Only a bit into volume 1 and it's fun so far. I like that we get both POVs, the situations are really funny, it's also well paced and structured.

It's a light hearted romcom with 2 stubborn characters, who went out in middle school once and much later end up in a contract marriage. The author says they are 19 and 21, but they act like 16 teenagers who cannot control their hormones. (they can only hold hands for 10 seconds before getting embarrassed.

Main reason why only 4 stars:

The MC is... more>> kind of an impossible trope of your usual Japanese MC.

And the FMC is a massive trope of Tsundere Rich Girl.

From the characteristics of him so far, he should have a good group of friends (only 1 side character showed up so far, from FMC's side), at least some experience in dating and confident in himself...

Yet he isn't any of those so far, because it's written for Japan. So the MC has to be a friendless (implied), inexperienced virg*n, who the FMC can easily tease. <<less

It's a romcom about two childhood friends, who also are each other's ex, that got engaged through a "fake marriage". They still love each other and didn't move on, but are too proud and immature to be honest and open about it.

Unfortunatelly, this novel got axed after 2 volumes and when I read I can see why.

We see the daily cohabitating live of the main characters and a bunch of fluffly and ecchi moments, however the real relationship development is lacking. How? We only know that they love each other... more>> because they are childhood friends who grew up together and were each other's first crush and boyfriend/girlfriend.

The author didn't tell any story of the time they dated when they were teenagers, except the moment and reason why they broke up.

Also, it's really annoying how every chapter these two mention that they are in a fake marriage, they say that at least 5 times per chapter.

Another problem is we know from the first prologue that they still have feelings for each other, but they never put any effort to make the other fall in love with him/her again. If they do something as a couple, it's because a side character has pointed it out. Example:
Spoiler

They only slept together and hug each other because MC's sister-in-law figure it out they lack intimacy. They only got out and took photos as a couple because MC's coworker anted to see their photos and they only had the ones form the wedding cerimony.

[collapse]

To compare this novel with "my stepsister is my ex" (another story of ex's lovers who starts cohabitating, still didn't move on from each other, but are too proud to be honest), in the latter we see flashbacks by the time they met, started to date, they similar hobbies and the things they did as a couple, everything in the first volume. This is why that novel it's ongoing with 8 volumes and this one got axed.

Spoiler

Why ML and FL of this novel broke up? FL's forced herself on ML to have s*x, he wanted to do it but got his climax pretty early, so he pushes her to stop. Their lack of communication led to her thinking she s*xually ab*sed him and he tough she hated him for ejaticul*ting earlier. It's weird how this novel tells the moment they tried to have s*x and failed, but never shows or tells a moment when they kissed for the first time.

[collapse]

There's an interesting correlation between ML, FL and the side characters, because these side characters have a real, but failed, marriages for different reasons. These side characters didn't move on with their lives and cope with their failed relationships in different ways. Like:

Spoiler

FL's maid asked for a resignation to get married, but soon got divorced. We don't know the reason, but apparently he cheated on her. She goes back to FL's house and starts to work as a maid again, but she's still bitter and annoyed that FL got engaged, even tough she knows it's fake. Even she acts like that, she always helps FL.

Akino-san (Sister-in-law). Her husband (MC's older brother) abandons her to live in America, they's are still formally married. She tries to get over him by trying to seduce MC and have an extramarital realtionship with him.

MC's senior coworker. Seems like a good guy and the only male friend that MC has, but he got divorced because he cheated on his ex-wife. He copes by hanging out to drink and going to brothels.

[collapse]

Even tough this novel got axed, I would guess that
Spoiler

FL's maid was the wife of ML's coworker and they still like each other. They eventually would got back together if this series didn't got axed.

[collapse]

The two novels starts with a prologue and the last chapter of the volume is related to that prologue.

My favorite and best character of the novel is
Spoiler

Akino (sister-in-law). Her character was tr*sh in the first volume (she just s3xually abus3d ML by toughing him in a inapropriate way and the novel tells that part as a joke). However, in the second volume she really got proper devolopment by the little time she has.

Her father also has abandoned her mother and latter got stabbed to the death by a woman, she laughed at that. Also, her kimono and appearance resembles a Black Widdow, she's the type of person who don't have high value for men due to past traumas and works to gain power in MC's family company to gain her independency. She's the main antagonist of the story.

The funniest moment of the novel is when FL tries to show that she's a good kisser by making a knot with a cherry stem, but Akino does a double knot and give tips on how to do a good kiss, but FL's realize that Akino was teaching her how to do a bl*wjob.

[collapse]

The least favorite one is
Spoiler

Kano, ML's kouhai from work who has feelings for him. She's in the story just to push FL to be more honest and make the main couple be together. It's an unecessary love triangle introduced in a story we even didn't see a proper development of the main couple. She's unecessary for the story.

I really like the main thread of this book but akino (pretty sure thats her name) is the one charater that comes close to ruining this story for me... Since arc 2 was annoying at times but overall had a a very satisfying conclusion (Not including epiloge) I only got rid of 1 star but my god the entire akino thing annoys me to where if the rest of the book wasn't so good then I would of dropped it... I'm going to put my rant about her actions into... more>> a spoiler since it will have some details but nothing that will really ruin the story

Spoiler

So I'm going to first start off with how she keeps trying to get with the male lead, I love this genre about a forced marriage where they actually like each other since it skips a lot of the bs normal romance has but I hate how every single one of these books has some female character going after the male lead. By this I'm not refering to someone like kano in this book who just loves him, its people like akino who are activily sexually harassing them. The male lead has clearly rejected her and yet she continues to do it, and this might be a cultural difference but it pisses me off how they continue to be corduial with her after this. Not to mention the entire stalker part casually added, and for god sake I know its for plot but please can a single main character record these bit*h like people since they always play innocent on the outside.

Anyways, that rant kinda built up after reading a few of these stories back to back, ironically this is probably the one that had it the least but whatever. It depends honestly on how volume 3 is written but I really hope the akino hot spring arc does not go the way I expect it to (I'm assuming she will try to force herself on male lead or some bs like that) but I don't honestly have high hopes since JP authors seem to be very stuck with sterotypes and even with an original concept they never seem to follow through with it. I just don't understand why every single book in this genre always has one character who will do s*xual harassment and for some reason the male lead just acts like this, in this book it wasn't that bad but still... I don't even know why it pisses me off so much since I can read a lot more horrific things in the fantasy genre without getting so pissed off but it just really aggervates me how the MC will reject the person but despite that person not respecting their boundrys they continue... Anyways, sorry about the rant that honestly wasn't even that related to this book... it just makes me feel better to write about it and since I don't have anyone to discus this book with it ended up here...

Great premise, but would've been better without unnecessary drama
Since the premise is keeping something a secret, obviously the main problem is when others found out about it. The problem is, the author uses nudges of dense harem protagonist, it kind of takes away from the struggles of the premise.

I think the major problem with this is that, despite emphasizing the fact that they're in college, their college life was never brought up at all other than "today he goes to college". While the novel touches on the issues of marriage, in reality it's more like an issue of cohabitation. Tonikaku Kawaii touches more on the struggles of marriage despite the fact that it involves high schoolers, which says something.

Still, the comedy parts are entertaining
