up my alley. Surprisely enough, its hard finding a cultivation novel where the main character is ruthless and autistic. Like, you got a lot of brain-dead main character that aren't purposely done so. Over here, Qi Yuan treats his cultivation as a game.

He gets transferred? Over to the "game world" and when his task/mission is complete, his cultivation gets transferred over to a varying degree type stuff. Each game world represents each tier in cultivation, but he starts off close to the bottom rum.

Harem haters, he is autistic, there... more>> is close to no romantic aspect (if you can even consider that romantic), he interacts with women in the game world and builds these connection. At the very least its not like one of those, "I got to help my women" type, he helps everybody yet treats them as NPC.

Honestly, this vibe this novel gives is refreshing, carefree, not always danger at every turn but enough to leave suspense and mysteries craving for more as well as innovative ideas for cultivation realm for MC such as having his golden core be a star.

It's the only one I'm tracking to for new updates every day. Which says a lot for me, as I like to binge read and start new one and come back when there is sufficient chapters in these novels. <<less
